GOP House member resigns after mental illness remarks

CONCORD – Rep. Martin Harty, a Barrington Republican, has resigned his House seat in the wake of fire he drew for remarks on mental illness and population control. Harty, who turns 92 this month, came into spotlight last week after telling a voter during a phone call that he thought the best treatment for the mentally ill would be a one-way trip to Siberia. He also said population growth and mental illness could be controlled with eugenics, a form of genetic engineering commonly associated with Hitler's Germany. In his letter to Speaker of the House William O'Brien, Harty apologized not for what he said, but for the disruption he caused. Citing what he called "slightly ...

ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC and NPR Ignore Death Threats to Wisconsin Republicans

Numerous death threats were made against Wisconsin Republican lawmakers last week, but you wouldn't know about it if your only news sources were ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, and NPR. Bucking the boycott was Fox News's Bill O'Reilly Friday (video follows with transcript and commentary): BILL O'REILLY: But first, death threats in Wisconsin and that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points" memo. The attorney general's office in that state investigating a number of death threats against some Republicans who voted to diminish union power. A radio station obtained this email, quote: "Please put your things in order because you will be killed and your ...

Politifact: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says Wisconsin is broke
Post Date: 2011-03-14 16:10:22 by go65

Republicans from Washington to Madison have adopted a new expression when it comes to describing the state of government finances: "We’re broke." Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker started using the "broke" description as he unveiled his controversial budget-repair bill, which would force state employees to pay more for health care and pensions and curtail collective bargaining rights for most public employees. "I don't have anything to negotiate," Walker said Feb. 11, 2011, the day he unveiled his budget-repair bill, aimed at closing a $137 million gap in the budget that ends June 30, 2011. "We are broke in this state. We have been broke for ...

Pilots lock down cockpit over praying passengers

Pilots lock down cockpit over praying passengers LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Pilots on an Alaska Airlines flight locked down the cockpit and alerted authorities after three passengers conducted an elaborate orthodox Jewish prayer ritual during their Los Angeles-bound flight. Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan says the crew of Flight 241 from Mexico City became alarmed Sunday after the men began the ritual, which involves tying leather straps and small wooden boxes to the body. The cockpit was placed on a security lockdown - meaning the door couldn't be opened even for pilots to leave briefly. FBI and customs agents, along with police and fire crews, met the plane at the gate at Los Angeles ...

Wis. governor greeted at Washburn fundraiser by thousands of protesters

WASHBURN — Wisconsin’s protracted family fight over the budget and public employee unions moved to this Bayfield County town Saturday evening, as embattled Gov. Scott Walker spoke at an invitation-only event and was greeted by at least 2,000 angry protesters outside. Walker arrived in a convoy of six unmarked police cars that pulled up at 5:45 p.m. to the Steak Pit for a Republican Lincoln Day fundraiser. The large, boisterous crowd, which had been lining the streets leading to the restaurant since 4:30, quickly recognized him and erupted in boos and shouts of “Recall Walker.” The convoy moved through quickly and without incident, and most of the protesters began to ...

Our younger daughter (age 12) recently saw a movie called "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." The plot involves a Victorian-era man played by Sean Connery (swoon, thud) who gathers together some of the most famous characters from literature, including Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo, etc. on a secret mission to fight a technological madman. My daughter loved the movie and decided she wanted to read all the books concerning the characters. So far she's read "The Portrait of Dorian Gray," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." We have all the volumes in our personal library of 5,000-plus books, so she ...

Michele Bachmann Butchers American History in New Hampshire

Michele Bachmann continued her 2012 presidential flirtation today with what is quickly being called the “gaffe her ’round the Internet.” Speaking at a Manchester, New Hampshire event sponsored by the Republican Liberty Caucus, the Tea Party favorite tried to establish a rapport with her audience and with the Granite State generally over a common love of freedom. “You’re the state where the shot was heard ’round the world at Lexington and Concord,” Bachmann told the crowd. (WMUR has the video.) Of course Lexington and Concorde are about an hour’s drive south of Manchester … in Massachusetts. It’s probably not the best way to introduce ...

