Top Palin aide is on Soros' payroll Post Date: 2010-11-12 09:10:47 by go65

Glenn Beck spent the past week denouncing the liberal billionaire and philanthropist George Soros as a "puppet master" who is orchestrating a coup "to bring America to her knees." Given Soros' alleged role plotting to destroy the United States, Beck and his Fox viewership might be surprised to learn that one of Sarah Palin's top aides has been on Soros' payroll for years. That would be Republican lobbyist Randy Scheunemann, Palin's foreign policy adviser and a member of her small inner circle. He runs a Washington, D.C., consulting firm called Orion Strategies. Scheunemann and a partner have since 2003 been paid over $150,000 by one of Soros' ...

You may have heard that there's something rotten on Amazon.com. We have learned that it doesn't end with the company's dropping of "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct." Books and videos depicting pre-pubescent Eastern European and Asian girls, some of whom are nude, are listed for sale on Amazon in the U.S. and Japan, as of press time. The listings are disturbing, as you may be able to sense even from the blurred item pictured above. Nudist videos from Eastern Europe appear on the U.S. Amazon retail site; meanwhile, books and videos that feature scantily clad pre-pubescent Eastern European and Asian girls, specifically ...

During the Bush administration, the media made much of political appointees supposedly editing and otherwise interfering with the integrity of the work of career federal government scientists, particularly on studies pertaining to global warming/climate change. Well now the Associated Press is reporting that an inspector general's report from the Interior Department released yesterday found that the Obama White House "edited a drilling safety report in a way that made it falsely appear that scientists and experts backed the administration's six-month moratorium on new deep-water drilling." (emphasis mine) Additionally, "Obama's energy adviser, Carol Browner, ...

Members of a key panel created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus bill, have scheduled a meeting on November 22 to consider ways to prevent "fraud, waste, and abuse of Recovery Act funds." The meeting will be held at the super-luxe Ritz Carlton Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. The group is the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, a sub-committee of the larger Recovery Accountability and Transparency board (sometimes known as the RAT board). The stimulus bill set up the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel, or RIAP, to make recommendations to identify and prevent waste of the bill's $814 billion in stimulus spending. John Boehner to fly commercial as speaker Post Date: 2010-11-11 19:29:43 by WhiteSands

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Wednesday he intends to take commercial flights home when he moves up to speaker in the new Congress. Over the last 20 years, I have flown back and forth to my district on commercial aircraft, and I am going to continue to do that, he told reporters. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, took heat in 2007 when she started flying an Air Force jet that could go nonstop back to her congressional district in California. Her Republican predecessor from Illinois, Denny Hastert, had begun using an Air Force jet as speaker because of the increased security after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Sen. Inhofe: Liberals "Brainwashed" Public Into Opposing Earmarks Post Date: 2010-11-11 13:28:23 by go65

Today, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) pushed back hard against Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-SC) proposal to ban earmarks in the Senate. In an interview on Fox News, Inhofe argued that eliminating earmarks doesn't actually save money, but rather transfers congressional spending power to the White House. "That's why President Obama is all for McCain and DeMint's ban on earmarks," he said. Inhofe went on to claim that the public is only opposed to earmarks because they have been "brainwashed" by "very liberal" members of Congress. INHOFE: The problem is the public has been brainwashed into thinking and a lot of these are the very liberal, uh, members of ...
Obama's Deficit Panel: $4 Trillion in Deficit Reduction Post Date: 2010-11-11 12:17:45 by jwpegler

President Obama's panel on reducing the federal debt released a proposal today aimed at reducing $4 billion in projected deficits through 2020, achieving those savings through deep cuts in defense and domestic spending. It would affect everything from Social Security, to medical spending, to tax rates. It's just a proposal, with ideas that could be taken separately or as a whole. Members of the bipartisan deficit-reduction panel are expected to hold discussions aimed at ironing out differences until Dec. 1, the date of the commission's last public meeting. The panel would need 14 of 18 votes to send the plan to Congress, which would put it up for a vote. Here's a breakdown ...

