Senate approves long-delayed food safety bill

Washington (CNN) -- The Senate passed a food safety bill Tuesday to give more power to the Food and Drug Administration, more than a year after the House of Representatives passed a similar measure. The bill, designed to bolster the safety of the nation's food supply, passed 73 to 25. A version of the bill was passed by the House of Representatives in July of 2009 but had languished in the Senate, a fact that has angered some food safety advocates. Non-profit advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest was one of the groups that released a report in September urging Senators to pass the stalled bill. At that time, the group said there had been 85 recalls of ...

Democrats to Test Republicans' Mettle on Tax-Cut Votes Starting This Week

Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Congressional Democrats are ready to test Republican resolve on taxes this week by forcing showdown votes on their proposal to extend middle-class tax cuts. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will schedule a vote this week on legislation that would retain lower tax rates and increased credits that apply to the first $250,000 of a married couple’s gross income or $200,000 for a single person, said her assistant, Maryland Democrat Chris Van Hollen. The Senate will vote “by next week” on Democrats’ proposal to extend middle-income tax cuts, Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus told reporters yesterday. “There should be an early vote on ...

A once prominent name has been erased from the history of the American Right after World War II. Readers of National Review in the late 1950s and early ‘60s would have found it difficult to miss the contributions of Revilo P. Oliver, among the most frequent book reviewers for the magazine. Oliver, who taught at the University of Illinois and read 11 languages, including Sanskrit, was a classical philologist of great distinction, and his articles for the magazine displayed his remarkable erudition. Oliver was a close friend of the founder and editor of National Review, William F. Buckley Jr. Buckley went sailing with him and described him in Cruising Speed as “without exception ...

Wikileaks released another 250,000 classified documents over the weekend, this time from the Department of State. Since the details concern the everyday workings of U.S. diplomacy, the leaks have much greater potential for scandal than the previous series on Iraq and Afghanistan. Few of the files are currently available at the organization’s site (due to denial of service attacks from you-know-who), but major media outlets have deigned to provide us the most “shocking” revelations: Saudi King Abdullah and other Gulf potentates have been exhorting the White House to attack Iran. The Israelis have already seized this opportunity to justify their own pressure campaign on ...

Islamofascism: Now that a federal judge has unsealed evidence showing the three most prominent Muslim groups in America support terror, Washington must cut all ties with them. U.S. District Judge Jorge Solis has ruled there is "ample evidence" to support the Justice Department's decision to blacklist the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as unindicted co-conspirators in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation terror trial. He refused requests to strike their names from the list. At the trial, which ended in guilty verdicts on all 108 counts, FBI agents testified that ISNA, NAIT and ...

Democratic Group Would Eliminate Social Security for Wealthy

A Democratic-led policy group is proposing changes in Social Security that party members have resisted for years in an effort to pave the way for recommendations this week by President Barack Obama’s deficit-cutting commission. Washington-based Third Way said its plan would raise the retirement age, trim or eliminate Social Security benefits for high-income retirees, limit cost-of- living increases and provide money to help young workers create private retirement accounts. The proposal, to be released after the presidential panel is due to issue its report on Dec. 1, is timed to help create a buffer for congressional Democrats to support politically unpopular deficit-trimming ...

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey owes the federal government more than $271 million for canceling a rail tunnel connecting the state with New York. An invoice from the Federal Transit Administration's chief financial officer to NJ Transit's executive director was sent Nov. 24. It says the amount of $271,101,291 is due within 30 days. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the correspondence Monday. It's money the government wants New Jersey to repay for work done on the Hudson River tunnel before Republican Gov. Chris Christie terminated the project. The notification is formal demand for payment and follows a warning letter earlier this month estimating the charges. NJ ...

The September jobs report was just released and demonstrates that America is on a far slower path to recovery than anyone originally predicted. Despite this, the shedding of government jobs cloaks a glimmer of hope: more private sector jobs have been created this year than during the entire Bush administration. Read that again: 2010 has had more private job creation than during the entire 8 year tenure of George W. Bush. This is the 9th straight month of private sector job growth in the midst of a devastating recession that has put a serious strain mostly on the poor and middle class. There has been a total of 863,000 private sector jobs created in 2010, exceeding the total created under ...

CIA Implanted Electrodes In Brains Of Unsuspecting Soldiers, Suit Alleges

A group of military veterans are suing to get the CIA to come clean about allegedly implanting remote control devices in their brains. It's well known that the CIA began testing substances like LSD on soldiers beginning in the 1950s but less is known about allegations that the agency implanted electrodes in subjects. A 2009 lawsuit (.pdf) claimed that the CIA intended to design and test septal electrodes that would enable them to control human behavior. The lawsuit said that because the government never disclosed the risks, the subjects were not able to give informed consent.s Bruce Price, one plaintiff in the lawsuit, believes that MRI scans confirm that the CIA placed a device in ...

Pay Freeze Sought for Federal Employees as Obama Tries to Rein In Deficit

Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama proposed freezing the pay of federal civilian employees this year and next as part of an effort to bring the budget deficit under control. The freeze would hit all civilian workers in the government, including those at the Department of Defense. Military personnel wouldn’t be affected. The move would save about $2 billion for the rest of fiscal 2011 and more than $60 billion over the next decade, according to the White House. Getting the deficit under control will require broad sacrifice and “that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government,” Obama said today in Washington. The administration projects ...

