Palin movie sparks a changing media narrative

As TheDC’s Alex Pappas noted, the big news to come out of the Sarah Palin Newsweek cover story is that she believes she can win, and that her family is the only thing that could keep her from running for president. This line from Palin especially jumped out to me: “Thank goodness the field is not yet set.” But while speculation about Palin’s future is clearly the most immediately newsworthy component, the long-term story might just be how the new Palin film, “The Undefeated,” is helping transform her narrative (as I suggested it might). Ultimately, of course, that could impact her decision regarding whether or not to run. After all, it’s probably fair ...

Coal Industry Attorney’s Blame Coal’s Health Impacts on Inbreeding

Remember the study published a few weeks ago that found a link between mountaintop removal mining and birth defects? Well, so do the coal industry’s lawyers, and they’ve got a different explanation:Last month, when coal execs read the report linking birth defects to mountaintop removal mining, they weren’t exactly thrilled. One rebuttal, penned by four attorneys with the firm Crowell & Moring, which represents the National Mining Association, accused the study’s authors of using cherry-picked and misleading data. But that apparently wasn’t convincing enough, so they went a step further and employed a discredited stereotype about inbreeding in West Virginia. ...

Democrat Janice Hahn Defeats Tea-Party Candidate in California Congressional Race

Veteran city councilwoman Janice Hahn, a Democrat whose brother James once served as Los Angeles mayor, won a special election held on Tuesday for the California congressional seat vacated by Jane Harman, a Democrat who recently left Congress to become the president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Hahn defeated Craig Huey, a tea-party-affiliated Republican, as well as that guy who made the crazy ad about Koreans. In other news, Huey's a quitter: With results showing "an apparently insurmountable lead" for Hahn, Huey conceded the election shortly before midnight. [Caucus/NYT, Reuters]

How Can We Not Love Obama? (VOMIT! Stephen Marche wants to bend over a coffee table for Obama)

Before the fall brings us down, before the election season begins in earnest with all its nastiness and vulgarity, before the next batch of stupid scandals and gaffes, before Sarah Palin tries to convert her movie into reality and Joe Biden resumes his imitation of an embarrassing uncle and Newt and Callista Gingrich [FIG.1] creep us all out, can we just enjoy Obama for a moment? Before the policy choices have to be weighed and the hard decisions have to be made, can we just take a month or two to contemplate him the way we might contemplate a painting by Vermeer or a guitar lick by the early-seventies Rolling Stones or a Peyton Manning pass or any other astounding, ecstatic human ...

President Obama, time for some hot cocoa and a nap

He is just a lovable Bassett Hound who would like nothing better than to ignore his job responsibilities, curl up by a warm fire with some milk in the Oval Office, and take a nice long nap while others do real work. That was the unfair description of presidential contender Fred Thompson in 2007 (Bill Maher on Hardball with Chris Matthews). There were no cries of bigotry at the time, since lack of motivation has nothing to do with race. This is brought up to inoculate against the inevitably boring charges of racism by the left when any conservative accurately describes Barack Obama. President Obama takes brief interludes from playing golf and record fundraising to hold a Milli-Vanillion ...

Wiccan Woman Charged With Murder, Stabbed Victim With Ceremonial Knife, Say Cops

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (CBS/AP) Police say a self-described witch, who invited a man to join her in a Wiccan celebration of spring, stabbed the man multiple times with a ceremonial knife, killing him. They say she then tried to make it look like self defense. Police say that Angela Sanford invited Joel Leyva to join her in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains to celebrate Beltane, a Wiccan celebration of spring. They say she then lured him to a spot off a popular hiking trail and stabbed him approximately 13 times in the head and torso with a ceremonial knife. But Sanford says that Leyva first attacked her, tying her up with her rope belt and threatening her with the knife. She says she was ...

USDA Sees More Corn To China

The U.S. Department of Agriculture raised its estimates for corn exports to China fourfold, another nod to the country's rising demand in a market under strain. In addition, the amount of the grain used to make ethanol is expected to eclipse its use in animal feed in the U.S. for the first time ever. China is now forecast to import 2 million metric tons of U.S. corn in the next marketing year, which begins on Sept. 1, compared to the previous projection of 500,000 tons. Corn prices breached $7 a bushel in intraday trading before paring some gains. Nonethless, futures ended higher for the fourth straight day, with the most actively traded contract, for December delivery, closing 4% ...

