Repealing health-care reform would cost hundreds of billions of dollars -- and Eric Cantor knows it Post Date: 2011-01-05 11:21:41 by go65

House Republicans are in a pickle: One of their new rules says that new legislation must be paid for. But the health-care bill reduces the federal deficit by more than $100 billion over the next 10 years. Luckily, they've figured out an answer to their problem: They've decided to simply exempt the repeal bill from the rules. That means they're beginning the 112th Congress by lifting their own rules in order to take a vote that will increase the deficit. Change we can believe in, and all that. Republicans are aware that this looks, well, horrible. So they're trying to explain why their decision to lift the rule requiring fiscal responsibility is actually fiscally ...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Private sector payrolls soared 297,000 in December, payroll processor ADP announced Wednesday. The gain marks the 11th consecutive month of increases, and was much larger than economists had expected. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com were forecasting an increase of 100,000 jobs. The increase in hiring was led by the services sector, with employers adding 270,000 jobs in December. That's the highest jump on record, ADP said. That's a positive sign for the economy, with the government's highly-anticipated monthly unemployment report due Friday. Job cuts on the decline: In another sign that the weak job market might have bottomed out, 2010 was the ...
Former Florida Gov. Bush Doesn't Rule Out Presidential Run In 2016 Post Date: 2011-01-04 18:38:03 by Brian S

5:47 P.M. TALLAHASSEE Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he isn't ruling out a possible presidential run in 2016. At the inauguration today of new Gov. Rick Scott, Bush repeated his stance that he's positively not running for president in 2012. When asked about 2016, Bush said he would never say never, but reiterated that 2012 is out. Bush is the son of former President George H.W. Bush and younger brother of former President George W. Bush. He received the loudest ovation from a predominantly Republican audience when introduced at the inaugural. Jeb Bush was Florida's governor from 1999 to 2007. He has remained in the private sector since leaving office and ...
Sacked Navy Captain Once Had A Bright Future Post Date: 2011-01-04 18:31:53 by Brian S

(01-04) 14:58 PST Norfolk, Va. (AP) -- Navy Capt. Owen Honors was an officer with a bright future, a hotshot fighter jock who rose to become commander of one of the most storied ships in the fleet, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. His undoing was a sense of humor that seemed a throwback to the Navy's raucous, macho Tailhook days nearly two decades ago. Honors, 49, was sacked as commander of the Enterprise on Tuesday for what the Navy called a "profound lack of good judgment and professionalism" in making and showing to his crew raunchy comic videos three or four years ago. In the videos, Honors used gay slurs and pantomimed masturbation. Once on track to be an admiral, ...
Navy’s New Warship: Bargain, Death Trap or Both? Post Date: 2011-01-04 18:29:06 by Brian S

After years of botched contracts and cost overruns, the Navy has finally signed contracts to buy a bunch of its speedy, near-shore Littoral Combat Ships at a per-copy price nearly a third cheaper than expected. But hold the champagne. The cost-cutting that made the LCS so affordable might also doom the ships to watery graves in future conflicts. We have a warship design that is not expected to fight and survive in the very environment in which it was produced to do so, one critic at the U.S. Naval Institute blog claims, describing the LCS as poorly armed and poorly protected for dangerous, crowded coastal waters. When the LCS deals were announced ...

U.S. To Detail $100 Billion In Pentagon Savings, Cuts: Sources Post Date: 2011-01-04 11:57:41 by Brian S

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to announce as early as Thursday about $100 billion in savings for the Pentagon and cuts to some weapons programs, sources said on Monday. The announcement will detail a plan that military services have been hammering out for months. The Pentagon is under increasing pressure to cut its budget given huge federal deficits and a reduction of troops in Iraq. One weapons program expected to end is the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, a 40-ton amphibious landing craft that General Dynamics Corp is developing for the Marine Corps, said two sources, who were not authorized to speak on the record. Gates is also likely to cancel a ...

