My wife has her citizenship appointment tomorrow morning Post Date: 2011-04-19 10:27:41 by no gnu taxes

She's from Honduras and has been in the US about 15 years and we've been married about 10, but she is just now getting around to this. She's been practicing US civics questions online for the last few months and generally gets about 80-90% correct. Lot of hoops to jump through to accomplish this. She is nervous, but I think she'll be ok. Anybody else gone through this recently or know someone who has?
Senator Paul and Rep. Weiner on "State of the Union" Post Date: 2011-04-19 00:02:22 by A K A Stone

CROWLEY: I'm Candy Crowley and this is State of the Union. When congress returns from its Easter recess it faces must-do legislation to raise the debt ceiling so the U.S. can pay its loan obligations. Here to talk about that and what Americans can expect for the rest of the session is conservative freshman Senator Rand Paul, a member of the Tea Party. Senator, thank you so much for joining us. Let's talk about that debt ceiling bill. As you know, the U.S. will not be able to pay its bills unless you all agree to raise the debt ceiling. Are you willing to send the president a clean bill that just doesn't attach anything you want to it, just says, OK, raise the debt ceiling? ...
Brewer vetoes presidential 'birther' bill [Full Thread] Post Date: 2011-04-18 22:59:33 by Skip Intro

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill to require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names can appear on the state's ballot. The bill vetoed by Brewer on Monday would have made Arizona the first state to pass such a requirement. The Arizona bill included proof-of-qualification for all candidates appearing on Arizona ballots, with those varying by the office sought. Hawaii officials have certified Obama was born in that state, but so-called "birthers" have demanded more proof. Brewer said in her veto letter that she was troubled that the bill empowered Arizona's secretary of state to judge the ...
Rand Paul questioned about possible presidential bid in Lexington Post Date: 2011-04-18 20:52:10 by A K A Stone

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul was bombarded with questions about his possible bid for the presidency Monday as he brought his message of limited government and his new Tea Party book to Lexington. Paul, a Bowling Green eye surgeon who won his maiden political race last year with strong support from the Tea Party movement, told a crowd of nearly 400 at a Commerce Lexington luncheon that the nation's main problem is its debt and that government is filled with "busybodies" run amok with regulations. On WVLK-AM 590's Sue Wylie show earlier in the day and after his 18-minute Commerce Lexington speech, Paul was peppered with questions about his possible run for president next ...
'Patriotic Millionaires' Ask to Be Taxed More Post Date: 2011-04-18 18:35:47 by CZ82

'Patriotic Millionaires' Ask to Be Taxed More By Ben Terris, Wednesday, April 13, 2011 | 10:03 a.m. If President Obama's deficit-reduction speech today includes a call to end the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, there will surely be pushback; Republicans have already begun a preemptive attack on raising taxes. One group of millionaires, however, is saying that they are more than willing to pay more for the good of their country. The Patriotic Millionaires penned a letter to Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and House Speaker John Boehner, urging them to increase taxes on incomes over $1,000,000. The Millionairesa group ...
Mean streak: Obama is not as nice as he looks Post Date: 2011-04-18 18:22:25 by calcon

Liberal Democrats were often befuddled by President Reagan's "Teflon presidency." By their lights, Reagan could commit the most heinous acts, but their criticisms were usually shrugged off by the American people, who judged him a "nice guy" who deserved the benefit of the doubt. President Obama has enjoyed something similar during his first 2 1/2 years in office. Even as public opposition mounted to his policies -- Obamacare, the failed economic stimulus program, cap and trade, skyrocketing government deficits -- Obama retained a reserve of public good will reflected in consistently strong personal favorability ratings. People who didn't like his policies ...
S&P goes negative on US Post Date: 2011-04-18 11:29:52 by calcon

The long-awaited market reaction to accelerating US debt and uncontrolled deficit spending has arrived. Standard & Poors issued a blunt warning today that it will re-evaluate Americas credit rating in the near future unless Washington acts to control its red ink, and that a lower rating and therefore higher interest payments is under consideration: Standard & Poors cut its ratings outlook on the U.S. to negative from stable while keeping its triple-A rating on the worlds largest economy. Relative to its AAA-rated peers, the U.S. has very large budget deficits and rising government indebtedness, and the path to addressing those issues is ...
Not Tax Cuts, Not Wars, and Not Bailouts Post Date: 2011-04-18 10:32:27 by no gnu taxes

