See Teachers Unions Rob Dick and Jane Post Date: 2011-02-22 13:03:52 by no gnu taxes

For the kids! teachers union members chanted in Wisconsin while protesting Governor Scott Walkers modest proposal to make public sector union employees contribute 5% toward their pensions and kick in roughly one-tenth of their health care costs. These are benefits most private sector employees would jump at - assuming they still have jobs in Obamas economy. But the Left is hot for teachers unions so they have declared such measures the stuff of authoritarian regimes, with many protest signs comparing Governor Walker to Mubarak or worse, Hitler. Leave it to the misplaced priorities of the Left to make a hero out of John Walker Lindh and a villain out of Scott Walker. ...

Rasmussen Poll on Wisconsin Dispute May Be Biased Post Date: 2011-02-22 10:46:16 by go65

Weve noted before that the automated polling firm Rasmussen Reports has had problems with bias in a statistical sense: in the election last fall, its polls overestimated the standing of Republican candidates by roughly 4 percentage points on average. A somewhat different issue arises today in a poll the firm conducted on the dispute in Wisconsin between Gov. Scott Walker and some of the states public-employee unions. The poll, which included people that Rasmussen deemed to be likely voters from across the country, found that 48 percent of respondents agreed more with Mr. Walker in the dispute, while 38 percent agreed more with the union for teachers and other ...

American Corporatocracy: Wisconsin Style Post Date: 2011-02-22 09:49:45 by Godwinson

American Corporatocracy: Wisconsin Style by Dean Walker February 20, 2011 Originally published in The Daily Censored for Project Censored. This week, in the American corporatocracy, we witnessed Wisconsin Republicans, including their newly minted Governor Scott Walker (no relation to my brother), attempt to bust the unions. To do this, Walker and his Republican allies maliciously manufactured a financial crisis. For decades the lairs on the Right have been scheming to strip workers of their right to collectively bargain with employers. The reason is simple, if youre a proponent of the corporatocracy, the last thing you would want is an empowered work force. In fact, the real ...

JUNEAU, Alaska -- An Alaska state lawmaker is making her way back to the state Capitol after refusing a pat-down search at a Seattle airport, a spokeswoman said. Rep. Sharon Cissna underwent a body scan as she was preparing to leave Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Sunday and was then required to undergo the pat-down by Transportation Safety Administration officials, said Michelle Scannell, her chief of staff. Scannell said the TSA called for the pat-down because the scan showed Cissna had had a mastectomy. The TSA, on its website, says security officers "will need to see and touch your prosthetic device, cast or support brace as part of the screening process." Scannell ...

At one time Nathanson was deeply entrenched in the American pro-abortion movement, having co-founded the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) and overseen 75,000 abortions as director of an abortion clinic. A former judge has been convicted of taking a $1million kickback from the builder of a juvenile jail in the notorious cash for kids scandal. Mark Ciavarella sent hundreds of children and teenagers to the private prison for minor crimes after being given the money by the company which ran it. Why Obama and the Dems Blundered in Wisconsin Post Date: 2011-02-21 14:29:23 by no gnu taxes

It is becoming clear that the Wisconsin battle was a strategic political blunder for President Obama and the Democratic Party. The decision by the Democratic Party and its allies to draw a line in the sand in Wisconsin was the wrong strategy, in the wrong state, at the wrong time, on the wrong issue, and executed in the wrong way. The White House, which for the last two years seemed so tone deaf over health care, jobs, and the economy, may again be displaying a stunning political miscalculation. Unless the Democrats pull the plug on their ill-conceived Wisconsin campaign, the statewide and national backlash now beginning to emerge may continue to resonate all the way to the 2012 ...

Something momentous is happening in the United States right now and Barack Obama doesnt get it. In Madison, Wisconsin last week, up to 40,000 public employees, organised by their unions, the Democratic party and the grassroots Organizing for America group that elected the president in 2008, gathered at the state capitol. Teachers left their classrooms, forcing schools to close. Their objective? To rail against an attempt to balance the budget and curtail union power by newly-elected Governor Scott Walker, a Republican. The Democratic partys response? Its state senators have fled Wisconsin to Illinois, dodging state troopers as they went, in order to prevent the budget being ...

