A homeless man jumped the White House fence Tuesday triggering a security alert, but was quickly stopped by the US Secret Service and arrested. Two agents swiftly approached the man with their rifles drawn at him as he lay face down on the North Lawn of the White House. The suspect, identified by the Secret Service as 41-year-old homeless man James Dirk Crudup, was swiftly arrested and taken to a Washington police station "where he will be charged with unlawful entry," Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan told AFP. He was also to be charged with contempt of court, Donovan said, apparently for violating a stay away order from the White House. Several police vehicles were ...

Sen. Lieberman: Cut Social Security To Prevent Cuts To Defense Budget
Post Date: 2011-08-02 17:04:01 by Brian S

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) announced on the Senate floor Tuesday that he was working on a bipartisan proposal to reform Social Security. He said reforming entitlement programs like Social Security was necessary to prevent cuts to the defense budget. “Bottom line, we can’t protect these entitlements and also have the national defense we need to protect us in a dangerous world, while we’re at war with Islamist extremists who attacked us on 9/11 and will be for a long time to come,” he said. Lieberman and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) previously introduced legislation that would have gradually moved the eligibility age for Social Security up by two years. Watch video, clipped ...

Pamela Geller And Robert Spencer Fundraise On Norway Attack

As a writer, it sure sucks when someone murders a bunch of people based on your ideas. (I mean, I assume that sucks. Weirdly, it's never happened to me.) So you can understand why right-wing anti-Islam bloggers are all being kind of defensive, these days. Anders Breivik, the anti-Islam terrorist who killed 77 people in Norway on July 22, read a lot of American anti-Islam bloggers, many of whom he cited in his lengthy manifesto. Breivik's favorites included Robert Spencer, a self-proclaimed expert on Islam whose "Jihad Watch" blog was quoted and cited in Breivik's manifesto, and Spencer's ally and collaborator Pam Geller, whose "Atlas Shrugs" was ...

Government Proposes Regulations On Ammonium Nitrate

Washington, DC - More than 16 years after a bomb ripped apart the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, the government says it will soon issue a proposal calling for the regulation of the main ingredient used in the bombing -- ammonium nitrate. A proposal is expected to be published in the Federal Register today, the Associated Press reports. It would likely regulate the purchase, sale or transfer of the chemical when at least 25 pounds of it is purchased or transferred. Those buying, selling or transferring the chemical would be required to register with the government to be screened against terror watch lists. A four-thousand pound ammonium nitrate fertilizer bomb was ...

Was he a target? FBI files have revealed a threat was made against late Senator Ted Kennedy by the son of mobster Al Capone Intercepted: Albert ...

Obama shellacked again

“Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. The very idea of losing is hateful to an American.” — Gen. George Patton America is a center-right nation but we will, under the right conditions, vote for a liberal — even an extreme liberal. We might vote for a lush, a Lothario, perhaps even a lunatic. But there is one thing Americans will not abide: A loser. That’s the one “L” word President Barack Obama cannot overcome. And he’s dangerously close to a full-on “L7” face plant. Forget all the talk about the Tea Party’s big win on the debt ceiling debate (which it was, by the way). Focus instead on the fact that, as a ...

How Obama, Tea Party are alike

The two most spectacular political phenomena of recent years are Barack Obama and the Tea Party movement. Yet each managed the fight over raising the national debt limit in ways that left their reputations tarnished. Who came out worse in the eyes of the voters remains to be seen. President Obama, whose political instincts seemed unerring in 2008, appeared to miss the significance of the 2010 election upheaval and started the year as if nothing had changed by pushing for ever more spending. When the debt ceiling issue first came up, he called for a “clean” extension of the limit, meaning no spending restraint. He came around to spending cuts only when it became apparent that the ...

Must read: How the SEALs got Bin Laden

An instant classic from the New Yorker, far too valuable to be buried in a Headlines item this morning. Take 10 minutes to wash down the bitterness of the debt-ceiling fiasco with a moment of true American greatness. My favorite part? The SEALs’ Pakistani-American translator, “Ahmed,” posing as a local cop and shooing Bin Laden’s neighbors away as they came by to ask what the ruckus was about. The moment of truth: Three SEALs shuttled past Khalid’s body and blew open another metal cage, which obstructed the staircase leading to the third floor. Bounding up the unlit stairs, they scanned the railed landing. On the top stair, the lead SEAL swivelled right; with his ...

A federal law enforcement official says the FBI is investigating whether the remains of a dead man in the Pacific Northwest are those of D.B. Cooper, who hijacked a passenger jet in 1971 and parachuted from the airliner with $200,000 in ransom. Cooper hasn't been found. The official says the FBI got a tip three months ago from a law enforcement source about a possible suspect. The official requested anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. FBI agents requested personal effects of the possible suspect, who died years ago of natural causes. The FBI is trying to find fingerprints or DNA on the effects to compare with items the hijacker left behind. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. ...

