'Occupy Wall Street' to Turn Manhattan into 'Tahrir Square'

September 17, 2011 11:35 AM EDT "Occupy Wall Street" is readying its protesters to camp in on Wall Street starting Saturday, for as long as their passion lasts. As the protesters call for President Barack Obama to establish a commission to end "the influence money has over our representatives in Washington," it will be interesting to see whether New York will succeed in transforming Lower Manhattan into an "American Tahrir Square." Occupy Wall Street, a leaderless resistance movement, was published by activist magazine Adbusters on July 13, and since then people from groups such as NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage have participated to organize the ...

The truth is out. The leading lady of liberal America between 1960 and her death in 1994, the standard setter of au courant women with her pillbox hats, bouffant hairstyle, and jet-set friends, the Guinevere to Camelot’s King Arthur himself, didn’t much care for lesbians and Martin Luther King and other leftist world leaders. The tapes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (shown as a young First Lady, left) are out, as The New American reported, and their first installment weeks ago revealed that she thought Vice President Lyndon Johnson, the most prodigious and successful election thief in American history, had a role in the killing of her husband. The latest release contain the ...

39 Admitted to Area Hospitals After Air Race Crash

A REMSA representative says nearly 40 people were admitted to Renown after a plane crashed near a stand at the Reno Air Races. Witnesses say the plane was about 400-500 feet in the air when it nosedived and crashed at the Reno-Stead Airport. The accident happened just before 4:30pm during the National Championship Air Races. Our reporter Chris Ciarlo says the P51 WWII Mustang was third in contention during the gold heat when the crash happened. The plane DID NOT hit the stands, it hit nearby tables instead. We just received confirmation that the pilot in the crash was Jimmy Leeward and he flew the Galloping Ghost. There's no word on his condition. A second reporter on scene, Paul ...

Mayor Bloomberg Predicts Riots In The Streets If Economy Doesn't Create More Jobs

Mayor Bloomberg warned Friday there would be riots in the streets if Washington doesn't get serious about generating jobs. "We have a lot of kids graduating college, can't find jobs," Bloomberg said on his weekly WOR radio show. "That's what happened in Cairo. That's what happened in Madrid. You don't want those kinds of riots here." In Cairo, angry Egyptians took out their frustrations by toppling presidential strongman Hosni Mubarak - and more recently attacking the Israeli embassy. As for Madrid, the most recent street protests were sparked by widespread unhappiness that the Spanish government was spending millions on the visit of Pope Benedict ...

34% say country would be better off under Hillary Clinton: poll By Kase Wickman Friday, September 16th, 2011 -- 3:33 pm More than a third of Americans said that if Hillary Clinton had been elected president in 2008, the country would be in better shape than it is right now under President Barack Obama's leadership. The Bloomberg poll showed that Clinton, currently serving as secretary of state, garnered a 64 percent favorability rating, making her the most popular national politician in the country. Thirty-four percent expressed wishful thinking about a Clinton presidency, up from the 25 percent who responded the same in July 2010. In the 2008 election, Obama won the majority of ...

Perry’s Star Begins To Fade With Voters [Ron Paul still most competitive in new polls]

Rick Perry’s status as front runner in the race for the GOP nomination is beginning to falter it seems, if the latest national poll released by Rasmussen is anything to go by. Just two weeks ago, Perry held a three point lead over Obama in a hypothetical match up, since his performance in the debates, he has slipped and trails Obama 46% to 39%. Perry trails Obama by 15 percentage points among women and barely leads among men. Even mainstream media pundits agreed Perry’s performances, particularly his exchanges with Ron Paul, in the debates were distinctly average. In addition, much coverage over the past fortnight has focused on Perry’s Democratic past and his flip ...

President Obama on Thursday bestowed the nation's highest military honor on Dakota Meyer, a young and humble Marine who defied orders and barreled straight into a ferocious "killing zone" in Afghanistan to save 36 lives at extraordinary risk to himself. "You did your duty, above and beyond," Obama told Meyer after reciting his dramatic story. Though the corporal and a fellow Marine were going against orders -- commanders considered their effort too dangerous -- they were doing what they thought was right, Obama said. The president placed the Medal of Honor ribbon around Meyer's neck, patted his back and shook his hand as the audience in the White House East ...

Before he entered his first debate as a presidential candidate, Texas Governor Rick Perry was the Republican frontrunner and held a modest lead in a hypothetical matchup against President Obama. Perry was the target for all the other candidates in the two most recent GOP debates, however, and he now trails the president by single digits. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters shows Obama picking up 46% of the vote, while Perry earns support from 39%. Fifteen percent (15%) are either undecided or prefer another candidate. Two weeks ago, Perry was up by three. Three weeks ago, the president held a three-point edge over the governor. Over 4 trillion dollars added to our national debt (He called Bush "unpatriotic" for adding the same ammount, yet Obama has managed to do so in less than 3 years!) Unemployment has rapidly increased Obama has broken every single campaign promise except ending DADT. Liberals: Why can't you just admit that he is too inexperienced to be president? Without childishly blaming everyone else, why can't you admit it? I can't understand why you would actually stand up for a president whose hurting you regardless of what party you are.

As an economist I have never had much patience with Paul Krugman’s economics, stuck as he is in 1940s-era Keynesian demand-side economics. I have sometimes concluded that Krugman had rather denounce Ronald Reagan that to acknowledge that supply-side economists have established that fiscal policy has supply-side, not just demand-side, effects. However, Krugman does display at times a moral conscience. He did so on September 11 in his New York Times column, "The Years of Shame." Krugman wrote that 9/11 was hijacked by "fake heros" who used the event "to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight" and that "our professional pundits" lent ...

