Civil rights panel postpones vote on New Black Panthers report after member walks out Post Date: 2010-10-29 15:59:43 by WhiteSands

A federal commission had to postpone a vote on a report that criticizes the Justice Department's handling of a voter-intimidation lawsuit Friday after a Democratic panelist walked out of the meeting in protest. The draft of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights report says that Justice tried to hide the extensive involvement of high-level political officials in the dismissal of the suit against members of the New Black Panther Party. The move, the report says, indicates that Justice's Civil Rights Division is failing to protect white voters and is "at war with its core mission of guaranteeing equal protection (under) the laws for all Americans.'' The Justice Department ...
Report: 25 states considering Arizona-style immigration laws Post Date: 2010-10-29 15:55:19 by WhiteSands

An immigrant-rights group has released a report (PDF) predicting that 25 states may try next year to pass anti-illegal-immigration laws similar to Arizona's controversial legislation. The number of states considering legislation modeled after SB1070, the bill that Arizona GOP Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law this spring, is apparently growing: Earlier, pro-enforcement groups said 22 states were considering the bill, the Washington Independent's Elise Foley notes. The new efforts are going forward even after a federal judge ruled key parts of the Arizona law unconstitutional and enjoined its enforcement in Arizona in July. That decision is now under appeal before the Ninth U.S. ...
Why John BoehnerÂ’s Life Is About To Become a Living Hell Post Date: 2010-10-29 15:17:04 by go65

Three surveys released in the past week—Pew, Bloomberg, and CBS/New York Times —illuminate what the American people want from the new Congress that convenes next January. Taken together, these polls offer a warning to a new Republican majority: If you push your limited government agenda too far or refuse to cooperate with Democrats and the White House, you’ll pay a price. Here’s a question from the Bloomberg poll: If Republicans win control of Congress, what do you want to happen—do you want the parties to stick to their principles even if it means gridlock and nothing gets done, or do you want the parties to work together even if it means compromising some ...
Democratic Closing Argument: Personal Attacks, Democrats Attack Over Personal Issues, Republicans Over Policy Post Date: 2010-10-29 15:03:04 by WhiteSands

It's not just the Aqua Buddha and David Vitter's prostitute, Democratic candidates across the country are closing out the campaign with personal attacks on Republican candidates, sometimes digging up decades-old legal problems. In one typical example, Democratic ads have transformed Kentucky Republican House candidate Andy Barr into "a convicted criminal" -- complete with images yellow police tape and fuzzy video of crime scenes. Not mentioned is his crime: As a college student 19 years ago, he was caught using a fake ID during spring break. As you watch this year's ads -- and I've been watching all too many lately -- you'll notice a striking difference ...
JoinTheTeaParty.us Tied To Data Mining Firm; Took Nearly $500,000 In Donations And Gave None To Campaigns: Report Post Date: 2010-10-29 13:35:54 by Brian S

A website run out of Arizona, ostensibly to support the so-called tea party movement, is under scrutiny after a local news organization dug into their finances and ownership, only to find what some may characterize as a remarkable scam. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosure forms, JoinTheTeaParty.us took in approximately $469,000 in donations this year and spent roughly half its budget on marketing, with the rest going to distinctly non-political avenues. In fact, according to CBS 5 in Phoenix, there's no evidence the group spent so much as a dime to promote tea party candidates or related events. FEC forms pulled by CBS affiliate show the group spent nearly $200,000 ...
Poll Shows Americans Don't Know GDP Grew With Tax Cuts and Bailout Profits Post Date: 2010-10-29 12:08:50 by Brian S

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration cut taxes for middle-class Americans, expects to make a profit on the hundreds of billions of dollars spent to rescue Wall Street banks and has overseen an economy that has grown for the past five quarters. Most voters dont believe it. A Bloomberg National Poll conducted Oct. 24-26 finds that by a two-to-one margin, likely voters in the Nov. 2 midterm elections think taxes have gone up, the economy has shrunk, and the billions lent to banks as part of the Troubled Asset Relief Program wont be recovered. The public view of the economy is at odds with the facts, and the blame has to go to the Democrats, said J. Ann ...

