BOSTON Soon after Mitt Romney handed out eye-popping bonuses to top performers at his private equity firm in the early 1990s, a young employee invited him to ride in his brand-new toy a $90,000 Porsche 911 Carrera. Mr. Romney was entranced by the sleek, supercharged vehicle: at the end of a spin around downtown Boston, he turned to the employee, Marc Wolpow, and marveled, Boy, I really wish I could have one of these things. Mr. Wolpow was dumbfounded. You could have 12 of them, he recalled thinking to himself. But Mr. Romney had insisted on driving an inexpensive, domestic stalwart that looked out of place in the company parking lot a ...

In a pre-debate rally at his campaign headquarters in a former Blockbuster video store in Des Moines, Mitt Romney highlight his family - and bashed people who suggested an "entitlement-based" society. Some people believe that "instead of a merit-based society we should be an entitlement based society," Romney told the crowd of about 100 people on hand, adding that people in that mindset want everyone to essentially receive the same things, and said if that happens, "We'll have the certainty that we're all pretty close to equal. But we'll also have the certainty that we're all poor. Because what drives an economy is people pursuing their ...

Newt Grinrich's surge in the polls extends far beyond the early presidential nominating contest in Iowa, where he is the front-runner. The former House speaker has opened up commanding leads in two other key states: South Carolina and Florida, according to the latest NBC News-Marist polls. The figures come after Gringich's strong performance at last night's GOP debate where he withstood several attacks from his rivals. Fueled by the support from conservatives and the Tea Party, Gingrich is ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by nearly 20 points in South Carolina. The winner of that state's primary has gone on to capture each GOP nomination since 1980. Gingrich ...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - She split her own lip with a pin, scraped her knuckles with sandpaper and had her friend punch her in the face. Investigators say she even ripped open her blouse, then wet her pants to give the appearance she had been knocked unconscious. But it was all part of what authorities said Friday was an elaborate hoax by the woman to convince her husband she was raped so they could move to a safer neighborhood. Charges filed by the Sacramento County district attorney allege Laurie Ann Martinez, a prison psychologist, conspired with the friend to create the appearance that she was beaten, robbed and raped by a stranger in April in her Sacramento home. Martinez, her ...
New Nevada law spurs big drop in homes entering foreclosure Post Date: 2011-12-11 11:26:46 by lucysmom

Reporting from Los Angeles and Henderson, Nev. For years, the housing news in Nevada has been unrelentingly bleak: Nearly 3 in 5 homeowners, even the state's attorney general, are underwater on their home loans. In Las Vegas, home prices have tumbled further than in any U.S. metropolitan region. So when market researcher RealtyTrac announced a 75% drop in the number of Nevada homes entering foreclosure in October, even as those numbers surged elsewhere in the country, things seemed finally to be looking up in the Silver State. That news, though, did not result from a reversal of fortune in the Nevada housing market. It was spawned by a new Nevada law that plays hardball with ...
Why Obama Will Not Veto NDAA Military Detention of Americans: He Requested It. Post Date: 2011-12-11 09:53:39 by A K A Stone

Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) on Senate floor explaining it was Obama who requested the provision for indefinite military detention of American citizens without charge or trial. Senator Diane Feinstein recently confirmed that she was unable to excise Section 1031 in an email: Senator Feinstein Confirms President and Military Can Detain US Citizens Without a Trial Like you, I oppose these provisions. Section 1031 is problematic because it authorizes the indefinite detention of American citizens without due process. In this democracy, due process is a fundamental right, and it protects us from being locked up by the government without charge. For this reason, I offered an amendment to prohibit the ...
The Real Legacy of Nelson Mandela The antiapartheid hero refused to launch a personality cult. Why have other African leaders failed to follow suit? Post Date: 2011-12-11 09:37:16 by A K A Stone

A frail Nelson Mandela, now 93, has gone back to Qunu, his ancestral home in rural Transkei, and his handlers have announced his withdrawal from public view. Even while he lives, unseemly squabbles have flared over the TV rights to his funeral. Since he officially retired in 2004, Mr. Mandela has concentrated on his foundation, the charity that is already his earthly embodiment. It owns his archives and mementos and controls his endorsements, which it uses to raise money for social-justice projects. There is even brand Mandelaa fashion line called 46664 after his prisoner number. The clothes feature an embroidered outline of his palm. Meanwhile, his grandchildren are launching ...

An Irvine couple who suspected their 15-year-old son of smoking turned to a man believed to be relied on in their church to violently discipline children, authorities said. The parents asked Paul Kim, 39, to discipline their son after finding a lighter in his possession, dropping the boy off at Kim's Chino Hills home with permission for the beating, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Bachmann said Saturday. Kim hit the child with a metal pole about a dozen times, causing severe bruising on his legs, according to Bachmann. The pole was about an inch in diameter, investigators said. An adult at the boy's school saw the bruises and called Irvine police, who in ...

A couple of days ago Conunderground.com was the first to point out that the circumstances surrounding the crash of the top secret RQ170 Sentinel drone simply didnt add up. And we were right! The story continues to develop and it doesnt look good! To recap, first we were told that Iran mightve shot it down and then the story changed to the drone crashed on Iranian soil Unfortunately this is no the first time this happened, I also questioned the initial official reports of the Osama Bin Laden raid and slowly but surely as more info was leaked to the public all those questions proved to be valid and the current reports are pretty much diametrically ...

