Marine biologist could get 20 years in prison for feeding whales

A California marine biologist is facing up to 20 years in prison and half a million dollars in fines for allegedly feeding a group of killer whales and then altering footage of the incident and lying to authorities. In addition to her carrying out maritime research, Nancy Black operates the popular Monterey Bay Whale Watch tours and has been featured on PBS, National Geographic and Animal Planet. But on Wednesday, Black was charged with four violations of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Black's attorneys say she was only doing scientific research. If she's convicted, Black could face up to 20 years in prison and half a million dollars in fines. She could also be fined up to $10 ...

Body In River Turns Out To Be Dead Cat In Coffin

CHICAGO (CBS) — Fire crews rushed to the North Branch of the Chicago River near Division Street Friday, after someone reported there was a body in the water. There was indeed a body in the water. But the body was in a coffin, and it belonged to a cat. About 10:50 a.m., fire crews responded to the river near Division and Halsted streets in response to a report of a body in the water. Fire personnel, according to a dispatch report, reported that “if it’s a body, it’s a recovery,” meaning the body in the water was not alive. Fire Media Affairs reported the object found in the water was a small coffin with a dead house cat inside. It was likely the result of a ...

BUSTED: Iowa Republican Party Caught Adding Votes For Romney

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Caucus night was chaotic in many places, with hundreds of voters, candidates showing up and the throngs of media who followed. The world's eyes were on Iowa. But in the quiet town of Moulton, Appanoose County, a caucus of 53 people may just blow up the results. Edward True, 28, of Moulton, said he helped count the votes and jotted the results down on a piece of paper to post to his Facebook page. He said when he checked to make sure the Republican Party of Iowa got the count right, he said he was shocked to find they hadn't. "When Mitt Romney won Iowa by eight votes and I've got a 20-vote discrepancy here, that right there says Rick Santorum won ...

The true author of Ron Paul's racist newsletters

When asked by the media about racist newsletters distributed under his name, GOP Presidential contender Ron Paul has disavowed and disowned the content, claiming he never wrote them. We now know this to be true, because the real author has been found. The offending passages were written by James B. Powell, who is now a high-ranking director at Forbes magazine, whose writers and editor-in-chief, Steve Forbes, regularly appear on the weekly Fox News program Forbes on Fox. Many people on Fox News have referred to the newsletters as baggage that would keep Paul from winning the GOP nomination. Now we know the passages were authored by a top member of an affiliate of Fox News. Sometimes satire ...

Vendetta: Newt Gingrich Has Made It His Personal Mission To Destroy Mitt Romney
Post Date: 2012-01-05 11:23:40 by Capitalist Eric

Newt Gingrich is so angry right now that his head just might explode. Less than a month ago, Gingrich had a massive lead in Iowa. At one point he was averaging 31 percent support in Iowa polls. But after an unprecedented onslaught of negative advertising his numbers began to drop like a rock. Ultimately, he finished in fourth place in Iowa with only 13 percent of the vote. Pro-Romney "Super PACs" spent over $3 million on negative ads that just ripped Gingrich to shreds. Of course considering his track record, that is not hard to do. But Newt Gingrich is not someone that is just going to "forgive and forget". Gingrich honestly believed that he was going to win Iowa. In ...

Acting Like A King Isn't Among The President's Duties

Leadership: A spokesman says the president "can't wait for Congress to act" and promised that he's "going to take action." This is the president who was "ready to rule" in 2008. Is he an elected chief executive or an emperor? In November 2008, shortly after Barack Obama was elected president, Valerie Jarrett, co-chair of his transition team, appeared on "Meet the Press." She told host Tom Brokaw that "Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one." Shouldn't someone who had reached the political heights that Jarrett had reached know that kings rule but presidents are elected to serve and are accountable to ...

Obama to Name Richard Cordray as Consumer Chief in Defiance of Republicans
Post Date: 2012-01-04 11:44:48 by Brian S

President Barack Obama will install Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with a recess appointment today, testing the limits of his executive authority to fill the post without Senate approval, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said. Cordray, the former attorney general of Ohio, accompanied Obama on Air Force One for a trip to the state where the president plans to make the announcement. Republicans used procedural moves to block Cordray’s confirmation by the Senate last month. Obama, who is making confrontation with congressional Republicans a part of his re- election strategy, has said filling the consumer bureau post is critical to ...

