Should Obama be impeached for invoking hate speech? Post Date: 2011-07-07 15:09:59 by no gnu taxes

Wednesday's salvo came hours after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., opened the door to closing wasteful or unfair tax loopholes in the battle over a must-pass proposal to increase the government's borrowing authority. Obama suggested that Republicans are using the debt limit measure "as a gun against the heads" of Americans to retain breaks for corporate jet owners or oil and gas companies. -- This is detestable. Obama is now personally responsible for the next 10,000 murders that occur.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After weeks of impasse, President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders are aiming for "something big" as they resume budget talks on Thursday to avert an imminent default.
With Republicans showing new flexibility on taxes, Democrats say Obama will push negotiators to double their target to $4 trillion (2.5 trillion pounds) in budget savings over 10 years.
That would be an ambitious goal, but there have been a few hints of progress since talks hit a brick wall two weeks ago.
The meeting, which takes place at the White House, is due to start at 11 a.m. EDT (4 p.m. British time) and last about an hour.
Obama will propose cuts in Social Security and ...
Mitt Romney fundraising sparks Republican fears Post Date: 2011-07-07 11:27:02 by go65

The Republican presidential fundraising reports are still coming in, but a clear winner has already emerged: Barack Obama. Whoever claims the GOP nomination is going to find it close to impossible to keep pace with the presidents fundraising juggernaut. That was the lesson of the first real quarter of the money chase, when it was revealed Wednesday that Republican frontrunner Mitt Romneythe GOPs pale version of a cash-collecting machineraised just over $18 million. (See: Mitt Romney's warning signs) Romneys haul was less than what he took in as a first-time candidate out of the gates four years ago. After the former Massachusetts governor, the numbers ...

A small team of Treasury officials is discussing options to stave off default if Congress fails to raise the country's borrowing limit by an August 2 deadline, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. Senior officials, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, have repeatedly said there are no contingency plans if lawmakers do not give the U.S. government the authority to borrow more money. But behind the scenes, top Treasury officials have been exploring ways to prevent a financial meltdown that would be triggered if the government were unable to pay its bills on time, sources told Reuters. Treasury has studied the following issues: - Whether the administration can ...

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama is seeking $3 trillion to $4 trillion in deficit cuts over the next decade, a move that would require putting Social Security, Medicare, defense spending and tax reform on the table as part of a balanced approach to cuts, Democratic officials familiar with the negotiations told CNN. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not say what types of cuts would have to be considered under such a proposal. In the past, one Social Security adjustment debt negotiators have discussed is cost-of-living. The news comes as top Republican and Democratic congressional leaders head to the White House Thursday to negotiate a deal to tackle mounting ...
Senate Armed Services Committee Nixes ‘Worldwide War’ Legislation Post Date: 2011-07-06 20:39:41 by Brian S

The version of the National Defense Authorization Act recently passed by the Senate Armed Services Committee omitted a controversial provision that would have authorized the United States to use military force in any part of the world that was suspected to contain terrorists, including within the U.S. itself. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, which first voiced its opposition to the measure, the "worldwide war" provision was "nowhere to be found" in the official language of the legislation recently released by the committee. Section 1034 was added to the National Defense Authorization Act by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA). The ...
Frum: Can the Debt Crisis Lead to Impeachment? (Not if the GOP will roll over and pee on their bellies as Frum advocates) Post Date: 2011-07-06 16:34:31 by no gnu taxes

The debt-ceiling crisis is growing into an impending constitutional crisis. Imagine this scenario: * House Republicans and the president fail to reach a budget agreement. * House Republicans refuse to raise the debt ceiling before August 2, July 22, or whenever the real moment of crisis is. * The federal government runs out of cash to pay its bills. * Rather than default on obligations, the president announces his opinion that the debt limit is unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment, an argument increasingly heard this past week. He orders the Secretary of the Treasury to continue borrowing anyway. * Now what? Obviously there will be financial consequences, because lenders ...

Left-wing pundits and their cronies in Congress delivered a well-timed second punch to the Obama news conference last week on the continuing fight over an increase in the U.S. debt limit. While Obama tried to show he was "involved" in the negotiations, his henchmen announced that it might not matter; that Congress really had no say in the debt limit. The thrust of their argument is that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution requires the president to do whatever he wants in order to ensure "the validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law ... shall not be questioned." Overlooking the entire context of the section of the amendment -- ensuring ...

Jack Balkin has delved into the legislative history of the provision of the 14th Amendment requiring the federal government to honors all debts, which the Obama administration may invoke if Congress refuses to lift the debt ceiling. He has a fascinating follow up post replying to some objections. He's arguing that the prospect of a debt default ceiling is extermely similar to the precise scenario the prvovision was designed to stop. Click for Full Text!

