Recent incidents of violence in Norway and London have made us understandably uncomfortable here at home, as many fear that a worsening economy will lead to violence and unrest in American cities. This is why Congress must view the economy as its first priority and a matter of national security: unless and until we get our fiscal house in order to foster economic growth, civil society will continue to deteriorate. The fundamental lesson every American should learn from these incidents is that government cannot protect us. No matter how many laws we pass, no matter how many police or federal agents we put on the streets, a determined individual or group can still cause great harm. Both ...

The latest tracking map shows the core of the storm passing the Outer Banks of North Carolina and crossing over Rhode Island and Massachusetts into central Maine.

Dominion Virginia Power shut down its two North Anna reactors as a result of the earthquake, according to the the company. The earthquake was felt at the North Anna Power Station and the reactor operators, following procedures, shut down the reactors," said company spokesman Jim Norvelle. "It was a manual shutdown." The plant declared an alert, the second lowest level of emergency declaration, a commission spokesman said. The North Anna plant lost the power from off site that runs the reactors' cooling systems, Norvelle said, but the plant's four backup diesel generators started as designed. Officials are assessing the plant for damage, said the NRC's Joey ...

Libya: NATO Psy-Op Collapses - Qaddafi Prevails Again

Once again a defiant Qaddafi has prevailed against the full might of NATO aggression including a murderous bombing campaign followed by NATO special forces on the ground supporting mobs of US/UK/French/Qatari backed Al Qaeda thugs which swarmed Tripoli over the weekend. "Illustrious" news agencies from the Qatari government's AlJazeera, to the now exposed frauds at CNN, BBC, Reuters, AP, AFP have been caught perpetuating a concerted war propaganda campaign in order to break the will of both Libya and in particular Tripoli. Reports that Qaddafi's son Saif Al-Islam was "captured" by Libyan rebels by the disingenuous media outlets and "confirmed" by the ...

Hurricane Irene: Prepare For A Category 4 'Major Hurricane'
Post Date: 2011-08-23 11:53:58 by Brian S

Hurricane Irene continues to grow in strength and ferocity and is now on track to become a Category 4 hurricane, authorities said. Fueled by warm waters and nothing to slow it down, the hurricane is taking a path that will likely skirt Florida and head straight for the Carolinas, with landfall this weekend. The National Hurricane Center warns that the storm remains unpredictable and is urging East Coast residents to closely track the first major hurricane of the 2011 season as it heads toward the United States so that they can be prepared for impact. The storm, which is now a Category 2 hurricane, is moving at about 12 mph and is currently north of the Dominican Republic, said National ...

Feds Will Give Amtrak's Acela A $4.5 Million PER-SECOND Upgrade

The Department of Transportation announced Monday that the government will spend $450 million upgrading a 24-mile stretch of rail between Trenton and Brunswick, New Jersey, on the busy Northeast Corridor to allow Amtrak's signature Acela trains to reach 160 miles-per-hour. The speed-limit increase would save about one minute and forty seconds, Bloomberg reports — meaning the upgrade will cost about $4.5 million per-second. An additional $295 million will be spent to separate Amtrak trains from Long Island Rail Road trains in Queens — to speed travel times north from Manhattan. The money for high speed rail improvements comes from funds originally granted to Florida in the ...

Obama's deportation focus shifts from gay families

Reflecting a change in deportation policy, the Obama administration has dropped its attempt to remove a member of a same-sex California couple who overstayed his visa. The announcement in a case pending before an immigration judge in San Francisco represents the administration's decision to put a greater focus on deporting criminals and less emphasis on removing illegal immigrants who are otherwise law-abiding and have family ties in the United States. Families, the administration has concluded, include gay and lesbian couples. "The administration has demonstrated it can prevent a married same-sex couple from being torn apart by a 'DOMA deportation,' " said Lavi ...

Lockerbie victim's brother: Finally, Gadhafi's reckoning

As we watch what could well be the fall of one of history's most murderous dictators, Moammar Gadhafi, unfolding, I am overwhelmed by a range of emotions. Like many of us, I feel like a sports fan cheering the rebels to victory. But I also feel a deep, visceral, personal (and morally suspect, I must admit) sense of revenge and schadenfreude. Even before the defected Libyan justice minister, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, told a Swedish newspaper reporter in February that Gadhafi was behind the murder of my brother and 269 other innocents in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, many believed it to be true. The feeling now is bittersweet, but sweet nonetheless. One of my favorite ...

American Communist Lawyers Union Lauds International Court Ruling Giacomo In 1999, a Colorado woman, Jessica Lenahan repeatedly called 911 and asked for police protection from her husband. At the time of her calls, the police told her that they could not provide personal protection as they had no proof that a crime had been committed. Apparently the wife had filed a restraining order against the husband, who repeatedly threatened her. Eventually, he ignored the order and took the couple’s three young daughters, whom he later murdered. The woman filed suit against the police for denying protecting her and her children. The case went all the way to the US Supreme Court who ruled in a ...

