No Clear Path For GOP On Health Care Repeal Post Date: 2010-11-04 12:06:22 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans say they'll repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health care law, but tinker and tweak is as far as they're likely to get. And that might not be a bad thing if you're a GOP strategist. It keeps the issue Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell calls the "tipping point" in the midterm elections alive for 2012, when they'll try to unseat Obama himself. Republicans will control the House in January, but they don't have the votes to overcome a Senate filibuster, much less Obama's veto on repeal. Plan B, denying funds to carry out the law, could backfire if it escalates to a government shutdown. Other options call ...
GOP senators fight over failure Post Date: 2010-11-04 10:57:53 by go65

Long-simmering tensions within the Republican Party spilled into public view Wednesday as the pragmatic and conservative wings of the GOP blamed each other in blunt terms for the partys failure to capture the Senate. With tea party-backed candidates going down in Delaware, Colorado and Nevada, depriving Republicans of what would have been a 50-50 Senate, a bloc of prominent senators and operatives said party purists like Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) had foolishly pushed nominees too conservative to win in politically competitive states. Movement conservatives pointed the finger right back at the establishment, accusing the National Republican Senatorial Committee of ...
Bristol Palin didn't turn in her absentee ballot: "Sorry, Mom!" Post Date: 2010-11-03 23:58:22 by go65

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Bristol Palin has been so busy practicing her moves for "Dancing With the Stars," she apparently forgot to send in her absentee ballot. The 20-year-old daughter of former Gov. Sarah Palin, who campaigned for candidates across the nation in this election, told the syndicated TV show "Inside Edition" after Tuesday's night show, "I did not send in my absentee ballot in Alaska. I'm going to be in trouble. Sorry, Mom!" Bristol Palin also voiced her opinion on whether she thinks her mom should run for president in 2012. "Of course I do. I know that she's great and she'd be great for our country," she said. Palin ...
Forty planes and six armoured cars: Obama visit to India the 'biggest ever by a US President' Post Date: 2010-11-03 23:17:54 by WhiteSands

Barack Obama's trip to India next month will be the biggest by any US President - with a staggering 40 aircraft and six armoured cars. Details of the elaborate arrangements for the tree-day presidential visit on November 6 were leaked to Indian newspaper earlier this week. Forty aircraft - including the Air Force One military plane - and six heavily armoured cars will follow the president around the country. The huge security operation comes days after a suspected bomb was found on a cargo plane at East Midlands Airport. The entourage will be the biggest ever in terms of logistics and manpower for any US president. The president himself will be ferried around in a black Cadillac - ...
The Strange Death of Fiscal Policy Post Date: 2010-11-03 21:41:14 by go65

One clear result of the midterms is that we wont have anything like a further round of stimulus. And this, in turn, means that the narrative all the Very Serious People will tell is that fiscal policy was tried, it failed, and thats that. But the real facts dont at all support the conventional wisdom. Actually, let me focus on an international comparison. You often hear the US experience contrasted with Germany: America, were told, went for Keynesian policies, while Germany chose austerity, and Germany did better. But as far as GDP is concerned, Germany did not, in fact, do better: Yes, Germany did better on employment but this reflects policies that ...

In Alaska, Fierce Ballot-By-Ballot Count Looms Post Date: 2010-11-03 19:57:02 by Brian S

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A fierce ballot-by-ballot fight loomed Wednesday in the Alaska Senate race as lawyers and election monitors prepared to descend on the state capital and haggle over how many voters validly penned in the name of Sen. Lisa Murkowski in her historic write-in bid. The overseer of Alaska's elections told The Associated Press that the counting of write-in ballots will begin Nov. 10, and a decision could come a few days later. As of Wednesday, write-in votes had 41 percent; GOP nominee Miller had 34 percent; and Democrat Scott McAdams had 24 percent. The margin between write-ins and Miller was about 13,500 votes. At question now is how many of the voters who cast ...
Did Tea Party cost GOP 50-50 Senate? Post Date: 2010-11-03 18:01:13 by go65

For at least a year now, it's been an open question whether the Tea Party is a force for good or ill within the GOP. On the good side of the ledger, it's served as an energizing and rebranding force, and kept up pressure on GOP leaders to hold the line against Obama and Dems, which clearly served them well. But the flip side is now coming into focus, and with the results just in from the Colorado Senate race, we can now declare that it may have cost the GOP its only shot at a 50-50 Senate. The picture is complicated, but in raw numbers this appears to be the case. The math is pretty straightforward. Right now, after last night, the GOP has 46 seats, and is expected to add one more ...
Michael Bennet Wins Colorado Senate Race Post Date: 2010-11-03 17:40:53 by Brian S

