A group of 37 former administration officials, academics and foreign policy figures on Monday sent a letter to House Republicans urging them not to support any legislation aimed at defunding the U.S. military mission in Libya. The letter, which was circulated by the Foreign Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, comes as the House is poised to consider a defense appropriations bill that may serve as a vehicle for amendments on the Libyan conflict. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on Friday that President Obama has not sufficiently answered lawmakers questions on the U.S. military operation and that the House may move to defund it as soon as this week. Most of the ...
Rand Paul to America's Hungry Seniors: Let Them Eat Private Charity Post Date: 2011-06-21 20:53:22 by Brian S

In tough economic times, senior citizens often pay a brutal toll. Already saddled with limited means and poor health, it can be a struggle for some seniors even to get regular meals. A 2009 study found that 5 million seniors face the threat of hunger, which is over 11 percent of all senior citizens in the country. A Senate subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging, chaired by Senator Bernie Sanders, held a hearing Tuesday on the human toll and budget consequences of senior hunger. Panelists shared tales of woe from older Americans unable to get enough food, and urged increased funding for nutrition programs under the Older Americans Act of 1965. This might have been ...
Calif. Controller Halts Pay For State Lawmakers, Saying Their Budget Plan Was Not Balanced Post Date: 2011-06-21 17:11:51 by Brian S

California's state controller is halting pay for lawmakers, putting to use for the first time a voter-approved requirement aimed at getting the Legislature to approve budgets on time. Controller John Chiang announced his decision Tuesday, saying lawmakers' budget didn't meet the state's requirement for getting paid under Proposition 25, which voters approved in November. Lawmakers will get their salaries and expenses back once they pass a balanced budget. Chiang issued his decision after conducting an analysis of the budget pushed through by Democratic lawmakers last week on a simple majority vote. Lawmakers said they believed that action allowed them to continue ...

In another example of his lack of genuine concern for Hispanic-Americans, President Obama blew off the annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials for the third year in a row: Leaders of a national Hispanic organization are criticizing President Barack Obama for skipping their annual conference for the third consecutive year after he promised as a candidate in 2008 that he would return as president. Some members of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials also are questioning Obamas commitment to immigration reform, noting that deportations have increased under his watch even as the administration ...
Man Robs Bank So He Can Go To Jail And Get Health Care Post Date: 2011-06-21 11:33:31 by Brian S

Often, crimes are borne of desperation. However, most robberies aren't motivated by a desperate need for health care. James Richard Verone, of Georgia, attempted to steal one dollar from a bank so that he would be arrested, taken to jail and most importantly provided with health care, the Gaston Gazette reported. Verone worked for Coca-Cola for 17 years, but lost that job three years ago. Now 59 years old, Verone can't handle the physical demands of the part-time jobs, like working in a convenience store, that he has successfully been hired for. Hence, he has no health care. The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept, he told the Gazette. ...
Christie Approval Rating Slips to Lowest in Year as Women Turn Thumbs Down Post Date: 2011-06-21 11:13:30 by Brian S

Chris Christies approval rating slid to the lowest in a year as support waned among women, a Quinnipiac University poll said, after the Republican governor of New Jersey cut funding for schools and family planning. Christie, 48, got approving marks from 44 percent of registered voters surveyed, the poll released today showed. Just 36 percent of female voters approved of the first-term governors job performance, down from 39 percent in February. With 53 percent of men approving, the gender gap widened from February, when the figures were 46 percent of women and 58 percent of males, school polls show. The latest survey said 49 percent of voters dislike his policies, matching ...
Bush: ‘Miss Me Yet?’ — Dennis Kucinich: ‘Yes’ Post Date: 2011-06-21 11:07:16 by no gnu taxes

To say that Kucinich longs for the days of George W. Bush would be a wild over statement after all, Kucinich wanted to impeach him but maybe its not a stretch to say Dennis appreciated that Bush was more constitutionally considerate than the current president on the issue of congressional authorization for a conflict: Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) on Thursday ripped President Obama while giving credit to former President George W. Bush for asking Congress to authorize the war in Iraq. The anti-war Democrat, criticizing Obamas handling of the conflict in Libya, noted that Bush formally consulted Congress on the Iraq war in 2002. President Bush came to ...

