Perry Cut Volunteer Fire Department Funding In Texas By 75 Percent This Year

Under Gov. Rick Perry (R) this year, Texas slashed state funding for the volunteer fire departments that protect most of the state from wildfires like the ones that have recently destroyed more than 700 homes. Volunteer departments that were already facing financial strain were slated to have their funding cut from $30 million to $7 million, according to KVUE. The majority of Texas is protected by volunteer fire departments. There are 879 volunteer fire departments in Texas and only 114 paid fire departments. Another 187 departments are a combination of volunteer and paid. For that reason, aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could be more important than ever to the ...

(09-06) 08:45 PDT Austin, Texas (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry isn't yet saying if he plans to take part in a Republican presidential debate in California or stay in Texas to deal with wildfires that officials say destroyed more than 1,000 homes in a week. Perry says he is "substantially more concerned" about the people affected by the wildfires than he is about the debate planned for Wednesday. The longest-serving governor in Texas history says he expects federal assistance with the wildfires and expressed frustration that firefighting assets at Fort Hood are not already in use. Perry interrupted campaigning in South Carolina and returned to Texas on Monday. He took an aerial ...

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — More than 1,000 homes have burned in at least 57 wildfires across rain-starved Texas, most of them in one devastating blaze close to Austin that's still raging out of control, officials said Tuesday. Speaking at a news conference near one of the fire-ravaged areas, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said more than 100,000 acres (40,469.5 hectares) have burned in the drought-stricken state. Perry, who interrupted his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination to rush home, said more than 1,000 houses have burned since Monday, but Texas emergency management chief Nim Kidd subsequently said that number of homes has actually been lost in the past week. The Texas ...

Poll: OK to trade some freedoms to fight terrorism

Surveillance cameras in public places? Sure. Body scans at airports? Maybe. Snooping in personal email? Not so fast. The same Americans who are increasingly splashing their personal lives across Facebook and Twitter trace a meandering path when asked where the government should draw the line between protecting civil liberties and pursuing terrorism. Ten years after the 9/11 attacks led to amped-up government surveillance efforts, two-thirds of Americans say it's fitting to sacrifice some privacy and freedoms in the fight against terrorism, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. A slim majority — 54 percent — say that if they had ...

Bush: No sense of jubilation about bin Laden's death

CNN) -- Former President George W. Bush says he experienced no pleasure when he heard about the death of Osama bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader responsible for orchestrating the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. "He was sitting in a restaurant in Dallas when the Secret Service told him that President (Barack) Obama wanted to speak to him. He then learned about the assassination," documentarian Peter Schnall told CNN in an interview set to air Monday. Bush "said to us certainly there was no sense of jubilation (and) certainly no sense of happiness," Schnall stressed. "If anything, he felt that finally there was a sense of closure." Schnall ...

Hoffa Incites Riots And Murder Before Obama Speaks: Obama Declares War on American Citizens

Obama Declares War on American Citizens Civil discourse only applies to Obama’s enemies. In an unprecedented speech, Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa called for his union members to “Take These Son Of Bitches Out” These “Son of Bitches” he is referring to are the members of the TEA Party. He called for war and in most wars there is violence. To the union thugs, violence is merely part of their thuggery. “We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? ...

He's spent 23 years as a manager for brands as varied as Nissan, Ford and Mitsubishi, and has also served as a warranty administrator and customer relations manager for multiple dealerships. Medical Insurance that Worked — Until Government "Fixed" It

Today, we are constantly being told, the United States faces a health care crisis. Medical costs are too high, and health insurance is out of reach of the poor. The cause of this crisis is never made very clear, but the cure is obvious to nearly everybody: government must step in to solve the problem. Eighty years ago, Americans were also told that their nation was facing a health care crisis. Then, however, the complaint was that medical costs were too low, and that health insurance was too accessible. But in that era, too, government stepped forward to solve the problem. And boy, did it solve it! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, one of the primary sources of health care and ...

Catastrophic Fires Burn Thousands Of Acres, Force Evacuations Across Central Texas

In a summer where brush fires have become a near-daily occurrence, firefighting officials said the multiple wildfires that raged across Central Texas on Sunday were the worst the region has seen all year. Numerous wind-driven fires pushed fire departments to their limits and forced evacuations in Bastrop County, the Steiner Ranch subdivision, Pflugerville, Spicewood and other areas. Scores of residents were left wondering whether they had homes to return to as many of the fires continued to burn Sunday night. The largest and most destructive fire was in Bastrop County, where a blaze burned 14,000 acres and grew to an estimated 16 miles long by the end of the day, said Mark Stanford, fire ...

Less than 100 years ago, America's finest minds were convinced the nation was threatened by sexually insatiable female morons. A new history of the eugenics movement sheds light on a bizarre chapter in U.S. history. Among the many concerns that captivated the American educated class early in the last century, few were thought to be as urgent as the threat posed to the nation by sexually insatiable female morons. This may sound silly; today, our fear of morons is rather abstract, and on a national scale confined mostly to whomever is the current resident of the White House. But a hundred years ago, morons were public enemy No. 1, seen as a drain on the nation's resources and a grave ...

Veterans Can Proceed With Drug- Experimentation Suit Against CIA By NICK MCCANN OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) - A federal judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit that claims the CIA used U.S. veterans as human guinea pigs in Cold War-era drug experiments. Vietnam Veterans of America filed a class action against the Army and CIA in 2009, claiming that at least 7,800 soldiers had been used as guinea pigs in Project Paperclip. Soldiers were allegedly administered at least 250 and as many as 400 types of drugs, among them Sarin, one of the most deadly drugs known, amphetamines, barbiturates, mustard gas, phosgene gas and LSD. Using tactics it often attributed to the Soviet enemy, the U.S. government sought ...

