S&P downgrades U.S. credit rating for first time Post Date: 2011-08-05 20:54:22 by Get Outta Dodge!

Standard & Poors announced Friday night that it has downgraded the sterling U.S. credit rating for the first time. The move came even though the Treasury Department said that it had found a math error in the firms calculations of deficit projections, according to a person familiar with the matter. S&P decided to lower the AAA rating, held by the United States for 70 years, to AA+ after a bipartisan debt deal signed into law this week failed to assuage concerns about the nations growing spending. Analysts have said a downgrade could increase the cost of borrowing for the U.S. government and lead to tens of billions of dollars in more interest costs per year. That ...
Why was there neither rhyme nor reason as to which dealerships of the Chrysler Corporation were to be closed? Post Date: 2011-08-05 19:23:01 by CZ82

Why was there neither rhyme nor reason as to which dealerships of the Chrysler Corporation were to be closed? Roll the clock back to the weeks just before Chrysler declared bankruptcy. Chrysler, like GM, was in dire financial straits and federal government "graciously" offered to "buy the company" and keep them out of bankruptcy and "save jobs." Chrysler was, in the words of Obama and his administration, "Too big to fail," same story with GM. The feds organized their "Automotive Task Force" to fix Chrysler and GM. Obama, in an act that is 100% unconstitutional, appointed a guy named Steve Rattner to be the White House's official Car ...

Obama mints pulled from college store Post Date: 2011-08-05 17:12:07 by CZ82

Obama mints pulled from college store Up until recently, students at the University of Tennessee could get their breath ready for date night with a box of mints stamped with Obamas visage. But the Obama mints were recently pulled because of a slogan printed on them. "This is change? Disappointmints" was stamped under Obamas face on the small tin. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that local legislator Joe Armstrong, a Knoxville Democrat, heard about the mints and spoke to the bookstore director who removed the product from the shelves. "If it was a book or something of that nature, fine, but that's sort of a discretionary product they have there. It ...
Kerry blasts GOP, media in debt deal Post Date: 2011-08-05 15:02:03 by Get Outta Dodge!

WASHINGTON Senator John F. Kerry said this morning that Congress was taken hostage by some House Republicans during the ferocious debt-limit debate that ended this week, and criticized the media for giving them a platform. Appearing on MSNBCs Morning Joe, the Massachusetts Democrat said in an implicit reference to Tea Party Republicans who resisted raising the debt limit as a group of people who are completely unaware or didnt care about the consequences of their actions. They were actually arguing for a default, which would have been even more catastrophic with respect to whats happening in Europe and whats ...
When the Voters Get Whacked Again Post Date: 2011-08-05 13:34:43 by Capitalist Eric

Promises to Save Us from Ourselves Yesterday, at opening bell, stocks paused for a moment and then barfed all over themselves. After that, they did it again
and again. When it was over the DOW had plunged 512 points and Wall Street had fully freaked out. Is this a sign of things to come or a fantastic opportunity to buy the dip? Well soon find out
But we wont dwell on it today. For we have bigger concerns on our mind than the stock market
like a fading economy. And the governments proclivity to do something remarkably stupid to try and fix it. Public faith in the governments ability to control the economy is declining. And if its not, it ...
Congress Ratifies Obama's Hitler Coup [1933 "Enabling Act" Copied] Post Date: 2011-08-05 13:23:22 by Capitalist Eric

REVERSE THIS TREASON NOW! Aug. 2With the fate of the U.S. republic hanging in the balance, 269 members of the House of Representatives, on Aug. 1, cast their votes for President Barack Obama's copy of Adolf Hitler's Enabling Act of 1933, thus ratifying a measure that will, if implemented, rip up the American Constitution. Today, the Senate followed suit with a vote of 74 to 26, and sent the bill to Obama, who immediately signed it into law. "This vote brings us that much closer to the imminent destruction of the United States," declared Lyndon LaRouche on the evening of Aug. 1. LaRouche is leading a major mobilization to stop Obama's coup. "The people who ...
Cantor Opposes Extending Unemployment Benefits: We Need To Stop ‘Pumping Up’ Jobless Americans Post Date: 2011-08-05 12:10:31 by Brian S

