About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists would accompany the President. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments. "Except for personnel providing ...

Soon after, Marybel Batjer, Harrahs vice president of public policy and communications, distributed that plea via email to executives throughout the company. Download the full email chain as a PDF here. Michelle Obama's 'rock star' status fails to draw crowds Post Date: 2010-11-02 13:55:07 by WhiteSands

The crowd went wild when Michelle Obama swept into a high-school gymnasium in Las Vegas yesterday morning, with little Harry Reid trailing in her wake and a local Mariachi band, in full dress uniform, entertaining the crowd. But behind the flag waving and anthem-singing, and the sunny optimism of a typical American election rally, there was a palpable sense of unease. Two years ago, at the height of Obamania, the First Lady was a sort of rock-star; with a following wind, she could fill an outdoor stadium. Today, her stock has fallen. A few hundred people did turn out to hear her speech, but there were swathes of seats left empty at the back, and plenty of standing room around the stage. ...
Parties to battle over deficit cuts (Debt limit watch) Post Date: 2010-11-02 13:44:13 by go65

After an election season marked by shrink-the-debt rallying cries, a Republican majority in the House would quickly have a chance to show whether its serious about cutting federal spending so serious, it would threaten to shut down the government. House Republican leaders insist the party wouldnt take it that far. But tell that to a crop of tea party candidates who say theyre prepared to take that dramatic step, if needed, to stick by their campaign- trail pledges to rein in government spending. The showdown could come after the next Congress convenes, when Republicans and Democrats would take up a routine Treasury request to increase the amount the federal ...
Rep. Bachus: Obama might 'force' GOP to shut down government Post Date: 2010-11-02 12:41:01 by go65

A top House Republican said Monday President Obama might try to force a government shutdown to hurt Republicans. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), the top GOP member of the influential House Financial Services Committee, said Republicans should be prepared to be "brave" in the face of a shutdown. I would think when we send the spending bills to the president he will veto them, and then the hard vote will be when he sends them back and we will be faced with another situation where he will probably try to force us to shut government down and we are going to have to be brave this time," Bachus explained on the Fox Business Network. Republicans are optimistic they will ...

U.S. Homeownership at Lowest Level in a Decade Post Date: 2010-11-02 11:22:03 by WhiteSands

The nation's homeownership rate is at the lowest level in more than a decade, hampered by a rise in foreclosures and weak demand for housing. The Census Bureau says the percentage of households that owned their homes was unchanged at 66.9 percent in the July-September quarter. That's the same as the April-June quarter. The last time the rate was lower was in 1999, when the rate was 66.7 percent. The nation's homeownership rate was around 64 percent from 1985 through 1995. It then rose dramatically during the Clinton and Bush administrations, hitting a peak of more than 69 percent in 2004 at the height of the housing boom. After the housing bubble burst, the rate has been ...
Democratic Party Faces Most Sweeping House Midterm Defeat in Seven Decades Post Date: 2010-11-02 11:19:01 by Brian S

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The Republicans are poised to retake the U.S. House and narrow Democrats margin in the Senate, delivering a rebuke to President Barack Obamas party in a campaign shaped by voter anxiety over jobs and the economy. Republicans, who need a net gain of 39 seats to take control of the House, may pick up at least 50 in todays elections, capitalizing on concerns about government spending and a 9.6 percent unemployment rate. The party may win as many as eight seats in the Senate, just shy of the 10 needed for a majority. Its going to be one of those elections that 10 to 15 years from now people look back and point to as a midterm ...
New Record Highs Continue Outpacing Lows By Wide Margin: Nearly 5:1 in October Post Date: 2010-11-02 10:00:08 by go65

Continuing the pattern established in the spring, extending through the summer and into September, new record high temperatures are outpacing record low temperatures in the U.S. for the 10th consecutive month. Preliminary data from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) for October show over 1500 new record highs, vs. slightly more than 300 lows, giving a ratio of 4.75 to 1. For the year to date, new highs are exceeding new lows by a ratio of 2.8 to 1. Reversing the trend in September, new record warm minimum temperatures also exceeded record high maximums as they have in nearly every month so far in 2010. The excess of high minimum records was particularly strong in the summer, when ...