Palin: GOP better not marginalize Ron Paul and his supporters

Sarah Palin gave her analysis of the Iowa caucuses tonight, refusing to give any single candidate anything close to an endorsement. She also noted rather passionately though, that the GOP had better not marginalize Ron Paul and his supporters after tonight because their fiscal concerns are very legitimate and the GOP had better work with them. She also noted her expectation that Bachmann will probably drop out in coming weeks, but also made sure to tell people to quit taking shots as this isn’t something personal against Bachmann, but simply her opinion. The Greatness of Ron Paul

A dispute has broken out among fans of Ron Paul's non-interventionist foreign policy about whether he's a strategic liability. Paul, says Kevin Drum, is such a "toxic, far-right, crackpot messenger" that "the only thing he's accomplishing is to make non-interventionism even more of a fringe view in American politics than it already is." It's certainly true that Paul's hawkish critics are using his weirder ideas and checkered past to try and make non-interventionism synonymous with creepiness. But, whatever their success, Paul is making one contribution to the foreign policy debate that could have enduring value. It doesn't lie in the substance ...

Iowa caucus entrance polls: Romney, Paul and Santorum in 3-way race

UPDATED 8:33 p.m ET Doors have closed at caucus precincts across Iowa, and early results from CBS News entrance polls show a three-way race for the Republican presidential nomination among Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Entrance polling reveals that Paul's voters are male, younger, and many are first-time caucus goers. Romney's voters are looking for someone who can beat President Obama, while Santorum's voters looking for a true conservative. Much data has yet to be collected, and those arriving earliest may not reflect the total caucus voters. The precincts closed their doors at 7 p.m. CT, leaving Republican voters in the Hawkeye State to be the first to weigh in ...

Judaism Fits With Economic Conservatism, Not Liberalism

Judaism Fits With Economic Conservatism, Not Liberalism Yossi Gestetner Sunday, Sixty Minutes interviewed Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who is Jewish. The reporter asked him if there is something in the Jewish faith -- such as helping the poor -- that pushes Jews to vote for Democrats. The reporter went on to quote an unnamed blogger who attacked Cantor for "Abandoning the poor and cutting taxes for the rich... Judaism mandates that the community take care of those in need." The above statement goes with the assumption that the only way of giving charity is through government. The set-up of the interview goes with the falsehood that Republicans are anti-poor, ...

Why the Left Fears You

Why the Left Fears You By James Lewis Obama is a cuckoo's nestling, a little gift from the obsessively anti-American left, who has been dropped deceptively into our mainstream politics. Cuckoos are called "brood parasites" because they drop their eggs into strangers' nests, to leave the hard work of incubating and raising the young bird to a deceived mother bird. Deception happens all the time in the animal kingdom, like all the times my cat fakes me out by mewing at the door, only to stand there and sniff the air when I get up and open up for her. Cuckoos have deception built into their genes. Obama is himself a grand deception. He used to look arrogant beyond ...

Rand Paul On A Ron Paul Third-Party Run: "Don't Think It's A Good Idea" [Full Thread]

"You know, I don't think it's a good idea," Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told Paul Westcott on New Hampshire's WGIR-AM while campaigning on behalf of his father. "Because people have been asking me for a couple years now if the Tea Party is going to stay within the Republican Party and I've been saying that the Tea Party has power and influence by primarily keeping Republicans and making them more consistent with their platform and their principles." "But if the Tea Party branches off it will be a certain election for President Obama and there hasn't been any evidence that third parties -- look at Perot, which was the biggest movement we've had ...

Santorum’s Nephew Endorses Ron Paul, Disses “Uncle Rick”

If you want another big-government politician who supports the status quo to run our country, you should vote for my uncle, Rick Santorum. America is based on a strong belief in individual liberty. My uncle’s interventionist policies, both domestic and foreign, stem from his irrational fear of freedom not working. It is not the government’s job to dictate to individuals how they must live. The Constitution was designed to protect individual liberty. My Uncle Rick cannot fathom a society in which people cooperate and work with each other freely. When Republicans were spending so much money under President Bush, my uncle was right there along with them as a senator. The reason we ...