United Parcel Service Inc. said the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is inspecting possible suspicious packages on three jets that flew in from Europe. A Boeing Co. 767 from Paris and an MD-11 from Cologne, Germany, both landed safely in Philadelphia, and items on board are being investigated, Mike Mangeot, a spokesman for Atlanta- based UPS, said today in a telephone interview. The third plane is a 767 that arrived at New Jerseys Newark airport from East Midlands, U.K., Mangeot said. The FBI and the Transportation Security Administration havent given UPS further details about the nature of the packages or what is under investigation, Mangeot said. He said he wasnt ...

Obama Must Have Ignored His GPS…He Drove the Economy Off a Cliff Post Date: 2010-10-29 10:46:51 by no gnu taxes

On Monday while championing his disastrous economic puzzle, President Obama chided Republicans for driving the economy into the ditch and then standing by while Democrats pulled it out but now that progress has been made he said, we cant have special interests sitting shotgun. We gotta have middle class up front. We dont mind the Republicans joining us, they can come for the ride but they gotta sit in the back. It was better being in the ditch, Obama must have ignored his GPS, at least the Republicans didnt drive the economy off the cliff. When Democrat-Socialist took control of the Congress in 2008 unemployment was 4.6% during George Bushs Watch and ...
Is the Religious Right Taking Over the Tea Party? Post Date: 2010-10-29 10:40:04 by go65

MyType, a psychographic opinion research firm of which I am CEO, surveyed over 17,000 Americans about the Tea Party to reveal the demographics, values, morals and personalities of the movement's supporters. The survey data suggest that the movement is in the middle of an identity crisis. Devoutly religious conservatives comprise 22.5% of the Tea Party and are its fastest growing segment. They bring with them a fundamentally different set of values, morals and personalities than libertarian supporters, a core group that represent 17% of the party. While the former tend to be morally charged, family- oriented traditionalists, many libertarian supporters are neither religious nor ...
If Democrats hoped for a splashy third-quarter GDP number to shake them from their midterm doldrums, the Commerce Department has disappointed them today Post Date: 2010-10-29 10:36:26 by no gnu taxes

If Democrats hoped for a splashy third-quarter GDP number to shake them from their midterm doldrums, the Commerce Department has disappointed them today. Their initial estimate of the US economy in the third quarter of 2010, the fifth quarter for the current recovery, straggled in at an anemic 2.0%, barely above the final 1.7% from the preceding quarter. And if this gets revised downward in four weeks, the brunt of it will fall not on departing Democrats in Congress but Barack Obama: U.S. economic growth edged up as expected in the third quarter but not enough to chip away at high unemployment or change perceptions of more monetary easing from the Federal Reserve next week. Gross domestic ...
GM Gears Up Factories, Balance Sheet for Future Starting Now Post Date: 2010-10-29 10:34:04 by go65

General Motors Co., preparing for an initial public offering, is showing a different spirit than the failed behemoth that preceded it: investing in small cars, planning to hire workers and paying obligations early. GM yesterday said its investing in a Michigan factory to make a small Cadillac and hire 600 workers. Hours later, it said it paid $2.8 billion to its union retiree health-care trust and obtained $5 billion in credit that it may not need. After the IPO, the Detroit-based automaker said it will buy back preferred shares from the U.S. and put $6 billion in its pension plans. The rapid-fire moves show how GM will operate under new Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson after the ...
U.S. Economy Gained in Third Quarter on Consumer Spending Post Date: 2010-10-29 09:29:46 by go65

The U.S. economy grew at a 2 percent annual rate in the third quarter as consumer spending climbed the most in almost four years, a sign the expansion is developing staying power. The increase in gross domestic product matched the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and followed a 1.7 percent gain the prior three months, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Household purchases, about 70 percent of the economy, rose at a 2.6 percent pace, the best quarter of the recovery that began in June 2009. The figures, the last economy-wide gauge before voters head to the polls on Nov. 2, show growth remains short of whats needed to cut a jobless rate ...

Wow: Charlie Cook moves Barney Frank’s seat from “likely Democratic” to “lean Democratic” Post Date: 2010-10-28 18:21:52 by WhiteSands

Remember, as of just a few weeks ago, this seat wasnt even on the board. Then, for the first time in decades, MA-4 popped up in the likely Democratic column. And now, if youll pardon the pun, its moved a bit further to the right. I was thinking yesterday after I wrote that post about Bielats internal polling that maybe it wasnt what it was cracked up to be: The topline number was conspicuously omitted (why would a pollster ever do that?) and the data was 10 days old (are the more recent numbers so grim that they had to leak stale ones?). In hindsight, I thought, they were probably trying to put the best face on an increasingly bad situation. But ...