DENVER -- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has offered a last-minute endorsement to former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo in the Colorado governor's race. Palin urged voters Monday to support Tancredo - who is running on the American Constitution Party ticket - saying he will fight for lower taxes and smaller government, and start growing the economy. Colorado GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes, a tea party favorite, says Palin is increasingly becoming part of the establishment. He says Palin waited until the day before the election to improve her odds of picking a winner. Tancredo and Maes are running against Democrat John Hickenlooper, Denver's mayor, in Tuesday's election.
Boehner To Obama: Opponents Are "Patriots" Not "Enemies" Post Date: 2010-11-01 23:01:00 by WhiteSands

"Well, Mr. President, I have a word to describe those people. Those people who have the audacity to speak up against the big government, the people who have the audacity to go out and support our Constitution, the people who are out there every day fighting for a limited government that has served our country so well for 200 years. And Mr. President that word isn't enemies, they're patriots," Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) said in response to President Obama calling opponents "enemies."
Thin Crowd for Cleveland Campaign Rally Post Date: 2010-11-01 16:09:12 by WhiteSands

CLEVELAND President Obama wrapped up a weekend of last-minute campaigning in Ohio on Sunday, addressing Democrats in an indoor arena that, in a sign of the enthusiasm gap that the president is working so hard to close, was little more than half full. About 8,000 people attended the Democratic National Committees Moving America Forward rally at Cleveland State Universitys Wolstein Center, a hall where the capacity is 13,000. The rafters were largely empty. Organizers noted the president was competing on a Sunday afternoon with church, football and Halloween. And Mr. Obama drew a huge crowd of about 35,000 when he was in nearby Columbus, Ohio, in an ...
House loss could propel Pelosi into retirement Post Date: 2010-11-01 14:53:18 by WhiteSands

WASHINGTON The speaker's lobby and its hallways just off the House chamber are hung with portraits of all 51 former speakers: each male, each long gone, some famous, most forgotten: Henry Clay and Joseph Cannon, Tom Foley and Jim Wright, Newt Gingrich and Dennis Hastert. Hanging over Tuesday's election is a big question: Will the first woman, San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi, join that gallery? Pelosi's allies, perhaps offering a clue to her thinking, cite the example of legendary Texas Democrat Sam Rayburn, who twice lost the majority but came back as speaker a record three times from 1940 until his death in 1961. If this is the path Pelosi, 70, wants to follow ...

Steele vows no compromise on debt ceiling Post Date: 2010-11-01 14:43:10 by go65

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Sunday that Republicans intend to fight against a vote due next year on raising the limit on government borrowing. "We are not going to compromise on raising more debt. We are not going to compromise on raising the debt ceiling," Steele said on CNN's "State of the Union." While in the congressional minority, Republicans have made political hay out of periodic votes in Congress to raise the national debt, which are needed whenever the the government runs budget deficits. The dynamic will be different, however, if the GOP controls the House. In that case, it will be votes and bills favored by a Republican ...
Labor Unions Fear Rollback of Rights if G.O.P. Wins Post Date: 2010-11-01 14:10:51 by WhiteSands

Organized labor is deeply worried about what happens after Tuesday. By many measures, labor unions have been the Republicans fiercest, biggest-spending opponents in this years campaign, laying out more than $200 million in hopes of safeguarding the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. So it should be no surprise that Republicans, who appear to stand a good chance of winning control of the House or the Senate, are signaling that they plan to push bills and strategies to undermine labors political clout and its ability to grow. Republicans are likely to pursue a version of what Samuel Gompers often said: Reward your friends and punish your ...