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Barack Obama's job approval rating reached the symbolic 50% mark in the latest three-day average from Gallup Daily tracking. Obama's approval rating has been in the mid-40% range for much of the latter half of 2010. He last hit 50% approval in a three-day average near the end of May/beginning of June. The latest results are based on Gallup Daily tracking conducted Dec. 28-29 and Jan. 2. Gallup did not conduct its daily poll Dec. 30-Jan. 1. It is not yet clear if Obama's approval rating will stay above 50% in the coming days; his approval rating in each of the individual days comprising the latest three-day average has remained near the 50% mark. Obamacare Mess is Legacy of Democrats' Brief Moment of Power Post Date: 2011-01-04 09:21:53 by no gnu taxes

As Republicans take power in the House and play a more influential role in the Senate, it's good to think back a year. As 2010 began, it was not at all clear that big Republican victories were on the way -- only that the GOP was at its lowest point in a long, long time. Roundly defeated in 2008, House Republicans were powerless to stop a huge Democratic majority from passing the national healthcare bill in November 2009. Then, in late December of that year, Senate Republicans were just as powerless to stop a filibuster-proof majority of 60 Democrats from pushing that far-reaching and deeply unpopular piece of legislation through the Senate. With the passage of Obamacare, GOP lawmakers ...
U.S. Propaganda Ministers Pumping Out Jobs Recovery Propaganda Post Date: 2011-01-04 09:08:52 by Capitalist Eric

The storyline being sold to the American public by the White House and the corporate mainstream media is that the economy is growing, jobs are being created, corporations are generating record profits, consumers are spending and all will be well in 2011. The 2% payroll tax cut, stolen from future generations to be spent in 2011, will jumpstart a sound economic recovery. Joseph Goebbels would be proud. PROPAGANDA MINISTERS It was another wise old man named Ben Franklin who captured the essence of what those in control are peddling: Half a truth is often a great lie. The economy is growing due to unprecedented deficit spending by the government, fraudulent accounting by the ...
Navy Capt. Relieved Of Duty Over Raunchy Videos; Experts: Capt. Owen Honors' Navy Career Is Over Post Date: 2011-01-04 00:02:26 by Brian S

SAN DIEGO -- A high-ranking Navy officer has been temporarily relieved of duty over raunchy videos that have spread online, according to published reports. The videos have been considered tawdry and unapologetic in nature, and the star of the video was Capt. Owen Honors, then the second-in-command of the Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The video was shot before Honors was promoted to captain. "It's disturbing. It's a mockery of the entire military," said former sailor Joseph Rocha. The videos, made in 2006 and 2007, were broadcast on a closed-circuit TV to about 6,000 sailors as part of the ship's movie nights. The scenes include simulated sex acts, sexually ...

When the 3C passenger rail line pushed by Gov. Ted Strickland was derailed, supporters say the estimated 16,700 jobs and $3 billion in potential investments went off track as well. Developers said they are not likely to build projects in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati now that the $400 million in federal funding has been given to other states. The federal money was redirected after Gov.-elect John Kasich called the rail plan a publicly funded boondoggle and rejected it. Wisconsin's new governor also rejected a similar plan in that state, returning $800 million, which was then sent to other states. When the rail line was on track, Cleveland developer Forest City Enterprises ...
Pentagon Unsure Whether Fire in the Sky was a Missile or Airplane Post Date: 2011-01-03 19:26:52 by Brian S

Amid speculation that the light show Californians saw back in November 2010 was in fact a missile fired from a Chinese submarine 35 miles off the California coast of Los Angeles, spokesmen for the Navy, Air Force, the Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command have now all said they were in the dark about what the rocket-like object was. Experts had attempted to unravel the mystery of the missile since it was spotted on Monday evening but the Pentagon had kept unusually tight lipped over the incident. Thomas G. McInerney, a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant General, jumped into the fray, stating that the object was clearly a missile. On Fox ...
There's One Huge State Budget Crisis That Everyone Is Refusing To Talk About (Texas) Post Date: 2011-01-03 16:47:40 by Brian S

You know the story and you know the names: states like Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and California are supposed to be in huge financial trouble thanks to bloated governments, business-unfriendly regulations, and strong public sector unions. After a crisis-free 2010, investors are expected to punish these hotbeds of bad governance in a muni bond market rout, at least if pundits like Meredith Whitney are correct. But there's one state, which is fairly high up on the list of troubled states that nobody is talking about, and there's a reason for it. The state is Texas. This month the state's part-time ...

The effects of the disaster that poured millions and millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico last spring will have global ramifications, a Gulf Coast activist recently warned. "What's been done in the Gulf is going to eventually affect every single American citizen," Kindra Arnesen told Project Gulf Impact in a recent interview. She continued, "This is still going to go global because as the economy and the United States goes under the sledgehammer... the rest of the world is going to feel it." "This isn't just about the United States. This isn't just about the Gulf Coast. This is about a whole planet because one hand washes the other," ...

