MYFOXNY.COM - The Drudge Report has reported on exclusive details of the book former president George W. Bush is set to release next month. One of the details released in the report is that President Bush gave the order to shoot down planes on September 11 -- and at first thought the plane that went into a rural field in Shanksville, Penn. had been shot down. The 9/11 chapter is titled "Day of Fire." Decision Points is set for a November 9 release but the Drudge Report apparently was leaked a copy. It reports that the book starts with a chapter on President Bush's decision to quit drinking. The book is described as a "strikingly personal work" and it apparently ...

65% of Likely U.S. Voters say if they had the option next week, they would vote to get rid of the entire Congress and start all over again. Not surprisingly, 82% of Republicans and 78% of unaffiliateds say dump them all. 38% of Democrats would prefer to give all the national legislators the heave-ho. Just 12% of all voters nationwide now think Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Sixty-one percent (61%) rate their performance as poor. Most voters think their representative in Congress does not deserve reelection if he or she voted for the national health care law, the auto bailouts or the $787-billion economic stimulus plan. 62% believe that no matter how bad things are, Congress ...
Employers in U.S. Start Bracing for Higher Tax Withholding Post Date: 2010-10-28 11:31:56 by Brian S

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Employers in the U.S. are starting to warn their workers to prepare for slimmer paychecks if Congress fails to vote on an extension of Bush-era tax cuts. Ive been doing payroll for probably close to 30 years now, and never have we seen something like this where it gets that down to the wire, said Dennis Danilewicz, who manages payroll services for about 14,000 employees at New York Universitys Langone Medical Center. Thats whats got a lot of people nervous. All we can do is start preparing communications with a couple of different scenarios. Lawmakers wont start debating whether to extend the cuts, which expire ...

United Arab Emirates-- A Saudi prince who has aided the imam spearheading a proposed Islamic center near New York's ground zero is appealing for another site not associated with the "wound" of the Sept. 11 attacks, a report said Thursday. In interview excerpts published by the Dubai-based Arabian Business magazine, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was quoted as saying that moving the planned mosque and other facilities would respect the memory of those killed in the 2001 attacks and allow American Muslims to choose a more suitable location. The comments are reportedly the prince's first public views on the dispute, which has stirred street protests and fiery debates between ...
Unemployment claims drop sharply to 434K Post Date: 2010-10-28 09:11:16 by go65

WASHINGTON Fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the second drop in a row and a hopeful sign the job market could be improving. The Labor Department says initial claims for jobless benefits dropped by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 434,000 in the week that ended Oct. 23. It was the second-lowest number for claims this year. The only time it was lower was during the July 10 week, and that week was affected by the Independence Day holiday when state unemployment offices were closed. Stock futures rose after the report was released. Wall Street analysts had expected a tiny increase. Claims will need to keep falling to signal a widespread increase in hiring. ...

Tornadoes, violent thunderstorms, and torrential rains swept through a large portion of the nation's midsection yesterday, thanks to the strongest storm ever recorded in the Midwest. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center logged 24 tornado reports and 282 reports of damaging high winds from yesterday's spectacular storm, and the storm continues to produce a wide variety of wild weather, with tornado watches posted for Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, a blizzard warning for North Dakota, high wind warnings for most of the upper Midwest, and near-hurricane force winds on Lake Superior. The mega-storm reached peak intensity late yesterday afternoon over Minnesota, resulting in the ...
Indiana Parents Told Drop Disabled Kids At Shelters Post Date: 2010-10-27 19:54:44 by Brian S

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana's budget crunch has become so severe that some state workers have suggested leaving severely disabled people at homeless shelters if they can't be cared for at home, parents and advocates said. They said workers at Indiana's Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services have told parents that's one option they have when families can no longer care for children at home and haven't received Medicaid waivers that pay for services that support disabled people living independently. Marcus Barlow, a spokesman for the Family and Social Services Administration, the umbrella agency that includes the bureau, said suggesting homeless shelters is not ...
Abortion Docs Say 'Wanted' Posters Are Bait For Their Murder Post Date: 2010-10-27 19:07:17 by Brian S

"Wanted" posters are giving abortion doctors in North Carolina something to be concerned about. CBS News reports that Operation Save America is responsible for putting up Wanted posters with the faces of abortion doctors. One flyer even cites a home address. "It doesn't say 'Wanted Dead or Alive' but the implications are clearly there," said one doctor who wished to remain anonymous. "These 'Wanted' posters are a call for my murder," the doctor told CBS News. "The posters are meant to call for my murder by that borderline person," said the doctor. "They are putting out the bait, they are putting out the message, the call, ...
Kentucky Police Consider Charging More Paul Supporters In Stomping Case Post Date: 2010-10-27 18:59:35 by Brian S

