If Mitt Romney Is So 'Electable,' Then Why Didn’t Republicans Nominate Him in 2008? Post Date: 2012-01-17 13:32:59 by Capitalist Eric

Republicans sure have short memories. It was just four years ago that they went to the polls in the primaries and elected the most "moderate" and "electable" candidate they could find in the hope that they had a man who was palatable to the general population. Their reward for their unprincipled pragmatism was an ass-kicking in the general election that few Americans will ever forget. John McCain and Sarah Palin certainly wont forget it. Four years later, having learned absolutely nothing from the election of 2008, Republican voters are once again lining up behind the most moderate and supposedly "electable" candidate that they can find in the pragmatic ...
EVIL Facebook Gives Politico Deep Access to Users’ Political Sentiments Post Date: 2012-01-17 07:01:06 by A K A Stone

Counting Twitter mentions would have you believe that Ron Paul is the most popular Republican candidate in the ongoing U.S. primaries. Umm, right. But some social media analysis of politics is going beyond that. A partnership between Facebook and Politico announced today is one of the more far-reaching efforts. It will consist of sentiment analysis reports and voting-age user surveys, accompanied by stories by Politico reporters. Most notably, the Facebook-Politico data set will include Facebook users private status messages and comments. While that may alarm some people, Facebook and Politico say the entire process is automated and no Facebook employees read the posts. Rather, ...
Gov. Scott Walker (R) Recall Looks Increasingly Certain, Overshoots Requirement By Nearly 200,000 Signatures Post Date: 2012-01-16 19:17:05 by Brian S

If Wisconsins Democrats are to be believed, the recall of Gov. Scott Walker (R) is on and just needs to be made official. With Tuesdays deadline fast approaching, The New York Times reports that Wisconsins activists are prepared to submit about 720,000 petition signatures, far surpassing the 540,000 needed to trigger a recall election later this year. Before the election can proceed, the states election board will have to build a $100,000 database of registered voters and check each petition signature against the list. Assuming that more than 540,000 entries are valid, Walker will face the possibility of being only the third governor in U.S. history to be removed ...
White House Won’t Back Anti-Piracy Measures That Would Censor the Internet Post Date: 2012-01-16 12:22:40 by Brian S

The Obama administration wont back legislation to combat online piracy if it encourages censorship, undermines cybersecurity or disrupts the structure of the Internet, three White House technology officials said. Their statement, posted yesterday on the White House website, was a response to online petitions on legislative proposals to combat online piracy. The movie and music industries support such measures as a means of cracking down on theft. While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk or undermines ...
Ron Paul, America’s Last Chance Post Date: 2012-01-16 12:12:24 by Capitalist Eric

America has one last chance, and it is a very slim one. Americans can elect Ron Paul President, or they can descend into tyranny. Why is Ron Paul Americas last chance? Because he is the only candidate who is not owned lock, stock, and barrel by the military-security complex, Wall Street, and the Israel Lobby. All of the others, including President Obama, are owned by exactly the same interest groups. There are no differences between them. Every candidate except Ron Paul stands for war and a police state, and all have demonstrated their complete and total subservience to Israel. The fact that there is no difference between them is made perfectly clear by the absence of ...

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman will drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination today, a campaign adviser confirmed Sunday night. The news of the decision comes the same day Huntsman received the endorsement of The State, the newspaper in Columbia, S.C., and nearly a week after finishing third in the New Hampshire primary, where he had focused his campaign. The campaign adviser spoke on condition of anonymity because Huntsman plans to make the official announcement. Matt David, a spokesman for Huntsman, told TheNew York Times that Huntsman will endorse former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Huntsman, 51, appears to have received ...

In what may be the most clear example of Republicans hoping for the assassination of President Obama, Kansas Speaker of the House Mike ONeal sent an email to his Republican colleagues containing a shocking personal message with Bible verse Psalm 109 that he uses as a prayer for the assassination of President Obama. Heres the email message At last I can honestly voice a Biblical prayer for our president! Look it up it is word for word! Let us all bow our heads and pray. Brothers and Sisters, can I get an AMEN? AMEN!!!!!! Let his days be few; and let another take his office May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. May his children be ...

