CREW Calls for Congressional Investigation into News Corp. Post Date: 2011-07-11 18:17:15 by Brian S

Washington, D.C. Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) called on the House and Senate to investigate whether journalists working for Rupert Murdochs News International (NI), owned by News Corp., have hacked into the voicemail of Americans. Despite claims by NI executives that the phone hacking scandal enveloping Murdoch and his media empire was confined to the now-defunct News of the World, new evidence shows other Murdoch papers used the same tactics. Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was repeatedly targeted for more than a decade by other Murdoch publications. Further, a former New York City police officer claims he was offered money by ...
What Happened to the Jobs? So How's That Stimulus Thing Working Out? Post Date: 2011-07-11 17:08:37 by Capitalist Eric

The US jobs report came out this morning, and it was simply dismal. This week we look at not only the jobs report but also "what-if" proffers for the US and global economies. There's a lot to cover, so let's jump in. First, there were only 18,000 jobs created in June, the lowest since September 2010. While private employment rose by 57,000, government workers dropped by 39,000, continuing a trend as governments at all levels work to cut their budgets. Long-time readers know I think it is important to look at the direction of the revisions, and we got no help. May was revised down by 29,000 jobs and April a further down 15,000. I saw some headlines and talking heads in ...
Obama: Job Losses Prove Stimulus Worked Post Date: 2011-07-11 16:40:30 by no gnu taxes

Three days after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the national unemployment rate had ticked up from 9.1 percent in May to 9.2 percent in June, President Barack Obama said that the loss of jobs in the public sector is evidence that his $830-billion economic stimulus legislation worked. Now, without relitigating the past, Im absolutely convinced, and the vast majority of economists are convinced, that the steps we took in the Recovery Act saved millions of people their jobs or created a whole bunch of jobs, Obama said at his Monday press conference. And part of the evidence of that is as you see what happens with the Recovery Act phasing ...

His case heads to the grand jury on July 11.
Obama: 'Professional Politicians' Understand Debt Crisis Better Than 'The Public' Post Date: 2011-07-11 15:45:41 by no gnu taxes

White House press conference today, President Barack Obama said that "professional politicians" understand the debt crisis better than "the public."
Obama was responding to a question from CBS News Reporter Chip Reid. “The latest CBS News poll showed that only 24 percent of Americans said that you should raise the debt limit to avoid an economic catastrophe," said Reid. "There’s still 69 percent who oppose raising the debt limit. So, is it the problem that you and others have failed to convince the American people that we have a crisis here and how are you going to change that?”
Obama responded: “Let me distinguish between professional politicians and the public at large. You know, ...
Why Conservatives Should Oppose the Death Penalty Post Date: 2011-07-11 13:29:59 by Godwinson

Why Conservatives Should Oppose the Death Penalty Thursday, June 06, 2002 By Matt Hayes / FOXNEWS It is a truism among fellow conservatives that our government is too "big." Government is faulted for mandating education standards and access ramps for the disabled. The criticism extends to state governments, too, which, after all, are responsible for laws requiring that drivers wear seatbelts and refrain from talking on their cell phones while driving. Presently, about 91,000 Web pages incorporate the term "big government." There is wide consensus that our government is altogether too intrusive and too powerful. So if the government should not have the power to ...

President Obama is still seeking the largest deficit reduction deal possible as part of a package deal to raise the debt ceiling, he said in a press conference today. "I continue to push congressional leaders for the largest possible deal," he said from the White House. "It is possible for us to construct a package that would be balanced, share sacrifice [and] would involve both parties taking on their sacred cows." Mr. Obama would not even entertain the notion of failing to get a deal done before the end of the month. "We are going to get this done by August 2," he said. Mr. Obama has been seeking a deal that includes $4 trillion in budget savings over a ...
LONG LINE OF MSM DECEPTION - MSNBC Excludes Ron Paul Post Date: 2011-07-11 08:55:29 by A K A Stone

RTR.org | This just in off the social networks, MSNBC blatantly excludes Congressman Ron Paul off the list of second quarter top fundraisers.
Congressman Paul who raised $4.5 million should be listed as second place on this list. However the media controllers who run MSNBC clearly do not want the Congressman's message of sound money, fiscal responsibility, and sustainable foreign policy to gain traction.
This is just one more in a long line of deceptions perpetuated by the main stream media and another reason to support alternative media, like the reality report.
Lets demand MSNBC to broadcast an apology and clarification.

