Food Stamp Rolls Continue to Rise
Post Date: 2010-12-09 15:05:04 by WhiteSands

More people tapped food stamps to pay for groceries in September as the recession and lackluster recovery have prompted more Americans to turn to government safety net programs to make ends meet. Some 42.9 million people collected food stamps last month, up 1.2% from the prior month and 16.2% higher than the same time a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nationwide 14% of the population relied on food stamps as of September but in some states the percentage was much higher. In Washington, D.C., Mississippi and Tennessee – the states with the largest share of citizens receiving benefits – more than a fifth of the population in each was collecting food ...

Democrats delay action on young immigrants bill

WASHINGTON – The Senate moved Thursday to delay a politically charged showdown vote on legislation carving out a path to legal status for foreign-born youngsters brought to this country illegally, putting off but probably not preventing the measure's demise. Facing GOP objections, Democrats put aside the so-called Dream Act and said they'd try again to advance it before year's end. They're short of the 60 votes needed to do so, however, and critics in both parties quickly said they won't change their minds in the waning days of the Democratic-controlled Congress. "This is mainly a political exercise rather than a serious attempt to deal with our broken ...

Pelosi pledges to win changes as House Dems reject tax-cut deal

The House Democratic Caucus on Thursday rejected the tax deal negotiated between the White House and Senate Republicans. The non-binding vote of the caucus held during a closed-door meeting puts tremendous pressure on House leaders to win changes to a proposal the White House has presented as a "take it or leave it" package. (To see where Democrats fall on the tax compromise, check out The Hill's Whip Count here) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a brief statement after the vote indicating that lower-chamber Democrats will fight to alter the bill. "We will continue discussions with the President and our Democratic and Republican colleagues in the days ahead ...

According to the Westboro Baptist Church's Web site, the Kansas church known for its anti-homosexual protests will protest Elizabeth Edwards's funeral in Raleigh, N.C., near the Edenton Street United Methodist Church on Saturday. Elizabeth Edwards died Tuesday from cancer. Westboro's Web site does not say why it has singled out Edwards's funeral, but it regularly attends funerals of military personnel. The Edenton Street United Methodist Church said it is aware of the planned protest, and senior staff officials are meeting to decide what to do about the issues surrounding it.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House Democratic Caucus has voted to reject President Barack Obama's tax deal with Republicans in its current form. By voice vote, the rank and file Democrats passed a resolution Thursday that said the tax package should not come to the floor of the House for consideration. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., introduced the resolution. Said Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas: "If it's take it or leave it, we'll leave it." THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. WASHINGTON (AP) — House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Thursday congressional Democrats have no choice but to accept the tax ...

Obama Scrambles to Win Dem Support on Tax Cut Bill as Conservatives Waver
Post Date: 2010-12-09 12:08:29 by Brian S

President Obama is scrambling to get his party on board with a costly package of tax cuts and spending measures, as a handful of prominent conservatives begin to question whether the deal Republicans brokered just days ago is good enough. Opinions of the proposal appear to be fluid, as Obama and his economic advisers make the hard sell to wary Democrats -- with Republicans waiting on the sidelines for the caucus to work out its issues. Congressional Democrats angry about the concessions Obama made to the GOP are beginning to ease their opposition, and some concede the package has enough party support to pass. At the same time, 54 House Democrats just penned a letter to House Speaker Nancy ...

As I noted in yesterday’s Nevada News & Views e-newsletter, the “Paultards” – the fringe elements of the Ron Paul movement, not the sane ones – attempted to hijack our online presidential poll before it was even announced to the newsletter subscribers it was intended for. Apparently someone from their base camp on Alpha Centuri sent an email instructing the Paultards of the world to unite and try to skew our poll. As a result, I decided to remove Dr. Paul’s name from the poll just before announcing it to NN&V readers. At which point the online Paultard trolls almost immediately began voting for “Somebody else.” Again, this was occurring ...

Lovers necessarily keep or share secrets. Being in a healthy relationship means achieving a certain level of intimacy, where shared knowledge of each others’ weaknesses and insecurities is protected by a bond of mutual trust. Sometimes lovers might do devilish things that outsiders wouldn’t understand, or shouldn’t be privy to, and this is fine. But by and large, what they do is simply no one else’s business. But imagine that the man in the relationship kept it a secret that he had other women on the side, kids, a criminal record, venereal disease, and basically betrayed his lover in every way imaginable, unbeknownst to her? Now imagine a third party felt it was their ...

Palin's Republican Problem

It's well documented that Sarah Palin has problems with Democrats and independents, but the first seven states where we've looked at the 2012 Presidential election make it clear that she has a Republican problem as well. It's not that Republicans don't like her- on our last national poll 68% rated her favorably, making her easily the most popular prospective 2012 candidate with Mike Huckabee at 63%, Newt Gingrich at 57%, and Mitt Romney at 56%. It's that a lot of the Republicans who don't like her- in contrast to the Republicans who don't like Huckabee, Gingrich, or Romney- aren't willing to hold their nose and vote for her in the general election. The last House race of the midterm elections has been decided. Politico reports that Republican Randy Altschuler has conceded to Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop in New York. This means there will be 242 Republicans and 193 Democrats in the new Congress that convenes Jan. 5. Republicans won 63 seats in the 2010 elections to take the majority. Newsday reports that Altschuler, who spent $2.8 million of his own money on the race, will not seek a full hand recount of the nearly 200,000 ballots that were cast. Bishop had a lead of at least 263 votes.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying to use the tax cut package President Barack Obama brokered with Republicans to legalize online poker, POLITICO has learned — a move that could further complicate the deal Obama announced Monday. Already, the online poker proposal has exposed the Nevada Democrat to charges of flip-flopping on a controversial issue, as well as using his Senate leadership position to repay big casino interests that helped him win reelection in a hard-fought campaign against Republican Sharron Angle last month. The mayor of Union City NJ held a press conference on Tuesday blasting Imam Faisal Rauf, not because he is involved in the plans to build a mosque near the Ground Zero site, but because the city alleges he is a terrible landlord. Mayor Brian Stack accused the Imam of ignoring dozens of violations reported at two apartment buildings he owns in the NJ city. The buildings have been cited for uncollected garbage, mold , fire safety violations and a lack of heat among other things. The mayor held his press conference outside one of the buildings. On Wednesday city officials intend to go to court to attempt to have a custodial receiver appointed to take charge of the rundown properties. Mayor ...

