Manchelle's 'Get Moving' Program Linked to Pedestrian Deaths Post Date: 2011-01-20 11:19:58 by Happy Quanzaa

WASHINGTON -- The Governors Highway Safety Association says pedestrian deaths increased in the first half of 2010 and the First Lady's program to get Americans to be more active could be partly responsible. Governors Highway Safety Administration spokesman Jonathan Adkins told 630 WMAL that Michelle Obama is "trying to get us to walk to work and exercise a little bit more. While that's good, it also increases our exposure to risk." After four straight years of steady declines, pedestrian deaths were up during the first six months of 2010, the latest figures available to be studied. Other factors include distracted drivers, distracted pedestrians and what Adkins calls ...
Arlington Man Loses Gun License Due To Blog About Tucson Shooting Post Date: 2011-01-19 18:50:24 by Brian S

ARLINGTON (CBS) A blog threatening members of Congress in the wake of the Tucson, Arizona shooting has prompted Arlington police to temporarily suspend the firearms license of an Arlington man. It was the headline 1 down and 534 to go that caught the attention. One refers to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in the rampage, while 534 refers to the other members of the U.S. House and Senate. Police are investigating the suitability of 39-year-old Travis Corcoran to have a firearms license We certainly take this as a credible threat, and credible until we prove otherwise, said Arlington police Captain Robert ...
A ‘Budget-Busting’ Law? Republicans and Democrats both misrepresent the fiscal effect of the health care law. Post Date: 2011-01-19 16:27:49 by go65

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office states that repealing the health care law would worsen the federal deficit over the next 10 years by $230 billion. So how does the House Republican Leadership support its claim that the law itself is "budget-busting" and would add $701 billion to the deficit? And how does Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi justify claiming it will "save taxpayers $1.3 trillion"? Both sides are spinning shamelessly. We judge that CBOs projection, which is both official and nonpartisan, is the best available. But even that estimate is uncertain, as the agency itself concedes. For one thing, there is doubt about whether all of the ...
Voters Now Trust GOP More On All 10 Key Issues Post Date: 2011-01-19 13:48:50 by no gnu taxes

Republicans officially assumed control of the U.S. House of Representatives this month, and voters now trust the GOP more than Democrats on all 10 of the most important issues regularly surveyed by Rasmussen Reports including the economy, health care, taxes and national security. The last time voters trusted Republicans more on all 10 issues was late August. But this shows a sharp contrast from two years ago when Democrats were trusted more than Republicans on most issues. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Republicans were trusted more on seven out of 10 issues in December and eight out of 10 in October just before Election Day. Republicans also have held double-digit leads ...
Scientists Explain How Obama’s Uncertainty is Destroying the Economy Post Date: 2011-01-19 13:37:23 by no gnu taxes

Boy, is uncertainty making us uncertain. Jonah Lehrer, a specialist in psychology and neuroscience, explains why in a recent Wall Street Journal article. Lehrer cites an experiment in which subjects were asked how much they would offer to pay for either a $50 bookstore gift certificate or one valued at $100. They offered an average of $26.10 and $50, respectively. Then uncertainty was added to the mix. The subjects were told to bid on a lottery in which they were guaranteed to win either the $50 or $100 certificate. Youd think theyd offer at least $26.10 after all, the worst they would do is win the $50 certificate but they were barely willing to cough up an ...
Report: Giffords May Leave Hospital On Friday Post Date: 2011-01-19 13:24:44 by Brian S

TUCSON, Arizona The mother of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has told friends and family that her daughter could be released from hospital as soon as Friday, according to The New York Times. In an email, Gloria Giffords also said that the congresswoman has started to look at get-well cards and scrolled through photos on her husband's iPhone. "Everyday Gabby improves and shows higher levels of comprehension and complex actions," the newspaper quoted a message sent Tuesday morning as saying. Giffords' husband Mark Kelly said Tuesday that the congresswoman isn't aware that six people died in the Jan. 8 rampage in Tucson , including Gabe Zimmerman, one of her ...
Austerity In America: 22 Signs That It Is Already Here And That It Is Going To Be Very Painful Post Date: 2011-01-19 12:38:37 by Capitalist Eric

Over the past couple of years, most Americans have shown little concern as austerity measures were imposed on financially troubled nations across Europe. Even as austerity riots erupted in nations such as Greece and Spain, most Americans were still convinced that nothing like that could ever happen here. Well, guess what? Austerity has arrived in America. At this point, it is not a formal, mandated austerity like we have seen in Europe, but the results are just the same. Taxes are going up, services are being slashed dramatically, thousands of state and city employees are being laid off, and politicians seem to be endlessly talking about ways to make even deeper budget cuts. ...
It's time to grade parents, new bill proposes [go56, Lucy's Mom= Automatic F] Post Date: 2011-01-19 12:21:31 by Capitalist Eric