The unemployment rate inched downwards to 9.1 percent today, with private sector jobs increasing by 154,000. While a slight improvement, these better-than-expected figures provide little comfort to the 14 million Americans who are unemployed. 44.4 percent of the unemployed have been out of work for six months or more. For these Americans who are struggling to make ends meet, the federal unemployment benefits program provides much needed financial support. Every dollar the federal government spends in federal unemployment generates two dollars of economic growth. These benefits, however, are set to expire at the end of the year. In response to todays jobs report, House Majority ...
Unemployment Benefits at Risk Post Date: 2011-08-05 12:08:53 by Brian S

The debt ceiling agreement did little to help the millions of jobless Americans whose federal unemployment benefits are set to run out early next year. The unemployed had hoped that the debt ceiling deal would include an extension to file for federal unemployment benefits. But in the end, policymakers focused only on cutting federal spending. As it stands, most people laid off today will not be eligible to collect federal unemployment benefits after their state benefits run out. And those collecting federal benefits could find themselves cut off before receiving the full number of weeks for which they are now eligible. Here's how the system works: The jobless can collect up to 26 ...
Obama's Failed Presidency Post Date: 2011-08-05 11:10:34 by smokestack

There comes a time and a point in history which indelibly define a President. Oftentimes the event may not be of major import in the greater scheme of things but the management of it is of such prominence that the success or failure in the handling of the issue is permanently attached to the individual. Such a moment has happened to Barack Obama. His incompetence, inability to lead, prevarications, petulance and immaturity in the debt ceiling crisis have indelibly created an image of abject failure in the minds of a critical mass of people in the United States and around the globe. He will never be able to overcome the portrait that has been etched in too many mind Little does Barack Obama ...

The debate over raising the debt ceiling, which brought the nation to the brink of default, has sent disapproval of Congress to its highest level on record and left most Americans saying that creating jobs should now take priority over cutting spending, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll. A record 82 percent of Americans now disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job the most since The Times first began asking the question in 1977, and even more than after another political stalemate led to a shutdown of the federal government in 1995. snip The Republicans compromised too little, a majority of those polled said. All told, 72 percent disapproved of the way ...

Heat Waves Pushes Texas Power Grid Into Red Zone Post Date: 2011-08-04 20:39:34 by Brian S

(Reuters) - The Texas power grid operator has scrambled this week to meet soaring electricity demand in the face of a brutal heat wave, and residents of the second most populous U.S. state are one power plant shut-down away from rolling blackouts. Power demand for Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc, or ERCOT, which runs the power grid for most of the state, hit three consecutive records this week as Texans cranked up air conditioners to escape one of the hottest summers on record. The grid operator on Thursday cut power to some big industrial users, and businesses and households face a repeat of the rolling blackouts they faced in February, when a bitter cold snap interrupted ...
Analysis: Obama, Bernanke out of ammo to boost jobs, growth [They're Gonna' PRINT, Baby, PRINT!!!] Post Date: 2011-08-04 19:06:28 by Capitalist Eric

(Reuters) - The United States has a jobs problem and there's not a lot President Barack Obama or Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke can do about it. In the face of rising risks of a recession that could imperil his re-election chances next year, Democrat Obama wants Congress to extend a payroll tax cut and emergency unemployment benefits that are due to expire in December. But the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is emboldened by budget concessions it made Obama swallow to lift the country's debt limit this week and he has little political leverage to win significant fresh spending to aid growth. "Obama does not have much presidential persuasion left. He ...
Ohio Puts Repeal Of Kasich's Anti-Union Senate Bill 5 On The November Ballot Post Date: 2011-08-04 12:43:53 by Brian S

The five-member Ohio Ballot Board voted unanimously to present voters with a clear yes or no choice on Gov. John Kasichs (R) wildly unpopular anti-union bill he signed into law in March. Supporters of the law tried to turn the voter referendum on its head by submitting ballot language in which a yes vote would actually register rejection of the law a move that would be unprecedented in Ohios history. But the We Are Ohio coalition which collected over 1.3 million signatures to repeal the law prevailed. When voters go to the polls on Nov. 8 to vote on Issue 283;, the language will reflect the ...