CRYBABY: Bachmann wants pro-Gingrich radio ad featuring her to come down Post Date: 2012-01-15 11:07:34 by A K A Stone

Michele Bachmann wants a radio ad that she thinks implies her endorsement of Newt Gingrich pulled off the air in South Carolina. A lawyer for the Minnesota congresswoman sent a letter to radio stations Friday night saying that a spot being aired by the pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning our Future uses a clip from an introduction Bachmann delivered when Gingrich fundraised for her during a previous congressional campaign. The text of that speech, she says, was provided by Gingrichs staff. WOF has edited a recording of Congresswoman Bachmanns introductory remarks at a congressional event, held to raise money for her re-election to the US Congress, where Speaker ...
Microsoft confirms UEFI fears, locks down ARM devices Post Date: 2012-01-15 11:01:49 by A K A Stone

At the beginning of December, we warned the Copyright Office that operating system vendors would use UEFI secure boot anticompetitively, by colluding with hardware partners to exclude alternative operating systems. As Glyn Moody points out, Microsoft has wasted no time in revising its Windows Hardware Certification Requirements to effectively ban most alternative operating systems on ARM-based devices that ship with Windows 8. The Certification Requirements define (on page 116) a "custom" secure boot mode, in which a physically present user can add signatures for alternative operating systems to the system's signature database, allowing the system to boot those operating ...

Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) visited an unusual forum this week to ask gamers to stand together against the Stop Online Piracy Act. Posting in an anti-SOPA thread at the official League of Legends message board, Congressman Polis admitted to being an avid gamer and called for his fellow LoL players to stand up and be heard: Hi, this is Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado. As a member of the League of Legends community (partial to Anivia and Maokai), and as someone who made his living as an Internet entrepreneur before being elected to Congress, Im greatly concerned about the future of the Internet and gaming if Congress doesnt wake up. Paterno was unsure how to handle abuse tip Post Date: 2012-01-14 23:52:24 by Refinersfire

Jan 14 (Reuters) - Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State University football coach fired in the fallout from child sex abuse allegations against former assistant Jerry Sandusky, says he was unsure how to handle the first report about Sandusky that reached him in 2002. So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didnt work out that way. He was referring to a report he received from an assistant coach, Mike McQueary, who said he had seen Sandusky abusing a boy in a Penn State locker room shower. Paterno said McQueary did not provide him with specific details about what he saw. You know, ...
Federal Contractor Monitored Social Network Sites Post Date: 2012-01-14 16:00:03 by buckeroo

WASHINGTON The Department of Homeland Security paid a contractor in 2009 to monitor social networking sites like Facebook, blogs and reader comments on a news article to see how the residents of Standish, Mich., were reacting to a proposal to move detainees from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to a local prison there, according to newly disclosed documents. While it has long been known that the department monitors the Internet for information about emerging threats to public safety like a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, the documents show that its Social Networking/Media Capability program, at least in an early stage, was also focused on public reaction to ...

(CBS) Joe Paterno was never fired. Dont believe me? Ill let Steve Garban, chair of the Penn State Board of Trustees, and John Surma, vice chairman of the Penn State Board of Trustees, tell you themselves: Coach Paterno remains employed by the University as a tenured faculty member, they said in a statement released Thursday. The details of his retirement are being worked out and will be made public when they are finalized. Generally speaking, the University intends to honor the terms of his employment contract and is treating him financially as if he had retired at the end of the 2011 football season. Thats right. Paterno is still getting paid. ...
Russian Ship To Pump Fuel To Ice-Bound Alaska Port Post Date: 2012-01-14 13:00:06 by Brian S

A Russian ship carrying vital fuel to a remote Alaskan port could finally deliver its load Saturday after battling through some 300 miles (480 km) of Arctic ice, the US Coast Guard said. Helped by a US Coast Guard ice-breaker, the Russian tanker Renda was within seven miles of the port of Nome by late Friday, but was proceeding very cautiously for its final approach. Theyre trying to identify the best course and the best place to navigate into so that the Renda can get as close as possible but that shell also be able to leave at the end of this, said spokeswoman Veronica Colbath. Were almost there but were not completely there yet, and ...
Obama's New Scheme to Control the Internet and Spy on Americans Post Date: 2012-01-14 12:47:45 by jwpegler

The Obama administration has been quietly plotting new controls on the Internet, including an ill-advised scheme to issue everyone a single Internet ID. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announced that the government is drafting a plan called the "National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace" to centralize efforts to create a "trusted" identity eco-system. Locke said that one of the goals of the program is to reduce or eliminate the need for people to memorize multiple passwords. The plan will rely on private identity providers, rather than government to issue ids and run the system. There are several problems with the Obama's Administration plan: ...
Judge rejects GOP candidates' request to be added to Virginia ballot Post Date: 2012-01-13 18:33:47 by buckeroo