Every year, Florida's students, schools and districts are graded based on their performance. Now, it's time to start rating parents, a state lawmaker says. State Rep. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, filed a bill Tuesday that would require elementary school teachers to evaluate parents based on "the quality" of their involvement in their children's schools. Parents with children in pre-K-to-third-grade would get "satisfactory," "needs improvement" or "unsatisfactory" ratings in four broad categories. FBI: Bomb Placed At MLK Day Parade Was ‘Domestic Terrorism’ Post Date: 2011-01-19 11:49:12 by Brian S

A bomb left in a backpack on the route of a Martin Luther King Day parade in Spokane, Washington, has been described as being in the "realm of domestic terrorism" by the FBI. The bomb was found on bench Monday morning at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in the city's downtown core. Spokane police were alerted to its presence before the parade -- which was attended by some 1,000 people -- got underway. The parade was rerouted away from the site. A robot and a hazmat unit were used to defuse the device. The FBI would not say how the bomb was made, or whether it was connected to a triggering device of any kind, but the bureau said the bomb was ...
Cheney’s Artificial Heart Made Possible by Taxpayer-Funded R&D Post Date: 2011-01-19 10:39:37 by go65

Last July former Vice President Dick Cheney had a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) put into his chest to assist his failing heart. Cheney is now resuming his public life in politics. News reports note that he is more than willing to talk about his new life-saving implant. It is not so clear that he fully understands what he needs to say about it. There is a lot to talk about regarding LVADs. As Cheney resumes his active role in GOP politics, is he aware that the only reason he is alive is as a result of taxpayer-supported government research at the National Institutes of Health? He might want to mention that the private sector did not do the basic research that led to the invention of ...
[SC Gov] Haley Approves Huge Salary Increases Post Date: 2011-01-19 09:36:30 by go65

So much for limited government
With her state facing an estimated $1 billion budget shortfall, S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley handed out huge salary increases to top gubernatorial staffers on her first full day in office. She also doled out big salaries to newly-created positions within the governors office. Paying attention, Tea Partiers? Haley started things off by giving her new chief of staff, Tim Pearson, a 27.5 percent pay raise. Pearson will make $125,000 a year or $27,000 more than Scott English made while serving as chief of staff to former Gov. Mark Sanford. Pearson will also have a full-time assistant who makes $60,000 a year. Haleys deputy chief of staff ...

I finished Part 1 last week informing you that in just a single year, from 2008-09, Planned Parenthood received $363.2 million in government grants and contracts, a $13.6 million increase from the previous year, which resulted in 324,800 abortions. I then left you to ponder this question, which Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, asked more than a year ago: "Why should people of conscience be forced to participate in any aspect of abortion?" That is exactly where Washington is leading us unless this 112th Congress detours from forcing pro-life citizens to pay for abortions via Obamacare or the passing of some legislation like the Freedom of Choice Act. Thank God the pro-life cavalry has ...

Washington (CNN) - After a difficult and controversial two-week stretch for Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor's favorable rating has dipped to its lowest level since she joined the 2008 Republican presidential ticket and became a household name. According to the new USA TODAY/Gallup survey, Palin's favorability rating has dipped to 38 percent while her unfavorable now stands at 53 percent. Gallup reports the 38 percent is a new low when it comes to the percentage of Americans who give the former Alaska governor a thumbs up. The 53 percent who dislike Palin is also a new high in Gallup polling. A similar poll in July found 44 percent of Americans viewed her favorably while 47 ...
FACT CHECK: Shaky health care job loss estimate Post Date: 2011-01-18 13:28:02 by go65

WASHINGTON (AP) Republicans pushing to repeal President Barack Obama's health care overhaul warn that 650,000 jobs will be lost if the law is allowed to stand. But the widely cited estimate by House GOP leaders is shaky. It's the latest creative use of statistics in the health care debate, which has seen plenty of examples from both sides. Republicans are calling their thumbs-down legislation the "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act." Postponed after the mass shootings in Tucson, a House vote on the divisive issue is now expected Wednesday, although Democrats promise they'll block repeal in the Senate. A recent report by House GOP leaders says ...
Health Care Is 'Law Of The Land,' GOP Should Drop Repeal And Build On It Post Date: 2011-01-18 13:15:35 by go65

"It is not the bill that [Republicans] would have written," said the Tennessee Republican. "It is not the bill that I would have drafted. But it is the law of the land and it is the platform, the fundamental platform, upon which all future efforts to make that system better, for that patient, for that family, will be based. And that is a fact. I know the discussion of Washington is repeal and I'm sure we will come back to that discussion..." "[The bill] has many strong elements," Frist added later. "And those elements, whatever happens, need to be preserved, need to be cuddled, need to be snuggled, need to be promoted and need to be implemented. But ...
Experts doubt GOP claim that health care law's a 'job killer' Post Date: 2011-01-18 13:04:11 by go65