Heres a billion-dollar piece of news thats shuffling right by while the best minds of our generation debate whether the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) did or did not create a private jet tax break: Leaves, gears, stars: That's pretty much the whole economy. The state of California is getting a cool $838,680,283 in ARRA cashnot to save, create, or fund any jobs but to maintain the unemployment program in a state Standard & Poors says still hasnt got its budget house in order. This fraction of the total stimulus demonstrates an essential truth about the $787 billion Recovery Act, one that the perpetrators of President Barack Obamas ...
Republican Pawlenty raps rival Bachmann Post Date: 2011-07-10 23:15:08 by A K A Stone

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty, trailing in public opinion polls, criticized Republican rival Michele Bachmann on Sunday for a "non-existent" record in the U.S. Congress. Pawlenty, a former governor of Minnesota, is competing for the same conservative voters as Bachmann in the early voting state of Iowa. Bachmann, also from Minnesota and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, is running neck-and-neck in Iowa with front-runner Mitt Romney while Pawlenty had only 6 percent support among Republican voters in a recent poll by the Des Moines Register. "Well, I like Congresswoman Bachmann. I've campaigned for her. I respect her, but her ...

SHANGHAI -- U.S. and Chinese finance officials are meeting in Beijing this week hoping to make progress on long-standing differences over how to oversee the auditing of Chinese companies whose shares are listed in U.S. markets. The meeting comes as questions over possible accounting problems at such companies overshadow fundraising efforts both in the U.S. and in China. American stock and auditing regulators will meet Monday with officials from China's Securities Regulatory Commission and its Finance Ministry. The chairman of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, James R. Doty, said he believed Chinese authorities shared the common goal of seeking to protect investors and ...

New information indicates that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's actions are squarely behind the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) operation known as "Fast and Furious", which orchestrated the delivery of almost 2,000 weapons to Mexican drug cartels[1]. Holder openly proclaimed his connection to the operation in April 2009 during a publicized speech in Mexico, then told a Congressional Committee in May 2011, "I probably heard of Fast and Furious the first time in the last few weeks."[2] The ATF weapons smuggling ring involved the arrest of several government officials with the city of Columbus, New Mexico including the mayor and police chief, but that ...

Millions of Americans endured financial calamities in the recession. But for many in the black community, job loss has knocked them out of the middle class and back into poverty. And some experts warn of a historic reversal of hard-won economic gains that took black people decades to achieve. History is going to say the black middle class was decimated over the past few years, said Maya Wiley, director of the Center for Social Inclusion. But were not done writing history. Adds Algernon Austin, director of the Economic Policy Institutes Program on Race, Ethnicity and the Economy: The recession is not over for black folks. In 2004, the median ...

Wisconsin Prisoners to Replace Union Workers (A better class of criminals) Post Date: 2011-07-09 17:09:22 by Hondo68

In Wisconsin, home of the much-maligned Republican effort to weaken the collective bargaining power of public employees, a local county is considering the use of prison inmates for community upkeep in place of union workers. Racine County Jail prisoners have been limited until now to mowing the grass on highway medians, because unions stood in the way. But with the successful passage of Governor Scott Walkers anti-union legislation, county leaders say inmates could also perform jobs like landscaping, painting and shoveling snow from sidewalks. The change could be a win-win, says County Executive Jim Ladwig, because prisoners would enjoy a sense of value they ...