President Obama rejected the views of top lawyers at the Pentagon and the Justice Department when he decided that he had the legal authority to continue American military participation in the air war in Libya without Congressional authorization, according to officials familiar with internal administration deliberations. Jeh C. Johnson, the Pentagon general counsel, and Caroline D. Krass, the acting head of the Justice Departments Office of Legal Counsel, had told the White House that they believed that the United States militarys activities in the NATO-led air war amounted to hostilities. Under the War Powers Resolution, that would have required Mr. Obama to ...
Rockefeller, Rahall not in support of Amtrak privatization Post Date: 2011-06-21 01:28:44 by socalv8

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said Monday that a House Republican plan to privatize Amtrak service would threaten to eliminate passenger train service in West Virginia. "Amtrak is a lifeline for our nation's communities -- including many among the Cardinal and Capitol Limited lines in West Virginia -- and is an engine of economic growth. "Amtrak provides West Virginians with an affordable way to get between small communities and big cities, and the Republican plan would put it in jeopardy." Current Republican-backed legislation would privatize Amtrak, offering it to the highest bidder on the private market. Two major supporters of the legislation ...
Note to Libtards -- Kenyanesian Economics Has Made The Economy Worse Post Date: 2011-06-20 21:17:23 by no gnu taxes

It has become a common refrain at the White House and among administration supporters that President Obama's aggressive efforts to stimulate growth prevented an economic catastrophe. "We had to hit the ground running and do everything we could to prevent a second Great Depression," Obama told supporters last week. Politically, the claim makes sense. Casting the challenge Obama faced as immense can help explain the economy's lackluster performance in the two years since the recession officially ended. But is it an accurate portrayal of what really happened? IBD reviewed records of economic forecasts made just before Obama signed the stimulus bill into law, as well as ...
Feds Halt Bush-Era Rule Allowing Private Industry To Fund Pipeline Safety Studies Post Date: 2011-06-20 18:51:49 by Brian S

By Associated Press, SAN FRANCISCO Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the federal government will bar industry groups from funding safety studies of onshore pipelines, following an investigation by Hearst Newspapers that revealed the practice. The investigation published Sunday found that that two-thirds of the 174 safety studies of onshore pipelines initiated by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration over the past decade received significant funding from pipeline operators or industry-controlled organizations. LaHoods announcement overturns a Bush-era rule that required at least half the funding for federal pipeline safety research to come ...
Penn team uncovers skeleton of 'world's oldest child' - 108,000 years old Post Date: 2011-06-20 15:48:35 by Fred Mertz

Last year, while a Penn team of archaeologists was working in Morocco, members uncovered a treasure beyond anything they'd imagined - a skeleton of a child from 108,000 years ago. They don't know what killed him at about age 8, but his remains are believed to be one of the most complete ever found of this period. The skeleton promises to open a window into a pivotal time in human evolution when Neanderthals still ruled Europe, and Africans were inventing art and symbolic thought. One of the earliest sites where people left evidence of artwork and symbolism is in Morocco, where a team led by Penn Museum's Harold Dibble found the child. One of Dibble's students was the ...

A YouTube video of Minister Louis Farrakhan taking President Obama to task over the war in Afghanistan and the bombing of Libya is making its way around the Web. In the video, Farrakhan admonishes the president for turning into someone else. Farrakhan says, "We voted for our brother Barack, a beautiful human being with a sweet heart, and now he's an assassin. They turned him into them." He also raises the issue of killing Saddam Hussein over weapons of mass destruction and knowingly sending young men to fight a war based on lies. "You talk about a man killing his own people. When you lie to the American people saying that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. ...

PHILADELPHIA "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn, who along with his cast mates made Americans cringe and snicker through vulgar stunts in their multimillion-dollar TV and movie franchise, was killed early Monday in a fiery car crash. He was 34. Dunn, a daredevil whose most famous skits included diving into a sewage tank and shoving a toy car into his rectum, was driving his 2007 Porsche in suburban Philadelphia when it careered off the road, flipped over a guardrail and crashed into the woods before bursting into flames. A passenger was also killed, and speed may have been a factor in the crash, West Goshen Township police said. The force of impact shattered the vehicle into ...

Bilderberg-Approved Perry Set to Become Presidential Frontrunner Post Date: 2011-06-20 13:16:23 by Capitalist Eric

Monday, June 20, 2011 Every indication suggests that Bilderberg-approved Texas Governor Rick Perry is set to become the frontrunner in the Republican race to challenge Barack Obama for the presidency, illustrating once again how a shady, secretive and undemocratic global elite holds the reigns of true power while Americans are distracted by the delusional notion that they have a genuine choice in 2012. Perry has said he will announce his decision soon. One member of his campaign team said he was closer than ever to joining the race and he was testing the prospects in the early caucus and primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. If he does stand, Republicans ...
Sen. Rand Paul: Obama administration has “failed miserably” Post Date: 2011-06-20 00:28:24 by A K A Stone

Kentucky U.S. Senator Rand Paul slammed the Obama administrations handling of the intervention in Libya, saying President Obama has failed miserably. The Obama Administration has failed miserably in its attempt to justify their unconstitutional war in Libya. Their attempt yesterday to convince Congress that we are in fact not engaged in hostilities was breathtaking in its implications for both Libya and for future presidential war authority, Mr. Paul said in a statement. [President Obama's] policy completely violates his constitutional authority. It also sends a dangerous signal to rogue nations and schoolyard bullies alike: If we hit you hard ...

