Judge Finds Manipulation in Recall Vote in Arizona Post Date: 2011-10-09 18:04:20 by Ferret Mike

MESA, Ariz. At first glance, it had the makings of a spirited election: the leader of Arizonas crackdown on illegal immigration facing off at the polls with an immigrant from Mexico who believed that the state had gone too far. But the immigrant, Olivia Cortes, a retiree who filed papers in July to challenge the State Senate president, Russell Pearce, disappeared from the political scene last week just as quickly as she had appeared. Ms. Cortess candidacy for a legislative district in this working-class community east of Phoenix, it now appears, had been a dirty trick. Critics of Mr. Pearces hard-line approach to illegal immigration collected enough signatures to ...

The cold is coming -- and they know it. As the Occupy Wall Street protesters head into their fourth week, the camp is preparing to dig in for the long haul. Saturday, thoughts were turning to basic human needs and ways to plan and strategize for the challenges ahead. At Saturday's 9 a.m. coordination meeting, representatives on the numerous task forces dealt with the need for more donations of sleeping bags, ground pads and shoes. Right now there's an oversupply of socks, T-shirts and thermal blankets. "The cold is definitely a concern for all of us," Olivia Nole-Malpezzi, 18, of Rochester said later. "We definitely need to prepare for the winter, mentally and ...

Al Davis, the irascible owner of the Oakland Raiders whose feuds with the N.F.L. reshaped professional football over the last half-century and helped spur its rise to pre-eminence in the landscape of American sports, died Saturday. He was 82. The Raiders said he died at his home in Oakland. Standoff With Protesters Closes National Air And Space Museum In Washington Post Date: 2011-10-08 18:19:40 by Brian S

The National Air and Space Museum in Washington was closed Saturday after anti-war demonstrators tried to enter the building to protest a drone exhibit, and at least one person was pepper-sprayed. Smithsonian spokesman John Gibbons said a large group of demonstrators, estimated at 100 to 200 people, arrived at about 3 p.m. and tried to enter the National Mall museum. When a security guard stopped the group from entering, saying they could not bring in signs, he was apparently held by demonstrators, Gibbons said. A second guard who arrived used pepper spray on at least one person and the crowd dispersed. A number of groups have been demonstrating in the city in the past week. The group ...
Has Harry Reid presented the GOP with the means to overturn Obamacare? Post Date: 2011-10-08 10:27:56 by CZ82

Has Harry Reid presented the GOP with the means to overturn Obamacare? Jerry Shenk Following cloture, on Thursday, October 6, the US senate was poised to cast a pro forma vote on final passage of a China currency bill when Senate Republicans attempted to use the rules of the Senate to attach a post-cloture amendment. The Republican amendment would have required a vote on President Obama's jobs bill, forcing Democrats to vote on the plan the president has been insisting Congress pass and blaming Republicans for blocking it. Because there are insufficient votes among Senate Democrats to force closure or pass the bill, allowing the amendment would have blown up the charade that ...
Lawrence O'Donnell Criticized for Offensive Interview With Herman Cain Post Date: 2011-10-08 09:21:48 by no gnu taxes

Lawrence O'Donnell has landed on hot water after being disrespectful to Herman Cain during an interview for "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell". The host started out by reading an excerpt from the 65-year-old businessman's book which read, "I was too young to participate when they first started the freedom rides [of the civil rights movement] and sit-ins... I just kept going to school doing what I was supposed to do, and stayed out of trouble [as my father told me to]." "Where do you think black people would be sitting on the bus today if Rosa Parks had followed your father's advise?" O'Donnell then asked Cain, who replied, "My ...

A computer virus has infected the cockpits of Americas Predator and Reaper drones, logging pilots every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other warzones. The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the militarys Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creechs computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become ...
Senator accused of sexism over 'thank God' remark about female opponent Post Date: 2011-10-08 06:48:39 by Ferret Mike

A US senator, who once posed nude for a magazine photo shoot, has been accused of sexism after declaring "thank God" when his female opponent said she had never done the same. Scott Brown, a Massachusetts Republican who helped pay for university by appearing in Cosmopolitan, was alleged to have descended into "the gutter" with his comment on Elizabeth Warren. Asked how she funded her own education, Prof Warren, a 62-year-old Democratic ally of Barack Obama who teaches at Harvard, said she had "borrowed money", adding: "I kept my clothes on." During a radio interview, Mr Brown, 52, responded: "Thank God." He later added: "I went to ...

A federal judge wont hold the CIA in contempt for destroying videotapes of detainee interrogations that included the use of a torture technique known as waterboarding, ruling instead Wednesday that the spy agency merely committed transgressions for its failure to abide by his court order. Punishing the Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein of New York ruled, would serve no beneficial purpose. (.pdf) Hellerstein wrote that CIA officials responsible for producing the tapes in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit might not have been aware of the videotapes existence before they were destroyed. The judge also said ...