Via Mediaite. One of these days were going to stop doing Behar/Angle bitch posts. But that day is not today, my friends. I wonder what Joys motivation was here. Did Barbara decide to have a word with her after watching the train derail two days in a row? Did the heat from womens groups about her favorite term of endearment finally convince her to back down? Or did she wise up and realize that, at the rate shes going, shes going to help Angle bank another half million in donations before the weekends out? Not that it much matters at this point: According to Nate Silvers statistical model, the Senate seat every conservative wants to win ...

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Texas A&M University locked down its main campus Thursday after a report that a suspected gunman had been spotted near the student union. University spokesman Lane Stephenson said campus police were investigating but have not found any armed suspect so far. A campus bus driver was on his route around 4 p.m. when he reported seeing an individual carrying a weapon, possibly a rifle, near a building next to the student union. The university's emergency notification system, called Code Maroon, sent texts and e-mail telling students, faculty and staff to remain indoors while police searched for the suspected gunman. About two miles away from ...

Beleaguered Bay State and U.S. taxpayers coughed up a staggering $35.7 million this year in free emergency health care for more than 52,000 illegal aliens in Massachusetts, sparking outrage from candidates and critics who back a tougher line on immigration. The figures released by Gov. Deval Patricks administration under an order for the Secretary of States office and after more than a month of ducking questions show illegal immigrants who belong to MassHealth Limited received $33.8 million in taxpayer-funded in-patient hospital care this year. They also made 6,160 visits to the states overburdened emergency rooms in the fiscal year ending in June for an ...
As Midterms Near, Israel Is Again A Battleground For U.S. Politicians Post Date: 2010-10-28 17:11:16 by Brian S

America's financial aid to Israel has once again become a political football in Washington as the United States prepares to vote in midterm congressional elections next month. Eric Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in the U.S. Congress and the minority whip in the lower House of Representatives, this week proposed reclassifying aid to Israel away from the national foreign aid budget to the defense budget. Behind the initiative, Cantor says, is a wider attempt to cancel U.S. aid to countries who do not share American interests, a cry echoing round Republican campaign meetings accompanied, of course, by strenuous denials of any attempt to buy votes. According to Cantor, funds ...

To me, thats a term of endearment. I reserve that word for people that I know and love. So that was a mistake and I take it back. Wait, Joy Behar and Sharron Angle secret BFFs? ...

Shock poll: Americans think Bush doing a better job than Obama (and more) Post Date: 2010-10-28 16:39:52 by WhiteSands

Some fascinating numbers from longtime Democratic pollster Doug Schoen (via U.S. News & World Report). Among them: Voters prefer Bush over Obama, want the GOP to control congress, favor extending all the Bush tax cuts, dont favor another term for Obama and would give Palin nearly 20 percent of the vote if she ran as a third-party presidential candidate. His survey of 1,000 likely voters finds the following (bold is mine): The 2010 midterms In the generic Congressional midterm election, the Republican Party has a nine-point lead over the Democratic Party, 48% to 39%. 13% are not sure. However, when given the choice between a Republican, a Democrat, and a Tea Party ...
Priorities: Illinois officials miss the deadline to mail military ballots; hand-deliver ballots to inmates Post Date: 2010-10-28 15:06:28 by WhiteSands

Right now, there are tens of thousands of service members fighting overseas to defend our rights and freedoms. One of Americas most cherished rights is the right to vote. There was a very loud outcry when New York officials somehow missed the deadline to send out military ballots. Well, first it was New York, and now its Illinois. And Illinois has miraculously managed to be even more outrageous than New York. While 35 counties failed to mail the military ballots in time, election officials made sure that inmates get the chance to vote by hand delivering ballots to prisons. So those are the priorities in Illinois, huh? The men and women who are putting their lives on the line ...

When I wrote yesterday that the blame Bush strategy had reached its expiration date, I had no idea how prescient that was. Pollster Douglas Schoen, who partners with longtime Democratic strategist Mark Penn at Penn Schoen & Berland, has taken his final look at the midterm electorate and finds it extraordinarily hostile to Barack Obama. The President only gets 38% for a re-election bid, but the news is worse than that much worse, according to US News & World Report: According to pollster Doug Schoen, whose new poll shows vast support for the Tea Party movement among voters, the president is still liked by about half the nation. In fact, more like him personally ...