A Christian ministry's decision to expose as "false teachers" several celebrity ministers it believes are corrupting biblical teachings has prompted a rift, with Jack Van Impe Ministries dropping plans to work in the future with Trinity Broadcasting Network, where it has broadcast for more than two decades. "I Will Not Be Silenced! I will not allow anyone to tell me what I can and cannot preach," Van Impe said in a statement when TBN would not allow his program to air. "When I see heretical teaching leading to apostasy, I will speak out," he said. "The Bible says 'All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for ...

Will Obama Save Ethanol Boondoggle? Jonathan S. Tobin 06.17.2011 - 11:23 AM The ethanol lobby isnt finished, but it is reeling after a 73-27 Senate vote ended the 45-cent-a-gallon subsidy the government gives refiners and the 54-cent-per-gallon tariff on imported ethanol. Earlier in the week, a Republican-led attempt to cut ethanol subsidies was beaten back. Yesterdays more bipartisan vote ended differently. The vote was a historic defeat for the powerful biofuels lobby. It signals what might be the beginning of the end of its ability to maintain massive subsidies that enrich corn farmers and refiners while raising the price of food and doing little to boost Americas ...
Backlog of Cases Gives a Reprieve on Foreclosures Post Date: 2011-06-19 15:57:36 by lucysmom

In New York State, it would take lenders 62 years at their current pace, the longest time frame in the nation, to repossess the 213,000 houses now in severe default or foreclosure, according to calculations by LPS Applied Analytics, a prominent real estate data firm. Clearing the pipeline in New Jersey, which like New York handles foreclosures through the courts, would take 49 years. In Florida, Massachusetts and Illinois, it would take a decade. In the 27 states where the courts play no role in foreclosures, the pace is much more brisk three years in California, two years in Nevada and Colorado but the dynamic is the same: the foreclosure system is bogged down by the volume ...

At a time when many Americans can barely afford Burger King and a movie, Obama boasts of spending a billion dollars on his re-election campaign. Questioned at a recent appearance about the spiraling fuel costs, Obama said, Get used to it and with an insouciant grin and chortle, he told another person at the event, who complained about the effect high fuel prices were having on his family, to get a more fuel-efficient car. The Obamas behave as if they were sharecroppers living in a trailer and hit the Powerball, but instead of getting new tires for their trailer and a new pickup truck, they moved to Washington. And instead of making possum pie, with goats and ...

RAND PAUL: Obama’s unconstitutional Libyan war Post Date: 2011-06-19 00:44:11 by A K A Stone

President Obamas decision to involve U.S. military forces in an unconstitutional, unexplained mission in Libya has left many Americans seeking answers and action from Congress. Why has Mr. Obama ignored the public and congressional questions regarding his actions? Why did he thrust our American soldiers into this battle without the consent of Congress? While Senate Democratic leadership has so far not acted, these are questions that the House of Representatives is attempting to have answered. On June 3, the House passed a resolution demanding that the president provide the American people with specific answers and rational reasoning. So far, Mr. Obama has failed to provide compelling ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Sen. Rand Paul issued the following statement regarding President Obama's mishandling of the situation in Libya. "The Obama Administration has failed miserably in its attempt to justify their unconstitutional war in Libya. Their attempt yesterday to convince Congress that we are in fact not engaged in hostilities was breathtaking in its implications for both Libya and for future presidential war authority. "The argument that our military is not engaged in hostilities because the Libyan military is unable to effectively retaliate has two major problems. First, according to the Administration's report, attacking Libyan air defense is one of the ...
House GOP retreating from borrowing freeze Post Date: 2011-06-19 00:18:52 by A K A Stone

House Republicans appear to be retreating from the idea of an absolute cap on government borrowing, which could be obtained by simply doing nothing regarding the nation's statutory borrowing limit of about $14.3 trillion. But it's clear that the Obama spending plan remains a target for them as they try to address the government's massive spending. While 34 members of the House GOP said in a new WND survey that they like the idea of simply freezing the nation's debt ceiling and cutting spending until the government complies, there were another 171 who said they could support an increase in the debt ceiling as long as there are significant new restrictions on spending. Those ...