General Motors Co [GM.UL] is in the final stage of talks to sell equity to long- time Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp (600104.SS) in conjunction with its landmark initial public offering, two people familiar with the matter said. The two government-funded automakers are currently finalizing how much of a stake SAIC would buy in the top U.S. automaker after discussions involving technology sharing and SAIC's ambitions to move beyond the China market, the sources said. Any agreement between GM and SAIC would need Chinese government approval and could still fall apart, the sources cautioned. One person familiar with the matter said previously that SAIC had initially reached out to GM to ...
Amnesty Group Wants Bush Prosecuted For War Crimes Post Date: 2010-11-11 11:58:20 by Brian S

The United States must prosecute former President George W. Bush for torture if his admission in a memoir that he authorized waterboarding holds true, rights group Amnesty International said on Wednesday. In Decision Points, published this week, Bush defended his decision to authorize waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning condemned by some as torture. Bush said the practice was limited to three detainees and led to intelligence breakthroughs that thwarted attacks and saved lives. He told NBC in an interview to publicize the book that his legal adviser had told him it did not fall within the anti-torture act. Amnesty Internationals Senior Director ...
Poll: Public Doesn’t Back GOP Plan To Repeal Heath Care Reform Post Date: 2010-11-11 11:54:32 by Brian S

People back Republican tax cut plans but not the GOP campaign to repeal President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, according to a poll suggesting that the Republicans' big Election Day win was not a mandate for the party's legislative wish list. Fifty-three percent say income tax cuts that soon will expire should be renewed for all including the highest earners, as Republicans want according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll conducted just after last week's elections. But 44 percent would continue the cuts only for those earning under $250,000 a year which Obama favors or let them lapse for everyone. When it comes to the health care law Obama ...
Major GOP Donor Scammed Millions With Phony Veterans Group, Authorities Say Post Date: 2010-11-11 11:48:59 by Brian S

Top law enforcement officials in Ohio are spending this Veterans Day hunting for the man they believe exploited the good name of America's warriors to abscond with more than $100 million. The eccentric looking Florida man went by the name Bobby Thompson. As detailed in a report airing on World News with Diane Sawyer tonight, Thompson called his charity the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, and for eight years he raised money for the group, mostly through phone solicitations. He told donors the group was assisting needy veterans, and garnished this pitch with dollops of credibility by donating small amounts to legitimate veterans' groups. Federal election records show he invested ...
LaHood to GOP governors: No trains, no money Post Date: 2010-11-11 09:45:46 by go65

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration has a message for Republican governors who campaigned against the president's high-speed rail program: Build the trains or give back the money. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Tuesday rejected a request from Gov.-elect John Kasich in Ohio to use the $400 million in federal funds pledged to that state's train project on other projects like road construction or freight lines. "I would like high-speed rail to be part of Ohio's future," LaHood wrote. But if the state won't go forward, it's necessary "to wind down Ohio's involvement in the project so that we do not waste taxpayers' money," he said. A ...

On one side, we have David Stockman, the budget director for President Ronald Reagan. On the other, it's Rep. Mike Pence, the conservative Indiana Republican and potential presidential candidate. The venue: This Week with Christiane Amanpour. The topic: What's worse, raising taxes or letting the deficit run wild? Stockman said the deficit could ruin the country and savaged the Republican Party's refusal to consider tax increases. "Both parties, unfortunately, became free lunch parties, the Republicans cutting taxes every time they had a chance, never doing anything about spending, and the Democrats digging in to defend everything that was there," Stockman said. ...
Bush book reveals McConnell's hypocrisy on Iraq (Asked Bush to reduce troops) Post Date: 2010-11-10 18:39:55 by go65

Before the 2006 midterm elections in which Republicans ultimately took a clobbering, Sen. Mitch McConnell asked President Bush in a private Oval Office meeting to pull some troops out of Iraq in order to boost the GOP's chances, Bush reports in his new memoir. And in the same month -- September 2006 -- that McConnell made his private request, he publicly blasted Democrats for calling for a reduction of troops in Iraq, saying that their position endangered Americans. "The Democrat leadership finally agrees on something -- unfortunately it's retreat," McConnell said in a Sept. 5, 2006, statement in response to a Democratic letter asking Bush to change his Iraq policy. ...
Democrats Pressing Pelosi To Step Aside Post Date: 2010-11-10 18:34:30 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a fresh sign of turmoil among defeated Democrats, a growing number of the rank and file say they won't support House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a politically symbolic roll call when the new Congress meets in January. "The reality is that she is politically toxic," said Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley, one of several Democrats who are trying to pressure Pelosi to step aside as her party's leader in the wake of historic election losses to Republicans last week. Pelosi startled many Democrats with a quick postelection announcement that she would run for minority leader. She has yet to draw an opponent for the post. Party elections are scheduled for next week, ...

