Judge Orders Kansas To Restore Funding To Planned Parenthood
Post Date: 2011-08-31 11:37:56 by Brian S
3 Comments
A federal judge ordered that funding for Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri be restored immediately, after a new state law stripped it of funding for non-abortion activities. A provision in the Kansas budget prioritized family planning funding for clinics that did not perform abortions over those clinics that did, meaning that the region's Planned Parenthood clinics would go un-funded for the majority of their services. The group would lose an estimated $330,000 in funding per year under the new regulation. Earlier this month, when the lawsuit between Planned Parenthood and the state began, the state had requested permission to deliver monthly reimbursement payments to ...

Judge Blocks Parts Of Texas Abortion Law On Sonograms
Post Date: 2011-08-31 11:36:54 by Brian S

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - A federal judge temporarily blocked key provisions of a Texas abortion law on Tuesday that would require women seeking the procedure to view a sonogram and listen to the heartbeat of their fetus. The law, which had been due to go into effect on Thursday, was a major part of Republican Governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry's agenda in this year's Texas legislative session. But the judge, in a victory for abortion rights activists, ruled in a preliminary injunction that there was cause to believe such a requirement was an unconstitutional burden on doctors. "The act compels physicians to advance an ideological agenda with which they may ...

Comments (Add comment) Permalink U.S. ranks low for newborn survival Babies born in Cuba, Malaysia, Portugal, and the United Kingdom have a better chance of surviving the first month compared to those born in the United States, according to researchers at the World Health Organization and Save the Children. In a 20 year analysis of newborn death rates around the world, the study published in PLoS Medicine revealed the number of infants who die before they are 4 weeks old account for 41% of child deaths worldwide. Newborn deaths in the United States ranked 41 out of 45 among industrialized countries, on par with Qatar and Croatia. America's low ranking among modern nations ...

Why hasn't Obama sent me a check?

A massive fukking pecan tree fell on my house Saturday during Irene and we haven't had any electricity or anything since then. Never mind that my asshole insurance company hasn't sent an adjuster or my electric company won't clear my line. I just read in the newspaper that Obama has conducted the best response to a hurricane ever. Why hasn't that asshole sent me a check yet?

Hurricane Cost Seen as Ranking Among Top Ten (Cue Obama Conspiracy Nutz)

Hurricane Irene will most likely prove to be one of the 10 costliest catastrophes in the nation’s history, and analysts said that much of the damage might not be covered by insurance because it was caused not by winds but by flooding, which is excluded from many standard policies. Industry estimates put the cost of the storm at $7 billion to $10 billion, largely because the hurricane pummeled an unusually wide area of the East Coast. Beyond deadly flooding that caused havoc in upstate New York and Vermont, the hurricane flooded cotton and tobacco crops in North Carolina, temporarily halted shellfish harvesting in Chesapeake Bay, sapped power and kept commuters from their jobs in the ...

Has a more ridiculous non- story ever generated this much hypocrisy and pious self-congratulation before? Watching sportswriters go after this thing is like watching a nature show about chimpanzees in mating season… For those of you who aren’t sports fans, a convicted Ponzi scheme artist named Nevin Shapiro has come forward and claimed that he gave “impermissible benefits” to 72 athletes from the University of Miami, many of whom now play in the NFL. August 30, 2011 11:25 AM EDT The recovery from Hurricane Irene in the United States Northeast and Mid Atlantic regions has only just begun, but another tropical disturbance, Tropical Storm Katia, is slowly strengthening over the eastern tropical Atlantic, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Tuesday. On Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. EDT, the storm was located about 630 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, packing maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour, the NHC said. Katia is moving north/north-west at 17 miles per hour (mph) and has top wind of 40 mph. Katia Expected to Become a Hurricane Katia is expected to become a hurricane by late ...

New York (CNN) -- It took four trips by a state police helicopter, but 21 people who had been stranded by post-Irene floodwaters in a Prattsville, New York, house were rescued Monday without incident, a local official said. The group included four young children and a woman who appeared to be about five months pregnant, according to Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden. The group was stranded at a house that was cut off when all the bridges near it were washed out after torrential rains flooded homes and businesses and left the Catskill Mountains town of Prattsville largely cut off from the outside world. Another group of some 60 people took shelter during the storm at the ...

Brattleboro, Vermont (CNN) -- Floodwaters brought by Tropical Storm Irene began to recede Monday in Vermont, but the governor warned that further flooding and loss of life are likely ahead for the small, rural state. "It's just devastating," Gov. Peter Shumlin said Monday. "Whole communities under water, businesses, homes, obviously roads and bridges, rail transportation infrastructure. We've lost farmers' crops," he said. "We're tough folks up here but Irene ... really hit us hard." Hundreds of people remained trapped Monday in communities cut off by raging floodwaters that washed out or otherwise damaged 263 roads and bridges, Shumlin said. ...

On November 16, 1990, Barack Obama, then president of the Harvard Law Review, published a letter in the Harvard Law Record, an independent Harvard Law School newspaper, championing affirmative action. Although a paragraph from this letter was excerpted in David Remnick's biography of Obama, The Bridge, I had not seen the letter in its entirety before this week. Not surprisingly, it confirms everything I know about Barack Obama, the writer and thinker. Obama was prompted to write by an earlier letter from a Mr. Jim Chen that criticized Harvard Law Review's affirmative action policies. Specifically, Chen had argued that affirmative action stigmatized its presumed beneficiaries. The ...

Six Years After Katrina, Praise For Irene Response

New York (CNN) -- Six years after "Katrina" became shorthand for a botched response to a crisis, authorities at all levels of government are winning praise for their handling of Hurricane Irene. "Who would have thought, here we are, six years later, and instead of debating failures, we're debating being overprepared?" Chad Sweet, who served as chief of staff to former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, said Monday. "I think it's a good thing." As Irene headed for the East Coast over the weekend, governors and mayors from the Carolinas to New England ordered residents to leave low-lying coastal areas. President Barack Obama cut his summer ...