The horrible July heat wave, lasting weeks in some cities, the entire month in others, affected nearly 200 million people in the United States at some point. Preliminary data show that 2,712 high-temperature records were either tied or broken in July, compared with 1,444 last year, according to the NCDC. At least one weather station in all 50 states set or tied a daily high temperature record at some point during July. Two weather stations tied for the hottest temperature recorded during July. Coastal states could be lashed by the weekend if the storm moves into the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic. Monday morning, the system was about 250 miles east of Martinique. "This system has a high chance, 90 percent, of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, the center stated. "If the system becomes a tropical cyclone today tropical storm warnings would be issued for portions of the Northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands on very short notice." The Air Force, in response to an exclusive report published by Truthout earlier this week, has withdrawn materials used in a training session that relied upon passages from the New and Old Testament and a quote from an ex-Nazi SS officer to teach missile officers about the morals and ethics of launching nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Ethics and Nuclear Warfare training "has been taken out of the curriculum and is being reviewed," said David Smith, chief of public affairs of Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. "The commander reviewed it and decided we needed to have a good hard look at it and make sure it reflected views of modern ...

Sen. DeMint in driver's seat~Politician specific & focused on what he wants

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., leads other GOP senators June 29 in a call to bypass the holiday recess to stay in Washingtonand work on the debt crisis. WASHINGTON -- He calls himself Sen. Tea Party. That almost says it all about Sen. Jim DeMint's role on the nation's political scene in these nervous days of debt limit warfare and pre-election posturing. But unlike the fractious movement as a whole, DeMint is specific and focused on what change, exactly, he wants: passage - not just a vote - of a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. Without it, he says, no consideration should be given to raising the nation's borrowing limit. Even, he says, if the country runs out of ...

Researchers Expose Cunning Online Tracking Service That Can’t Be Dodged

Researchers at U.C. Berkeley have discovered that some of the net’s most popular sites are using a tracking service that can’t be evaded — even when users block cookies, turn off storage in Flash, or use browsers’ “incognito” functions. The service, called KISSmetrics, is used by sites to track the number of visitors, what the visitors do on the site, and where they come to the site from — and the company says it does a more comprehensive job than its competitors such as Google Analytics. But the researchers say the site is using sneaky techniques to prevent users from opting out of being tracked on popular sites, including the TV streaming site ...

FBI’s News Corp. 9/11 Probe Moves Forward

The FBI is in the initial stage of a probe of News Corp. (NWSA) as investigators evaluate whether U.S. charges can be brought over claims employees hacked into a rival’s website and sought access to phone records of victims of the 9/11 attacks, a person familiar with the matter said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will let Scotland Yard take the lead on a parallel investigation already under way in Britain, said two law-enforcement officials familiar with the matter. The bureau isn’t planning to mount an aggressive investigation into allegations that News Corp.’s payments to U.K. police officers a decade ago violated a U.S. overseas bribery law, said the officials, ...

Researchers Say Vulnerabilities Could Let Hackers Spring Prisoners From Cells

Vulnerabilities in electronic systems that control prison doors could allow hackers or others to spring prisoners from their jail cells, according to researchers. Some of the same vulnerabilities that the Stuxnet superworm used to sabotage centrifuges at a nuclear plant in Iran exist in the country’s top high-security prisons, according to security consultant and engineer John Strauchs, who plans to discuss the issue and demonstrate an exploit against the systems at the DefCon hacker conference next week in Las Vegas. Strauchs, who says he engineered or consulted on electronic security systems in more than 100 prisons, courthouses and police stations throughout the U.S. — ...

Senate Kills Latest House Debt Measure; House To Vote Down Reid's Deficit Plan Saturday
Post Date: 2011-07-29 20:31:02 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate has killed the latest effort by the House to raise the government's borrowing cap. Democrats and several Republicans killed the GOP measure by a 59-41 vote Friday night, just minutes after it arrived from the House. Democrats opposed the measure because it would require another painful debt-limit debate early next year. The move continues a standoff over the debt limit but could set the table for negotiations this weekend on compromise legislation that could pass the Democratic Senate and the GOP-controlled House before an Aug. 2 deadline to prevent a potentially disastrous default on U.S. obligations like interest payments and Social Security checks. ...

Is Obamacare the Source of Obama’s Approval Woes?

Is Obamacare the Source of Obama’s Approval Woes? 1:03 PM, Jul 25, 2011 • By JEFFREY H. ANDERSON As of today, President Obama’s approval rating is only 42 percent in Gallup, while Rasmussen’s Presidential Approval Index shows that only 23 percent of likely voters “strongly approve” of Obama’s performance as president, compared to 44 percent who “strongly disapprove” — matching the highest “strongly disapprove” tally in Rasmussen’s index since November. In other words, the debt ceiling debate doesn’t seem to be doing Obama any favors. But the long-term picture is even more telling. According to Gallup, President ...

Tropical Storm Don is expected to make landfall in Texas in about 18 hours and quickly lose strength, dissipating completely in two days, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Poor In America: Cable TV, Cell Phones, Video Games and More

In America we’ve been conditioned so that when we hear the term poverty it evokes feelings and images of destitution and hopelessness – people who are hungry, without clothes and homeless. There is no doubt that a certain segment of the population lives this way – roughly half of a percent of Americans (about one in every 200) experience homelessness in any given year. However, the majority of poor Americans are not as bad off as we may have been led to believe – at least in terms of everyday amenities. With a government social network that includes benefits like unemployment, food stamps, welfare, rental and mortgage assistance, and health care, the poor in America are ...