Common Sense and the Tea Parties

At the time of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, there was one word that was always used to stop American protests in their tracks. That word was “independence.” The minute anybody started getting rambunctious about Britain’s right to tax America, a chorus went up about how they were really being disloyal. Patrick Henry was forced to sit down by cries of “Treason!” when he defied the word. The simple fact was that the colonies could not complain about the power of Britain over America until they faced the fact that the whole idea of their being loyal to London was discussed. It was common sense. So Thomas Pain wrote a Mantra book called “Common Sense.” It ...

We often (very often) hear the jingoism “take America back” by all and sundry on both sides of the political/social divide. Particularly on the conservative side we see the notion put forward that The America is somehow far adrift from her foundational roots, as laid down by the Founding Fathers. But is this really the case? Is modern Americanism fundamentally different from 18th century revolutionary Americanism? What would the Founding Fathers think of The America today? In addressing that, we must first consider what The America is and what The America is not. What The America is not, is a nation. What The America is, essentially, is a religion/empire, with much akin to a ...

By Patrick J. Buchanan This writer was 11 years old when the shocking news came on June 25, 1950, that North Korean armies had crossed the DMZ. Within days, Seoul had fallen. Routed U.S. and Republic of Korea troops were retreating toward an enclave in the southeast corner of the peninsula that came to be known as the Pusan perimeter. In September came Gen. MacArthur's masterstroke: the Marine landing at Inchon behind enemy lines, the cut-off and collapse of the North Korean Army, recapture of Seoul and the march to the Yalu. "Home by Christmas!" we were all saying. Then came the mass intervention of a million "volunteers" of the People's Liberation Army ...

Here at UR, we don't take a lot of interest in elections. Washington is what it is. Does Thai whorehouse gonorrhea respond to penicillin? Washington has spent the last 75 years making itself immune to politics. It would be disrespectful to suggest that it hasn't had some success in the matter. That said, you might get lucky. Or you might get a strain that eats the penicillin. Most Americans do not read UR. They do believe in their caring, fatherly government. It no doubt strikes them as curious that, after eight years of Bush von Cheney, they voted for hope and change, and got... their balls stroked? Which could be one of these strange Potomac coincidences. But as the ...

Union Drops Health Coverage for Workers’ Children

One of the largest union-administered health-insurance funds in New York is dropping coverage for the children of more than 30,000 low-wage home attendants, union officials said. The union blamed financial problems it said were caused by the state’s health department and new national health-insurance requirements. The fund is administered by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union. Union officials said the state compelled the fund to start buying coverage from a third party, which increased premiums by 60%. State health officials denied forcing the union fund to make the switch, saying the fund had been struggling financially ...

TSA Circus Reveals Dangers of Marxist Politically Correct Security Rules

Enormous problems exist in TSA airline screening resulting from the nonsensical mixing of Political Correctness into safety procedures. Specifically, the problem is doctrines of progressive social engineering have become so powerful a centerpiece in minds of the elites that our very safety is threatened by this misbegotten ideology. Unsurprisingly, Political Correctness (PC) is not a randomly occurring phenomenon. Yet many will be shocked to discover PC is a product of social Marxism directed by expatriate German intellectuals in America after WWI. This article shall briefly examine the history of Marxist Political Correctness as well as to the larger problem of liberal ideology and its ...

Most of what we need to think about is stuff at is so obvious that it isn’t noticed. In the 1950s conservatives could have ruled America, but they sold out all principle for two words: Republican and Democrat. The conservative majority was forgotten at presidential nominations because they had thrown away their vote. The Solid South would vote for a Communist if he had the Democratic label and conservatives outside the South would vote for a NAMBLA candidate if he had a Republican label. Only on The House Un-American Activities Committee did you see how America COULD have been governed. Party made no real difference. HUAC was run by Dixiecrats and Ashbrook conservatives. But the ...

To us of an old-school conservative bent, you don’t get problematic government without problematic citizens. While most of our fellow Americans think that we’re in the grips of some vast conspiracy, military-industrial complex, corporate takeover or media domination, we see a clearer truth: Most people cannot manage their own affairs past the next paycheck, and their incompetence invites “managers” who then rule over them. For all of known history this is how civilizations have risen to a hierarchical state. Most people can handle a few things, but get lost beyond that, so they pick leaders. Normally, this is benevolent. But when the leaders start turning back to the ...

LOS ANGELES - US authorities thwarted a plot to blow up a car bomb at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the western state of Oregon and arrested the suspected Somali-US bomber, officials said Saturday. The Justice Department identified the chief suspect as 19-year-old Mohamed Osman Mohamud of the town of Corvallis, a naturalized US citizen of Somali descent, who will appear in court on Monday. Mohamud was arrested Friday evening after he tried to remotely detonate what he thought was an explosives-laden van parked near the tree ceremony, which went ahead in state capital Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. But the device was in fact a fake supplied by undecover agents from the ...

Marines Most Resistant to Openly Gay Troops By JULIE WATSON Nov 27, 2010 OCEANSIDE, Calif. – They are the few, the proud and perhaps the military's biggest opponents of lifting the ban on openly gay troops. Most of those serving in America's armed forces have no strong objections to repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" law, according to a Pentagon survey of 400,000 active duty and reservists that is scheduled for release Tuesday. But the survey found resistance to repealing the ban strongest among the Marines, according to The Washington Post. It's an attitude apparently shared by their top leader, Commandant Gen. James Amos, who has said that the ...

In the wake of the Tea Party's 2010 victories and losses, a new effort is underway to improve vetting and candidate recruitment. It is an explicit acknowledgement of past mistakes to avoid in the future. "I will say this when I'm talking with these local leaders they have mentioned by name Christine O'Donnell and Sharron Angle and said we'd prefer not to have that again in 2012. In many ways they felt it was damaging to the movement to have candidates like," Ryun said. It is a ...
