Texas, which may balance its budget by firing thousands of teachers, plans to commit $25 million in state funds to Formula One auto racing each year for a decade. Four years after motorsports most popular series left the U.S., Texas investors including Clear Channel Communications Inc. co-founder B.J. Red McCombs are building a 3.4-mile (5.5-kilometer) track to bring the event to Austin. Comptroller Susan Combs has agreed to pay $25 million for races through 2022, a subsidy questioned by critics and lawmakers as the state cuts costs to close an estimated $15 billion two-year deficit. I dont understand why 25 people in Austin could not put up $1 million each ...

"I've put together a quick one-question poll I'd like to ask you to take by following this link," the Minnesota congresswoman wrote in the email from her congressional campaign committee. President Barack Obama April 2009: The recovery will take months. Via Bloomberg: President Barack Obama said it will take many more months for the U.S. to fully recover from the recession as employers continue to eliminate jobs. The president said in his weekly address on the radio and the Internet that yesterdays government report on the gross domestic product showed the recession was even deeper than anyone thought when he took office in January. The stimulus legislation passed by Congress in February and measures to stem home foreclosures have helped stem the slide, he said. President Barack Obma May 2011: The recovery will take years. NEW YORK The White House said it is ending its long-running practice of having presidents re-enact televised speeches for news photographers following major addresses to the country, a little-known arrangement that fed suggestions of fakery when Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden. After Obama's live, late-evening address from the East Room of the White House on May 1, five photographers were ushered in to shoot pictures as the president stood at the podium and re-read a few lines of his speech a practice that news organizations have protested for years. Even though The Associated Press and other news outlets said in captions to the photos that they were ...

Ron Paul: I Would Not Have Ordered Bin Laden Raid Post Date: 2011-05-12 23:07:39 by go65

Rep. Ron Paul, a likely Republican presidential candidate known for opposing U.S. military intervention overseas, said if he were president, he would not have duplicated President Obama's plan for taking out the man responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. In a radio interview Tuesday, Paul suggested the U.S. government could have worked with Pakistan to secure Usama bin Laden's capture instead of unilaterally entering the country and killing him -- despite concerns that the Pakistanis could have tipped him off. "It was absolutely not necessary," Paul said of the May 1 CIA-led Navy SEALs raid. Click for Full Text!

Dems Retake Edge In Generic Ballot For First Time Since 2009 Post Date: 2011-05-12 16:39:58 by go65

Just a few months removed from last year's midterm elections, the wave that swept Republicans to an epic victory has already receded, as they now trail Democrats in a generic election ballot, according to the latest TPM Poll Average. Last year, Republicans held a huge edge in generic ballot surveys as voters turned against the party in power, Democrats. But since taking over control of the House of Representatives back in January, that big lead has quickly evaporated, giving Democrats an edge they haven't had in the TPM Poll Average in about a year and a half, since November 2009. < /param> Click for Full Text!

(AP) WASHINGTON - Waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques were not a factor in tracking down Osama bin Laden, a leading Republican senator insisted Thursday. Sen. John McCain, who spent five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, also rejected the argument that any form of torture is critical to U.S. success in the fight against terrorism. In an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, the Republican said former Attorney General Michael Mukasey and others who supported those kind of measures were wrong to claim that waterboarding al Qaeda's No. 3 leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, provided information that led to bin Laden's compound in Pakistan. ...
Newt Gingrich Was More Supportive Of Individual Mandates Than Mitt Romney Post Date: 2011-05-12 14:40:43 by go65

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is set to defend his state's health care law from conservative critics in a high-profile speech on Thursday. But Romney is far from being the potential 2012 Republican presidential contender with the most politically problematic record on health care. That title likely belongs to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who announced his White House aspirations a day prior to Romney's address. In his post-congressional life, Gingrich has been a vocal champion for mandated insurance coverage -- the very provision of President Obama's health care legislation that the Republican Party now decries as fundamentally ...