Lawrence O’Donnell lectures Herman Cain on how to be black in the segregated South [Full Thread] Post Date: 2011-10-07 16:02:08 by no gnu taxes

This is possibly the most offensive interview sequence I’ve ever seen.
Lawrence O’Donnell lectures and snidely criticized Herman Cain, who was a minor when Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of the bus in 1955 and in high school for the desegregation fights in the late 1950s and early 1960s, for not participating in civil rights demonstrations later in the 1960s. The Freedom Rides referenced in the interview and as to which O’Donnell lambasted Cain for not participating, were in 1961, when Cain was in high school.
Here are some memorable O’Donnell questions:
Where do you think black people would be sitting on the bus today if Rosa Parks had followed your father’s advice [for ...
NY State Senators Say We’ve Got Too Much Free Speech; Introduce Bill To Fix That Post Date: 2011-10-07 14:54:44 by Ferret Mike

(TECH DIRT) Weve been pointing out a variety of attempts to push back on the First Amendment lately. One fertile ground for such attacks are local politicians carrying the cyberbullying banner, in various attempts to magically outlaw being a jerk online, usually by making it illegal to offend someone online. Of course, making someones action illegal based on how someone else feels about it is all kinds of crazy. It also would seem to violate the very principles of the First Amendment, which bar Congress (and local governments) from passing any laws that take away ones right to free speech. In the past, lawmakers pushing these laws have tended to ...

Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan raises math questions Post Date: 2011-10-07 13:15:45 by go65

WASHINGTON -- Herman Cain's bid for the Republican presidential nomination is fueled in part by his proposed tax code overhaul that tax policy veterans say doesn't add up. Cain's proposal is gaining attention after a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Tuesday found his campaign is tied for second place with Texas Gov. Rick Perry among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. In campaign stops, Cain touts his 9-9-9 plan as a concept that will lead to a fairer tax system. The proposal would tax sales transactions and gross income for individuals and businesses at 9 percent while eliminating levies on capital gains. It also ends the taxes that fund Social Security, ...

The Occupy Wall Street protesters came to Washington, where they were compared favorably to the Tea Party by Vice President Joe Biden while House Majority Leader Eric Cantor called them growing mobs dividing the country. President Barack Obama also weighed in, expressing empathy with the demonstrators in the nations capital while stopping short of endorsing their movement. The American people understand that not everybodys been following the rules, that Wall Street is an example of that, Obama said yesterday at a White House press conference. Occupy Wall Street began three weeks ago in Lower Manhattan and has spread to cities from Houston to San ...

With Time Running Short, Jobs Managed His Farewells Post Date: 2011-10-07 11:30:58 by war

Over the last few months, a steady stream of visitors to Palo Alto, Calif., called an old friends home number and asked if he was well enough to entertain visitors, perhaps for the last time. In February, Steven P. Jobs had learned that, after years of fighting cancer, his time was becoming shorter. He quietly told a few acquaintances, and they, in turn, whispered to others. And so a pilgrimage began. The calls trickled in at first. Just a few, then dozens, and in recent weeks, a nearly endless stream of people who wanted a few moments to say goodbye, according to people close to Mr. Jobs. Most were intercepted by his wife, Laurene. She would apologetically explain that he was too ...

In news sure to inject shock and awe into the Republican political primary season, a Zogby poll released Thursday showed Herman Cain leading the Republican field, topping former front-runner Mitt Romney by an astonishing 20 points. Cain would also narrowly edge out Obama in a general election, the poll found, by a 4644 margin. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, would lose by a point to the president, 40 percent to 41 percent. Texas governor Rick Perry, who has slipped in the polls of late, would lose to the president 45 percent to 40 percent. The poll found that 38 percent of Republican primary voters said they would vote for Cain if the primary were held today. ...

Senator tells Judge Napolitano demonstrators remind him of Paris mob During a Fox Business interview with Judge Andrew Napolitano, Senator Rand Paul warned that Barack Obamas implicit support for the grievances of the Occupy Wall Street protesters could provoke them to turn into a violent mob. Topeka, Kansas City Council Considers Decriminalizing Domestic Violence To Save Money Post Date: 2011-10-06 18:49:20 by Brian S

Faced with their worst budget crises since the Great Depression, states, and cities have resorted to increasingly desperate measures to cut costs. State and local governments have laid off teachers, slashed Medicaid funding, and even started unpaving roads and turning off streetlights. But perhaps the most shocking idea to save money is being debated right now by the City Council of Topeka, Kansas. The city could repeal an ordinance banning domestic violence because some say the cost of prosecuting those cases is just too high: Last night, in between approving city expenditures and other routine agenda items, the Topeka, Kansas City Council debated one rather controversial one: ...