Navy probes lewd videos shown on deployed carrier NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A former Top Gun pilot told his aircraft carrier crew that he had heard complaints about his past homemade videos, but went on to broadcast one aboard the ship that included gay slurs, mimicked masturbation and opened a shower curtain on women pretending to bathe together. The Navy said Sunday it will investigate the "clearly inappropriate" videos shown through the nuclear-powered ship's closed-circuit television system. The star of the videos, made in 2006 and 2007, is Capt. Owen Honors, who now commands the USS Enterprise but was its executive officer - the second in command - when the videos were made. ...

Toward the close of a five-way debate held Monday at the National Press Club between candidates vying to head the committee for the next two years, moderators Tucker Carlson and Grover Norquist asked the candidates to name their favorite book. Steele named "War and Peace" and then recited what he thought were the opening lines: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." But those lines begin the Charles Dickens classic, "A Tale of Two Cities." Several people in the room called out to correct him. The retired vet stressed that the Marines Toys 4 Tots program was working through the struggling economy to bring holiday cheer to young boys and girls, but also delivered a political punch to the Obama administration which he claimed was trying to destroy the country by imposing socialism:

The body of a decorated veteran who once served as a special assistant to the secretary of the Air Force has been found at a landfill in Delaware. The body of 66-year-old John Wheeler III was dumped out of a garbage truck at the landfill near Wilmington on New Year's Eve. His death was ruled a homicide. Newark, N.J., police are investigating Wheeler's slaying because the garbage truck made pickups from a series of trash bins in Newark before going to the landfill. Police believe Wheeler's body had been placed inside one of the bins and had not been there long when the truck arrived. Someone was unloading a trash truck when they discovered his body and called police. Police ...
Obama Has Nearly Doubled George W. Bush's Golf Rounds Post Date: 2011-01-03 12:30:26 by no gnu taxes

Just days after 9/11, President George W. Bush was filmed golfing. He spoke briefly with the press about Israeli security and ousting terrorists, then infamously said, Now watch this drive. Since then, progressive critics railed on President Bush for his golf habit until he gave up the game for the remainder of his presidency in 2003, saying: I dont want to some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf
And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal. With American forces still in Iraq and Afghanistan, a stalled economy, and a host of other issues, Barack Obama is playing even more golf than the ...
Illinois Has Days to Plug $13 Billion Deficit That Took Years to Produce Post Date: 2011-01-03 12:08:05 by Brian S

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Illinois lawmakers will try this week to accomplish in a few days what they have been unable to do in the past two years -- resolve the states worst financial crisis. The legislative session that begins today will take aim at a budget deficit of at least $13 billion, including a backlog of more than $6 billion in unpaid bills and almost $4 billion in missed payments to underfunded state pensions. The fiscal mess is largely of the lawmakers own making, and failure to address the shortages threatens public schools, local governments and other public services, said Dan Hynes, the states outgoing comptroller. Weve reached a very critical ...
Goolsbee: ‘First Default Caused By Insanity’ If Debt Ceiling Not Raised Post Date: 2011-01-02 13:45:54 by Brian S

President Barack Obama's chief economic adviser warned Sunday that "the impact on the economy would be catastrophic" if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling. "This is not a game," Austan Goolsbee, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said. "You know, the debt ceiling is not something to toy with." The government could default on its obligations if it hits the current $14.3 trillion limit on borrowing. Some Republicans are expected to hold the debt ceiling hostage in exchange for tough spending cuts. "If we hit the debt ceiling, that's essentially defaulting on our obligations, which is totally unprecedented in American ...

LANSING, Mich. Some Michigan bar owners plan to protest the state's 8-month-old smoking ban by allowing partygoers to light up after 9 p.m. Friday. Organizers won't reveal the names of participating bars. "They're not necessarily promoting it, but rather they're not going to prevent people from smoking," said Steve Mace, spokesman for the protest being organized by Bloomfield Hills-based Protect Private Property Rights in Michigan. The ban went into effect May 1. It prohibits smoking in workplaces, public buildings, bars and restaurants. Mace said each bar will handle the protest as it sees fit. Some may simply put out ash trays for the first time since ...

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. The dead were killed at Cincinnati, a hamlet of about 100 about three miles from the Oklahoma border. Washington County sheriff's dispatcher Josh Howerton said the storm touched down near the center of the community. He said "lots of injuries" were reported, and officials in nearby Benton County said the storm injured two people and damaged five homes there.