Tim Pawlenty says Obama is 'like a manure spreader in a windstorm' July 8, 2011, Tim Pawlenty, clearly frustrated with his mediocre results in early polling, came out swinging Friday in Iowa with barbs at President Obama. "Anyone can stand up here and flap their jaw and give a speech," the former Minnesota governor said Friday in a speech in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to a crowd of about 70. "We've had Obama with all his soaring rhetoric, with all this nonsense, he's like a manure spreader in a windstorm. It stinks. It's flying all over the place and it's not pretty," the GOP presidential hopeful complained. Earlier Friday in Waterloo, Pawlenty ...

Social Security Cuts Weighed by Lawmakers Under Change in Inflation Gauge Post Date: 2011-07-08 13:54:25 by Brian S

President Barack Obama and lawmakers are considering cutting Social Security and increasing revenue by changing the way the government measures inflation. Four senior congressional aides said lawmakers are discussing using an alternative yardstick to gauge inflation, known as the chained consumer price index, to determine annual cost-of-living adjustments for millions of Americans. The idea may rile both Democrats and Republicans, because it could mean paring Social Security by $112 billion over 10 years, raising taxes by $60 billion and cutting pension and veterans disability payments by $24 billion, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office ...

President Barack Obama is summoning top congressional Republicans and Democrats to a rare Sunday meeting at the White House to begin hard bargaining on a broad debt-reduction deal. At the July 10 session Obama will make his latest bid to break a partisan impasse over whether to include cuts in entitlement programs and tax increases in an agreement. Both sides in the debate are signaling openness to compromise on each front. Republicans, pressed by Obama to consider raising taxes to reduce the debt, are weighing whether to close loopholes and eliminate some tax breaks in exchange for a commitment from Democrats that Congress will act later on a broad overhaul that lowers tax ...

The debt-ceiling deal that President Barack Obama hopes to negotiate with Republicans won't solve the nation's problem with red ink, as he stated in his first Twitter session with the public. And no, the payroll tax cut he got out of Congress isn't putting an extra $1,000 into the pockets of "almost every single American." Obama took a few shortcuts with the facts Wednesday when fielding questions from people on the social networking site. Twitter's trademark brevity wasn't an issue with the president he answered verbally, for as long as he wanted. Even so, it was a juggling act and not everything came out right. A look at some of Obama's claims ...

Richer People Want Fewer Children
By CATHERINE RAMPELL
The economist Justin Wolfers wrote a provocative post last month arguing that children are “inferior goods.”
For most goods — “normal goods” — people desire more of them as their income increases. But for inferior goods (like rice) people tend to consume less as they get richer and are able to afford more desirable and expensive goods (like steak).

Americans Dying Younger Than People In Other Countries (USA! USA! USA!) Post Date: 2011-07-08 10:39:58 by Godwinson

Americans Dying Younger Than People In Other Countries Wednesday, June 15 2011 Americans aren't living as long as people in many other developed countries. A study published in the journal "Population Health Metrics" finds the U.S. life expectancy was nearly 81 years for women and nearly 76 years for men in 2007. That means Americans only rank 37th in the world for longevity behind countries like Iceland, Japan, Australia and Canada. Researchers also found large differences from county to county within the U.S. In Collier, Florida, for instance, women can expect to live an average of 86 years, and men in Fairfax County, Virginia typically live to be 81. However, parts ...

The Labor Department's employment report, released this morning, showed the unemployment rate increased to 9.2 percent, with employers adding 18,000 jobs in June. But employees and employers still face a dilemma over the nation's skills gap. The unemployment rate in May was 9.1 percent, after nonfarm payroll employment grew by a modest 54,000 jobs, much fewer than the 110,000 jobs economists expected to be added. Stephen Bronars, senior economist at Welch Consulting, said many economists had grown more pessimistic since the May report, forecasting 80,000 jobs for June. "People were overreacting to that bad news," Bronars said. "I'm a little more optimistic ...