All week long we have been witnessing a breakdown in global markets, or perhaps better stated – general public confidence. Gee, why would that be, we wonder? Why is it that the general public is not so easily convinced that all will be okay? Where is the usual confidence in their elected and non-elected leaders who've been given license to run the world, practically speaking? Well, we don't want to be the ones who say, "We told you so," but we did. And besides our publishing efforts here at the Daily Bell we have been trying our best to help spread the word as it relates to the oncoming financial hurricane (Hurricane Reality) for more than ten years now. You're about to relaunch Action Comics, DC Comics' longest-running title. Will your revamp of Superman be as major as John Byrne's back in 1986? Yeah, possibly. Probably as much, although he changed things quite considerably. I'm not using the costumes, just jeans and t-shirt, a Bruce Springsteen Superman. The original champion of the repressed Superman, the socialism and stuff, I wanted a bit of that. Click for Full Text!

Will she or won’t she? Sarah Palin has a busy schedule leading up to a major public event in Iowa on September 3, and Republican insider Karl Rove predicts she’s about to enter the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. If Election Day was right now, President Obama would defeat the former Alaska governor 50% to 33%, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. This marks the first time that the president has risen out of the 40s in hypothetical matchups with any of the major GOP presidential hopefuls. Fifteen percent (15%) prefer some other candidate, and two percent (2%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Last month, ...

Late Night: Jon Stewart calls Fox's Megyn Kelly a hypocrite August 12, 2011 | 7:10 am Last night on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart celebrated the triumphant return of his favorite Fox News personality, Megyn Kelly, after a lengthy maternity leave. While Stewart was happy to have Kelly back, there was something a little different--and it wasn't just her new, shorter hairstyle. Upon her return to "America Live" this Monday, Kelly grilled conservative radio host Mike Gallagher, who had called her maternity leave "a racket." For Stewart, Kelly's stance was more than a little ironic. "She was making quite a spirited argument that workers are ...

Wall Street Aristocracy Got $1.2 Trillion in Loans from Fed

Citigroup Inc. (C) and Bank of America Corp. (BAC) were the reigning champions of finance in 2006 as home prices peaked, leading the 10 biggest U.S. banks and brokerage firms to their best year ever with $104 billion of profits. By 2008, the housing market’s collapse forced those companies to take more than six times as much, $669 billion, in emergency loans from the U.S. Federal Reserve. The loans dwarfed the $160 billion in public bailouts the top 10 got from the U.S. Treasury, yet until now the full amounts have remained secret. Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s unprecedented effort to keep the economy from plunging into depression included lending banks and other companies as ...

Some of the country’s best-known multinationals closely guard a number they don’t want anyone to know: the breakdown between their jobs here and abroad. So secretive are these companies that they hand the figure over to government statisticians on the condition that officials will release only an aggregate number. The latest data show that multinationals cut 2.9 million jobs in the United States and added 2.4 million overseas between 2000 and 2009. Some of the same companies that do not report their jobs breakdown, including Apple and Pfizer, are pushing lawmakers to cut their tax bills in the name of job creation in the United States. But experts say ...

Social Security Disability On Verge Of Insolvency

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Laid-off workers and aging baby boomers are flooding Social Security's disability program with benefit claims, pushing the financially strapped system toward the brink of insolvency. Applications are up nearly 50 percent over a decade ago as people with disabilities lose their jobs and can't find new ones in an economy that has shed nearly 7 million jobs. The stampede for benefits is adding to a growing backlog of applicants - many wait two years or more before their cases are resolved - and worsening the financial problems of a program that's been running in the red for years. New congressional estimates say the trust fund that supports Social Security ...

Tropical Storm Irene’s track threatens South Florida

Tropical Storm Irene churned across the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Sunday, showing every indication of becoming the season’s first hurricane. Irene is expected to reach hurricane strength by Monday as it nears the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. If the forecast by the National Hurricane Center holds, it could approach South Florida late Thursday or early Friday as a hurricane. Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the center in West Miami-Dade County, cautioned that there was still uncertainty in the forecast and the storm was still a long way away – about 1300 miles from Miami at 8 a.m. Sunday. Most of the center’s computer models also steered the ...

Union Ain’t Wanted: The UAW’s Bad Week… by LaborUnionReport Over a year ago, the president of the United Auto Workers, Bob King, announced a campaign to ’shame’ foreign automakers with plants here in the U.S. into allowing his union to unionize them–the details of which would be released at a later point in time. Earlier this year, when King finally released his new manifesto on what he expected the automakers to agree to, it was met with well-deserved derision. The union was silent, though, when in June Bloomberg ran this headline: Hyundai Teaches UAW Best Factory Job Doesn’t Need a Union. However, in early August, knowing that his union’s ...

NEW YORK — The lawyer for the woman accusing former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault has said he believes all or some of the charges will be dropped, in the latest twist in the sensational case. Kenneth Thompson, the attorney for hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo, made the statement to The New York Times on Saturday after New York prosecutors scheduled a new meeting with his client for Monday. "My interpretation of that letter is that they're going to announce that they?re dismissing the case entirely, or some of the charges," Thompson told the Times, referring to a letter he received from prosecutors.