The U.S. Energy Department hopes that a new solar energy project will result in about 900 construction and permanent operations jobs. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said today that his department had finalized a $1.2-billion loan guarantee to Mojave Solar for the development of the Mojave Solar Project. When complete, the 250-megawatt solar generation project in San Bernardino County will increase the nation’s currently installed concentrating solar power capacity by approximately 50%. Abengoa Solar Inc., the project sponsor, is the source of the estimate on construction and permanent operations jobs. “Investments in solar generation facilities like the Mojave Solar Project are ...

Red State Welfare Queens by mistermix This map and accompanying discussion (via) should be more widely disseminated. As Kevin Drum notes, rural life is more expensive, and it is subsidized by city dwellers. Rural state Republicans used to know this, so they would often vote for pork-barreling blue dogs who were perceived as more effective in bringing home far more than their fair share of tax dollars. But in the past few years, they started to believe the Tea Party line that they were the last real Americans laboring under the oppressive yoke of elite urban taxation. They aren’t, and they ought to be reminded of that. When you have to start driving 20 miles to get to the Post Office, ...

Pennsylvania’s senior Democratic official is breaking away from President Obama when it comes to his jobs bill. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey says the president’s legislative strategy won’t work. Casey was one of the first Democrats to endorse Barack Obama, but now he thinks the president’s jobs bill needs to be broken apart, he told KDKA Political Editor Jon Delano. “I’m afraid if we tried to pass one big bill, I think there’s a lot of skepticism about big pieces of legislation with all kinds of different component parts. We should break this up.” Casey says Washington is gridlocked with too much politics to allow passage of a single jobs bill as pushed by ...

Obama's failure On Jobs: Four Damning Charts

President Obama may have a buddy-buddy relationship with big labor, but he’s no friend to ordinary workers. Here are four damning pieces of evidence. 1. The unemployment rate remains above 9 percent according to the Labor Department data released on Friday. This is about 2-1/2 percentage points higher than Obama promised if would be at this stage if we adopted the failed stimulus. This is a spectacular failure. 2. Black unemployment has jumped to 16.7 percent. I’ve already commented on how Obama has produced bad results for the African-American community, and the joblessness numbers are rather conclusive. What makes that figure especially remarkable is that the black ...

House Republicans Seek Auto Industry Cuts To Cover For Disaster Relief Funds

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans rolled out their plan to fund disaster relief in Majority Leader Eric Cantor's (R-Va.) district, but at the cost of almost half of remaining loans set aside to help the American auto industry. Included in their plan for a continuing resolution to fund the government past Sept. 30 is a provision to cut $1.5 billion of the $3.4 billion in remaining funds for low-cost loans -- sometimes referred to as "Section 136 loans." The money would be reused to pay for aid to states as they clean up after recent natural disasters like Hurricane Irene and the rare east coast earthquake -- both of which greatly affected Cantor's Virginia district. The cost ...

Dr. Giaever wrote to Kirby of APS: “Thank you for your letter inquiring about my membership. I did not renew it because I cannot live with the (APS) statement below (on global warming): APS: 'The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. The Pentagon has worried for months that a project backed by a prominent Democratic donor might interfere with military GPS. Now Congress wants to know if the White House pressured a general to change his testimony. The four-star Air Force general who oversees U.S. Space Command walked into a highly secured room on Capitol Hill a week ago to give a classified briefing to lawmakers and staff, and dropped a surprise. Pressed by members, Gen. William Shelton said the White House tried to pressure him to change his testimony to make it more favorable to a company tied to a large Democratic donor. The episode—confirmed by The Daily Beast in interviews with administration officials and the ...

(09-15) 09:23 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The outlook for the next three months is bad news for drought-plagued Texas and its neighbors. Texas is the center of a region of expected above-normal temperatures that are expected to extend into New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado, and could reach all the way to the western Great Lakes states, according to the October through December forecast released Thursday by the federal Climate Prediction Center. The outlook also calls for drier than normal conditions in that region, a weather pattern that likely will extend all across the Gulf Coast states to Georgia and South Carolina.

THE WAR NERD / SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 WAR NERD 9/13: TEN YEARS ON AND A LONG WAY DOWN By Gary Brecher Well, it’s ten years and a couple of days since 9/11. The reason I’m two days late doing a look back is that 9/11 is boring. I’m sick of it. And the ten years since are just depressing, at least if you’re an American. So I spent the 9/11 anniversary reading Jack Weatherford’s book on the Mongol Queens because I didn’t want to see New Yorkers hamming it up the way they’ve been doing for ten long years. It reminds me of the stupid group hug’n’cry when that worthless limey slut Princess Di died. While she was alive she was just a punchline for ...

Some Democrats are arguing that the NY-9 race doesn’t mean anything for Obama’s 2012 chances. But according to David Weprin, the Democratic candidate who lost the NY-9 race to Republican Bob Turner, Obama has “major problems” in New York. Weprin blamed Obama’s unpopularity and Israel issues for his failed bid during an interview with Washington Jewish Week’s Adam Kredo: My first question for Weprin was, “What happened?” His reply: “The media, my opponent somewhat successfully made it a referendum on Obama. I don’t know if it was just Israel, but Israel certainly was a major part of it.” Whether real or perceived, there’s ...

The victory of Bob Turner in heavily Democratic NY-09 is clearly not good news for Democrats. When the media hasn’t picked up is that Turner benefited by not embracing the Paul Ryan budget. Mickey Kaus has some good points about the inability for Democrats to win on entitlements: It’s the possibility that the Democrats favorite issue–Social Security–didn’t work to save them because Obama, too, has embraced cutting Social Security and Medicare in “some undefined ‘everything on the table’ entitlement reform,” as Weigel puts it. Could it be that the differences between Obama’s Medicare cuts and GOP Rep. Paul Ryan’s Medicare cuts– ...
