Public Support For Health Care Repeal Plummets: AP Poll Post Date: 2011-01-17 11:42:54 by Brian S

Public support for repealing last year's sweeping health care reform law has fallen dramatically in the aftermath of a shooting rampage in Arizona that critically injured a Democratic congresswoman. Only one in four Americans said they support full repeal of the reforms, according to a newly-released Associated Press-GfK poll, and 30 percent strongly opposed the law, the lowest figure since September 2009. The drop is particularly notable among Republicans. Forty-nine percent said they're against the law, down considerably from 61 percent after the elections. A survey by Gallup found that on Jan. 7, one day before the shootings, Americans supported repeal by a margin of 46 to 40 ...
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Condition Improves To 'Serious' Post Date: 2011-01-16 19:19:38 by Brian S

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' condition improved to serious on Sunday after procedures to remove a ventilator were successful. Doctors decided to upgrade her from critical because the tracheotomy done a day earlier went well, and Giffords was breathing on her own, hospital spokeswoman Katie Riley said. Giffords was one of 19 people shot at a Safeway store Jan. 8. Six people were killed. Meanwhile, a week after the Tucson supermarket massacre, a shooting victim became distraught during a televised town hall meeting and was arrested, authorities said. James Eric Fuller, a self-described liberal and military veteran, started ranting at the end of the program. He took a ...

In the New York Times story today that details information on the Stuxnet computer worm that ended up destroying 984 Iranian unranium centrifuges, an interesting item pops out. Not immediately, not in the New York Times. But about half way through the story we find out that President Bush got the Stuxnet started in 2008 with Israel. He even managed to get the cooperation of Germany, Britain and the Saudis. Not bad for someone the world supposedly hated. Then, near the end of the piece, we find out that we got a lot of material from Libya after it gave up its nuclear program in late 2003. Who was president then? And, a shipment of their machines was sent to our own Oak Ridge ...

Cato, Reason, and other libertarian groups are completely ignoring the Threat of Radical Islam. Foreign Policy analysts Dr. Clifford May opines over at National Review: The War Against the Christians The most important story not being told Jan. 13: He writes: Imagine if Muslims in Europe were being arrested for nothing more than peacefully practicing their religion. Imagine if Muslims in South America were being sentenced to death for insulting Jesus. Imagine if mosques were being bombed and burned by terrorists in a growing list of Christian-majority countries. Now heres what you dont need to imagine because it is all too real: In recent days, ...

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana, Jan 14, 2011 (IPS) - In an emotionally charged meeting this week sponsored by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, fishermen, Gulf residents and community leaders vented their increasingly grave concerns about the widespread health issues brought on by the three-month-long disaster. "Today I'm talking to you about my life," Cherri Foytlin told the two commissioners present at the Jan. 12 meeting. "My ethylbenzene levels are 2.5 times the 95th percentile, and there's a very good chance now that I won't get to see my grandbabies
What I'm asking you to do now, if possible, is to amend [your report]. Because ...
Gabrielle Giffords No Longer Needs Ventilator Post Date: 2011-01-15 20:11:26 by Brian S

Gabrielle Giffords, the Arizona congresswoman who was seriously injured in last week's shooting in Tucson, no longer needs a ventilator after doctors replaced her breathing tube with a different one. Hospital officials said Giffords underwent a procedure this morning to have a tracheotomy tube inserted in her windpipe to protect her airways, freeing her from the ventilator. She had been breathing on her own since she was shot, but doctors had left the tube in as a precaution. Doctors also inserted a feeding tube to provide nutrition. These procedures are not out of the ordinary for patients with brain injuries. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, was last week given two charges of murder and ...

(01-15) 16:41 PST Tucson, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say one of the victims of the shooting rampage in Tucson has been arrested after he threatened a tea party leader during a town hall meeting for a television show. James Eric Fuller, who was shot in the knee and the back, objected to something Trent Humphries said during the forum Saturday. Authorities say the 63-year-old Fuller took a picture of Humphries and yelled "you're dead." Pima County sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan says Fuller has been arrested on disorderly conduct and threat charges. Ogan says while Fuller was being escorted out, deputies decided he needed a mental health evaluation and he was taken to a ...