We Stand With Governor Scott Walker Post Date: 2011-02-21 09:54:37 by no gnu taxes

On our side Governor Scott Walker, a newly-elected GOP-controlled legislature and tens of thousands of tea party and AFP activists are working to balance the state budget by finally cutting spending and reining in sweetheart pensions and benefits enjoyed by government employees unions. On the other side are a privileged class of liberal politicians and government unions demanding higher taxes and even more spending for themselves and their ideology - all while private sector unemployment still runs high. It looked and felt like the government workers marches in Athens, Greece throughout the week as the Wisconsin government unions, augmented by union activists from around the nation and ...

Gov. Walker is Right: Wisconsin Union Work Rules are Insane Post Date: 2011-02-21 09:36:33 by no gnu taxes

The tax-paying public needs to read these and GET RID of this. If its this bad in Wisconsin, can you IMAGINE how pedantic and impossible the work rules are in California? ( I have a mental picture of one Caltrans guy digging a ditch, 3 guys watching and some girl holding the traffic sign wearing a hard hat.) Great insight and reportage this week from the MacIver Institute: After spending several days complaining about Governor Walkers proposed compensation changes for state employees (as if a 100 percent match on pension contributions and picking up 87 percent of health insurance premiums were raw deals) the union operatives have shifted gears. Its about rights, ...
Gov. Walker on Wisconsin democrats: “Democracy is not about hiding out in another state” Post Date: 2011-02-20 21:51:19 by no gnu taxes

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, whose state has become the epicenter of the battle between the public sector unions and government, said on Fox News Sunday that his budget is a necessity after years of executives and legislators abdicating from their responsibilities. For us, we have to do this. For decades, we had leaders who pushed off the problem. I dont know if the union members who are protesting outside the state capital realize that either they approve Gov. Walkers budget, which means they have to put in some of their money to their pensions and benefits, or they can look at layoffs of up to 12,000 people. Things can not go on the way they are. ...
Both sides targeting state senators for recall elections (Wisconsin) Post Date: 2011-02-20 21:28:55 by go65

It's been said that state Democrats and labor unions are trying to reverse the results of the November 2010 elections. Actually, it's the outcome of a handful of 2008 races that political liberals and conservatives are now working to undo. Several sources confirmed that Wisconsin Democrats and labor leaders are plotting recall elections for several Republican senators as soon as lawmakers push through Gov. Scott Walker's budget plan to curb collective bargaining rights and require public employees to chip in part of their salary toward their health care and pension costs. "Those are options people are looking at," said Marty Beil, director of the largest state ...
Pro-Walker Troopers Union Repudiates Endorsement In Wisconsin Post Date: 2011-02-20 21:26:15 by go65

Tensions remained high in Wisconsin on Sunday as Gov. Scott Walker (R) remained in a standoff with state public employees unions and Democratic legislators over a proposal that would not only require greater employee contributions to state benefits packages but also strip state employees of most of their collective bargaining and union rights. In one development, one of the unions that did support Walker in the 2010 election, the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association (and would benefit from his plan)-- has released a statement repudiating the union's endorsement. "I specifically regret the endorsement of the Wisconsin Trooper's Association for Gov. Scott Walker," ...

Brian Beutler at TPM said Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker ginned up a budget shortfall. As if on cue, Jamelle Bouie at The American Prospect said Walkers deficit reducing plan was a ginned up crisis. Political fiction writer Steven Benen (thats what his posts are) says Walker is insincere. The Constitutionally confused Ezra Klein claims the Badger State was actually in pretty good shape. It was supposed to end this budget cycle with about $120 million in the bank. All of these truth-challenged individuals are using two pieces of information. One is this report from Wisconsins Legislative Fiscal Bureau, the ...

More than 1 in 5 public school teachers said their children attend private schools. In Washington (28 percent), Baltimore (35 percent) and 16 other major cities, the figure is more than 1 in 4. In some cities, nearly half of the children of public school teachers have abandoned public schools. In Philadelphia, 44 percent of the teachers put their children in private schools; ...