You thought the Kentucky Stomping Story had been swallowed by the news cycle? Think again. The identification of the Kentucky Stomper -- former Rand Paul volunteer Tim Profitt -- allowed Lexington police to issue a criminal summons in the case. He'll soon appear in district court and possibly face charges. But Lexington police say the investigation is still ongoing, and they may pursue the other Paul-supporters who participated in the assault. "At this point, the investigation is still ongoing," public information officer Sherelle Roberts told ABC News. "We're looking into other individuals who may have been involved in the assault and could get charged." A ...
Watchdog Warns SEIU Contract for Nevada Voting Machines Poses 'Fraud' Concern Post Date: 2010-10-27 18:00:38 by WhiteSands

A conservative watchdog group is calling on Nevada officials to intervene to ensure SEIU workers who operate one county's voting machines don't skew the results to boost their endorsed candidate, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. A contract between SEIU Local 1107 and Clark County -- where voting glitches were reported Tuesday -- makes the SEIU the sole union representative for, among other professions, voting machine technicians. Nevada SEIU spokesman Nick Di Archangel called the suggestion that SEIU or its technicians would manipulate voting machines "absolutely false." But Americans for Limited Government called the union agreement "positively outrageous" ...
Obama the Uniter: Republicans “Gotta Sit in Back” Post Date: 2010-10-27 17:50:56 by WhiteSands

Worst. President. Ever. Barack Obama added a new line to his speech yesterday. Now he says, Republicans gotta sit in back. Classy. The AP reported: In a little more than five hours in the state, Obama was booked for a factory tour and for a pair of fundraisers that party officials said would bring in $500,000. He said Republicans had driven the economy into a ditch and then stood by and criticized while Democrats pulled it out. Now that progress has been made, he said, we cant have special interests sitting shotgun. We gotta have middle class families up in front. We dont mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in ...

Michelle, W.H. misspellBy: Patrick Gavin October 26, 2010 10:35 PM EST Updated: October 27, 2010 12:01 PM EST When it comes to typos and spelling, everyone makes mistakes... even the White House. In a White House press release sent Tuesday evening, there's a misspelling, and it's a big one: The first lady's first name. "Michele and I are deeply saddened by the loss of life, injuries, and damage that have occurred as a result of the recent earthquake and tsunami in West Sumatra," reads the release. Of course, the first lady's first name is spelled "Michelle," with two "l"'s. UPDATE: On Wednesday morning, the White ...

Democrat Gets Booed for Blaming Bush-- In Massachusetts! Post Date: 2010-10-27 16:12:57 by no gnu taxes

Perhaps this video goes along with the recent polls to show how much the electorate has truly shifted. Apparently Democrat Jim McGovern of Massachusetts thought that he could simply parrot a well-worn Democratic talking point and blame George W. Bush for the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and just about everything else. Not only this, but he must be willfully forgetting the role of another Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank and Connecticut's Chris Dodd in the fiscal crisis, as well. But McGovern appears to believe that going to this line will help him out. Except, in Massacusetts, it doesn't. How bizarre can you get during this debate that the anti-Bush speech is ...
A Permanent Democratic Majority? (Oh, how the mighty have fallen) Post Date: 2010-10-27 15:47:54 by no gnu taxes

A growing number of political scientists, analysts and strategists are making the case for a realignment of political power in the U.S. to a new Democratic majority based on two trends: 1) the increasing numbers of black and Hispanic voters, and 2) a decisive shift away from the Republican Party by the suburban and well-educated constituencies that once formed the backbone of the GOP. Arguments supporting a Democratic realignment are based on well-researched population and voting data. Nonetheless, at a time when the economy remains in crisis and when international tensions are intensifying across the globe, any claim that Democratic (or Republican) ascendance is inevitable should be ...
NJ Gov: I'm Sticking With Decision To Scrap Tunnel Post Date: 2010-10-27 15:46:52 by Brian S

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Gov. Chris Christie cited New Jersey's lack of money Wednesday in standing by his decision to kill a train tunnel connecting his state to New York City, a move that will force the state to repay up to $350 million of the money it was given to start the nation's biggest public works project. Christie, a rising star in the Republican Party for his fearless budget-slashing, has argued that his cash-strapped state can't afford to pay for any overruns on the $9 billion-plus rail tunnel under the Hudson River. The state is on the hook for $2.7 billion plus overruns. "In the end, my decision does not change," Christie said. "I cannot place upon ...
Court Dismisses Alan Keyes’ ‘Birther’ Lawsuit Post Date: 2010-10-27 15:43:42 by Brian S

A lawsuit claiming President Barack Obama is not eligible to occupy the White House because he is not a natural born citizen was thrown out by a state appellate court on Monday. The leading plaintiff of the lawsuit, which was filed shortly after the 2008 election, was Alan Keyes. Keyes, who lost to Obama in the 2004 Senate race in Illinois and was the American Independent Party candidate for president in 2008, claims there is "persuasive evidence" that Obama was born in Kenya in 1961. At the time, Kenya was a British protectorate, making Obama a British citizen automatically, based on his father's citizenship. The other plaintiffs in the case were Wiley S. Drake Sr., a ...