Palin On Michele Bachmann: It's Not Her Time

"As for Michelle Bachmann. She has a lot to offer, also, but I don't think it is her time this go around. And I believe that unless she, too, wants to spend her own money or borrowing money and perhaps go into debt. Which heaven forbid, you do that to your family? Perhaps she is one, too, who would start saying 'supporters of mine, why don't we coalesce around one of the other candidates and let's move together as a team to get that right primary candidate chosen?'" Sarah Palin said on FOX News today.

Taking to Twitter, Murdoch Signals Support for Santorum

The media mogul Rupert Murdoch signaled his support for Rick Santorum on Monday evening, calling him the “only candidate with genuine big vision” for the United States. His comments were significant not only because Mr. Murdoch controls Fox News Channel and The Wall Street Journal, but also because they were made on Twitter, a Web site that allowed for his support to be forwarded far and wide on the eve of the Iowa caucuses. Mr. Santorum was a paid analyst for Fox News before he announced his bid for the presidency last year. Mr. Murdoch seemed to stop short of an outright endorsement. “Can’t resist this tweet,” he wrote, “but all Iowans think about Rick ...

The Ron Paul phenomenon — in one graph

Whether or not Texas Rep. Ron Paul win the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday, he is, without question, the candidate that draws the most reaction — both positive and negative. Paul’s backers would, literally, walk over hot coals for the man. His detractors tend to roll their eyes when talk of Paul as a serious candidate is broached. (The latter sentiment was summed up nicely by Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen who headlined a recent piece: “Seriously, Iowa? Ron Paul?”) But, love him or hate him, Paul is the most interesting candidate in the field — not a bad distinction for a man who as recently as three years ago was little known outside of his home district in ...

RIP: Tax credit for ethanol

RIP: Tax credit for ethanol Rick Moran The wasteful and damaging tax subsidy for ethanol production has expired after 30 years. The remarkable thing about this is that it's political season in Iowa - the capitol of ethanol subsidies - and candidates have not been bragging about their support for it. It appears that a coalition of the right and left may have doomed this example of corporate welfare, although the production of ethanol will continue - thus keeping the cost of food high. New York Times: Nearly 40 percent of the United States corn crop goes to ethanol and byproducts, including animal feed. The Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said, ...

Kentucky to Release Several Thousand Felons to Balance Budget

Kentucky to Release Several Thousand Felons to Balance Budget America already has one of the weakest and ineffective penal systems in the world. You don’t have to be a convict to realize that a 10 year prison term generally means 2-3 years in lock up. In Kentucky, it could mean even less time in jail. Like most states, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is facing a financial shortfall in their operating budget. They are trying to look to various avenues of reducing spending and one of those they decided on is the state prison system. In a move designed to save nearly $42 million, the commonwealth will release 990 convicted felons on Tuesday and then release around 300 more each month ...

Occupy Protest Follows 123rd Annual Rose Parade

(01-02) 12:55 PST Pasadena, Calif. (AP) -- Hundreds of anti-Wall Street protesters have rallied near Pasadena's City Hall after holding a demonstration on the heels of the annual Rose Parade. Marchers carrying a giant banner and a homemade octopus to symbolize corporate greed followed part of the parade route Monday as the 123rd Tournament of Roses ended. The demonstration has been peaceful, and no arrests have been made. Organizers of Occupy the Rose Parade estimate the number of protesters at around 5,000 but police say it's around 400. Authorities say the other people in the street were parade spectators leaving their sidewalk viewing spots.

Iowa Officials Brace For Occupy Protests

Republicans across Iowa are bracing for trouble on Tuesday, concerned that caucus sites will be the next stop for the Occupy protesters who've staged demonstrations and disruptions at election events across the state. Occupy leaders say they're not planning to interfere with the voting, though they expect actions leading up the vote at candidates' headquarters and afterward at victory parties. But even if 99 percent of the 99 percenters comply, the prospect of scattered protesters inciting confrontations with Republican voters has people from both camps on edge. "Tempers can flare, and people can start to get out of control," said Jack Whitver, a state senator and ...
