Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) yesterday jumped in the 2012 GOP presidential primary, saying that it is time to get America working again. I will work every day to make Washington, DC, as inconsequential in your lives as I can, and free our families, small businesses and states from a burdensome and costly federal government so they can create, innovate and succeed, he said. And Perry quickly picked up the endorsement of former Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX): Former senator and current banker Phil Gramm of Texas well-connected to big donors but controversial for his role in preventing tighter regulation of Wall Street told The Huffington Post yesterday that he is ...

Passing three pending free-trade deals remains a top priority for the White House and congressional leaders as competing interests nudge their way onto the September agenda. President Obama is vowing to provide a weekly list of new bills he wants Congress to consider, including a payroll tax cut and an extension of federal emergency unemployment benefits, while pressure rises to complete work on the long-delayed trade deals with Colombia, South Korea and Panama. "Over the coming weeks, I'm going to be putting out more proposals, week by week, that will help businesses hire and put people back to work," Obama said during a Thursday speech in Michigan. He called for a final ...

The investigation into 11 of the violent incidents on the opening night of the Wisconsin State Fair has resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old African-American who reportedly told investigators he targeted whites. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was asked on WLS Radios Roe and Roeper Show Friday if he thought the crimes warranted hate crime status, I think it is absolutely outrageous, it is a hate crime, and I would imagine the prosecutor will be very aggressive on this. There is no tolerance whether its white on black or black on white, there shouldnt be any tolerance in general for that kind of problems. West Allis police said Thursday the teen was arrested ...

As bad a stretch as President Obama has had of late -- and there's no denying it's been bad -- the recent debt-ceiling hike has managed to draw an already unpopular Congress to new depths, according to a series of new polls. Consider these findings: A CNN/Opinion Research poll shows just 14% of voters approve of Congress's job performance, while 84% disapprove -- both records. A CBS/New York Times poll has similar numbers -- 14% approve and 82% disapprove of Congress' job performance, the latter an all-time high. A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll puts Congress' approval even lower -- 10%. That's a drop from 20% in late June. Just 18% of ...

Obama and the Perry Miracle By Jeffrey Folks Liberals have let it be known that they intend to "kill" Romney -- or any other GOP candidate who poses a threat to Obama in the 2012 election. The attack on Romney at the Iowa state fair by hecklers pretending to be ordinary retirees is prelude to what we can expect. Obama's own team are hard at work as well. Recently, they've been trying to head off the challenge posed by Gov. Rick Perry, the most successful American governor in living memory. On Friday David Axelrod argued that Perry's record of job creation in Texas was not what it seemed. Yes, Texas has created more jobs over the last decade, while Perry has been ...
Moms Rally To Defend Raw Food Club After Federal Raid Post Date: 2011-08-13 21:30:02 by Brian S

Private food clubs and small producers of raw milk and cheese have witnessed all manner of regulatory and legal interference in recent years -- confiscation of raw milk deliveries, quarantining of raw milk, searches of dairies carried out by armed state and federal agents, shutdown of cheese plants. But last week's multi-agency assault on Rawesome Food Club in Venice, Calif., marked the first time individuals associated with a food club or a small farm had actually been thrown into jail, in this case charged with 13 felonies and misdemeanors, and held on high bail (requested between $60,000 and $130,000). The Los Angeles County district attorney issued a criminal complaint, growing out ...
Boy Scout, 12, Did ‘Everything Right’ To Survive Cold Night In Utah Backcountry Post Date: 2011-08-13 21:02:50 by Brian S

(08-13) 16:19 PDT (AP) -- He was scared, but the 12-year-old Boy Scout still knew what to do when he got lost during a Utah wilderness outing: He built a shelter made of tree branches and wood to get through a cold night and he covered himself in dirt to stay warm. Jared Ropelato's lean-to a crude structure the Boy Scout manual advises Scouts to build if they become lost kept him warm enough so he could sleep after the overnight low in Utah's Ashley National Forest dipped to 31 degrees in the area, said Daggett County sheriff's spokeswoman Karen Peterson. The boy was wearing only jeans and a shirt, and had no food or water, when he went missing around noon ...
NEWS CORP. Hacking Probe Is Widened in U.S... Post Date: 2011-08-13 20:56:47 by Brian S

Investigators haven't found hard evidence so far in probing whether News Corp.'s U.K.-based journalists might have hacked the phones of 9/11 victims, but U.S. authorities have expanded their query to see whether they can establish a broader pattern of more recent misconduct at the company's U.S. operations, say people familiar with the matter. British police investigating the sweeping phone-hacking scandal at the company's now-closed News of the World tabloid have told the Federal Bureau of Investigation there are no names or telephone numbers of Sept. 11 victims among the evidence they have gathered to date, according to people familiar with the case. London's ...
Texas Raids Fund For Poor To Keep Taxes Low Post Date: 2011-08-13 20:46:02 by Brian S

Texas utility customers pay a little extra on their bills that is supposed to go into a fund to help the poor cover their own utility payments. But in a year of record heat, less than half the fund is being paid out, forcing people to do without air conditioning in triple-digit temperatures. CBS reports that the Texas legislature has repeatedly approved raiding the fund in order to balance its budget without raising taxes. By 2013, there will be $900 million sitting unspent, with no plans to ever pay it out. And not only are the poor being shortchanged, but members of the middle class who pay utility bills are being charged that extra fee which does nothing but subsidize keeping taxes low ...