FEMA, To Pay For Irene Damage, Delays Funds For Rebuilding In Tornado-Ravaged Areas

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is temporarily suspending some payments to rebuild roads, schools and other structures destroyed during spring tornadoes in Joplin, Mo., and Southern states and other recent natural disasters to pay for damage caused by Hurricane Irene. With initial damage assessments from the storm potentially in the tens of billions of dollars, the Obama administration will need to request supplemental funding from Congress, possibly provoking another fight over federal spending as a new congressional “supercommittee” prepares to identify trillions of dollars in government spending cuts. FEMA said Sunday it will still pay people eligible for individual ...

Tropical Depression 12 Forms In Atlantic; Likely To Become Tropical Storm Katia Today

10:54 a.m. EDT, August 29, 2011 Tropical Depression 12 emerged in the far eastern Atlantic on Monday morning, and it's already forecast to strengthen into a strong hurricane within the next week. More immediately, the system likely will grow into Tropical Storm Katia later today. For now, the system is forecast to aim generally toward the Lesser Antilles. Some models hint that it might turn north out to sea without approaching the U.S. coast. However, it's too early to put faith in that prediction. If the depression does strengthen into Katia, it would become the 11th named storm and put the season almost three months ahead of schedule. On average, the 11th named storm ...

Congress To Bet The Farm On One Last Big Bill

WASHINGTON—In a stunning emergency session Wednesday, all 535 members of Congress unanimously agreed to pool what remained of their political capital and bet the farm on one final bill: H.R. 2809, a comprehensive and extremely risky plan experts said would either get the nation back on track or send it into a permanent downward spiral. According to government officials, the ambitious 15,980-page bill effectively puts all the nation's eggs in one basket, but congressional leaders from both parties agreed the time had come to "put up or shut up" and draft one huge piece of historic legislation that would address every conceivable issue facing the United States. "This ...

The storm released heavy rain and inflicted damage on the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday. States of emergency were declared in D.C., Virginia and Maryland. Ron Paul: FEMA Is the Real Disaster
Post Date: 2011-08-28 17:47:54 by buckeroo

Even before Hurricane Irene hit the U.S. East Coast, the Federal Emergency Management Agency was preparing to mitigate its devastating impact, spending from its $800 million relief fund to assist communities. But the real disaster may just be the agency itself, Rep. Ron Paul said Sunday. The Republican presidential candidate, who represents the 14th Congressional District that runs partly along the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, argued that the temporary aid provided by FEMA has helped ruin the economy by creating a false dependency. "FEMA has been around since 1978, it has one of the worst reputations for a bureaucracy ever," Paul said. "It's a system of bureaucratic ...

4.5M Without Power As Hurricane Irene Heads North

More than 4.5 million homes and businesses along the coast lost power, and at least 14 deaths were blamed on the storm. With roads impassable because of high water and fallen trees, it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known. But as day broke Sunday, surprisingly light damage was reported in many places, with little more than downed trees and power lines. "I think it's a little strong to say we dodged a bullet. However, it certainly could have turned out worse for the Hampton Roads area" in Virginia, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco. At the same time, officials warned of the possibility of extreme flooding as runoff from the ...

Ron Paul Calls For Spending Cuts Before Hurricane Relief

The moment Hurricane Irene was sweeping through New York, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul was calling for additional spending cuts before funding disaster relief. The Texas congressman doubled down comments he made Friday that the nation was better off in the 1900s, before the existence of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “Congressman, you would really at this point, do away with FEMA and all the things it’s doing to help hundreds of thousands of people along the East Coast?” Fox News Chris Wallace asked Paul. “Have you ever read the reports that came out of New Orleans [after Hurricane Katrina]?” Paul laughed. “It’s a system of ...

Will the Democrats Trump Trumka By Clarice Feldman Things rarely turn out the way I would have imagined them to, and President Obama and the Democrats might soon find that to be true of AFL-CIO head Richard Trumka. I sure did. As a young lawyer with a few years experience working for the Appellate division of the NLRB, I was asked to join with Joe Rauh and Joseph A ("Chip") Yablonski in representing Chip's dad, "Jock" Yablonski, who was engaged in a rare and difficult fight for leadership of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), then under the leadership of a corrupt man named Tony Boyle. After the election which was marked by fraud and cheating, we ...

Chicago-bound train derails in Neb.; 22 hurt BENKELMAN, Neb. (AP) -- An Amtrak train headed from California to Chicago struck a demolition crane in southwest Nebraska on Friday, forcing two locomotives and three passenger cars off the rails but causing no major injuries, officials said. The train, which was running on Amtrak's California Zephyr route from Emeryville, Calif., to Chicago, had 175 passengers and 17 crewmembers on board when it struck the crane at about 8 a.m. near Benkelman, which is near Nebraska's border with Kansas and Colorado. The two locomotives that left the tracks tipped over, but the three derailed passenger cars did not, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari ...

Ron Paul: Why a Top-tier Candidate Is Ignored by Republicans

It is hard not to be amazed by the blackout of media coverage of Ron Paul’s presidential campaign. Had Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman, or any second-tier candidate been performing remotely as well as Paul has, he would no longer be regarded as a “second-tier” candidate. To the credit of such left-leaning outlets as Jon Stewarts' The Daily Show and The Huffington Post, this phenomenon has not gone unnoticed by everyone. Let’s think about this. In spite of the extent to which Paul has been ignored by the establishment media in both of its leftist and rightist varieties, he unfailingly elicits explosive applause in every GOP presidential ...