The battle over Internet sales tax

The battle over Internet sales taxes, simmering for more than a decade, is boiling over. And I think somebody bought the tea kettle on Amazon.com for $39.95. Free shipping. No sales tax. Actually, there is, but more about that later. It is no wonder the issue is taking on a new urgency. States face a 2012 budget deficit of $125 billion and are under heavy pressure to find revenue wherever they can. In 2010, E-commerce grew by nearly 15 percent to $165 billion. And $10 billion in tax revenue is on the table. On Main Street, many retailers are getting pounded by online competition, at the cost of local jobs. In just the past few days, lawmakers in Colorado, Minnesota, Connecticut, and ...

Rep. Allen West slams military diversity report

The Military Leadership Diversity Commission’s (MLDC) conclusion this week that there are too many white men in senior positions in the military “is a slap in the face” to those minorities who have achieved seniority, according to retired Lt. Colonel and Florida Republican Rep. Allen West. According to the MLDC’s report, released Monday, 77 percent of active duty senior officers are white, 8 percent are black, 5 percent are Hispanic and 16 percent are women. The report suggested the lack of minorities in military leadership is something that needs to change. To that end, the commission’s report includes 20 recommendations on how to increase the proportion of ...

In a CNN commentary entitled Is the Earth Striking Back?, journalist and author Alan Weisman opines on the relationship between Anthropogenic Global Warming and a recent spate of powerful earthquakes: As [the glaciers] flow off the land, we are warned, seas rise. Yet something else is lately worrying geologists: the likelihood that the Earth’s crust, relieved of so much formidable weight of ice borne for many thousands of years, has begun to stretch and rebound. As it does, a volcano awakens in Iceland (with another, larger and adjacent to still-erupting Eyjafjallajokull, threatening to detonate next). The Earth shudders in Haiti. Then Chile. Then western China. Mexicali-Calexico. ...

Company looks at Grand Lake St. Marys for waste-to-energy facility

GRAND LAKE ST. MARYS — An Ohio company says it can parlay the problem of too much animal waste winding up in Grand Lake St. Marys into a new facility that could turn the waste into energy and add new jobs in the area. It’s a waste-to-energy methane digester that would produce usable methane from the manure. It could be the fifth such project for the company, Quasar Energy Group of Cleveland. It’s seeking a federal grant of $1 million for the $2.24 million facility. Farm runoff is a major cause of a cyanobacteria outbreak at the lake that closed down a $200 million tourism industry last summer and forced state officials to scramble for a solution. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown ...

TSA to retest airport body scanners for radiation (10x higher then advertised)

The Transportation Security Administration announced Friday that it would retest every full-body X-ray scanner that emits ionizing radiation — 247 machines at 38 airports — after maintenance records on some of the devices showed radiation levels 10 times higher than expected. The TSA says that the records reflect math mistakes and that all the machines are safe. Indeed, even the highest readings listed on some of the records — the numbers that the TSA says were mistakes — appear to be many times less than what the agency says a person absorbs through one day of natural background radiation. Even so, the TSA has ordered the new tests out of "an abundance of caution ...

Clearing-up Today’s Obama Energy Lies by Jeff Dunetz This afternoon the President of the United States tried one again to mislead the public about domestic oil production and how much untapped oil is left in the ground. He said that domestic oil production is at the highest level in seven years and he indicated that American reserves are not adequate to help the US reduced its dependence on foreign oil. If Congressman Wilson was in the audience he might have repeated his famous shout “You Lie.” Domestic Oil Production. Obama commented that US oil production was at its highest point in seven years. That was both incorrect and misleading. Daily average production of oil last ...

This is not a parody. Treehugger, oft-quoted by lefty journalists, really believes that today’s earthquake in Japan was caused by global warming. From Treehugger: -- I know headlines like that might just make most folks roll their eyes at this point — I mean, what doesn’t climate change cause these days, am I right? And I realize that people are skeptical of news-cycle tie-ins, like this very story appears to be. But just because it’s sort of depressing to keep tabs on all of the myriad impacts of ol’ climate change occurring the world over, doesn’t mean we should be glossing over facts like this: Geologists believe that global warming may already be causing more earthquakes, ...