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A federal court judge has denied a request by Alaska GOP Senate candidate Joe Miller to immediately stop the state Division of Elections from counting write-in ballots. U.S. District Court Judge Ralph Beistline said Wednesday in his written decision that Miller has demonstrated no potential for irreparable harm. Incumbent Lisa Murkowski ran as a write-in candidate in the Nov. 2 election. Miller is running second to write-in ballots. Miller wants to prevent the state from using discretion in determining voter intent and to throw out ballots that misspell Murkowski's name. State attorneys said an 18-hour window to respond was unfair and there were no ...
Washington state bans "blackout in can"drinks (Alcohol + Caffeine) Post Date: 2010-11-10 18:05:18 by Hondo68

(Reuters) - Washington state's Liquor Control Board has voted to ban sales of high-alcohol energy drinks, widely known as "blackout in a can," following the hospitalization of nine students in the state last month. Washington is the second state to outlaw the new crop of highly caffeinated, heavy-alcohol beverages popular with young people after Michigan banned them earlier this month. The emergency ban will last for 120 days after November 17, while the board goes through the procedure of introducing a permanent ban. Major brewers such as Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller stopped making drinks mixing alcohol and caffeine after pressure from various states, but smaller ...
Budget year begins with $140.4B October deficit (down 20% from FY09) Post Date: 2010-11-10 15:32:23 by go65

WASHINGTON The federal government began the new budget year with a deficit that fell 20 percent from a year ago but still the third highest October imbalance on record. The Treasury Department said Wednesday that last month's deficit totaled $140.4 billion, down by $35.9 billion from the record holder for the month, an imbalance of $176.4 billion in October 2009. Even with the improvement, the red ink last month set the stage for what is expected to be a third consecutive year of $1 trillion-plus deficits. The flood of red ink contributed to a political backlash that cost Democrats dearly in last week's elections. The decline in the October deficit compared with a year ago ...

The co-chairmen of President Barack Obamas debt-reduction commission will propose cuts to Social Security and Medicare, as well as reductions in income tax rates in exchange for curbing tax breaks, according to a Republican aide who attended the meeting. The chairmens plan is already causing some Democrats and Republicans on the 18-member commission to balk. The plan will be announced at 1 p.m. Washington time today, said commission spokesman Fred Baldassaro. This is not a package that I could support, Representative Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat, said during a break in a private meeting by the commission. She said any package able to win 14 votes on the ...

Police: Mail Bomb Could Have Exploded Over Eastern US Post Date: 2010-11-10 12:32:13 by Brian S

LONDON (AP) -- British police say a mail bomb intercepted last month at an English airport could have exploded over the East Coast of the United States. Police said in a statement Wednesday that forensic evidence shows the device, originally sent from Yemen, could have been activated over the eastern seaboard had it not been removed from a cargo plane in the U.K. Authorities on both sides of the Atlantic said they only narrowly thwarted the plot. They say terrorists in Yemen hid two powerful bombs inside printers and shipped them to addresses in Chicago. One bomb was intercepted at East Midlands Airport and the other was discovered at a cargo facility in Dubai.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Interior Department's inspector general says the White House edited a drilling safety report in a way that made it falsely appear that scientists and experts supported the idea of the administration's six-month ban on new drilling. The inspector general says the editing changes resulted "in the implication that the moratorium recommendation had been peer reviewed." But it hadn't been. The scientists were only asked to review new safety measures for offshore drilling. "There was no intent to mislead the public," said Kendra Barkoff, a spokeswoman for Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who also recommended in the May 27 safety report that ...

It looks like George W. Bush and Kanye West have buried the hatchetat least for now. In a taped interview on NBC's "Today" show, the often-impulsive rapper told Matt Lauer that he now regrets having said after Hurricane Katrina that Bush "doesn't care about black people." "I would tell George Bush: In my moment of frustration, I didn't have the grounds to call him a racist," West said. "I believe that in a situation of high emotion like that, we as human beings don't always choose the right words." In Bush's new memoir, "Decision Points," Bush calls the moment "disgusting" and the lowest ebb of his ...

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- The subprime mortgage crisis isnt the only calamity Wall Street created thats upending the finances of U.S. states and cities. For more than a decade, banks and insurance companies convinced governments and nonprofits that financial engineering would lower interest rates on bonds sold for public projects such as roads, bridges and schools. That failed promise has cost more than $4 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, as hundreds of borrowers from the Bay Area Toll Authority in Oakland, California, to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, quietly paid Wall Street to end agreements since 2008.