The calls come at least once a week these days, with growing urgency: friends of the Republican presidential candidates, aides to the candidates, and often the candidates themselves, wondering if Al Hoffman Jr. might be ready to lend a hand. How are you doing? What are you feeling? What are you thinking? Mr. Hoffman, a Florida real estate developer who was a co-chairman of George W. Bushs presidential campaigns, said in describing the calls. But Mr. Hoffman, one of the Republican Partys most sought-after fund-raisers, remains unconvinced that he should tap into his extensive network of contacts to raise money for any of them. None of the candidates have ...
High-speed rail money on hold Post Date: 2011-08-04 01:13:40 by socalv8

New York state last month almost lost $450 million allocated for passenger rail improvements across the state. But an effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to redirect the federal money elsewhere was defeated. Still, the money won't be released, if it's still available, until the state Department of Transportation, CSX Corp. and Amtrak reach agreements on such issues as land and track leasing, dispatching trains and maintaining the right of way, service performance and other operating and management issues. The Federal Railroad Administration must then approve each agreement. Time may be a factor. Officials say privately that they wouldn't be surprised if there's ...

Judge allows American to sue Rumsfeld over torture Post Date: 2011-08-03 21:09:15 by Sebastian

A federal judge has ruled that former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld can be sued personally for damages by a former U.S. military contractor who says he was tortured during a nine-month imprisonment in Iraq. The lawsuit lays out a dramatic tale of the disappearance of the then-civilian contractor, an Army veteran in his 50s whose identity is being withheld from court filings for fear of retaliation. Attorneys for the man, who speaks five languages and worked as a translator for Marines collecting intelligence in Iraq, say he was preparing to come home to the United States on annual leave when he was abducted by the U.S. military and held without justification while his family knew ...
GOA Chief: Super Congress ‘Will Lead Us Into Dictatorship’ Post Date: 2011-08-03 13:51:50 by Capitalist Eric

Gun Owners of America chief Larry Pratt warns that the new Super Congress created by the debt deal will lead America into dictatorship, labeling the move a coup détat by the political class aimed at transforming the entire structure of government in the United States. Comparing the super committee to Platos council, Pratt pointed out that it would take just 34 Senate votes to sustain a bill put forward by the group, noting that it has been set up specifically to prevent lawmakers getting in the way of its agenda by necessitating a super majority to overturn anything introduced by the committee. The first act of the next Congress hopefully ...
Debt drama takes political toll on Obama Post Date: 2011-08-03 12:24:14 by calcon

Reporting from Washington Though he succeeded in staving off a historic default, President Obama emerges from the debt talks in a weakened political position with limited influence over a divided Congress. The protracted debate over the federal debt ceiling came to an official end Tuesday as the Senate, by a 74-26 vote, approved the compromise bill hammered out over the weekend. Obama signed it hours later. Administration officials concede the debate gave the public a look at government sausage-making at its worst. And White House officials also know that as president, Obama is the most visible symbol of a government that voters see as badly dysfunctional. The turmoil in ...

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Wednesday blamed "one or two people who wouldn't compromise" for the impasse in Congress that has led to a partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). LaHood, a Republican who served in the House, called in to C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" show to rip Congress for not passing an FAA reauthorization bill before recessing for the summer. LaHood did not specify the one or two people he was talking about, but praised Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for putting aside his state and ego to resolve the stalemate. He said Reid was willing to move a House-passed bill through the Senate even though it ...

Within the Fed, officials who skew toward concerns about unemployment believe that if overnight interest rates were at 3 percent, the central bank would not hesitate to deliver a big rate cut. Those officials are likely to advocate additional Fed support for a recovery at some risk of stalling. At the same time, others have been confident the recovery will accelerate and believe policy is loose enough. Bernanke made clear in recent appearances that despite high unemployment the Fed isnt ready to ease policy, in large part because inflation has climbed quickly this year, and a number of other officials have said the bar to further action is high. But reports that manufacturing grew ...

President Obama is feeling the fallout from the protracted debate over the national debt. More than half of Pennsylvania voters now disapprove of the way the president is handling his job, while in February, the majority supported him, according to a poll released Tuesday by Quinnipiac University. But the president is still more popular than either Republicans or Democrats in Congress, with 44 percent of voters saying he acted more responsibly during the debate than lawmakers did. Still, by a margin of 52 to 42 percent, voters say Obama does not deserve to be reelected. "Any good poll is a snapshot of public opinion, and this survey shows President Barack Obama at a low point just ...