Bush … Come Back, Bush, Come Back Post Date: 2010-11-01 13:51:06 by no gnu taxes

Why We Suddenly Miss Bush Various polls report that George W. Bush in some states is now better liked than President Obama. Even some liberal pundits call for Bush, the now long-missed moderate, to draw on his recognized tolerance and weigh in on the Ground Zero mosque or the Arizona anti-immigration legislation. Apparently the erstwhile divider is now the healer that the healer Obama is not. As President Obamas polls dip, as Congress is widely disdained, and as the economy slumps, suddenly George Bush is missed. Why so? Let me list ten likely reasons. 1) The Obama record. We naturally compare Bush to his chief critic and successor Barack Obama and find the latter ...
Unemployment Offices To Add Armed Guards; 99 Weeks of Benefits Set To End... Post Date: 2010-11-01 13:45:49 by Brian S

INDIANAPOLIS -- Armed security guards will be on hand at 36 unemployment offices around Indiana in what state officials said is a step to improve safety and make branch security more consistent. No specific incidents prompted the action, Department of Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter told 6News' Norman Cox. Lotter said the agency is merely being cautious with the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods. "Given the upcoming expiration of the federal extensions and the increased stress on some of the ...
Alaska Senate Write-In Vote Could Delay Results for Weeks Post Date: 2010-11-01 13:23:08 by Brian S

There could be plenty of nail-biters as election results are tallied Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but one race in particular might leave everyone hanging -- for weeks. Sen. Lisa Murkowski's write-in campaign against Joe Miller -- who defeated her in Alaska's GOP Senate primary -- and Democrat Scott McAdams is what threatens to gum up the works. The New York Times reports that the election could be decided quickly if either Miller or McAdams is clearly ahead after ballots are counted on election night. In either of those cases, a protracted inspection of the write-in votes would be unnecessary. Lisa Murkowski, Joe Miller But that's a big if, and the mechanics of ...

An interview with a Democratic Washington insider described as a longtime Washington D.C. insider, and former advisor to the Obama election campaign and transition team
describes the administration in crisis, and a president increasingly withdrawn from the job of President. Whomever the Democrat insider might be, his comments are consistent with what many of us sense. He does not believe another four years would be in the best interests of America, or perhaps more accurately, the Democratic Party. When confronted, here is the question and his answer: Q: But would another four years of an Obama presidency be the best thing for America? A: (Long pause) Now ...
GOP majority would increase pressure on Iran policy Post Date: 2010-11-01 11:27:34 by go65

Republicans see a majority in the next Congress as an opportunity to put heat on the administration to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. They'll be joined by Democrats who have been vocal this Congress about the threat, expressing fears of a nuclear Iran and reminding the White House that the clock is ticking on reining in the countrys nuclear ambitions. Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Tom Price (Ga.) told The Hill that, with an expected GOP majority in the House next Congress, it will be time to pull together as a conference and get like- minded Democrats on board an effort to push even tougher sanctions against Iran. The question that the American ...
Construction Spending in U.S. Unexpectedly Rose in September Post Date: 2010-11-01 10:53:32 by go65

Construction spending in the U.S. unexpectedly rose in September, led by increases in homebuilding and public projects. The 0.5 percent gain brought spending to $801.7 billion after a revised 0.2 percent drop in August that was previously reported as a 0.4 percent gain, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Homebuilders are recovering from a slump in demand following the expiration of a government tax break and still face the challenge of mounting foreclosures that are adding to the housing inventory. While rising profits may help corporate spending on structures grow next year, government construction outlays may slow as federal stimulus funds fade and state and local ...
ISM U.S. Factory Index Rises in October to Five-Month High Post Date: 2010-11-01 10:51:40 by go65

Manufacturing in the U.S. expanded more than forecast in October as measures of production and orders placed with factories rose to five-month highs. The Institute for Supply Managements factory index increased to 56.9 last month, the highest since May, from 54.4, the Tempe, Arizona-based group said today. Readings greater than 50 signal growth and the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was for a decline to 54. Companies such as Cummins Inc. are benefiting from growing overseas demand and domestic investment in new equipment, helping sustain the industry that led the recovery. Still, the U.S. economy is growing too slowly to reduce a jobless rate lingering near ...
