In the recent wave of internet regulations emerging from California, one stands out as particularly contentious: AB 587, labeled the “transparency” bill. While the overarching concept of transparency has been applauded by some, the real-world implications of this particular legislation have raised alarms across the digital space as, in this instance, it’s being used as a form of censorship. Elon Musk and X, with his notable influence and resources, has stepped into the spotlight to challenge this law’s validity and is welcomed since a similar lawsuit against the bill failed in recent weeks. California may soon require judges to consider if a parent “affirms” their child’s “gender identity” when making custody decisions under a bill that the California Senate passed Wednesday. Assembly Bill 957 considers parental affirmation of a child’s “gender identity or gender expression” to be a part of the health and well-being of a child, which is considered during custody or visitation proceedings in family court. Democratic California Sen. Scott Wiener and Democratic California Assembly Member Lori Wilson introduced the legislation in February and it passed the California Senate 30-9 Wednesday, according to The Associated Press. South Dakota farmers are celebrating a major victory. Their state’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted unanimously on Wednesday to reject a controversial carbon-capture pipeline proposal. Navigator CO2 Ventures is one of two private, for-profit companies that have been threatening to gobble up thousands of acres of private land throughout the Great Plains, for the ostensible purpose of saving the earth. They intend to capture carbon dioxide emitted from ethanol plants throughout the Corn Belt and pipe it thousands of miles away to underground storage. The pipeline system was slated to cross 112 miles of eastern South Dakota farmland. Click for Full Text!

Carlton Lewis Exonerated Following 31 Years of Wrongful Conviction for Second-degree Murder in Syracuse, NY

Carlton Lewis was exonerated today in Syracuse, New York, more than three decades after he was wrongly convicted and incarcerated for second- degree murder in 1992. New DNA testing results exclude Mr. Lewis from the scene of the crime and confirm his continued assertion of innocence. No crime scene evidence links Mr. Lewis to the murder. Three common contributing factors to wrongful conviction were present in the prosecution’s case against Mr. Lewis in 1992: the testimony of an incentivized witness; a false confession, and hair microscopy – a forensic technique that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged leads to inaccurate results and wrongful convictions. Annalyse Gosselin would like a new coat. Hers is ripped, and its zipper doesn’t work anymore. She’d also like a new phone and to eat at a restaurant one of these days— the last time she dined out was in May, on her 20th birthday—but can’t afford those things either. Gosselin works two jobs, at a grocery store and part-time as a nursing assistant, but she says that nets her less than $20,000 a year. That isn’t nearly enough to thrive where she lives in Boston, where the median one-bedroom apartment rents for about $3,000 a month. Click for Full Text!
