Patriots heartlessly release Tiquan Underwood on the eve of Super Bowl XLVI Post Date: 2012-02-04 23:20:27 by A K A Stone

Tiquan Underwood, the guy who loved being a Patriot so much that he did that to his hair, was released by the team on Saturday, just hours before the Super Bowl. It's callous and it's cold-blooded, but that's football, and that's Bill Belichick. I'm sure that Underwood is emotionally devastated, but that's a head coach's job. If he feels like another player might help a little more on Sunday, even if it's just for one play, then it's the coach's job to make that decision. Feelings aren't a part of it. Underwood probably didn't expect this, but he's no stranger to being released, either. It's the third time the Patriots have cut him ...
Gingrich: 'While I want your vote, I need your prayers' (NEWT CRIES) Post Date: 2012-02-04 22:53:23 by calcon

LAS VEGAS -- Newt Gingrich appeared to wipe a tear away Friday night after singing along to a moving rendition of "God Bless America" during a prayer meeting. "While I want your vote, I need your prayers," the candidate told a congregation of approximately 500 people. "I hope that both Callista and I can be in your prayers because we will need them every day that we serve this country." Other than attending Mass in the morning and holding a media avail tonight, Gingrich - who until now had maintained a busy public schedule every voting day - has nothing else on his calendar Saturday. The candidate says he has the "hope" of finishing second in the ...
U.S. Counties With Thriving Small Businesses Have Healthier Residents Post Date: 2012-02-04 13:42:57 by jwpegler

Counties and parishes with a greater concentration of small, locally-owned businesses have healthier populations -- with lower rates of mortality, obesity and diabetes -- than do those that rely on large companies with "absentee" owners, according to a national study by sociologists at LSU and Baylor University. What stands out about this research is that we often think of the economic benefits and job growth that small business generates, but we don't think of the social benefits to small communities," said Troy C. Blanchard, Ph.D., lead author and associate professor of sociology at LSU. "This study highlights not only the economic benefits of small business, but ...

ROCKVILLE, Md. - A flyer sent home with some high school students in Montgomery County, Md., is causing consternation among parents. The flyer is from a group called PFOX, Parents And Friends Of Ex-Gays And Gays. In the one-page message, the group tells teenagers that no one is "born gay", and people can choose their sexual orientation. Karen Yount-Merrell, a licensed, clinical social worker, got one of the flyers when her son came home with his report card from Einstein High School. "I don't like it," Yount-Merrell declared. "Everything in this flyer make its sound like the goal is to be [an] EX-gay, [or an EX]-lesbian. It is not embracing of a different ...

BofA, JPMorgan Chase Sued by New York Over Mortgage Registry Post Date: 2012-02-03 17:54:09 by Capitalist Eric

Bank of America Corp., Wells Fargo & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. were sued by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over the use of a mortgage database that the state said led to improper foreclosures. The banks use of the database, known as MERS, misled homeowners, undermined foreclosure proceedings and created uncertainty about ownership interests in properties, the state said in the complaint filed today in New York State Supreme Court in Brooklyn. The banks created the MERS system as an end-run around the property recording system, to facilitate the rapid securitization and sale of mortgages, Schneiderman said in a statement. Once the mortgages ...

Donald Trump said Thursday that he's been impressed by Mitt Romney's debate prowess and believes he could easily beat President Obama in November, as he explained his expected endorsement of the former Massachusetts governor. The real estate mogul is expected to make his support for Romney official Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas. He spoke briefly with reporters beforehand, and said that even though he "never knew" Romney before the race began, he's come to know him in recent months. "His general attitude and the last two debates were very impressive," Trump said. He also cited Romney's position on China, calling the former Massachusetts governor ...
Republicans Push To Stop Automatic Spending Cuts Post Date: 2012-02-02 12:08:22 by Brian S

WASHINGTON | Thu Feb 2, 2012 11:49am EST (Reuters) - The U.S. military would be spared from automatic spending cuts set for next year under a proposal some top Senate Republicans offered on Thursday that instead would save money by reducing the federal workforce. Senator John McCain, senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee, assistant Senate Republican leader Jon Kyl and four others offered legislation that would eliminate the first installment of $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts over a decade. The legislation faces an uphill battle in the Senate, led by Democrats likely to oppose the federal work force cuts. The White House also opposes efforts to circumvent the ...
Sandia Labs' bullet doesn't miss Scientists patent self-guided bullet Post Date: 2012-02-02 00:14:43 by A K A Stone

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Engineers at Sandia National Laboratories have invented a bullet that guides itself to the target. Sandia has wide expertise at miniature technology, and the bullet works like a tiny guided missile. The patented design doesn't shoot straight. Instead of a spiral rotation, the bullet twists and turns to guide itself towards a laser directed point. It can make up to thirty corrections per second while in the air. Jim Jones, distinguished member of technical staff, and his team of engineers at Sandia Labs think the .50-caliber bullets would work well with military machine guns so soldiers could hit their mark faster and with precision. "We've tested ...
Did Health Care Reform Hurt The Private Insurance Part Of Medicare? Apparently Not Post Date: 2012-02-01 19:18:46 by Brian S

The Obama administration announced Wednesday that the Medicare Advantage program, which allows seniors to receive health coverage through a private insurer, is enjoying lower costs and more customers as a result of the health care reform law. Medicare Advantage enrollment has risen 10 percent over the last year while average premiums have fallen by 7 percent, said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. She also pointed out that similar improvements were seen the previous year. The figures bolster President Obamas defense of his signature achievement, and for Democrats it has the added bonus of refuting earlier Republican warnings that Obamacare would ...