Your average poorly informed lefty (but I repeat myself) will reliably tell you that our current fiscal straits are the result of three things: 1. Bush’s wars; 2. Bush’s tax cuts for the rich; 3. Bush’s bank bailouts.
That is not true, of course: The main bank bailouts (odious as they were) have been paid back, often at a profit. The money-losing parts (and the likely money-losing parts) are the ones insisted upon by Barack Obama and his Democratic colleagues: the foreclosure-prevention programs, the endless maintenance of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, etc.
The Iraq War, in its most expensive year, cost $140 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Its total cost over the ...
Sheriff: Missing parrot bones prompt dispute Post Date: 2011-04-18 08:39:25 by war

The quest for missing bones in rural Lancaster County could be the subject of a late-night mystery show. If those bones didn't belong to a tropical bird, that is. The saga of Polly started about a year ago, when a parrot's owners gave their bird to a couple in Bennet. Sometime around Christmas, the bird's new owners informed the old owners that a dog killed the parrot. Unconvinced, the former owners showed up at the new owners' home at noon Sunday demanding to see proof the bird was dead. They thought the new owners had sold it. When no bird bones were produced, a dispute ensued that involved a call to the Lancaster County Sheriff. No one was arrested or ticketed, but ...
The IRS: Even Worse Than You Think Post Date: 2011-04-17 18:45:38 by CZ82

The IRS: Even Worse Than You Think by Dan Mitchell Since it is tax-filing season and we all want to honor our wonderful tax system, lets go into the archives and show this video from last year about the onerous compliance costs of the internal revenue code. Narrated by Hiwa Alaghebandian of the American Enterprise Institute, the mini-documentary explains how needless complexity creates an added burden sort of like a hidden tax that we pay for the supposed privilege of paying taxes. Two things from the video are worth highlighting. First, we should make sure to put most of the blame on Congress. As Ms. Alaghebandian notes, the IRS is in the unenviable position of trying ...
Ron Paul's son Robert considering a congressional run Post Date: 2011-04-17 17:52:51 by Ferret Mike

First it was just Ron Paul. An obstetrician-gynecologist and libertarian-leaning Republican from Lake Jackson, Paul was elected to the U.S. House more than 20 years ago and maintains a devout following of those who share his anti-war, anti-tax, limited-government beliefs. Then he was joined by his son, Rand, a Republican ophthalmologist, who became a darling of the Tea Party movement and was elected last year to represent Kentucky in the U.S. Senate. Now a third Paul -- Robert, a doctor who runs a family medical practice in Benbrook and lives in Fort Worth -- is mulling a congressional bid of his own. After campaigning for his father, most notably giving speeches during the elder ...
Some blacks now have doubts about Obama Post Date: 2011-04-17 17:09:52 by CZ82

Some blacks now have doubts about Obama Star Parker - Syndicated Columnist - 9/14/2009 8:20:00 AM Americans of all political persuasions agree that the nation has problems. Big problems. And here's where we all part company. The political left, who now control our government, thinks we need more government -- a lot more. Those on the right see our problems as the result of excess government and want to move things in the opposite direction. The fact that Democrats, with their man in the White House and control of both houses of Congress, are having difficulty getting their big government programs passed says something about the strength of the grassroots push back now taking place. ...

Oregon Capitol mystery: Who wants to kill the Independent Party? Post Date: 2011-04-16 14:48:46 by Ferret Mike

SALEM -- Here's a state Capitol mystery: Who ordered a hit on the Independent Party of Oregon? Nobody wants to claim credit for a bill that would neuter the Independent Party by saying it could no longer use the word "independent." That's like telling a showgirl she can stay in the business as long as she wears a burka. The instigator of House Bill 2442 did it in a way that ensured he or she wouldn't leave any fingerprints. Even more puzzling, the bill received a hearing last week and no one was willing to testify in favor of it, something you almost never see at the Legislature. In the best tradition of Agatha Christie, several people admit they have a beef against ...

