Ignored by the media and dismissed by the Republican Party in general, liberty-minded Congressman Ron Paul leaped into third place today in the Gallup Presidential Nomination preference poll. Paul jumped over Michele Bachmann, the Tea Party darling/lunatic, relegating her to fourth-place in the current poll. Here's how the numbers shake out today. Rick Perry, Texas Governor: 29% Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts Governor: 17% Ron Paul, Texas Congressman: 13% Michele Bachmann, Minnesota Congresswoman: 10% That's right. Ron Paul jumped into third place...and the media continues to ignore his candidacy. I can't explain it as anything other than outright bias against the man ...

(08-26) 11:13 PDT New York (AP) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations for residents in low-lying coastal areas ahead of Hurricane Irene. Bloomberg said at a briefing Friday that emergency shelters will be opened at 4 p.m. The low-lying areas are scattered across the city and are home to about 270,000 residents. They include parts of Battery Park City, Coney Island and the Rockaways. Bloomberg calls the mandatory evacuations a first. Officials also ordered an unprecedented shutdown of the city's mass transit system for Saturday in advance of the hurricane. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has never before halted its entire system in ...

President Obama continues to lead all named Republicans in early polling on the 2012 race for the White House, but the numbers suggest a competitive race may be possible. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows the President earning 43% of the vote if Texas Governor Rick Perry is the GOP nominee. Perry attracts support from 40%. Ten percent (10%) say they’d prefer some other candidate while seven percent (7%) are not sure. If Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is the GOP candidate, the president leads 43% to 39%. In that match- up, 12% would prefer some other candidate and seven percent (7%) are not sure. With former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as his opponent, ...

AP-Gfk Poll: Most Republicans Happy With GOP Field

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After grousing for months, Republicans are growing more satisfied with their choices for president and, so far, they like what they're hearing from the newest candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry. An Associated Press-GfK poll released Friday found that two-thirds of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents are pleased with the party's presidential field, compared with just half in June. And they're paying more attention, with 52 percent expressing a "great deal" of interest in the GOP nomination fight - compared with 39 percent earlier this summer - after a period that saw Perry enter the race and Michele Bachmann win a test vote in Iowa, the lead-off ...

snip The report, from the U.S. Census, finds distinct regional differences, with states in the Northeast having the lowest marriage rates and lowest divorce rates for both men and women, and states in the South having the highest. New Jersey is among those with the lowest for both sexes; states with high rates for both men and women include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. "This does not mean you should move to the Northeast if you want your marriage to last," says sociologist Andrew Cherlin of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who has reviewed the data. In the South, people tend to marry earlier and often have less ...

New York Transit System Prepares for Full Shutdown (Irene)

New York City’s mass-transit system could shut down for much of the weekend if Hurricane Irene arrives as is currently predicted, Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Jay Walder said Thursday evening. The transit agency, which runs the city’s subways, buses and several commuter trains, can’t guarantee the safety of riders and employees if sustained winds reach above 39 miles per hour, Walder said. Even a weakened Irene would bring winds in excess of that speed, making it likely that the MTA will start shutting down service Saturday morning. There could be lingering delays and service outages into Monday’s morning rush hour. Click for Full Text!

Hurricane Irene: N.Y. And Four Other States Declare Emergency
Post Date: 2011-08-25 19:26:37 by Brian S

New York became the latest state to declare a state of emergency in a scramble to get ahead of Hurricane Irene as the storm prepares to make a potentially deadly drive up the East Coast. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s declaration Thursday follows those of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley. North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue –- whose state is projected to take the first hit Saturday when Hurricane Irene makes landfall in the U.S. –- limited her declaration to counties east of Interstate 95. The emergency declarations expand the states’ abilities to free up funds and cut through bureaucratic red tape to speed ...

Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson had a very close friend in his life – his dog, Hawkeye. Tumilson, a former San Diego resident, was killed August 6 in the Chinook helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of 29 other American servicemembers. Tumilson’s funeral was on Friday in Rockford, Iowa at Rockford Senior High. Hawkeye was one of the 1,500 souls who attended. As you can see by the gut-wrenching photo on the right, Hawkeye refused to leave his master’s side during the service. The picture was taken by Lisa Pembleton, Tumilson’s cousin. Pembleton contacted Home Post with this message: Hawkeye is/was his loyal “son”. To say that he was an amazing man doesn’t ...

Hurricane Irene: Tracks shifts west, potentially “extremely destructive” for East Coast

Hurricane Irene, 645 miles south of Cape Hatteras, is less than two days away from initiating a devastating blow to a large section of the East Coast. While its intensity has held steady since last night, the risk to much of the eastern seabord has grown larger as computer models have nudged its track westward, closer to the coast, if not slightly inland. Not only are severe impacts likely for coastal regions from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to New England, but interior sections of the mid-Atlantic, including the Richmond, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia may also experience major effects from Irene National Hurricane Center track forecastNOAA’s Hydrometeorological ...