(Newser) Turns out, incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet wasn't premature in declaring himself the winner of Colorado's Senate race. After today's counting, there's no way GOP challenger Ken Buck can catch him, reports the AP. With 97% of returns in, he's got a lead of more than 15,000 votes. Buck, however, hasn't conceded yet. The Denver Post called Bennet the winner this morning, pointing out that an automatic recount would kick in only if the margin were about 3,900 votes. The victory prevents Republicans from picking up a seventh seat. Two other Senate races remain up in the air: GOP incumbent Lisa Murkowski leads in Alaska, notes the Anchorage Daily News, ...
Soon-To-Be GOP Chairman Darrell Issa: Obama Must Answer ‘Several Hundred’ Inquiries Post Date: 2010-11-03 17:21:43 by Brian S

The House Republican set to lead an important committee that will have jurisdiction over many government operations said Wednesday that he expects the White House to respond to "several hundred" letters. As chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Darrell Issa (R-CA) will wield subpoena power, but in an interview with MSNBC, he wouldn't say exactly how he would use it. "I don't have any subpoenas to the White House," Issa said. "I have several hundred letters, most of which have not been responded to that I'll ask the White House to dust off and answer our questions. Some of them are obsolete but most of them are still ...
Lawmaker Who Apologized To BP May Chair House Energy Panel Post Date: 2010-11-03 17:15:23 by Brian S

The Texas lawmaker who apologized to BP for the US government's insistence that the oil giant set up a fund to compensate oil spill victims may soon be the most powerful voice in the House on US energy policy. Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) is a leading contender for the chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, a position he held once before, during the 2004-2006 congressional session. Barton brought attention to himself in June, when the Obama administration announced that BP would set up a $20-billion escrow fund to compensate businesses and households affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. "I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday," Barton ...
Today Is a Day for Conservatives to Thank Barack Obama Post Date: 2010-11-03 17:05:53 by WhiteSands

Today is a day for conservatives to thank Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for destroying the Democratic majority in Congress, stopping the progressive juggernaut and putting Republicans in a perfect position to take control of the Senate in 2012 and eject the Radical-in-Chief from his Oval perch. Watching the MSNBC leftists Olbermann, Matthews and Maddow try to explain away the rejection of their policies by the American people and attribute it to outside money, inept messaging, insufficiently radical policies and poor instructions to their camp followers was a particularly satisfying experience. Keep on thinking that way comrades, encourage Obama and Reid to open the ...
Rand Paul hopes for 'Tea Party Caucus' in Senate Post Date: 2010-11-03 17:01:19 by WhiteSands

Washington (CNN) - Next year's Congress will likely feature an array of fresh faces and entertaining personalities - and it might even have a new voting bloc if Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul has his way. Paul told the National Review Wednesday that if elected, he hopes to band together with like-minded conservatives to form what he called a "Tea Party Caucus" that will advocate for small government ideals. "I think I will be part of a nucleus with Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn, who are unafraid to stand up," Paul said. "If we get another loud voice in there, like Mike Lee from Utah or Sharron Angle from Nevada, there will be a new nucleus. "Term ...

The Olin Corp. announced Wednesday that it will suspend production of centerfire ammunition at its plant in East Alton and re-locate the manufacturing operation to Oxford, Miss. The move comes less than 24 hours after members of the union representing over Olin 800 workers rejected concessions that would have allowed them to keep their jobs. "Our focus always has been on ensuring that we continue producing high-quality products for our customers in an increasingly competitive market," president and CEO Joseph D. Rupp said in a prepared statement. "While I am disappointed that employees represented by the International Association of Machinists chose to reject a proposal ...
Fed to Spend $600 Billion More To Help Boost US Economy Post Date: 2010-11-03 16:27:42 by WhiteSands

The Federal Reserve launched a controversial new policy on Wednesday, committing to buy $600 billion more in government bonds by the middle of next year in an attempt to breathe new life into a struggling U.S. economy. The decision, which takes the Fed into largely uncharted waters, is aimed at further lowering borrowing costs for consumers and businesses still suffering in the aftermath of the worst recession since the Great Depression. The U.S. central bank said it would buy about $75 billion in longer-term Treasury bonds per month. It said it would regularly review the pace and size of the program and adjust it as needed depending on the path of the recovery. In its post-meeting ...
Obama Appeals for 'Common Ground' After Democrats Lose House Post Date: 2010-11-03 16:11:03 by WhiteSands