Co-founders of online U.S. payment service PayPal, now owned by eBay Inc, donated to the Super PAC funding group supporting Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, the group Endorse Liberty disclosed on Tuesday. PayPal co-founders Peter Thiel and Luke Nosek and Scott Banister, an early adviser and board member, put their support behind the Endorse Liberty Super PAC, alongside Internet advertising veteran Stephen Oskoui and entrepreneur Jeffrey Harmon, who founded Endorse Liberty in November. Texas congressman Ron Paul, a libertarian, has been an unconventional candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, advocating an isolationist brand of foreign policy and a $1 ...
Indiana gov. signs right-to-work bill, state becomes Rust Belt’s 1st to enact labor union law Post Date: 2012-02-01 18:41:01 by We The People

INDIANAPOLIS Indiana is the first Rust Belt state to enact the contentious right-to-work labor law prohibiting labor contracts that require workers to pay union representation fees, after Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the bill Wednesday afternoon. The Senate approved the measure a few hours earlier Wednesday, following weeks of discord that saw House Democrats boycott the Legislature and thousands of protesters gather at the Statehouse. Seven years of evidence and experience ultimately demonstrated that Indiana did need a right-to-work law to capture jobs for which, despite our highly rated business climate, we are not currently being considered, Daniels said ...
EXCLUSIVE: Mitt Romney to Receive Secret Service Protection Post Date: 2012-02-01 00:18:08 by Brian S

TAMPA Mitt Romneys presidential campaign has been informed that it will start receiving Secret Service protection on Thursday, two campaign sources and a senior Republican tell ABC News. Secret Service protection is being given to the campaign not because of a specific threat but because of the increase in crowd sizes as the primary season has progressed over the past few weeks, according to the sources, who refused to be identified because they dont have authority to comment on such matters publicly. The Secret Service is charged with protecting presidential candidates in addition to the president himself, and providing protection to a candidate before he secures a ...
Abortion enslaves women in order to free men from responsibility Post Date: 2012-01-31 23:19:26 by A K A Stone

January 31, 2012 (BryanKemper.com) - I recently released a small statement about how abortion is oppressive to women; a couple of people asked me how I can find abortion to be oppressive if it is their free choice, so I decided to expand on my thought. Here is the original quote that spawned the questions I received: The abolition of abortion is the only true path to equal rights for all women. Abortion is a violent, destructive cycle of oppression against mothers. How can we truly call women free when this evil is welcomed into our society? Abortion is oppressive because it is a mechanism that allows men to be free of responsibility; they now have an easy out when ...

U.S. Deficit To Top $1 Trillion, Smallest Since ’09 Post Date: 2012-01-31 15:11:47 by Brian S

The federal budget deficit will top $1 trillion for a fourth straight year, congressional budget analysts said Tuesday, but is likely to be the smallest since the Great Recession began taking a toll on the budget in 2009. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected that the gap between government spending and tax collections would continue to fall, dropping sharply in 2013 and through the decade if policymakers follow through with major changes in both tax policy and government spending now on the books. The $1.1 trillion deficit is the smallest deficit figure both in nominal terms and as a percentage of the economy since the Great Recession. The CBO said that ...

A restaurant in Knoxville, Tennessee refused to serve state Sen. Stacey Campfield, the man who sponsored the states dont say gay bill, compared homosexuality to bestiality, and most recently told Michelangelo Signorile that its virtually impossible to spread HIV/AIDS through heterosexual sex. I hope that Stacy Campfield now knows what if feels like to be unfairly discriminated against, the Bistro at the Bijou wrote on its Facebook wall on Sunday. The restaurant has received an overwhelmingly positive response. (HT: Michelangelo Signorile) In a brief interview, Campfield confirmed to BuzzFeed that the restaurants hostess called him homophobic ...
What really happened at Occupy Oakland on Saturday January 28 Post Date: 2012-01-30 14:25:01 by lucysmom

For the internet, heres a first-hand account of Occupy Oakland on 1/28/2012, because the news never tells the full story. Ill tell you about the street battle, the 300+ arrests, the vandalism, the flag burning, all in the context of my experience today. This is deeper than the headlines. No major news source can do that for you. The stated goal for the day was to move-in to a large, abandoned, building to turn it into a social and political center. It is a long vacant convention center the only people ever near there are the homeless who use the space outside the building as a bed. The building occupation also draws attention to the large number of abandoned ...
On Sarah Palin's Facebook Page, a Revolt Against Newt Gingrich Post Date: 2012-01-30 12:13:37 by buckeroo

When Newt Gingrich proclaimed in early December that he would be the GOP nominee, I argued that his success would doom for the Tea Party. How could the movement survive a standard-bearer who once favored bank bailouts, No Child Left Behind, an individual mandate in health care, a guest-worker program, the costly prescription-drug benefit, and the nomination of Harriet Miers? Or a politician who lobbied for Freddie Mac? Tea Partiers once pledged that if they had their way, the GOP would never again have as its champion a federal-government-enlarging, entitlement-expanding Bush Republican, nor a career politician who sells influence to D.C. insiders. Elevating such a man would split the ...