Maxine Waters has held dominion over the black people of Watts, CA for over twenty years, and Watts is worse now than it was when she began representing them. This is despite Waters' and others in the Congressional Black Caucus' $17T War on Poverty dating back to the Great Society -- the time when black pimps voted for the racist Democratic president LBJ, who said to "give them [uppity Negroes] just enough to get by, but not enough to make a difference." Telling the Tea Party to "go to hell" was the easy applause line for Waters. It gave her relief, approval. She returned to her mansion, and her constituents remain high from their hit of the political crack of ...

Obama set to beat Bush debt-aggregation record in half the time

In 31 months of Barack Obama’s presidency, according to the Treasury and CBS News, the US has added $4 trillion to its national debt. That approaches the presidential record set by George W. Bush of $4.9 trillion, but there’s a catch to that. Bush set that record in two terms — in 96 months: The latest posting by the Treasury Department shows the national debt has now increased $4 trillion on President Obama’s watch. The debt was $10.626 trillion on the day Mr. Obama took office. The latest calculation from Treasury shows the debt has now hit $14.639 trillion. It’s the most rapid increase in the debt under any U.S. president. The national debt increased $4.9 ...

From bit from an exclusive Drudge peek... "Cheney excoriates Colin Powell for standing by silently, knowing that his deputy Richard Armitage was responsible for leaking Valerie Plame's identity to the press." He's always been an odd duck, this Colin Powell... hard to see what makes him tick, and this certainly raises a few questions regarding the man's character. I always thought it was race or something -as it was for many in 2008- but perhaps he had his own reasons for endorsing and continuing to make excuses for Obama's serial mismanagement of this country... like a guilty conscience and worrying about his own legacy- as well as a (heavily politicized) ...

The federal government will be bulk-selling the massive portfolio of foreclosed homes now owned by HUD, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to private investors -- vulture funds. These homes, which are now the property of the U.S. government, the U.S. taxpayer, U.S. citizens collectively, are going to be sold to private investor conglomerates at extraordinarily large discounts to real value. You and I will not be allowed to participate. As his numbers continue to improve, Ron Paul presents challenge to Obama, other GOP candidates

President Barack Obama's campaign has dismissed his candidacy as a Tea Party fringe, much the same way as his fellow Republican presidential contenders have, but that's par for the course. Ron Paul knows he has always been an underdog. But new polling data is showing Paul in a close race with Obama and other leading GOP contenders. Is it an anomaly? No, it's not and it shows clearly how Paul's message is increasingly resonating with a larger percentage of the American people, making him much less the underdog now than during any of his previous presidential bids. According to Gallup, Paul is statistically tied with Obama, with the president leading slightly 47-45 percent. ...

Report: Child poverty rate hits 20 percent in US as families struggle

There has been a "significant decline" in economic well-being for low-income children and families over the past decade as the official child poverty rate grew by 18 percent and poverty levels for families with children increased in 38 states, according to a new study. Economic and housing difficulties are the main culprits, reports the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a private charitable organization that focuses on disadvantaged children. “The recent recession has wiped out many of the economic gains for children that occurred in the late 1990s,” said Laura Speer, associate director for policy reform and data at the Casey Foundation, as the report was released Wednesday. ...

Liberal Paul Krugman: A Massive, Destructive Earthquake would be Great for the Economy

You may be aware that a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast yesterday evening. Luckily, the quake did little damage. However, you may also be aware that Nobel laureate Paul Krugman is missing a few marbles. According to him, it is actually a tragedy that the earthquake was not horrendously destructive. I do not know if I have ever read anything so stupid, but what would you expect from Paul Krugman? From Google+: If you aren't an idiot, this is a very clear case of the "Parable of the broken window." Here is the original text outlining the idea. Unfortunately, Mr. Krugman is apparently illiterate or simply a moron: --- Suppose it cost six francs to repair the ...

It's lunchtime at the Capitol and summering schoolteachers are singing beneath the white-granite dome. They march in circles, waving signs and belting out "Solidarity Forever," a union ditty. Down the hall, in his first-floor office, Gov. Scott Walker shrugs off the spectacle. "Twenty-five people sometimes sound as loud as twenty-five hundred," he says. Six months since he introduced legislation to limit the power of public employees to collectively bargain for benefits, Mr. Walker, a first-term Republican, has grown accustomed to the hothouse. But Greek-style protests have done little to thwart his agenda. If anything, Mr. Walker is more determined to battle on, ...