Midterm Snapshot: Enthusiasm for Obama Reelection Bid Greater Than for Reagan in 1982 Post Date: 2010-10-27 15:09:30 by go65

Two years ahead of the next presidential election, the public is divided over whether Barack Obama should run for a second term as president. About half (47%) say they would like to see Obama run again in 2012, while 42% say they would not. This is better than the outlook for Ronald Reagan in August 1982; at that point, just 36% of the public said they wanted to see Reagan who subsequently went on to win his second term by an 18-point margin run for reelection. The latest Pew Research/National Journal Congressional Connection poll, sponsored by SHRM, conducted October 21-24 among 1,006 adults, finds that the 47% who currently say they would like Obama to run again is ...
GOP Wants Insiders to Staff Outsiders Post Date: 2010-10-27 14:19:03 by go65

In anticipation of major GOP gains in next weeks elections, House Republican leaders have put together a list of experienced Washington hands to help fill top staff positions for the surge of newly elected outsiders. Leading the effort are Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) and the National Republican Congressional Committee. The leaders have put together a list of about 75 to 80 potential chiefs of staff, including current and former Capitol Hill staffers and lobbyists who have been recommended or have inquired about working for an incoming Member, according to several Republicans familiar with the document. There will be a lot of new, ...
Record Low Pressure Hits Minnesota October 26-27, 2010 Post Date: 2010-10-27 14:15:15 by go65

On October 26, a large storm system dominated the continental United States. This is one of the strongest non-tropical storms on record for lowest minimum pressure in the United States. The lowest pressure found so far with the October 26 storm was 28.20 inches at 5:13pm at Bigfork in Itasca County. This shatters the old Minnesota lowest pressure record of 28.43 that was set in the November 10, 1998 storm at both Austin and Albert Lea. The strongest Great Lakes area storm in terms of pressure was the "Great Ohio Blizzard" of Janaury 26, 1978. The pressure minimum of this storm was 28.05, which was likely measured in southern Ontario. Thus, it appears that the minumum pressure of ...
Justice Elena Kagan's first vote is against an execution Post Date: 2010-10-27 13:47:24 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON Justice Elena Kagan cast her first vote on the Supreme Court late Tuesday, joining the liberals in dissent when the high court cleared the way for the execution of an Arizona murderer. The 5-4 ruling overturned orders by a federal judge in Phoenix and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that had stopped the execution by lethal injection of Jeffrey Landrigan. His lawyers, in a last-ditch appeal, had raised questions about one of the drugs used in the execution. Since the only U.S. manufacturer of sodium thiopental had suspended production, Arizona officials said they had obtained a supply of the drug from a British company. The judge in Phoenix put the ...
2012 Watch: Giuliani for president – again? Post Date: 2010-10-27 12:42:34 by go65

(CNN) His unorthodox presidential campaign strategy fell flat in 2008, but former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani says he hasnt ruled out a second try in 2012. "The door's not closed, Giuliani told Politico on Monday night when asked point-blank if he still has his eyes set on the White House. Hailed as Americas Mayor in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Giulianis campaign became a study in how not to run for president: Deciding to forgo seriously competing in the early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina - and instead focusing largely on Floridas primary a month later - Giuliani was ultimately viewed as ...

If Republicans take the House, how much likelier is a full extension of the Bush tax cuts? I'd say the odds that the cuts for income over $250,000 remain in place for at least a few more years go up by at least 50 percent, and if those cuts are extended once, I think it's also likelier that they get extended again. If Republicans take the House and the Senate, how much likelier is a full extension of the Bush tax cuts? I'd say it goes up to 70 percent, and the only reason I don't say 100 percent is that President Obama has more incentive to pick a fight with Congress. Nevertheless, the compromise will almost surely include a temporary extension of the tax cuts for income ...
Polls Show Wider Boxer Lead, Narrowing G.O.P. Takeover Path Post Date: 2010-10-27 09:43:41 by go65

We have been noting for several weeks that, with Republican chances having dwindled from slim to virtually none in a few East Coast Senate contests like Connecticut, Delaware, and the New York special election, their prospects of the party winning a 51st Senate seat on Nov. 2 instead boiled down to winning either California or Washington (while sweeping the other competitive contests). Today, they have gotten bad news in one of those races. That is the race in California, where several polls released within the past 24 hours show leads of 4 to 9 points for the Democrat, Barbara Boxer. Trendlines in these polls show little indication that Ms. Boxers lead has eroded; instead, it ...