WASHINGTON -- Joan Snyder Holmes has been dead for nearly four years. But during the past two years, she's managed to make thousands of dollars in donations to one of the country's premier Tea Party organizations. Those donations, uncovered by the Center for Responsive Politics in a report released Friday, gives an alternate, more cryptic meaning to the term grassroots. According to the money-in-politics investigative organization, Tea Party Express' PAC reported receiving three donations from Holmes in autumn 2009 for a total of $2,500. An additional lump-sum donation of $5,000 was made in September of that year. Had Holmes not died of cancer on Feb. 1, 2007 -- she was ...

Union leaders plan to launch a multimillion dollar campaign to boost the image of government workers and fend off pay cuts and benefit rollbacks in states under fiscal siege. The scope of the effort is unusual in a non-election year, and it signals a growing concern that unions could lose significant clout in states where the political climate has changed with Republicans in ...

Its like, if you dont follow Obama and believe in Obamas policies, then you are a potential terrorist. In talking about The New York Times, often seen as queen of the left by conservatives, Durgin added, Somebody ought to burn that paper down. WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration officially has ended a high-tech southern border fence boondoggle that cost taxpayers about $1 billion. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says proven technology will be used in the future. She says technology will be tailored to local terrain and population density. Napolitano said Friday there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution to the country's border security needs. Congress ordered the high-tech fence in 2006 amid a clamor for more border security. The project yielded only 53 miles of protection.

The Sao Paulo Art Biennial may be renowned for celebrating the best of Brazil's avant garde, but international critics say one of this year's featured exhibits -- a series of charcoal sketches depicting the imagined assassinations of former U.S. President George W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth II, among other world leaders -- has gone too far. (Scroll down for photos) One sketch in the controversial series, titled "Enemies," depicts Bush kneeling on the ground while artist Gil Vicente presses a pistol to the former president's temple. In other sketches, the Queen is apparently unaware of the artist pointing a gun directly at her back, while Pope Benedict XVI faces ...

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The organization planning to build an Islamic community centre near the World Trade Center said the imam who has been the public face of the project, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, will be playing a reduced role in the facility. The non-profit group Park51 announced Friday that it had named a new imam to help lead religious programing so that Rauf could focus on other initiatives. Rauf announced late last year that he would be starting a global movement that would fight extremism and promote better relations between people of different faiths and cultures. He is set to start a national speaking tour Saturday in Detroit. Rauf will remain on the Islamic centre's board, Park51 ...
Mark DeMoss Disbands 'Civility Project,' Citing Conservative Attacks, Grim View On Discourse Post Date: 2011-01-13 21:43:06 by Skip Intro

Mark DeMoss, director of the Civility Project, a two-year-old effort launched at the beginning of the Obama presidency to prompt legislators across the nation to cool political rhetoric, decided to shut the campaign down earlier this month -- even before the latest resurgence of debate about "vitriol" and rhetoric sparked by the events in Arizona over the weekend. DeMoss, an evangelical conservative with ties to some big-name Republicans, cited a general lack of interest, as well as pervading signs that the nature of political discourse appeared only to be deteriorating during Obama's first two years as president, as justifications for halting his program. In a recent ...

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole has been released from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington for the second time in less than a week. Dole said in a statement Thursday that he feels "a whole lot better" after being treated for a minor infection. He said he plans to return to work Friday. The former U.S. senator first left the hospital Jan. 7 but returned that same night after a recurrence of a fever. The 87-year-old Dole spent 10 months at Walter Reed last year after suffering pneumonia following knee surgery. He left the facility in mid-November. WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a moderate Republican who has easily kept her Texas seat for nearly two decades even as the state grew more conservative, announced Thursday she would retire next year at the end of her term. Hutchison, a former television reporter and University of Texas cheerleader, said in a letter to supporters that she would not seek re-election in 2012. She made similar statements when toying with whether to return to Texas to run for governor, but Gov. Rick Perry's surprisingly decisive victory against her in last year's GOP primary ended her state office ambitions, at least for now. The senator, now 67 with two young adopted daughters, ...

MIAMI (AP) -- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told a Republican gathering Thursday evening that the time is now to connect better with Latino voters, not two months before the general election. Bush is co-chairing a conference Friday of the new Hispanic Action Network, part of the GOP's latest efforts to forge ties with the growing number of Latino voters. The conference will focus on trade, immigration, media outreach and education. "Typically what happens in politics is you're working hard and you say, 'Oh gosh, we better start working at campaigning in the Hispanic community,' and it's like Sept. 15," he told the crowd at the elegant Biltmore Hotel in the ...
