If the federal government can support abortion rights, why cant it also support light bulb choice, Sen. Rand Paul asked Thursday morning. And dont even get him started about his toilet. The Kentucky Republican began making the link between the personal, the political and the plumbing-related when he asked Kathleen Hogan, the DOE deputy assistant secretary on energy efficiency, I was wondering if youre pro-choice? Im pro-choice of bulbs, Hogan responded. Actually, thats the point, Paul said, during an appliance efficiency hearing at the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The point is that most members of ...

Nichols is representing himself in a pending lawsuit about his diet. He says the lack of whole grains and fresh food in his diet harms his health and violates his religious beliefs, causing him to "sin against God." Nichols' handwritten six page filing, available on PACER, says he knows that he will be thrown "in the hole" for his hunger strike after ...

General Motors' finance chief is leaving after being passed over for the CEO job. Chris Liddell, who guided the company to its first profitable year since 2004 and led its successful public stock offering, will step down on April 1 after just 15 months at GM. He'll be replaced by Treasurer Dan Ammann, a former Wall Street banker, the company announced Thursday. Liddell, the former CFO of Microsoft Corp., was once considered a candidate to succeed Chief Executive Ed Whitacre. But GM's board instead picked current Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson when Whitacre left last August. During a hastily arranged conference call with reporters, Liddell said he had no job lined up, but ...

he standoff over union rights that rocked Wisconsin and the nation for weeks headed for a swift end Thursday, as Republican lawmakers were set to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from the state's public workers and deliver one of the strongest blows to the power of unions in years. Wisconsin Senate Republicans outmaneuvered their missing Democratic colleagues late Wednesday, using an unexpected but surprisingly simple procedural move to remove all spending measures from Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining legislation and allow them to vote without Democrats present. The gambit set up a Thursday vote in the Assembly, after which the legislation would need only ...

It turns out President Obama's efforts to foment civic unrest organize government unions against taxpayers were just as successful as his laser-like focus on jobs. Which is to say: the result was an epic fail. Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate have voted to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from public workers after discovering a way to bypass the chamber's missing Democrats. All 14 Senate Democrats fled to Illinois nearly three weeks ago, preventing the chamber from having enough members present to consider Gov. Scott Walker's so-called "budget repair bill" -- a proposal introduced to plug a $137 million budget shortfall. The Senate requires a ...

Peter King, IRA supporter and enthusiastic counter-terrorism advocate By Peter Finn Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, March 5, 2011 In 1985, the Irish government boycotted the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City, the biggest celebration in the Irish American calendar. The cause of its umbrage was Peter T. King, that year's grand marshal and someone the Irish government said was an "avowed" supporter of a terrorist organization, the Irish Republican Army. King, then a local politician on Long Island, was one of the most zealous American defenders of the militant IRA and its campaign to drive the British out of Northern Ireland. She told the committee that she recently won a national "I Love My Librarian" Award from the Carnegie Corp. and The New York Times -- an honor that included a check, made out to McDaniel, for $5,000. "I plan to report that money on my income tax and I expect to pay taxes on it," she told the lawmakers. "Even though I donated the money in its entirety to the public middle school where I work." You heard that right. She gave the whole five grand, after taxes, to her school. If you live in Portland, that's your school, too. It was only the beginning. McDaniel said she's "happy to pay those taxes" because the way she sees it, taxes are ...

This spring, the United Arab Emirates is expected to close a deal for $7 billion dollars worth of American arms. Nearly half of the cash will be spent on Patriot missiles, which cost as much as $5.9 million apiece. But what makes those eye-popping sums even more shocking is that some of the workers manufacturing parts for those Patriot missiles are prisoners, earning as little as 23 cents an hour. (Credit Justin Rohrlich with the catch.) The work is done by Unicor, previously known as Federal Prison Industries. Its a government-owned corporation, established during the Depression, that employs about 20,000 inmates in 70 prisons to make everything from clothing to office ...

Broder, who filed his last column for the Post just a month ago, died Wednesday at age 81 from complications from diabetes. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans' confidence in the way the country is going has slumped to a two-year low in the last month, and one pollster blamed soaring gas prices. A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Wednesday the proportion of people who believe the United States is on the wrong track rose seven points to 64 percent from February, in a fresh challenge to President Barack Obama. It was the highest number of people in an Ipsos poll who think the country on the wrong track since Obama took office in January 2009. The survey comes as many indicators show an improving U.S. economy. Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said the rating was a direct result of gasoline prices that have risen ...

During a debate (see pg. 2791) regarding a certain Dr. Houard, who had been incarcerated in Spain, the issue was raised on the floor of the House of Representatives as to whether the man was a US citizen. Representative Bingham (of Ohio), stated on the floor:
“As to the question of citizenship I am willing to resolve all doubts in favor of a citizen of the United States. That Dr. Houard is a natural-born citizen of the United States there is not room for the shadow of a doubt. He was born of naturalized parents within the jurisdiction of the United States, and by the express words of the Constitution, as amended to-day, he is declared to all the world to be a citizen of the United ...

It appears parent company Pepsico is forcing the good Cap'n to walk the plank. Cap'n Crunch was once the No. 1 breakfast cereal, but pressure from the White House and health activists is having an effect on how PepsiCo and other food companies peddle their products to kids. Sales of the cereal were down 6.8 percent in 2010. Last year, PepsiCo vowed to reduce added sugar per serving by 25 percent and saturated ...

John Boehner famously grew up mopping the floors of his fathers bar, so presumably he knows little about hobnobbing with foreign royalty, one of his duties as Speaker. So in December, the Ohio Republicans office spent $5,800 to register a staff member for a protocol class to learn the niceties of exchanging gifts, arranging seating plans and organizing large events with visiting dignitaries. The class is run by an accredited private academy, the Protocol School of Washington. The five-day training to take place in May Boehners office saved $500 on the tuition by registering ahead of time covers topics such as dining skills, titles and forms of address, ...
