Down in the pleasure centre, hell bent or heaven sent, listen to the propaganda, listen to the latest slander. Theres nothing underhand that she wouldnt understand. Pump it up until you can feel it. Pump it up when you dont really need it.Elvis Costello - Pump It UpI had been planning an article based on the Green Day song Static Age - about the propaganda, lies and misinformation that are endlessly directed at the American people by the government, the mainstream corporate media, and the wealthy elite that control the levers of our society. Then Barack Obama presented his 2012 Budget proposal, including his 10 year projection for our country. I know youve ...

MADISON, Wis. On a prank call that quickly spread across the Internet, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was duped into discussing his strategy to cripple public employee unions, promising never to give in and joking that he would use a baseball bat in his office to go after political opponents. Walker believed the caller was a conservative billionaire named David Koch, but it was actually a liberal blogger. The two talked for at least 20 minutes a conversation in which the governor described several potential ways to pressure Democrats to return to the Statehouse and revealed that his supporters had considered secretly planting people in pro-union protest crowds to stir up ...

Koch: He's our man, you know. Koch: You're the first domino. Walker: Yep. This is our moment. Koch: Now what else could we do for you down there? Walker: Well the biggest thing would be-and your guy on the ground [Americans For Prosperity president Tim Phillips] is probably seeing this [stuff about all the people protesting]. Koch: [Laughs] Well, I tell you what, Scott: once you crush these bastards I'll fly you out to Cali and really show you a good time. Walker: All right, ...

Oil companies from Chevron Corp. to BP Plc are selling more refineries than at any time in history even as a rebound in demand for gasoline and diesel pushes profits from running the plants to the highest level since 2007. A glut of refineries put up for sale by integrated oil companies after the global recession dragged down profits are now available for 80 percent less than they fetched in 2006, Dahlman Rose & Co.s Sam Margolin says. Meanwhile Tesoro Corp., the subject of more than a dozen takeover rumors since 2007, has the cheapest valuation among U.S. refiners based on projected earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, according to data compiled by ...

Red States Feed at Federal Trough, Blue States Supply the Feed Monday, September 27, 2004 Paul L. Caron The Tax Foundation has released a fascinating report showing which states benefit from federal tax and spending policies, and which states foot the bill. The report shows that of the 32 states (and the District of Columbia) that are "winners" -- receiving more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 76% are Red States that voted for George Bush in 2000. Indeed, 17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States. Here are the Top 10 states that feed at the federal trough (with Red States highlighted in ...

MADISON, Wis. Americans strongly oppose laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. The poll found 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to such a proposal in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law. Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Republican legislators in Wisconsin have proposed cutting union rights for most state government workers and making them pay more for benefits. Ohio, New Jersey, Indiana, Iowa and other states with Republican governors are considering similar laws. Thousands gathered in Madison for an eighth day to protest Walker's plan. Rallies were also held in ...
Democrats, Republicans in Standoff on Spending as Shutdown Looms Post Date: 2011-02-23 11:15:49 by Brian S

Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Congressional Republicans and Democrats are preparing dueling plans to avert a U.S. government shutdown early next month as both sides refuse to budge so far in their standoff over spending cuts. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said he will bring up a temporary spending measure next week to keep the government operating at current levels into early April and buy time for talks on a longer-term plan. Democrats oppose the House Republicans spending plan, passed Feb. 19, saying its $61 billion in cuts will harm the economy and the nations security. The White House says President Barack Obama would veto the measure, which would fund the ...
Poll Shows Wisconsin and Indiana Union Protests Could Spell Trouble for Democrats Post Date: 2011-02-23 07:19:18 by no gnu taxes

The Reverend Jesse Jackson was firing up a crowd of Wisconsin union protesters last Saturday. "If we can find the money to bail out wealthy businessmen, we can bail out Madison, Wisconsin!" Jackson's battle cry for transferring billions of taxpayer dollars into union coffers is the next big fear for fiscally responsible legislators and voters alike. And many believe that if the unions prevail in Wisconsin, massive bailouts for state public employees unions won't be far behind. The notion of such bailouts is strongly opposed by voters nationwide, according to a recent Zogby International poll of 10,000 likely voters. The poll, which was commissioned by The O'Leary ...
Even FDR Was Wary of Public Employee Unions Post Date: 2011-02-23 00:37:58 by A K A Stone

This article by Rich Lowry and this piece in the Wall Street Journal both alluded to Franklin Roosevelt's wariness towards public employee unions. I was surprised. So I dug around and found one source that supports this claim. In a letter to a public employee union, Roosevelt explains that, yes, they do have a right to organize, but there are some restrictions: All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative ...
OUTRAGEOUS: Google Collects Kids Social Security Numbers Post Date: 2011-02-22 23:59:49 by A K A Stone

"Doodle-4-Google" is so much more than an art contest. Sure, the game, which received 33,000 entries last year, celebrates "the creativity of young people" by having them send in a drawing under the theme "What Id like to do someday
" But, there's another component, as well. It also helps Google collect some very personal data on students K through 12. Along with the submission, the contest's initial Parent Consent Form asked for the child's city of birth (not current city, mind you), date of birth, the last four digits of the child's social security number, as well as complete contact info for the parents. Bob Bowdon, who directed ...
GOP Governors Get Millions More In Obama Health Care Grants Post Date: 2011-02-22 22:22:47 by go65

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration on Tuesday issued more than $45 million in new grants to various states for the implementation of the president's health care law -- some of which went to governors hostile both to the White House and the law itself. The Department of Health and Human Services issued the grants as part of the Money Follows the Person program, a component of the Affordable Care Act that encourages states to transition individuals from nursing homes or a separate institution into community-based programs. The program is relatively non-political, as grants were awarded to states starting under the second Bush administration. But because its re-authorization is part ...