As Americans gathered to celebrate their independence this past Fourth of July weekend, for some the festivities were tinged with sadness by the mounting evidence that many simply don't know their own nation's history. While a new study showed that only 35% of fourth-graders knew the purpose of the Declaration of Independence, a Marist poll found that 26% of us couldn't identify the country from which the United States announced its separation. In the telling of Republican White House hopeful Rick Santorum, it's all liberals' fault. "This is, in my opinion, a conscious effort on the part of the left," Santorum explained, "to desensitize America to what ...

There is no intelligence pointing to a specific plot, but the U.S. shared its concerns last week with executives at domestic and international carriers. People traveling to the U.S. from overseas may experience additional screening at airports because of the threat, according to the Transportation Security Administration. "These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same activity at every ...

A bill requiring California schools to teach gay history is headed for Gov. Jerry Brown's desk after passing the state Assembly. The bill, SB48, would make California the first state in the union to require history classes and textbooks to include the contributions of gay and lesbian Americans, reports the Los Angeles Times. The governor, who hasn't taken a public position on the bill, has 12 days to sign or veto it; Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected a similar bill in 2006. The bill would require schools to "present a more accurate and nuanced view of American history in our social science curriculum by recognizing the accomplishments of groups that are not often ...

Steven Malanga The Compensation Monster Devouring Cities The real battle over public workers pay is happening in city halls, not state capitols. New Haven mayor John DeStefano has had a good relationship with his citys municipal unions through most of his 17 years in office. But lately, those ties have frayed, thanks to the Democratic mayors claim that city workers wages and benefitsmany granted by DeStefano himself in plusher yearshave become dangerously unaffordable. DeStefano describes New Havens rising worker costs as the Pac-Man of our budget, consuming everything in sight, and he is laying off employees and exploring ...

ATLANTA Educators at nearly four dozen Atlanta elementary and middle schools cheated on standardized tests by either helping students or changing the answers once exams were handed in, according to the results of a yearlong state investigation released Tuesday. The report said that 178 teachers and principals cheated, though only 82 educators actually confessed to misconduct dating as far back as 2001 and affecting thousands of school children, according to a synopsis handed out by Gov. Nathan Deal's office. More than half of the district's 100 schools were examined, and 44 of those had cheating, the synopsis said. The investigators also found a "culture of fear, ...

Utahs independent voters are cooling to the states tea party movement, with support dropping by more than half over the last several months, according to a newly released poll. The dip could have far-reaching ramifications as the conservative movement gears up to once again flex its muscle in the 2012 elections, with leaders vowing to target Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert and a number of state legislators who backed Utahs guest-worker law. And the most direct beneficiary may be U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah. "It seems you have Republican candidates making enormous efforts to ingratiate themselves to Republican delegates and primary voters who are ...

WASHINGTON The White House says that families of service members who commit suicide are now getting condolence letters from the president just like families of troops who die in other ways. The White House has been reviewing the policy since 2009, lobbied by some military families. A White House official said Tuesday that the change was made this week. The official spoke anonymously to discuss policy deliberations. Previously, the White House would send presidential condolences to the families of those who died either in combat or as a result of noncombat incidents in a war zone. Condolence letters were not sent to the families of those who commit suicide, either at home or at war. ...

The Republicans have changed American politics since they took control of the House of Representatives. They have put spending restraint and debt reduction at the top of the national agenda. They have sparked a discussion on entitlement reform. They have turned a bill to raise the debt limit into an opportunity to put the U.S. on a stable fiscal course.
Republican leaders have also proved to be effective negotiators. They have been tough and inflexible and forced the Democrats to come to them. The Democrats have agreed to tie budget cuts to the debt ceiling bill. They have agreed not to ...

A K9 officer in Greenville has died. The Greenville Police Department is grieving over the loss of one of its two police dogs. Her name was Liberty, but she died trapped in the back of a hot squad car. Her handler apparently forgot to put her in the police department kennel when he got off work Wednesday afternoon. This is a difficult time for the Greenville Police Department, Chief Dan Busken told CBS 11 News. And he adds the officer feels terrible. Hes devastated, and I dont know if that term is even strong enough. Ironically, the officer, Jeff Gore, created the K-9 unit 11-years ago. He raised Liberty from a pup. Former New York GOP boss William Powers, credited with playing a key role in electing Rudy Giuliani mayor and George Pataki governor, was effusive in his praise of Cuomo's successes in the just-ended legislative session, and in his prediction of the freshman governor's political future. "Andrew had a fabulous session. It was fabulous. A property-tax cap, ethics reform and, for Democrats, gay marriage," said Powers. "I don't think there's any doubt Obama is going to pick him as his running mate. ...