WASHINGTON Despite what Republicans say, the 2010 health care law isn't necessarily a job killer. Republicans have titled their effort to overturn the law the "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act," and that's their favorite talking point against it. The House of Representatives will start debate on repeal Tuesday and probably vote Wednesday. Saying that the law is a job killer doesn't necessarily make it one, however, and independent experts say that such a conclusion is at least premature, if not unfounded. "The claim has no justification," said Micah Weinberg, a senior research fellow at the centrist New America Foundation's Health ...
Take CBO Report With a Grain of Salt: Obamacare Repeal Would Not Increase Deficits Post Date: 2011-01-18 12:05:27 by no gnu taxes

Next week, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2, a measure to repeal Obamacare in its entirety. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) today released a report stating that repealing the health care law would increase the deficit by $145 billion between 2012 and 2019. This report is based on the findings of the CBOs March 2010 report that predicted that Obamacare would reduce the deficit. CBO does respectable work, but their analysts have their hands tied by assumptions they are required to make. The reality is that, in spite of the March report, Obamacare will not reduce the deficit, so repealing it would not add to the deficit, in spite of todays report. The CBO ...

The new Congress will start discussing the repeal of ObamaCare today. The media using trumped up polls is trying to convince the country , the GOP and the Tea party that the push for ObamaCare repeal has diminished. Any conservative knows this is not true. I am sick of hearing repeal cant be done because the Dems control the Senate. There are just a handful more Dems than GOP in the Senate, not a vast majority. There are Dems in the Senate who realize ObamaCare is a big mistake and will vote with the GOP.When the repeal passes the Senate, Obama will sign it. If all of Congress passes the ObamaCare repeal Obama will have no choice but to sign it or face banishment for the ...
How to Repeal Obamacare in the Senate Post Date: 2011-01-18 11:51:08 by no gnu taxes

This week the House will pass a bill to repeal Obamacare. Congressional experts will argue that the Senate wont pass a full repeal. They are correct to argue that full repeal will not be passed by both the House and Senate in the next few months, but they may be wrong that a full repeal bill will not pass in this Congress within the next two years. If Senators dont take two procedural steps this week, they will make it virtually impossible to ever get a vote on theHouse-passed full repeal bill this Congress. The House will pass H.R. 2 this week. Once that bill is passed, it will be sent to the Senate for consideration. Once the Senate receives the bill, any Senator can use Rule ...
Gov. Mitch Daniels Explains Obamacare’s Impact on Indiana Post Date: 2011-01-18 11:45:02 by no gnu taxes

As the House of Representatives prepares to vote on repealing Obamacare next week, several governors have emerged as the laws leading critics. Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-IN) is one of them. Theres obviously real sentiment in the country for repealing this bill for the colossal mistake that it was, Daniels said in an exclusive interview with The Heritage Foundation. Daniels sat down with Heritage last year to explain the challenges facing Indiana as a result of Obamacare. Chief among them: the likely demise of the Healthy Indiana Plan, a program that provides health insurance to 50,000 low-income residents of Indiana. That alone could cost the state up to $3.9 ...

As the House prepares to consider the repeal of Obamacare this week, Heritage is showcasing stories about the laws impact on America. Last year we traveled to Dallas to speak with Larry Patterson. As a small business owner and father, he has much to fear about Obamacares consequences to his livelihood and family. Patterson worries the law will make it more expensive to offer insurance for his employees. But hes also concerned about how his family will fare as doctors adapt to the changes. I dont know so much that Im afraid Obamacare would interfere with my doctor and our relationship, as much as I am certain that it will, Patterson told us. ...
Democrats, MSM Desperate to Block ObamaCare Repeal Post Date: 2011-01-18 11:38:24 by no gnu taxes

As the House GOP gears up to vote on ObamaCare repeal, the MSM gets its DNC marching orders and, willy-nilly, produces polls showing that the GOP shouldnt repeal. But, as noted over at NRO, the polls are worthless:
the AP poll, which shows that 40 percent of adults support Obamacare and 41 percent oppose it. In November, the last time the AP polled this question, 38 percent supported Obamacare and 47 percent opposed it. But the sample in November was very different: 38 percent Republican and 39 percent Democrat. The sample in January wasnt so balanced, with 42 percent of the responders Democrat and 36 percent Republican
The Marist poll finds that 35 percent ...
Tick, tick, tick: The cost of Obamacare is a time bomb Post Date: 2011-01-18 11:35:25 by no gnu taxes

In fighting against Obamacare repeal this week, Democrats portray their health care law as a money saver, claiming Republicans would add to the deficit by abolishing the legislation. But in their franker moments, the bill's authors admit that "reform" could be something of a time bomb that will cause exploding health care costs down the line. One top Senate aide plainly stated last summer, "This is a coverage bill, not a cost reduction bill." The time-bomb nature of Obamacare was presaged by Mitt Romney's health care bill in Massachusetts, which also expanded health insurance coverage by mandating that all individuals buy insurance, prohibiting insurers from ...