ASHINGTON — The United States has an oil reserve at least three times that of Saudi Arabia locked in oil-shale deposits beneath federal land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, according to a study released yesterday. But the researchers at the RAND think tank caution the federal government to go carefully, balancing the environmental and economic impacts with development pressure to prevent an oil-shale bust later. "We've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East," said James Bartis, RAND senior policy researcher and the report's lead author. He added, "If we go faster, there's a good chance we're going to end up at a dead ...

OBAMA MOTTO ~ KEEP AMERICA OUT OF WORK ENERGY WARS Gas to hit $5/gallon in 2011? Obama continues offshore drilling ban in favor of wind farms

With OPEC targeting $100/barrel oil as OPEC oil ministers gathered last week for a meeting in Cairo, 2011 may see oil challenge the $148/barrel all-time high reached in July 2008. This comes at a time when the Obama administration is continuing a ban on offshore drilling in favor of offshore wind farms. No amount of spin will win the Obama administration gains in public approval if gasoline tops $4/gallon or threatens to reach $5/gallon – an economic nightmare the American public might well see develop in 2011. OPEC members Iran, Venezuela and Libya have weighed in favor of the $100/barrel target, rejecting Saudi Arabia’s preference for prices centered at the $75 level, the ...

In the wake of AOL's buying the Huffington Post, the company said Thursday that it will lay off 900 workers. That amounts to cutting 20% of AOL's staff. AOL spokesman Graham James confirmed to Computerworld that 200 workers from the company's offices in New York and Dulles, Va. will be laid off. The U.S. jobs will be cut in the media and tech areas. James also said 700 people in AOL's offices in India will be let go, although 300 of them will be rehired by Hewlett Packard to work in support services for AOL. AOL, which has become something of an Internet has-been, is looking to reinvent itself and, as part of that goal, announced early last month that it was purchasing ...

We don't have to rely on foreign oil anymore! It is just a matter of drilling and getting the oil out. The oil is there! Remember the song...."America, America God shed his grace on thee"? It is true! God provided this country with more than enough oil for generations to come. Did you know... There is a massive 200 billion barrel oil field located in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. And it even gets better! Because of new horizontal drilling technology, it is estimated that this huge field may even ...

Ohhh, water boarding Islamic freedom fighters is morally wrong! Ohhh, putting women’s underwear on their heads is barbaric. Somehow I suspect he won't be receiving congratulations and thanks for his actions. Gov. Scott Walker on Friday directed two state agencies to rescind layoff notices because the Legislature passed the budget-repair bill. Walker sent his directive to the state Department of Administration and the office of State Employment Relations. Walker issued this statement: "The Legislature helped us save 1,500 middle-class jobs by moving forward this week with the budget repair. The state will now be able to realize $30 million in savings to balance the budget and allow 1,500 state employees to keep their jobs. The reforms contained in this legislation, which require modest health care and ...

In an impassioned speech on the Senate floor this morning, Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) rebuked President Obama for sitting on the sidelines in the debate over federal spending. “Why are we doing all this when the most powerful person in these negotiations — our president — has failed to lead this debate or offer a serious proposal for spending and cuts that he would be willing to fight for?” Manchin asked. The freshman senator slammed both parties for proposing spending plans that are “extremely partisan and unrealistic.” The Democratic plan to cut $4.7 billion “doesn’t go nearly far enough [and] utterly ignores our fiscal reality,” he said. ...

A killer tsunami has devastated Japan and is now threatening Hawaii and the Pacific Coast of the US. But just last month, Republicans voted to gut funding for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center—a cut that would cripple the National Weather Service's ability to issue warnings about such disasters. In February, the union representing the National Weather Service warned that the Republican cuts could place the residents of Hawaii in mortal danger. "People could die... It could be serious," Barry Hirshorn, Pacific region chairman of the National Weather Service Employees Organization, told Hawaii's Star Advertiser.