House Republicans Fail To Save 30-Cent Light Bulbs From Extinction
Post Date: 2011-07-12 20:47:48 by Brian S

House Republicans Tuesday failed to overturn energy-efficiency standards that would have allowed Americans to continue buying cheap but inefficient incandescent light bulbs next year. Republicans had argued during debates Monday that the lighting-efficiency standards approved on a bipartisan basis in 2007 amounted to excess government control over Americans' lives. “We should let the marketplace decide,” Rep. Joe Barton (R) of Texas, the new bill's sponsor, said in a floor debate Monday. “We should repeal this de facto ban, and we should let people decide if they want to buy a $6 light bulb or a 39-cent light bulb.” Traditional incandescent bulbs cost about ...

Engaging with a liberal about 'fairness' By Neal Boortz If you try engaging in a conversation about taxes with a liberal, you can expect for your conversation to last less than one minute. This is because the only argument that liberals have about raising taxes is fairness. Forgive me for my abject ignorance, but I just can’t shake this idea that the purpose of taxation is to raise the revenue that is needed to fund the essential and constitutionally appropriate functions of government. The left goes further – much further – with this. They view the power to tax – the power to seize property from an individual citizen at the point of a gun – as the power ...

Black America vs. Obama?

"The Disappearing Black Middle Class" ran the headline over the Chicago Sun-Times story. And the statistics from the Economic Policy Institute were indeed sobering. In 2007, best year of the Bush era, white households had a median net worth of $134,280, compared with $13,450 for black households. By 2009, the median net worth for white households had fallen 24 percent to $97,860. For black households, it had plummeted 83 percent to $2,170, a near wipeout. As Algernon Austin of EPI's Program on Race, Ethnicity and the Economy put it, "In 2009, for every dollar of wealth the average white household had, black households had two cents." One explanation for this ...

GOP Senate Leader McConnell Suddenly Proposes Giving Obama New Powers To Raise Debt Limit
Post Date: 2011-07-12 17:16:14 by Brian S

WASHINGTON — With compromise talks at a vituperative standstill, Senate Republicans unexpectedly offered Tuesday to hand President Barack Obama new powers to avert the first-ever government default threatened for Aug. 2. Under a proposal outlined by Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Obama could request increases of up to $2.4 trillion in the government's borrowing authority in three separate installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size. The debt limit increases would take effect unless blocked by Congress under special rules that would require speedy action — and even then Obama could exercise his authority to veto such ...

Cantor-Boehner Rivalry, Loafers Hold Up a Debt Deal

A long rumored rivalry between the two top Republicans seems to be causing problems at the negotiating table while the president tries to hammer out a debt reduction deal before the August 2 deadline. Speaker of the House John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor are on opposing sides of the idealogical coin when it comes to debt reduction, and sartorial choices, reports the Los Angeles Times' Lisa Mascaro and Kathleen Hennessey. Boehner was praised for his early efforts to strike a major deal with the Obama administration that would trim spending from social programs like Medicare and Social Security, but would also close tax loopholes for upper-class Americans. Cantor has hardly ...

There are about 20 billion dollars of Social Security checks that have to go out the day after the government is supposed to go into default. Michelle Obama's 1,556-Calorie Lunch RaisesEyebrows WASHINGTON - First Lady Michelle Obama may have temporarily forgotten the lessons of her own anti-obesity campaign when she indulged in a sinfully caloric lunch Monday at a popular new hamburger restaurant. A Washington Post reporter said the first lady ordered a cheeseburger, french fries, chocolate shake and Diet Coke at Shake Shack -- a trendy hamburger spot that recently opened an outpost in Washington's Dupont Circle. Based on nutritional information on the restaurant's website, the meal added up to a scale-tipping 1,556 calories. Obama has made the fight against childhood-obesity a central focus of her White House ...

Fan Who Caught Jeter's 3,000th Hit May Owe IRS Thousands

The tax man may be on the hunt for the super fan who caught Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit. Christian Lopez, 23, recovered the prized ball his father fumbled after The Captain hammered it into their section of the stands in the third inning of the Yankees' win over Tampa Bay on Saturday. The Verizon salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., gave the ball back to Jeter, whom he called an "icon," and the Yankees lavished a slew of prizes, including luxury box seats for every remaining home game this season and post-season and some signed memorabilia. Now the IRS wants a piece. The prizes Lopez received are estimated to be worth more than $32,000 -- and, like game show contestants, ...

