Seen any walnuts in your medicine cabinet lately? According to the Food and Drug Administration, that is precisely where you should find them. Because Diamond Foods made truthful claims about the health benefits of consuming walnuts that the FDA didnt approve, it sent the company a letter declaring, Your walnut products are drugs and new drugs at that and, therefore, they may not legally be marketed

OSLO, Norway (AP) -- A homegrown terrorist set off an explosion that ripped open buildings in the heart of Norway's government Friday, then went to a summer camp dressed as a police officer and gunned down youths as they ran and even swam for their lives, police said Friday. The attacks killed at least 16 people in this peaceful nation's worst violence since World War II. A police official said the 32-year-old ethnic Norwegian suspect arrested at the camp on Utoya island appears to have acted alone in both attacks, and that "it seems like that this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because ...

ABC News Devin Dwyer (@devindwyer) reports: One year after President Obama signed into law the most sweeping overhaul of the U.S. financial system since the Great Depression, support for his re-election among some Wall Street elites remains strong. Eighty wealthy and well-connected volunteer fundraisers, or bundlers, from the financial sector have together raised at least $11.8 million for Obamas re-election campaign, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission data by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan government watchdog. Individuals working in finance, insurance or real estate markets contributed roughly one-third of all money raised by Obamas 244 ...

Speaker John Boehner told a closed House Republican meeting Friday morning that the chamber needs to pass legislation to lift the nations debt ceiling by Wednesday, although he warned that no agreement has been reached with the White House yet. A day after breathless news reports that a deal was imminent, the Ohio Republican jokingly told his conference that he had reached a sweeping agreement with President Barack Obama to slash trillions of dollars in government spending. Im just kidding, Boehner then added, drawing a laugh from rank-and-file Republicans, according to those in the room. But Boehner was not kidding about the serious deadline for raising the debt ...

The U.S. Justice Department is preparing subpoenas as part of preliminary investigations into News Corp. relating to alleged foreign bribery and alleged hacking of voicemail of Sept. 11 victims, according to a government official. The issuance of such subpoenas, which would broadly seek relevant information from the company, requires approval by senior Justice Department leadership, which hasn't yet happened, the person said. The issuance of subpoenas would represent an escalation of scrutiny on the New York-based media company. While the company has sought to isolate the legal problems in the U.K., it has been bracing for increased scrutiny from both the Justice Department and the ...

The Obama White House and House Speaker John Boehner are now thisclose to reaching a grand bargain deal. That framework includes spending cuts, plus entitlement changes and increased tax revenues (as part of a tax overhaul) that would come later. But there are two big hurdles left: 1) on the substance, and 2) on soothing egos. On the substance, the most contentious matter is how you trigger the provisions to guarantee completing tax and entitlement reform. The Democrats have offered a trigger of letting the Bush tax cuts expire for those making $250,000 or more. Republicans, meanwhile, have countered that if those Bush tax cuts are hanging in the balance, theyd ...

There's a very curious thing going on in our national polling right now: voters are down on Barack Obama and it's looking more likely that there could be a Republican in the White House in 2013. But they're also way down on the Republicans in Congress and Democrats have now led on 11 consecutive PPP generic House ballot polls dating back to February. Could Democrats gain a lot of seats in the House, possibly even a majority, while simultaneously voting out Barack Obama? It would certainly run counter to all historical precedent but these are weird times politically. PPP's newest national poll finds that Americans think even less of the new Republican majority in the House ...

As the clock ticks down to the Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling, Big Business is beginning to panic. In its latest call for a deal, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce executive vice president for government affairs Bruce Josten wrote in a blog post today that "default is not an option." "Failure to raise the debt ceiling would have calamitous results," Josten wrote. "It would halt government operations, make our debt and deficit situation worse, debase the value of the dollar and threaten its status as the world's reserve currency, and hamper U.S. growth and job creation." Josten went on to warn of other consequences, like rising interest rates for ...

House Republicans were cautioned Thursday in a closed door meeting with credit rating agency officials that a death spiral in the bond market was one of the possible outcomes in the event of default. One official warned of a worst-case scenario in which a default on the nations credit could result in a rapid drop in bond values, sparking chaos in the markets a dramatic warning as Washington worked on a possible deal on deficit reduction and an increase in the debt limit. Members who attended the meeting later countered that the tone of the discussion was not nearly as apocalyptic as the phrase initially made it sound. According to sources inside the room, the ...

(07-21) 09:18 PDT Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio voters will have the chance this November to decide whether the state's contentious new collective bargaining law should be repealed. The state's elections chief said Thursday that opponents had gathered enough valid signatures to put the question before voters. The measure is now suspended from taking effect until voters have their say. The law signed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich in late March bans public employee strikes and restricts collective bargaining rights for more than 350,000 teachers, police officers and other public workers. While unions can continue to negotiate wages, they cannot bargain on health care, sick time or pension ...

The 70-Million-Check Constituency By Michael Filozof Obama and the left have a massive constituency of tens of millions who do not comprehend the true meaning of money, only caring that the government check is in the mail. In an interview with CBS anchor Scott Pelley last week, President Obama was asked if he could guarantee that Social Security checks would go out in August if House Republicans refused to raise the national debt ceiling. Obama replied, "Well, this is not just a matter of Social Security checks. These are veterans' checks; these are folks on disability and their checks. There are about 70 million checks that go out... I cannot guarantee that those checks go ...
Bipartisan Tax Plan Targets Breaks For Mortgage Interest, Health Insurance, Charitable Gifts Post Date: 2011-07-20 18:59:51 by Brian S

A new bipartisan plan to reduce government borrowing would target some of the most cherished tax breaks enjoyed by millions of families _ those promoting health insurance, home ownership, charitable giving and retirement savings _ in exchange for lowering overall tax rates for everyone. Many taxpayers would face higher taxes _ a total of at least $1.2 trillion over the next decade, and perhaps more. The details and impact of the plan, released this week by the bipartisan "Gang of Six" senators, emerged as President Barack Obama called congressional leaders to the White House on Wednesday to determine, in separate meetings, their bottom line for extending the nation's debt ...

HOUSTON (AP) In the geeky world of space engineering, this large, high-ceilinged room is close to holy. Inside, people speak in hushed tones and observe time-honored traditions. The place is Mission Control. Beginning moments after launch, flight controllers here choreograph everything astronauts do, from waking up and eating to walking in space. "That building, we think of it as a cathedral of spaceflight," said John McCullough, head of NASA's flight director office. Flight controllers are "the keepers and enforcers of traditions" that date back to the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo days. "You just feel the ghosts when you are in that room," ...
Anger At Government Highest In 19 Years: Poll Post Date: 2011-07-20 11:29:24 by Brian S

Dissatisfaction and anger with the federal government are at a nearly 20-year high, according to the results of a new ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday. When asked how they felt about the federal government, 80 percent of poll respondents said that they felt dissatisfied or even angry about the work the government is doing. The last time such a peak of ill will was felt was during 1992's economic slump, under President George Bush's leadership. The public's slumping opinion of the country's political class can be actively attributed to the negotiations surrounding the debt ceiling: The dissatisfaction numbers rocketed up 11 points between this month and ...

Bagdasarian told investigators he was drunk at the time. A divided panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that conviction Tuesday, saying ...