The unemployment rate for blacks surged to 16.7% in August, its highest rate since 1984, the Labor Department reported Friday.NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The August jobs report was dismal for plenty of reasons, but perhaps most striking was the picture it painted of racial inequality in the job market.Black unemployment surged to 16.7% in August, its highest level since 1984, while the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8%, the Labor Department reported. "This month's numbers continue to bear out that longstanding pattern that minorities have a much more challenging time getting jobs," said Bill Rodgers, chief economist with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development ...

A 24-year-old Cincinnati father died from a tooth infection this week because he couldn't afford his medication, offering a sobering reminder of the importance of oral health and the number of people without access to dental or health care. According to NBC affiliate WLWT, Kyle Willis' wisdom tooth started hurting two weeks ago. When dentists told him it needed to be pulled, he decided to forgo the procedure, because he was unemployed and had no health insurance. When his face started swelling and his head began to ache, Willis went to the emergency room, where he received prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications. Rain-Packed Tropical Storm Lee Forms Off Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Tropical Storm Lee formed in the waters off Louisiana on Friday, threatening a drenching along much of the Gulf coast over the Labor Day weekend with up to 20 inches of rain in some spots. Mississippi's governor declared a state of emergency in seven counties on or near the coast, saying the storm is expected to cause tremendous flooding. A state of emergency frees up resources that can be used to prepare for a storm, and Louisiana's governor declared one Thursday because of the threat of flash flooding. Lee could unleash "efficient and torrential topical rains" for the next several days, the National Weather Service said. In the French Quarter, some ...

Employment growth ground to a halt in August, as sagging consumer confidence discouraged already skittish U.S. businesses from hiring, keeping pressure on the Federal Reserve to provide more monetary stimulus to aid the struggling economy. Nonfarm payrolls were unchanged last month, the Labor Department said Friday. It was the first time since 1945 that the government has reported a net monthly job change of zero. The August payrolls report was the worst since September 2010, while nonfarm employment for June and July was revised to show 58,000 fewer jobs. “The bottom line is this is bad,” Diane Swonk, chief economist with financial services firm Mesirow Financial, told CNBC ...

Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony on Wednesday – but nearly half of the 2010 playoff contenders won't be there. NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers – Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart – will not be attending the White House visit due to "schedule conflicts." They must be very busy people. Regardless of one's political views, the president is still the president – and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and ...

Heat Hacking: Criminals Can Steal Your ATM PIN Code Via the Heat Your Fingers Leave Behind

The PIN digits you punch into an ATM’s keypad to authenticate your transactions are leaving traces of themselves behind in the form of heat, says a paper recently presented by a team of UC San Diego security researchers. Someone following immediately behind an ATM user can use a digital infrared camera to determine what keys were pushed with about 80 percent accuracy, their study shows. Even a full minute later the camera can pick up the correct digits about half the time. But while its easy enough for a criminal type to determine the digits in your pin with an IR camera, it’s fairly difficult to determine the order. And the hack only seems to work on plastic keypads--metal ...

He writes, " If I've heard it once, I've heard it a hundred times: President Obama is destroying the country. Some say this destructiveness is intended; most say it is inadvertent, an outgrowth of inexperience, ideological wrong-headedness and an oddly < character. Indeed, on the matter of Mr. Obama's character, ...

New photographs taken of a vast glacier in northern Greenland have revealed the astonishing rate of its breakup, with one scientist saying he was rendered "speechless." In August 2010, part of the Petermann Glacier about four times the size of Manhattan island broke off , prompting a hearing in Congress. Researcher Alun Hubbard, of the Centre for Glaciology at Aberystwyth University, U.K., told msnbc.com by phone that another section, about twice the size of Manhattan, appeared close to breaking off. In 2009, scientists installed GPS masts on the glacier to track its movement. Image: The Petermann Glacier on July 24, 2001. Alun Hubbard / Aberystwyth University, Wales, U Taken ...

CA bill would require parents pay workers comp to babysitters Rick Moran This is asinine - and about to become the law in the state of California: Assembly Bill 889 (authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, will require these protections for all "domestic employees," including nannies, housekeepers and caregivers. The bill has already passed the Assembly and is quickly moving through the Senate with blanket support from the Democrat members that control both houses of the Legislature - and without the support of a single Republican member. Assuming the bill will easily clear its last couple of legislative hurdles, AB 889 will soon be on its way to the ...

Tracing what they say is an illegal shipment of Indian hardwood, federal agents raided offices and factories belonging to Gibson Guitar Corporation last week for the second time in two years, seizing documents, computer hard drives, pallets of wood, guitars and tools. Henry E. Juszkiewicz, Gibson’s chief executive and part-owner, accused the federal government of bullying the famed guitar maker. He said the agents had misread Indian laws regarding the export of ebony and rosewood fingerboards. “It’s baloney,” he said. “It seems to me they are gunning for us. They are just looking for us to make a mistake or do something wrong.” Wyn Hornbuckle, a spokesman ...

President Barack Obama may not win an election against the Republicans next year, but he has no problem beating Orly Taitz. Taitz, the Rancho Santa Margarita lawyer and Mission Viejo dentist who previously attempted to prove that Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, was dealt another blow in court Tuesday. A judge threw out the case she brought against the Social Security Administration, thereby thwarting Taitz’s attempt to “uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of this nation.” Taitz hoped to show that the president is “using a fraudulently obtained” Social Security number and that the SSA, among other agencies, is involved in a scheme to ...