News Corp May Be At Risk For U.S. Probe Over Bribery

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp could face probes by U.S. authorities for possibly violating bribery laws, compounding the media mogul's problems after a phone-hacking scandal in Britain. The Obama administration has significantly stepped up enforcement of anti-bribery laws in the last two years, winning big settlements from the likes of Daimler AG and BAE Systems Plc by focusing on bribes they paid to foreign officials to win lucrative contracts. Bribes for business have represented the bulk of these anti-bribery cases brought by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is unclear whether U.S. authorities would use scarce ...

I cannot characterize your legal argument until you make one. I'm not making a legal argument. I am making a common sense one which, I believe, properly identifies your problem in responding to it. I have no idea what people do with duct tape where YOU live but where I live and on my several dozen trips to FL, I have yet to see people walking around with it wrapped around their faces. I will admit that I have seen windows, car bumpers and even trailer hitch fashioned with duct tape, but I have yet to see a human face so fashioned. A jury is to reach a conclusion based upon the evidence presented. It's given the evidence and then it's given scenarios under which that evidence points ...

Diners urged to eat invasive sea life

A new approach to containing invasive aquatic species is gaining favor: Eating them. From the lionfish ravaging reefs off Florida to the Asian carp advancing toward the Great Lakes, exotic creatures are devouring and outcompeting native ones, disrupting ecosystems. "Humans are the most ubiquitous predators on earth," Philip Kramer, director of the Caribbean program for the Nature Conservancy, told The New York Times. "Instead of eating something like shark fin soup, why not eat a species that is causing harm, and with your meal make a positive contribution?" "We think there could be a real market," said Wenonah Hauter of Food and Water Watch, whose Smart ...

New research has shown that feral, untrained pigeons can recognise individual people and are not fooled by a change of clothes. Researchers, who will be presenting their work at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Glasgow on Sunday the 3rd of July, have shown that urban pigeons that have never been caught or handled can recognise individuals, probably by using facial characteristics. Although pigeons have shown remarkable feats of perception when given training in the lab this is the first research showing similar abilities in untrained feral pigeons. In a park in Paris city centre, pigeons were fed by two researchers, of similar build and skin colour, wearing ...

Freedom: As South Sudan joyfully celebrated its independence from Sudan, President Obama hailed it as the fruit of partnership, togetherness, hope and unity. South Sudanese, however, hailed President Bush. Proudly wearing the black cowboy hat given to him by President Bush, South Sudan's new president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, couldn't have made a stronger statement about who made his country's independence possible after 50 years of warfare. "It was George Bush and the Christian fundamentalists who heard the cry of South Sudan," affirmed a South Sudanese man quoted by the Los Angeles Times. But to hear the White House — in its official recognition of the new ...

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Controversial 'Ground Zero Mosque'

NEW YORK -- A judge in New York has dismissed a lawsuit that tried to block an Islamic community center from opening near the World Trade Center site. Timothy Brown had sought to reverse a decision by the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission denying landmark status to a 150-year-old building that developers want to demolish to make room for the Park 51 community center, which will include a mosque. In Friday's decision, State Supreme Court Justice Paul G. Feinman wrote that Brown lacked any special legal standing on the fate of the building. Adam Leitman Bailey, a lawyer for the center's developer, told the Times the judge's decision was "a victory for ...

CREW Calls for Congressional Investigation into News Corp.

Washington, D.C. –Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) called on the House and Senate to investigate whether journalists working for Rupert Murdoch’s News International (NI), owned by News Corp., have hacked into the voicemail of Americans. Despite claims by NI executives that the phone hacking scandal enveloping Murdoch and his media empire was confined to the now-defunct News of the World, new evidence shows other Murdoch papers used the same tactics. Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was repeatedly targeted for more than a decade by other Murdoch publications. Further, a former New York City police officer claims he was offered money by ...

What Happened to the Jobs? So How's That Stimulus Thing Working Out?

The US jobs report came out this morning, and it was simply dismal. This week we look at not only the jobs report but also "what-if" proffers for the US and global economies. There's a lot to cover, so let's jump in. First, there were only 18,000 jobs created in June, the lowest since September 2010. While private employment rose by 57,000, government workers dropped by 39,000, continuing a trend as governments at all levels work to cut their budgets. Long-time readers know I think it is important to look at the direction of the revisions, and we got no help. May was revised down by 29,000 jobs and April a further down 15,000. I saw some headlines and talking heads in ...