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Price was struggling with memories of the sexual abuse he says he suffered at the hands of a high school teacher, so he reached out to the religious order that runs the Catholic school he attended. De La Salle Christian Brothers, which educates more than 1 million students around the world, apologized for Price's pain and sought to reassure him. The order's Midwest leader said the brother in question had been forbidden from contact with anyone under 18 and was working in a prison. But in a 1995 letter obtained by The Associated Press, the leader neglected to mention something: The prison was for males from age 10 to 21. The writer of that letter, Brother ...

MYFOXNY.COM - Fernando Mateo, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, is telling cab drivers that for their own protection they should profile potential passengers who are black and Latino. Mateo, who identifies himself as both black and Hispanic, made his comments this week after a livery cab driver was shot several times by a man police describe as Hispanic. The suspect was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, which Mateo has said is a red flag. The private cab driver was fighting for his life after being shot at least four times by a robber who ended up getting less than $100. Dramatic video released by New York police showed the struggle between the gunman and a driver. ...

Lowest pay raise for military in nearly 50 years?

As our government plans to extend tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, they're also proposing the lowest pay raise for the military in almost 50 years. You heard right. As our servicemen and women return to the battlefield for their third or fourth tours of duty, the people who represent us think it's a good time to cut corners there. Extend tax breaks for millionaires and the middle finger for the armed forces. The Obama administration has proposed a 1.4 percent pay raise for the military in 2011 – the lowest since 1962, when they got no raise. The administration claims a 1.4 percent raise would match the average for the private sector, and they say it's on top of ...

Fox has learned that Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Jay Inslee (D-WA) are crafting a letter to share with the House Democratic Caucus that would try to prevent the Speaker from bringing the tax bill to the floor. They hope to get 60 signatures on their letter (which is still being drafted) and then force a vote in the caucus. DeFazio says he thinks that if a majority of House Democrats are against this compromise, they shouldn't bring it to the floor. In other words, they are seeking a majority of the majority to move this and a senior House democratic source indicates they don't know if they have a majority of democrats, saying they haven't whipped this ...

Winfrey has heard the rumors, but denies she's gay NEW YORK – Oprah Winfrey says she's not a lesbian, not even a little bit. Her long personal and professional connection with Gayle King has sparked rumors that they are gay, but Winfrey denies it in an upcoming interview with ABC's Barbara Walters. "I'm not even kind of a lesbian," Winfrey says. Persistent gossip to the contrary annoys her, she says, explaining that, if it were true, "Why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life." Asked to describe her relationship with King, Winfrey calls her "the mother I never had, the sister everybody would want. She is the friend ...

Mayor Parker Leaves Press Conference Amidst Rumors HOUSTON - Mayor Annise Parker abruptly walked out of her own press conference at City Hall Tuesday afternoon. That came after reporters repeatedly questioned Parker about rumors she and some other council members are trying to create a majority gay council district in Houston. "I'm out of here...this is not what this press conference is about," Parker said. Rumors have run wild after Conservative Councilman Mike Sullivan was removed from a position that would oversee redistricting in the city. Keith Olbermann: Obama May Not Only Not Get Re-Elected; “He May Not Even be Re-Nominated” – Video 12/7/10

Here is video from MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and his “Special Comment” tonight where he urged Americans to support Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and others on the Left who have pledged to fight President Obama on his deal with Republicans to extend the Bush Tax Cuts for all Americans. Olbermann said: “It is not disloyalty to the Democratic Party to tell a Democratic President he is wrong. It is not disloyalty to tell him he is “god**amed wrong.” He went on to essentially threaten that if Obama continues ignoring his base and compromising with Republicans, he may not only not get re-elected – he may “not get renominated.”

This Is Important: The Unemployment Insurance Extension Does NOTHING For The 99ers

Just to be clear, the "extension of the unemployment benefits" is an extension of the qualifying dates for the various tiers of benefits, and not additional weeks of benefits. There is no additional help for the so-called "99ers". Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) comes in four tiers: Tier I is for 20 additional weeks; Tier II is for up to 14 weeks; Tier III is for up to 13 weeks; Tier IV is for up to 6 weeks. As an example, if a worker was receiving Tier I benefits, they will be able to move to Tier II benefits with this proposed extension. Without the extension of the qualifying dates, workers would not be able to move to the next tier. These two tables are ...

Vice President Biden will address a fuming House Democratic caucus on Wednesday, a day after lawmakers roundly panned a tax cut deal the White House negotiated with Republicans. At a caucus meeting Tuesday night, more than a dozen House Democrats stood up to criticize President Obama’s tax proposal, complaining that the administration caved too quickly on party priorities while shutting out Democratic lawmakers, sources in the room said. Of the 15 to 20 Democrats who spoke at the meeting, only a couple voiced support for the proposal, according to a Democrat in the room. “I don’t think the president should count on Democratic votes to get this deal passed,” Rep. ...
