What 'Gang of Six' plan would do ($4 trillion reduction)
Post Date: 2011-07-19 19:47:32 by go65

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- It's hardly a done deal. And there's absolutely no guarantee the no-taxes- ever conservatives in the House will go for it. But a debt-reduction framework put forward on Tuesday by the bipartisan Gang of Six in the Senate injected new hope that the ongoing stalemate in the debt ceiling negotiations might be broken. Before reviewing the specifics of the plan, President Obama gave it an early nod of approval. "The framework is broadly consistent with what we've been working on here in the White House and with the presentations that I've made to the leadership when they've come over here," he told reporters. The Gang of Six plan got a ...

One Obama Presser, 36 Obama Lies and Deceptions By Charlie P Brannan Obama held a press conference last Friday, July 15 which turned out to be a purely partisan effort to increase taxes and increase the American debt. His speech and the answers he gave to cherry picked questions from the press was fundamentally dishonest: in all I counted three dozen lies, deceptions and misleading statements.z88; Deception 1. "make sure that the United States does not default on our obligations, and that the full faith and credit of the United States is preserved." There is zero risk of a default to the creditors of US debt. The federal government takes in about $170 billion each month in ...

Stocks, Treasuries Rally on Earnings, Deficit Plan

Stocks surged, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index to its biggest gain in four months, and Treasuries rallied amid optimism lawmakers were moving closer to a deal that would cut the U.S. budget deficit and avoid default. Oil helped lead gains in commodities and the dollar fell. The S&P 500 jumped 1.6 percent to 1,326.73 at 4 p.m. in New York, its biggest gain since March 3. The S&P GSCI Index of 24 commodities advanced 1 percent as oil surged 1.6 percent to $97.50 a barrel. Ten-year Treasury note yields lost six basis points to 2.87 percent and the Dollar Index, a gauge of the currency against six major peers, slipped 0.4 percent. Stocks added to an early advance and ...

President Obama Tops GOP On Helping Middle Class; Also Has Edge On Small Business
Post Date: 2011-07-19 16:56:09 by Brian S

By Jon Cohen When it comes to protecting the economic interests of the middle class, President Obama has a decisive advantage over congressional Republicans, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The president also has a double-digit lead when it comes to caring more about people’s own family financial interests and edges out the GOP on helping small businesses, which has been a flash point in the high-profile, big-stakes contest over debt and deficits. Obama’s advantages over the GOP in these areas emerge despite an overall approval rating — 47 percent — near the lowest of his presidency in Post-ABC polling. As before, more Americans “strongly ...

Photo credit: WSOC (July 18, 2011) An electronic DOT road sign was apparently hacked when a displayed message read "Impeach Obama." DOT officials told WSOC they had not heard of the display when first contacted on Sunday night, but sent an engineer to correct the sign afterward. The sign, which was located at the intersection of Unionville-Indian Trail and Ridge roads in Union County, was displayed for an unknown amount of time over the weekend and corrected later Sunday evening. Several drivers stopped to take pictures of the message.Electronic road signs were also hacked earlier this year in Rock Hill, S.C. Previously-hacked signs warned of zombies, hunters and tanks in the ...

EXILED ALERT! / JULY 18, 2011 FOC THE RATS! BRING BACK IKE’S TAX RATE ON THE RICH By Mark Ames The eXiled has set up an emergency “deficit crisis” website calling on America to restore President Eisenhower’s top tax rate on the wealthiest 0.1% Americans: RATFOCR (Real Americans for Tax Reform (RAT) & The Foundation On Constitutional Reforms (FOCR) are teaming up for RATFOCR). Everyone agrees that the Golden Age for America’s middle-class was under President Eisenhower, when the top tax rate reached 91% for the wealthiest Americans. That’s 91%, folks. And look at how the economy performed: Whoa, what’s this? So the top tax rate was 91%, and yet ...

Private-Public Partnerships to Mobilize $100 Billion for New Roads, Airports, and Railroads With the nation facing a critical shortfall in infrastructure funding, Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today announced legislation to mobilize $100 billion in private investment to build new roads, airports, and railroads. During a bipartisan transportation summit at Union League Club that included a message from Mayor Daley, civic leaders and transportation experts, Kirk presented the draft Lincoln Legacy Infrastructure Development Act to give new life to President Abraham Lincoln's economic legacy by building new roads, airports, and railroads using public-private partnerships without new federal ...

Newborn Wildlife Abandoned Because of Heat, Drought

This deer led her fawn to water in Susan Halford's backyard in Hudson Oaks, but that's not always the case. The extreme heat and persistent drought seen in much of Texas is taking its toll on wildlife, with deer, birds and other animals abandoning or unable to feed their young. Pregnant does are having problems carrying fawns to term, and most of them born prematurely aren't surviving, according to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Other does are abandoning their newborns because drought-induced malnutrition has robbed them of their ability to produce milk. Abandoned fawns found all over the Panhandle and South Plains have been brought to the South Plains Wildlife ...

Safe to say the Wall Street Journal’s defiant editorial page defense of News Corp. in the growing phone hacking scandal did not convince anyone in the liberal blogosphere or the Journal diaspora. The scathing editorial, which attacks the Guardian, the New York Times, ProPublica and politicians who have called for investigations into News Corp., drew outrage from both inside the Journal newsroom – anonymously, of course – and from former Journal reporters. “(The) WSJ Editorial is sad,” wrote Sarah Ellison, former Journal reporter and author of “War at the Wall Street Journal,” on Twitter. “I’ve always defended the Edit page, but now It’s ...