President Barack Obama's main idea for getting quality health care at less cost was in jeopardy Wednesday after key medical providers called his administration's initial blueprint so complex it's unworkable. Just over a month ago, the administration released long-awaited draft regulations for "accountable care organizations," networks of doctors and hospitals that would collaborate to keep Medicare patients healthier and share in the savings with taxpayers. Obama's health care overhaul law envisioned quickly setting up hundreds of such networks around the county to lead a bottom-up reform of America's bloated health care system. But in an unusual rebuke, an ...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Dragged before Congress as gas prices explode at the pump, oil executives mounted a vigorous defense of their business practices on Thursday -- pushing back against plans to eliminate tax breaks for the "big five" oil and gas companies. All five executives acknowledged rising prices at the pump, but much of their testimony focused on the impact of a plan floated by Senate Democrats that would eliminate a raft of tax breaks for just the top five oil companies. It needs to be pointed out, however, that social democracy ultimately had its roots, not in the American revolutionary state, but in the French revolutionary state. That explains its particular emphasis on class, and its focus on the division between capital and labor; both were key features of Western Europe, but not as prevalent features of the American state, which was dominated by independent farmers and craftsmen (hence, with capital in many if not most instances being owned by labor, and therefore with only vaguely-defined class distinctions, the South being the major exception). In the founding American state, the route to relief of poverty was not through the state (and it is ...

That's a difference between the Senator and a Governor. Congress don't have direct governing experience. All they know is how to increase bureaucratic system.

The reviews are starting to come in about Republican Mitt Romney's health care plan and the central question seems to be: What about the law you signed as governor of Massachusetts? Romney, a leading contender for the GOP presidential nomination, gave a preview of the speech and PowerPoint presentation he'll make later today in an op-ed column for USA TODAY. In the column, he makes little mention of the Massachusetts health care plan that's a model for the federal law he now says he wants to repeal. Click for Full Text!

Community activists in St. Louis became concerned a couple of years ago that local banks weren't offering credit to the city's poor and African American residents. So they formed a group called the St. Louis Equal Housing and Community Reinvestment Alliance and began writing complaint letters to federal regulators.
Apparently, someone in Washington took notice. The Federal Reserve has cited one of the group's targets, Midwest BankCentre, a small bank that has been operating in St. Louis's predominantly white, middle-class suburbs for over a century, for failing to issue home mortgages or open branches in disadvantaged areas. Although executives at the bank say they don't discriminate, ...

Tunica, Mississippi (CNN) -- An agonizing three weeks await the residents of three southern states as a historic flood crest slowly worked its way downstream Thursday toward New Orleans along the Mississippi River. The floodwaters that have already inundated tens of thousands of acres of Missouri farmland and lapped at downtown Memphis, Tennessee, are now on a steady, soggy march through Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Flooding also continues to be a problem in southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois, though the Mississippi and Ohio rivers have already crested in those states. Gov. Bobby Jindal advised residents in southeastern Louisiana Wednesday to evacuate their homes ahead ...

The left is unhappy that no high-profile bankers have gone to jail in the financial crisis. But the real culprits were - and still are - in Washington. They've gotten off scot-free. A growing chorus is complaining that federal prosecutors have dragged their feet in the aftermath of the mortgage mess. Despite a raft of referrals against financial giants alleging securities fraud and "predatory lending," no senior bank executives have been charged or imprisoned. The media elite demand to know why it is that almost three years after the meltdown, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, ex-AIG CEO Hank Greenberg and other Wall Street honchos aren't rotting behind bars. WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House Republican budget would leave up to 44 million more low-income people uninsured as the federal government cuts states' Medicaid funding by about one-third over the next 10 years, nonpartisan groups said in a report issued Tuesday. The analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Urban Institute concluded that Medicaid's role as the nation's safety net health care program would be "significantly compromised ... with no obvious alternative to take its place," if the GOP budget is adopted.
