TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A spokeswoman for the Dole Institute of Politics in Lawrence says former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole has been readmitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dole Institute spokeswoman Heather Anderson tells The Associated Press that Dole was admitted to the hospital Thursday. She said she had no additional details, and several messages left with Walter Reed staff weren't immediately returned Friday. The 87-year-old Russell native spent 10 months at Walter Reed last year after suffering pneumonia three times following knee surgery in February. He left the facility in mid-November. Dole was first elected to the U.S. House in 1960 and to the Senate in ...
The United States Stuck in 2011 Catch 22 Post Date: 2011-01-07 19:31:27 by Capitalist Eric

As I began to think about what might happen in 2011, the classic Joseph Heller novel Catch 22 kept entering my mind. Am I sane for thinking such a thing, or am I so insane that asking this question proves that I'm too rational to even think such a thing? In the novel, the Catch 22 is that anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy. Hence, pilots who request a fitness evaluation are sane, and therefore must fly in combat. At the same time, if an evaluation is not requested by the pilot, he will never receive one (i.e. they can never be found insane), meaning he must also fly in combat. Therefore, Catch-22 ensures that no pilot ...

The Army's top general said recently that a policy banning women from combat arms units could soon be revised. "We're looking at revising the policy," Gen. George W. Casey Jr. told a breakfast gathering of the Association of the U.S. Army in Arlington, Va. "We've had some work going on for a while, and that'll double back up to the secretary, I would think, in the next couple of months." "When I get the recommendations back from the team [studying it], I'll take a look at it, but right now I wouldn't want to venture a guess and put my successor in a box," Gen. Casey said, according to Military.com. If the Army actually did overturn the ...
BREAKING: CBO Says Repealing ObamaCare Would Reduce Net Spending by $540 Billion Post Date: 2011-01-07 15:45:11 by no gnu taxes

The Congressional Budget Office, in an email to Capitol Hill staffers obtained by the Spectator, has said that repealing the national health care law would reduce net spending by $540 billion in the ten year period from 2012 through 2021. That number represents the cost of the new provisions, minus Medicare cuts. Repealing the bill would also eliminate $770 billion in taxes. It's the tax hikes in the health care law (along with the Medicare cuts) which accounts for the $230 billion in deficit reduction.

(01-07) 07:07 PST DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's plan to rid the city of 3,000 blighted and dangerous houses in one year is on pace to do just that. City officials tell The Associated Press that they're about 1,150 demolitions shy of the goal, but should reach it over the next few months. About 1,850 houses have been leveled since last April. Bing wants 10,000 vacant and abandoned houses torn down by the time his four-year term ends in December 2013. He tells the AP that the city is "committed to removing these dangerous eyesores from our neighborhoods." Detroit has a budget deficit of at least $85 million and is relying on upward of $25 million in federal ...
‘False Positives’ Suggest Police Exploit Canines To Justify Searches Post Date: 2011-01-07 12:03:11 by Brian S

Ex-cop: Police 'using dogs to trample our rights as citizens' A study of "false positives" involving drug-sniffing police dogs suggests some police forces may be using canines to do an end-run around constitutional protections against search and seizure, and may be profiling racial minorities in the process. A survey of primarily suburban police departments in Illinois, carried out by the Chicago Tribune, found that 56 percent of all police searches triggered by a drug-sniffing dog turned nothing up. But, perhaps tellingly, that number jumped to 73 percent when the search involved a Latino subject -- meaning that nearly three-quarters of all dog alerts on Latinos turned up ...
Republicans Promising Cuts Deliver Policies That Would Raise U.S. Deficits Post Date: 2011-01-07 11:57:57 by Brian S

Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. House Republicans, who swept into power promising to rein in the federal deficit, have proposed policies in their first week that would make the shortfall worse. Moves to repeal President Barack Obamas health-care law and promises to extend Bush-era tax cuts and offer other breaks would add more than $1 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years, based on reports from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation. In one of their first votes, Republicans changed anti- deficit rules to allow for tax cuts that arent paid for by savings elsewhere in the budget. New spending would have to be offset with cuts ...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The U.S. economy added 103,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 9.4% -- its lowest level since May 2009, the Labor Department reported Friday. Businesses were hiring, adding 113,000 jobs to payrolls in the month. But the government continued to shed staff, cutting 10,000 workers from payrolls. But the two previous months were better than originally thought. November was revised up to 71,000, while October was revised to 210,000, adding a combined 70,000 jobs to the 2010 total. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney had forecast 150,000 jobs added during December, and 100,000 for November's revision. Many economists boosted their ...

By JONATHAN ALLEN | 1/6/11 4:05 PM EST Updated: 1/6/11 5:29 PM EST Two Republicans, including a member of the GOP leadership, voted on the House floor several times despite not having been sworn in, throwing the House into parliamentary turmoil Thursday the same day the Constitution was read aloud on the floor. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, and Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) missed the mass swearing-in ceremony on the House floor Wednesday but proceeded to cast a series of votes. Sessions, appointed to the Rules Committee, participated in some committee activities, and that panel was forced, at the suggestion of House ...