Seats on one side of the Indiana House were nearly empty today as House Democrats departed the the state rather than vote on anti-union legislation. A source tells The Indianapolis Star that Democrats are headed to Illinois, though it was possible some also might go to Kentucky. They need to go to a state with a Democratic governor to avoid being taken into police custody and returned to Indiana. The House came into session twice this morning, with only three of the 40 Democrats present. Those were needed to make a motion, and a seconding motion, for any procedural steps Democrats would want to take to ensure Republicans dont do anything official without quorum. With only 58 ...

Tracking Voter Sentiment in Wisconsin Majorities Oppose Governor Scott Walker’s Anti-Worker and Union Agenda Post Date: 2011-02-22 16:07:31 by Skip Intro

Voters in Wisconsin strongly agree with the working families at the state capitol and oppose Governor Scott Walkers anti-worker agenda. Moreover, since the protests began, Governor Walker has seen real erosion in his standing, with a majority expressing disapproval of his job performance and disagreement with his agenda. Strong majorities disagree with eliminating collective bargaining for public employees and believe that if workers agree to concessions on pensions and healthcare benefits that the Governor should drop his plan to eliminate collective bargaining. Walkers Standing is Poor, while Most Agree with the Unions and Public Employees Overall, a majority (51 percent) of ...

Two areas of state law one for state workers (Chapter 111 of the Wisconsin Statutes) and one for local government and public school employees (Section 111.70 of the Wisconsin Statutes) give public employees the ability in Wisconsin to collectively bargain. The law issues a mandate to both the employer (the government, through its taxpayers) and the collective bargaining group (employees represented by a union). The two sides must meet and confer at reasonable times, in good faith, with the intention of reaching an agreement on wages, hours, fringe benefits, and conditions of employment. In other words, public employees, unlike the rest of the planet, are given ...
As the Wisconisn Union Circus Becomes a Crippling Liability for Democrats, the Kenyan Usurper Can't Distance Himself Fast Enough Post Date: 2011-02-22 14:52:29 by no gnu taxes

In a good indication that the Wisconsin protests have become a liability for Democrats, the White House and the DNC have clumsily attempted to distance themselves from the event in the New York Times: Administration officials said Sunday that the White House had done nothing to encourage the demonstrations in Wisconsin nor was it doing so in Ohio, Florida and other states where new Republican governors are trying to make deep cuts to balance their budget.
And, officials and union leaders said, reports of the involvement of the Democratic National Committee specifically Organizing for America, the grass-roots network born of Mr. Obamas 2008 campaign were ...

new memoir from an embittered former aide to Sarah Palin includes a trove of emails that vividly illustrate her intense focus on image and depiction in the media. The emails, apparently from the former Alaska governor, portray Palin as nearly obsessed with her political adversaries and consumed with every slight, real or perceived. (See: POLITICO's 2012 Live) The still-unpublished manuscript, obtained by POLITICO, reveals Palin, as a candidate for governor, penning letters-to-the-editor in praise of herself, to be sent under other names. It blames the candidate for inflaming, rather than ignoring, scurrilous rumors. And it quotes her pledging to avoid appearing on any network other ...
Pro-union website blocked in Wisconsin state Capitol Post Date: 2011-02-22 14:15:55 by go65

Madison, Wisconsin (CNN) -- A left-leaning website that union supporters used to rally protesters in Wisconsin was partially blocked as demonstrators gathered in the state Capitol over a controversial budget bill. The website, defendwisconsin.org, could not be accessed on Monday and into Tuesday morning in the Capitol building, where crowds assembled over proposed legislation that would increase the costs of benefits to public employees and curb their collective-bargaining rights. Wisconsin Democratic Party press secretary Graeme Zielinski blamed Gov. Scott Walker and Republican lawmakers -- who returned to work Tuesday -- for causing the outage. "In a direct assault on the First ...

Holy Cow! Md. GOPers Have a Beef With "Oprah"Bad judgment or "udder" nonsense? A political leader in Maryland is under fire because of the name of a family pet. Diana Waterman, the newly elected First Vice Chairman of the state Republican Party, has a black Angus cow named "Oprah." According to the Baltimore Sun, the issue came to light on a recent Facebook posting when the cow birthed a calf. The Sun says the posting caught the attention of Sveinn Storm, who runs a Queen Anne's County-focused blog called "Pave Our County?" Storm criticized Waterman's naming the cow after the African-American talk show host who has struggled with her ...
Sen. Scott Brown says, 'I'm not a Tea Party member,' welcomes GOP primary Post Date: 2011-02-22 13:35:17 by go65

"You're talking about being an ideologue? If you're looking for one, I'm not it," said Sen. Scott Brown. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) said he doesn't consider himself a member of the Tea Party movement and would welcome any primary challenger. Brown, the Republican senator from deep-blue Massachusetts whose win in a special election last year in part catalyzed the Tea Party movement, said he considers himself just a Republican, though one with sympathies toward some Tea Party issues. "Hey, nothing wrong with a primary. I welcome all challengers," Brown said Tuesday morning on MSNBC. He said Monday evening that he didn't identify as a member of the ...

Not much of a surprise, this outcome, as he'd been signaling for weeks he didn't have the fire in the belly for a presidential bid, but South Dakota Sen. John Thune (R) made it official today: he's not running for president. "At this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for America's future here in the trenches of the United States Senate," he said in a statement released by his senate campaign organization. "For months now, my wife Kimberley and I have received encouragement from family, friends, colleagues, and supporters from across South Dakota and the country to run for the presidency of the United States. We have appreciated hearing their ...