President Obama, reflecting on his party's historic losses in Congress, appealed Wednesday for both sides of the aisle to find "common ground" while continuing to stand by the policies that were used to hammer his party's candidates in the midterm election. The president walked a tightrope as he sought to explain the results of the election as well as chart a new legislative path in a congressional landscape far more hostile to his agenda. Though his policies were used against Democrats in races across the country, Obama described his decisions to date as "tough" but "right." Yet he also said he must take "direct responsibility" for the ...
Palin Proves That ‘Mama Grizzly’ Has Bite Post Date: 2010-11-03 15:43:14 by WhiteSands

If former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska decides to run for president in 2012, she will now have plenty of help. In New Hampshire, which holds the first primary, Ms. Palin can count on the support of its newest senator, Kelly Ayotte. When the presidential campaign moves to South Carolina, the states new governor, Nikki Haley, will owe her one. And out West, Susana Martinez, the governor-elect in New Mexico, will be ready to help during a potential general election matchup with President Obama as both parties battle over the growing block of Hispanic voters. Ms. Palin wasnt on any ballot. But the self-described Mama Grizzly had plenty at stake Tuesday night as she ...
Tea Party hands Republicans first wins in US mid-term elections Post Date: 2010-11-03 15:37:44 by WhiteSands

REPUBLICANS have claimed their first victories in US elections today, with Tea Party-based Rand Paul and Marco Rubio among those winning their Senate races. Two years after Barack Obama won a landslide election and helped boost majorities of his party in Congress, the outlook was bleak for his ruling Democrats today. The predicted win for Mr Paul is an early boost for the ultra-conservative Tea Party, which has a batch of endorsed Republican candidates running in the mid-term elections. Mr Paul beat state attorney-general Jack Conway, despite a late campaigning effort by former president Bill Clinton to try to win the seat for Democrats. ``There is a Tea Party tidal wave coming to ...
Eric Cantor Can't Explain How Republicans Will Pay for the Bush Tax Cuts Post Date: 2010-11-03 15:35:58 by go65

Rep. Eric Cantor can't explain to either Rachel Maddow or Lawrence O'Donnell what the Republicans would cut to balance the budget and pay for the Bush tax cuts he wants to see extended other than to say they're going to reduce "discretionary spending to '08 levels". He didn't seem to happy with Lawrence O'Donnell pushing him about how he and John Boehner were going to respond when they get forced to either face the wrath of the "tea party", a.k.a. their right wing base when they're forced to make the choice between raising the debt ceiling or crashing the economy.
GM Could Be Free of Taxes for Years Post Date: 2010-11-03 15:23:33 by WhiteSands

General Motors Co. will drive away from its U.S.-government-financed restructuring with a final gift in its trunk: a tax break that could be worth as much as $45 billion. GM, which plans to begin promoting its relisting on the stock exchange to investors this week, wiped out billions of dollars in debt, laid off thousands of employees and jettisoned money-losing brands during its U.S.-funded reorganization last year. Now it turns out, according to documents filed with federal regulators, the revamping left the car maker with another boost as it prepares to return to the stock market. It won't have to pay $45.4 billion in taxes on future profits. The tax benefit stems from so-called ...

Sixteen years ago, in the wake of the election-night landslide that brought him to power, Newt Gingrich asserted a mandate for his Contract with America and a new leadership role for himself. "The Republican Whip in a minority role is a middle linebacker," he said of his previous job. "The Speaker of the House is a head coach." Last night, in the wake of another landslide, incoming Speaker John Boehner sent a very different message: "While our new majority will serve as your voice in the people's House, we must remember it's the president who sets the agenda for our government." The president? You've just been handed 60 House seats by voters ...
Republican Brewer beats Goddard for Arizona governor, winning 4-year term for office Post Date: 2010-11-03 15:09:35 by WhiteSands

PHOENIX Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer has ridden a wave of support for the state's controversial illegal immigration law to defeat her Democratic challenger. Brewer was secretary of state when she became governor in January upon Democrat Janet Napolitano's resignation. Napolitano quit midway through her second term to become a member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet. Brewer's opponent Terry Goddard is the state attorney general who twice ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 1990s. Brewer's campaign was buoyed by her April signing of the immigration law, making her a star among Republicans nationwide. She overcame a painful performance in the only ...

Most of the candidates Sarah Palin endorsed chalked up victories Tuesday. And that scorecard leaves pundits wondering whether she'll now train her sights directly on the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. As CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports, .the former GOP vice presidential nominee backed 43 candidates for the House. Thirty of them won, with races involving nine others still undecided. Her record in Senate races was closer: She endorsed 12 candidates. Seven won. Though it's been 15 months since Palin stepped down as Alaska governor, she was very much in this election, stumping for candidates across the country, skewering President Obama at every turn.