A federal judge has ruled that Rick Perry and three other Republican presidential candidates will not be added to Virginia's primary ballot.
District Court Judge John Gibney Jr. rejected their requests, arguing that they filed their challenges to Virginia's stringent ballot requirements too late.
"They played the game, they lost, and then they complained about the rules," he said.
The decision means -- for now, anyway -- that Perry, Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman and Newt Gingrich will be left off the March 6 ballot after failing to meet a state requirement to collect 10,000 signatures in support of their respective campaigns.
The judge said the campaigns had from July to ...
Newt in self-destruct mode Post Date: 2012-01-13 18:00:24 by buckeroo

For a few moments on Iowa caucus night, it looked like no more damage could be done to Newton Leroy Gingrich. Mitt Romney and Ron Pauls assaults had knocked him from first to fourth, made him the states least popular Republican and stripped him of his national frontrunner status. Those who knew Gingrich, however, never lost faith: The havoc of others was nothing compared to the ruin he could bring on himself. Gingrich did not disappoint. With all the warmth and charm of a machete, he slashed his way to New Hampshire to carve slices, not only from Bain Capital, but also from capitalism. Displaying a recklessness and thoughtlessness that chilled even his own admirers, he put GOP ...
Obama Asks Congress for Power to Consolidate Six Trade, Commerce Agencies Post Date: 2012-01-13 12:05:10 by Brian S

President Barack Obama called on Congress to give him authority to streamline the executive branch and make it easier for businesses to tap government resources by consolidating six agencies dealing with trade and commerce. We live in a 21st century economy, but weve still got a government organized for the 20th century, Obama said in the text of remarks at the White House. With this authority, wed help businesses grow; save businesses time; and save taxpayer dollars. He asked lawmakers to restore power to reorganize agencies granted to presidents in the past. Congress would then be able to give an up-or-down vote on the plan.

(Reuters) - A Cincinnati landlord found to have violated state anti-discrimination laws after she hung a "white only" sign outside her swimming pool lost an appeal with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission on Thursday. The ruling clears the way for the case to be referred to the state attorney general's office for possible state civil charges and the possibility of being forced to pay compensatory and punitive damages. The commission ruled the sign, which read "Public Swimming Pool, White Only," violated state housing discrimination laws, and dismissed landlord Jamie Hein's claim that it was simply a decorative antique. The commission's ruling followed a ...

An Arson Attack Last Year On Cars In A Predominately Jewish Neighborhood Is Being Investigated As An Insurance Scam Instead Of A Hate Crime Post Date: 2012-01-12 18:19:02 by Brian S

(JTA) -- An arson attack last year on cars in a predominately Jewish neighborhood of New York reportedly is being investigated as an insurance scam instead of a hate crime. The attack on Nov. 11, the day after Kristallnacht commemorations, included the spray-painting with anti-Semitic graffiti of the nearby sidewalk and park benches. Elected officials and Jewish leaders roundly condemned the attack. Police sources told local media, including the New York Daily News and the New York Post, that the cars were likely set alight in order to collect insurance money, and the graffiti was spray-painted in the area to make the attack look more like a realistic hate crime. The owners of the cars ...

Freedom of speech might allow journalists to get away with a lot in America, but the Department of Homeland Security is on the ready to make sure that the government is keeping dibs on who is saying what. Under the National Operations Center (NOC)s Media Monitoring Initiative that came out of DHS headquarters in November, Washington has the written permission to retain data on users of social media and online networking platforms. Specifically, the DHS announced the NCO and its Office of Operations Coordination and Planning (OPS) can collect personal information from news anchors, journalists, reporters or anyone who may use traditional and/or social media in real time to keep ...

UNDATED - There's a report that Hostess Brands, the maker of Wonder Bread and Twinkies, is preparing to refile for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just two years after emerging. A spokesman for the privately held company declined to comment on the Wall Street Journal report. The newspaper says people familiar with the matter said the company is facing a cash crunch with more than $860 million in debt, high labor expenses and rising ingredient costs. When the company, then called Interstate Bakeries, filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004, it blamed low sales and high fixed costs. It emerged in February 2009. Hostess Brands employs about 19,000 workers and operates in 49 states. ...
