More people tapped food stamps to pay for groceries in September as the recession and lackluster recovery have prompted more Americans to turn to government safety net programs to make ends meet. Some 42.9 million people collected food stamps last month, up 1.2% from the prior month and 16.2% higher than the same time a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the Westboro Baptist Church's Web site, the Kansas church known for its anti-homosexual protests will protest Elizabeth Edwards's funeral in Raleigh, N.C., near the Edenton Street United Methodist Church on Saturday. Elizabeth Edwards died Tuesday from cancer. Westboro's Web site does not say why it has singled out Edwards's funeral, but it regularly attends funerals of military personnel. The Edenton Street United Methodist Church said it is aware of the planned protest, and senior staff officials are meeting to decide what to do about the issues surrounding it.

As I noted in yesterday’s Nevada News & Views e-newsletter, the “Paultards” – the fringe elements of the Ron Paul movement, not the sane ones – attempted to hijack our online presidential poll before it was even announced to the newsletter subscribers it was intended for. Apparently someone from their base camp on Alpha Centuri sent an email instructing the Paultards of the world to unite and try to skew our poll. It's well documented that Sarah Palin has problems with Democrats and independents, but the first seven states where we've looked at the 2012 Presidential election make it clear that she has a Republican problem as well. It's not that Republicans don't like her- on our last national poll 68% rated her favorably, making her easily the most popular prospective 2012 candidate with Mike Huckabee at 63%, Newt Gingrich at 57%, and Mitt Romney at 56%. The last House race of the midterm elections has been decided. Politico reports that Republican Randy Altschuler has conceded to Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop in New York. This means there will be 242 Republicans and 193 Democrats in the new Congress that convenes Jan. 5. Republicans won 63 seats in the 2010 elections to take the majority. Newsday reports that Altschuler, who spent $2.8 million of his own money on the race, will not seek a full hand recount of the nearly 200,000 ballots that were cast. Bishop had a lead of at least 263 votes.

The mayor of Union City NJ held a press conference on Tuesday blasting Imam Faisal Rauf, not because he is involved in the plans to build a mosque near the Ground Zero site, but because the city alleges he is a terrible landlord. Just to be clear, the "extension of the unemployment benefits" is an extension of the qualifying dates for the various tiers of benefits, and not additional weeks of benefits. There is no additional help for the so-called "99ers". Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) comes in four tiers: Tier I is for 20 additional weeks; Tier II is for up to 14 weeks; Tier III is for up to 13 weeks; Tier IV is for up to 6 weeks. As an example, if a worker was receiving Tier I benefits, they will be able to move to Tier II benefits with this proposed extension. On Sunday, a 4-year-old Mesa boy died at Phoenix Children’s Hospital from massive head trauma.