PHOENIX - A second person denied transplant coverage by Arizona under a state budget cut has died, with this death "most likely" resulting from the coverage reduction, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday. University Medical Center spokeswoman Jo Marie Gellerman said the patient died Dec. 28 at another medical facility after earlier being removed from UMC's list for a liver transplant needed because of hepatitis C. Gellerman cited medical privacy requirements in declining to release any information about the patient. Arizona reduced Medicaid coverage for transplants on Oct. 1 under cuts included to help close a shortfall in the state budget enacted last spring. Officials ...

he primary weapon liberals have used to push back against Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare is to suggest that Obamacare reduces the national debt, and thus repealing Obamacare will increase the national debt and make hypocrites out of Republicans who have promised to be fiscally responsible. Boehner challenges new CBO estimate that repealing Obamacare will raise deficit Post Date: 2011-01-06 13:08:38 by no gnu taxes

The Congressional Budget Office has just sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner saying that repealing Obamacare would "probably increase federal budget deficits over the 2012-2019 period by a total of roughly $145 billion." The CBO's reasoning is basically this: If Obamacare is repealed, the government will not collect X in taxes, as provided for in the national health care law, and it will not cut Y in Medicare spending, as the law instructs, but it will also not spend a little less than the total of X plus Y on expanded health coverage. Therefore, repeal would increase the deficit. Republicans aren't buying it. I just asked Boehner spokesman Michael Steel for a ...

Washington (CNN) -- Legislation being pushed by House Republicans to repeal President Barack Obama's health care overhaul will add $230 billion to the federal debt by 2021, according to an analysis released Thursday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Democrats immediately pounced on the report, arguing, among other things, that it undermines the new GOP House majority's emphasis on fiscal responsibility. "Not only would repeal of health care reform add to our deficit, it would dump more than 30 million Americans from coverage who will be protected by our new health care reform act," said Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Illinois. "So more than 50 million ...
GOP bends its own new House rules Post Date: 2011-01-06 11:27:27 by go65

Just hours after taking control of the House, Republicans passed a sweeping set of rules promising transparency and reform. But the new majority is already showing these promises arent exactly set in stone. After calling for bills to go through a regular committee process, the bill that would repeal the health care law will not go through a single committee. Despite promising a more open amendment process for bills, amendments for the health care repeal will be all but shut down. After calling for a strict committee attendance list to be posted online, Republicans backpedaled and ditched that from the rules. They promised constitutional citations for every bill but have yet to add ...

When the 112th Congress convenes Jan. 5, 2011, there will be a new tax proposal on the table in the House. House Resolution 25, with the support of five congressmen, will be introduced for legislation. The bill is titled the Fair Tax Act and would abolish the IRS and have a national sales tax for everyone in the United States. Not only have some elder statesmen endorsed the idea, but new members of Congress are also on board, including Georgia's Rob Woodall and Missouri's Billy Long, both Republicans. If enacted, the new law would be the first major overhaul of the tax structure since the creation of an income tax. Steve King of Iowa has a nice video explaining how a "fair ...
Ex-Bush Advisor Found In Landfill Linked To Attempted Arson, Police Say Post Date: 2011-01-05 19:32:32 by Brian S

A former Bush aide whose body was found at a Delaware landfill was acting erratic before his death, and may have been involved in a plot to burn down his neighbor's house, published reports suggested Wednesday. Police sources told The Philadelphia Enquirer that they had found evidence linking John Parsons Wheeler III to incendiary devices at the home of a neighbor with whom he had a disagreement. "The source emphasized that the evidence does not shed light on the murder itself, but it has helped detectives understand Wheeler's state of mind before he disappeared," the Enquirer reported. Wheeler, 66, was found dead in Cherry Grove landfill on Dec. 31. Police have been ...

50 Million Taxpayers Must Delay Filing - IRS Post Date: 2011-01-05 15:49:03 by Brian S

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Itemize your tax deductions? Itching for a refund? You're going to have to wait. The IRS said that it needs until mid- to late-February to reprogram its processing systems because Congress acted so late this year cleaning up the tax code. The bill, which includes deductions for state and local sales taxes, college tuition and teacher expenses, wasn't signed into law until Dec. 17. The bill ensured that the federal income tax rates would not change, and itemized deductions will continue to be allowed in full for high-income taxpayers. As a result, the 50 million taxpayers who itemize their deductions will have to hold off for a bit before they file. Of ...

WASHINGTON (AP) The number of poor people in the U.S. is millions higher than previously known, with 1 in 6 Americans many of them 65 and older struggling in poverty due to rising medical care and other costs, according to preliminary census figures released Wednesday. At the same time, government aid programs such as tax credits and food stamps kept many people out of poverty, helping to ensure the poverty rate did not balloon even higher during the recession in 2009, President Barack Obama's first year in office. Under a new revised census formula, overall poverty in 2009 stood at 15.7 percent, or 47.8 million people. That's compared to the official 2009 ...

Reporting from Cambridge, Mass. According to the conventional wisdom that liberals accept climate change and conservatives don't, Kerry Emanuel is an oxymoron. Emanuel sees himself as a conservative. He believes marriage is between a man and a woman. He backs a strong military. He almost always votes Republican and admires Ronald Reagan. Emanuel is also a highly regarded professor of atmospheric science at MIT. And based on his work on hurricanes and the research of his peers, Emanuel has concluded that the scientific data show a powerful link between greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. "There was never a light-bulb moment but a gradual realization based on the ...