These aren't exactly numbers to cheer about, but a new CBS poll shows President Obama is handily winning the least-terrible award from voters following the debt ceiling debate: President Obama earned the most generous approval ratings for his handling of the weeks-old negotiations, but still more people said they disapproved (48 percent) than approved (43 percent) of what he has done and said ...Approval drops to 31 percent for the Democrats in Congress, and only 21 percent of the people surveyed said they approved of Republicans' handling of the negotiations, while 71 percent disapprove ... Republican Representative Paul Ryan Republicans’ Budget Balance Plan Lacks Details

Congressional Republicans are clear in their demand for a constitutional amendment forcing the government to balance its budget. What they’re not offering is clarity on how to get there. It’s politically popular to line up behind such an amendment; laying out specific cuts is less appealing. Almost all Republicans and some Democrats will vote to alter the Constitution when the issue comes up as early as this week. Almost none, including a leading co-sponsor of the Senate measure, Orrin Hatch, and Bill Flores of Texas, a co-sponsor of the House measure, say how they’d slash Medicare, eliminate federal programs or shrink education, law enforcement or national defense. ...

Coburn to unveil $9T deficit-reduction plan

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said Sunday the federal government can save $1 trillion though tax reform, a proposal that will put him at odds with some GOP colleagues. Coburn plans to unveil a $9 trillion deficit-reduction package Monday that would give lawmakers a menu of policy options to reduce the deficit. Coburn has suggested $1 trillion in savings could come from eliminating special tax breaks, such as the tax subsidy for ethanol, which he has fought to end. “We can increase revenues by adjusting the tax code and lowering it,” Coburn said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday morning. “We can save over $1 trillion doing Click for Full Text!

Feds pay for study of gay men’s penis sizes

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) subsidized a study attempting to find out if a gay man’s penis size has any correlation with his sexual health. The research, titled “The Association between Penis Size and Sexual Health among Men Who Have Sex with Men,” began in 2006 and surveyed 1,065 gay men. Among its key findings: Those gay men who felt they had small or inadequate penis sizes were more likely to become “bottoms,” or anal receptive, while gay men with larger penises were more likely to identify themselves as “tops,” or anal insertive. Another discovery from the research: men with smaller penises were more likely to be psychologically troubled ...

Record Heat Moving East

Much of middle America baked in a heat wave Sunday, with little respite in sight for Monday as temperatures and humidity are expected to make it feel warmer than 100 degrees Fahrenheit through much of this week. Excessive heat warnings have been declared by the National Weather Service in at least 14 states, most of those in the upper Midwest. Excessive heat watches were in place in Indiana and Kentucky, with heat advisories (the least imminent of the three) in effect for four other states. Several daily temperature records were broken Sunday -- from Alpena, Michigan, south to Miami, Florida. "This is the hottest it's been for the longest period of time," said Emily McNamara ...

Obama's travels favor 2012 'swing' states

Obama travels overwhelmingly to Democratic or "swing" states when he leaves the Washington metropolitan area for events. Obama has skipped 10 states entirely — nine of them solidly Republican. The other, tiny Vermont, is solidly Democratic and has received just two presidential visits in 35 years. Only in May did Obama visit Kentucky and Tennessee for the first time. White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest says policy, geography and logistics play greater roles in choosing sites for Obama to visit than politics. Click for Full Text!

Nearly half of Obama’s $86M traceable to bundlers

The campaign fundraising efforts of President Obama raised $86 million in the past three months from 500,000 people — but at least $35 million of it can be traced to just 244 well-connected supporters who collected contributions from wealthy friends. And the dramatic reach is, in part, a testament to the power of personal relationships, among the moneyed elite as with the population at large: The mathematics of the ranges collected by the bundlers and the number of large donations given suggest that nearly every maximum donation came after personal contact with one of the 244 emissaries who received credit for shepherding it. But the list, which was voluntarily disclosed by Mr. Obama ...

Epic traffic fears disappear as 405 freeway reopens in Los Angeles

The event that many feared would be the "Carmageddon" of epic traffic jams cruised calmly to a finish Sunday, with bridge work on the Los Angeles roadway completed nearly a full day ahead of schedule and officials reopening a 10-mile stretch of the busy freeway. Drivers honked their horns and waved from car windows as traffic started moving in all 10 lanes of Interstate 405 just after noon for the first time since being shut down at midnight Friday. There were no major problems since the freeway was closed, and the biggest worry of all — that the work would spill into the area's always rough Monday morning commute, was set aside. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa praised ...

Republicans Push US Debt Crisis To Brink Of Ruinous Default
Post Date: 2011-07-17 18:31:21 by Brian S

A week of high brinkmanship on Capitol Hill opened today with neither side in the impasse over the US debt ceiling prepared to budge and with the US just days away from a potentially catastrophic default. The White House called a temporary cessation of hostilities, with meetings that have been going on almost solidly for more than a week suspended over the weekend to allow tempers to cool. But despite the hiatus, there was no sign from either the Republicans or Democrats that they were preparing to compromise. In interviews on the Sunday political shows, the White House budget director, Jack Lew, made clear that tax rises for the rich would have to be on the table – a demand that the ...

Constituents Bending Ears Of Lawmakers As Debt Ceiling Debate Raises Worries About Default

For Rep. Tim Scott the debt ceiling is not only the top issue voters in his South Carolina district want to talk about these days, it seems to be the only issue. The office of the freshman Republican has been logging dozens of calls and emails every day about the debt ceiling, and it's the No. 1 topic of discussion at town hall-style meetings with voters. "Tons of phone calls, lots of emails, and the closer we get to Aug. 2, the more we're hearing," Scott said. With the deadline looming to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, voters are tuning in, worried by the prospect of a financial meltdown if the nation defaults and concerned that elected officials in Washington ...

(Reuters) - High temperatures and humidity were expected to bake a large swath of the United States again on Sunday and send afternoon heat indexes in dozens of cities to dangerous levels, where forecasters predicted they would remain through much of the coming week.