At a conservative gathering in South Carolina, Gov. Nikki Haley called Gov. Rick Perry a superstar and said his move to announce his run for president in her state, while other GOP contenders competed in the Ames Iowa straw poll, was brilliant. It just lets us know that its game on for all the candidates and I love that, Haley told reporters, referring to Perrys announcement at the RedState Gathering where she spoke earlier. She was effusive in her comments about the latest GOP presidential contender but fell short of endorsing the candidate. He comes from a great state, he has a great hope for America, Haley said. He wants to ...

CBO Schools Tea Party Freshman In Basic Economics Post Date: 2011-08-13 10:40:20 by go65

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), a Tea Party-backed freshman who voted against the final debt limit bill, recently asked to hear from the Congressional Budget Office about the impact of government spending on economic growth. It's an article of faith on the right that vastly shrinking government will unleash the forces of private enterprise, and faced with CBO's opposing view, Huelskamp wanted to know the answer to two questions: 1). What current federal departments, agencies, programs, or portions thereof do not contribute to economic growth? 2). In the programs that CBO believes do contribute to economic growth, what level of spending cuts would amount to a level you believe would be ...
S&P: Debt default skeptics fueled ratings downgrade Post Date: 2011-08-13 10:36:18 by go65

A Standard & Poors director said for the first time Thursday that one reason the United States lost its triple-A credit rating was that several lawmakers expressed skepticism about the serious consequences of a credit default a position put forth by some Republicans. Without specifically mentioning Republicans, S&P senior director Joydeep Mukherji said the stability and effectiveness of American political institutions were undermined by the fact that people in the political arena were even talking about a potential default, Mukherji said. That a country even has such voices, albeit a minority, is something notable, he added. This kind of ...

Medical Insurance that Worked — Until Government "Fixed" It Post Date: 2011-08-12 18:50:52 by jwpegler

Today, we are constantly being told, the United States faces a health care crisis. Medical costs are too high, and health insurance is out of reach of the poor. The cause of this crisis is never made very clear, but the cure is obvious to nearly everybody: government must step in to solve the problem. Eighty years ago, Americans were also told that their nation was facing a health care crisis. Then, however, the complaint was that medical costs were too low, and that health insurance was too accessible. But in that era, too, government stepped forward to solve the problem. And boy, did it solve it! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, one of the primary sources of health care and ...
14 Reasons Why Rick Perry Would Be A Really, Really Bad President Post Date: 2011-08-12 17:28:44 by go65

Supporters of Texas Governor Rick Perry are not going to like this article at all. Right now, Republicans all over the United States are touting Rick Perry as the "Republican messiah" that is going to come charging in to save America from the presidency of Barack Obama. Many believe that if Rick Perry enters the race, he will instantly become the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Perry certainly looks the part and he knows how to give a good speech, but when ordinary Americans all over the country take a hard look at his record, they may not like what they see. The truth is that Rick Perry is a big-time globalist, he has raised taxes and fees in Texas ...

Dont expect this to be the last stop for the train, but during the next stage of the court challenge process, the individual mandate in Obamacare (not the entire law) has been found unconstitutional. A federal appeals court ruled Friday that a provision in President Obamas health care law requiring citizens to buy health insurance is unconstitutional, but didnt strike down the rest of the law. The decision is a major setback for the White House, which had appealed a ruling by a federal district judge who struck down the entire law in January. But the case is clearly headed to the Supreme Court, which will have the final say. On Friday, the divided three-judge panel of ...

There are several states on the national electoral map that are, with rare exception, gimmes for Democratic candidates. Among them are California and New York. Which makes the findings of the latest Quinnipiac University poll a rare exception. For the first time since President Obama took the oath of office, his disapproval rating among Empire State residents is higher than his approval rating. Of 1,640 registered voters queried in the survey, 45% said they approve of the job the president is doing, while 49% said they disapprove. The findings represent a sharp turnaround from June, when Obamas approval rating among New Yorkers was in very positive territory, ...
U.S. Olympic Skier Gets Drunk, Pees On 11-Year-Old Girl On JetBlue Flight Post Date: 2011-08-12 13:06:07 by lucysmom

The drunk man who peed on a sleeping 11-year-old passenger on a JetBlue flight is one of the most elite skiers in the United States, according to the NYPost. Robert Vietze, a U.S. Skier, probably just blew his chances of participating in the Olympic Games in Russia in 2014. His name was removed from the team's roster yesterday. Vietze was drunk on his flight from Portland, Ore., to JFK Wednesday night when he was heading home from a week-long training camp, stumbled out of his seat to the girl five rows behind him, and urinated on the girl. Vietze told the cops: "I was drunk, and I did not realize I was pissing on her leg." The skier refuses to apologize for his actions. ...