Ron Paul isnt backing down from his position that the U.S. has provoked terrorists through foreign military occupation and that officials tried to capitalize on Sept. 11 attacks. Think of what happened after 9/11, the minute before there was any assessment, there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq, and so the war drums beat, Paul said Thursday night before a packed room of more than 1,000 students and supporters. Thats exactly what theyre doing now with Iran. *** His libertarian ideals have struck a cord with many, but conservatives remain deeply wary of Pauls foreign policy positions, including his ...

Hot on the heels of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in Iowa, Ron Paul is rallying the youth vote and drawing big crowds. Speaking to a standing-room-only gathering of more than 1,000 college-age students in Ames, Iowa, Thursday night, Paul declared again that the war on drugs had been a failure, reminding the audience that more people had died in preventing people from using drugs than from the drugs themselves. Im just not frightened by a free society, said Paul. Im frightened by those who prevent us from having a free society. Thats where the real threats are. The Paul campaign has picked up steam and has its sights set on new national ...

On Dec. 7, 2012, six Republican candidates for president (Rep. Ron Paul was not invited) appeared before the Republican Jewish Coalition (NRC) to campaign for Christian votes. There are Jewish Republicans, to be sure, but not enough to make a difference in this primary contest. No, the real prize that drew the candidates to the NRC event were the 40 perecent of GOP primary voters who are declared "born-again" Christians who fervently believe that Israel can do no wrong and that it is their religious duty to support any and all Israeli policies as a prerequisite to hasten the "Day of Judgment." The speeches were mostly filled with hysterical criticism of President ...

Gingrich spokesman defends controversial Palestinian remark Post Date: 2011-12-10 13:43:31 by A K A Stone

(CNN) -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stands by his support for a Palestinian state, his spokesman said Saturday, despite his comment about an "invented Palestinian people" that has drawn fire from leaders in the West Bank and from a GOP rival. Gingrich backs a negotiated peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, said his spokesman, R.C. Hammond. But the Gingrich camp made no apology for the remark -- which some Palestinian leaders declared "racist" -- saying the former House speaker was simply referencing "decades of complex history." Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat, who has negotiated in talks with Israel and the ...

Speaking in Iowa Thursday evening, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said that the Bush administration were gleeful after the September 11 attacks because it gave them an excuse to invade Iraq. Just think of what happened after 9/11. Immediately before there was any assessment there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq, the Texas congressman said. He also suggested that officials are currently setting the stage for an invasion of Iran. CBS adds: On Face the Nation last month, Paul said that while the average American didnt cause the Sept. 11 attacks, if you have a flawed policy it may influence it. ...

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is going on the offense for his father, GOP presidential candidate and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), claiming the tea party mantle and saying his dads opponents simply do not represent the tea party, the conservative movement, or the type of change our country desperately needs in 2012. In a Thursday op-ed for the Des Moines Register, Paul says that both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich both have past positions that are disqualifying. Both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich supported the outrageous $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, bailouts one of the most unpopular government programs in American history, even according to ...

Inequality: The Eternal Wellspring of Collective Power Writing in the Wall Street Journal this week, Alan Reynolds of the Cato Institute made a very interesting point about income inequality. He notes that the ostensibly shocking Congressional Budget Office report that concluded The share of income received by the top 1% grew from about 8% in 1979 to over 17% in 2007 has been presented in a profoundly disingenuous manner, because if the report hadnt abruptly terminated in 2007, it would have noticed the share of after-tax income of the top 1% had dropped right back to 11.3% by 2009. The larger truth, Reynolds notes, is that ...

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Newt Gingrich is ready to hit back at Mitt Romney. Gingrich's campaign is holding a phone call Friday to have Iowa supporters attack Romney, the former Massachusetts governor. Romney's campaign started it Thursday, assailing Gingrich as irrational and unfit to lead, and Romney allies started airing a TV attack ad against Gingrich in Iowa. It's part of a $3.1 million campaign by Romney supporters. Gingrich, the former House speaker, insisted Thursday he would stay positive. But now his campaign goes on the offensive, using former Iowa Rep. Greg Ganske and Iowa state Rep. Linda Upmeyer to criticize Romney.
Charlotte Prepping for Occupy Wall Street at DNC Post Date: 2011-12-09 17:37:17 by A K A Stone

In John Heilemann's cover story "2012=1968?," he wonders whether Occupy Wall Street protesters will do to Charlotte's Democratic National Convention in the summer of 2012 what demonstrators did to the Chicago DNC in 1968. The North Carolina city, sometimes called the "Wall Street of the South," is not taking any chances, and is already working to pass an ordinance that would make occupying downtown spaces with tents a "public nuisance," in addition to banning "noxious substances," padlocks, and other camping equipment. The fact that it would knock out the city's current overnight demonstrators is an added bonus. Charlotte Mayor Anthony ...

Detainment Camps Going Live: FEMA Seeking Subcontractors to Provide “Temporary Camp Services” In All 50 States
For the better part of two decades FEMA detention camps were believed to be a figment of tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists. As more information over the years has been made available through alternative news researchers like Alex Jones in his full length documentary Police State 4 and former governor Jesse Venutra’s FEMA camp exposé, it is becoming increasingly clear that the government has been taking steps for quite some time to ensure a rapid and effective response in the event of a national disaster or U.S. military deployment on American soil.

"I think it's going to be all in fun from those who support the second amendment and those who don't," said gun club member Richard Jones. "Whether ...