A week after the government avoided a shutdown and came to an agreement on a budget U.S. Sen. Rand Paul voted against, Paul was in Bowling Green to speak to tea party supporters at a tax day rally Friday on the square. Speaking to the Daily News before the gathering, the Kentucky Republican said his message to them is that the tea party is a major force in American politics. Click here for more photos. We are really just getting started, Paul said. We have had some electoral success. Now we have to translate that into the ability to try to change whats going on in Washington. Paul also spent time meeting with local constituents at his state offices in ...
Huntsman to Obama: 'You are a remarkable leader' Post Date: 2011-04-16 02:42:25 by Ferret Mike

Well, this won't help Jon Huntsman's campaign among Republican primary voters. The former ambassador to China -- and possible GOP presidential candidate -- praises Obama in a handwritten note obtained by The Daily Caller website. "You are a remarkable leader -- and it has been a great honor getting to know you," Huntsman wrote in an Aug. 16, 2009, note. The word "remarkable" is underlined. In the letter, the former Utah governor thanks Obama for "the graciousness and kindness you have shown me and my family -- particularly your confidence in my ability to represent you in China." The Caller also obtained a Huntsman letter to former president ...

Talk about a political family dynasty: another son of Texas Rep. Ron Paul is considering a bid for the Senate, Politico reports. Rand Paul already won his senate race in Kentucky last year. And now Robert Paul, a doctor who lives in Fort Worth, tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he has thought about running for the Texas seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. But Paul says hes not sure. I am very happy as a physician, he said. Like his father and brother, Robert Paul is very worried about the governments exploding budget deficits. I have a lot of concern about the debt, he said. Speculation started about a run by ...
Drama erupts on House floor as conservative budget goes down Post Date: 2011-04-15 19:25:25 by Ferret Mike

House lawmakers defeated a proposal by conservative Republicans to make deeper cuts to spending and tax rates than those proposed in the Republican budget, but only after last-minute maneuvering by Democrats on the House floor. In a chaotic scene filled with shouting more typical of that which takes place in the British Parliament, the Republican Study Committee's (RSC) alternative to Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) 2012 budget went down in a 119-136 vote. It was gaveled shut only after Democratic leaders started pushing members to switch their "no" votes to "present," in order to force a face-off between conservatives and the Republican leadership. A total of 176 ...
EPA Admits It Doesn’t Care About Jobs Post Date: 2011-04-15 18:33:34 by CZ82

EPA Admits It Doesnt Care About Jobs The Environmental Protection Agency, which boasts 18,000 full-time employees, a $10 billion budget, and has the power to impose economy-crippling regulations on the American way of life, has admitted a dangerous truth: to them, jobs just dont matter. In a hearing Thursday before the House Environment and Economy Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Co) questioned EPA Assistant Administrator Mathy Stanislaus on the Agencys economic analyses related to legislation. Specifically, Rep. Gardner asked whether the EPA considers the effect its regulations have on jobs. His answer: nope, it does not directly examine regulations ...
Global warming causes mid-April blizzard in Nebraska Post Date: 2011-04-15 16:54:59 by no gnu taxes

A spring blizzard dumped up to 16 inches of snow in Nebraska, stranding dozens of motorists and forcing the closure of state's main highway, Interstate 80, for a 120 mile stretch, officials said on Friday. Nebraska officials urged motorists to stay put on I-80, which was closed Thursday night and remained shut down Friday afternoon to allow authorities to clear stranded vehicles, mainly from a 12-mile construction zone. The construction zone between Paxton and Ogallala, Nebraska, had many stranded semi-trailer trucks. A handful of accidents were reported, but no serious injuries, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said. It will still be slow driving conditions in the area ...

States Look to Bring Gold Standard Back Post Date: 2011-04-15 10:16:32 by jwpegler

Starting in May, Utah residents will be able to shop in a currency other than the dollar -- gold, something that hasn't happened since 1933. Utah became the first U.S. state last month to recognize gold and silver coins minted by the federal government as legal tender. More than a dozen other states are considering similar measures, and are expected to follow Utah's example. The move, proponents say, is caused by declining faith in the U.S. monetary system and concern about rising inflation. The gold standard, a monetary system in which the dollar is valued against a certain weight of gold, lasted until the Great Depression, when the Federal Reserve confiscated gold held by the ...

Obama in typical fashion made another campaign speech and made it again in front of a student body. He must love that feel of Community Organizer Supreme. He just loves to be able to feel as if he has the upper hand. He can only accomplish this when he speaks in front of a student body obviously. Possibly, he gets to feel that way ...
Weekly Unemployment Rate Shoots Up Post Date: 2011-04-14 12:41:16 by calcon

An unexpected jolt in people applying for unemployment benefits last week raised the number of applications to a seasonally adjusted 412,000. It was the first increase in three weeks, and could be a sign that people who stopped looking for work are coming back, but the 27,000 additional requests for assistance for the week ending April 9 put the jobless aid figure at its highest point since mid-February. Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 395,750. Applications have dropped by about 6 percent over the past two months. ...
