WASHINGTON Five New Orleans policemen were sentenced Wednesday to prison terms in connection with a shooting in the days after Hurricane Katrina which left two civilians dead and four others injured, prosecutors said. The sentencings in New Orleans conclude the prosecution in the so-called Danziger Bridge incident in the chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina, in which police opened fire on a group of residents on September 4, 2005, and then covered up the incident. The Justice Department said federal Judge Kurt Englehardt ordered a sentence of 65 years for officer Robert Faulcon, one of the policemen who opened fire with assault rifles and a shotgun at an unarmed family walking on ...

PAW PAW-- Southwest Michigan fruit is in bloom, and has even survived a few frosty nights, but there's another threat challenging this year's crop: Many of Michigan's bees are still in Florida or California, wrapping up their work there. Michigan fruit growers have been frustrated in their efforts to find enough worker bees to properly pollinate Michigan's fruit trees and bushes and vines, all blooming about a full month ahead of schedule, according to a recent report by Michigan State University Extension educator Mark Longstroth. He said growers "were scrambling to get bees to pollinate their orchards and are frustrated that, despite their efforts, their bees are not ...

Dick Retta stands outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in downtown Washington three days a week, trying to persuade pregnant women not to get abortions. The 80-year-old grandfather has been coming to the clinic for eight years and said he's personally persuaded over 400 women to leave this clinic and others. Retta says his approach is friendly, gentle and loving. Government lawyers portray him differently, calling him "among the most vocal and aggressive anti-abortion protestors" outside the clinic. In court documents, they say he routinely follows patients entering the building and yells at them as the clinic door closes. Last year he physically blocked a woman from entering ...

Dont hold back, Judge. FOX News contributor Judge Napolitano told Neil Cavuto today, I think the president is dangerously close to totalitarianism. A few months ago he was saying the Congress doesnt count. The Congress doesnt mean anything. I am going to rule by decree and by administrative regulation. Now hes basically saying the Supreme Court doesnt count. It doesnt matter what they think. They cant review our legislation. That would leave just him as the only branch of government standing. Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama signed legislation on Wednesday aimed at restoring Americans' faith in the nation's public institutions at a time they rank at record lows in opinion polls. The act bans insider trading by members of Congress and many executive branch employees. In a ceremony at the White House, the president referred to the need to address public skepticism about an uneven system. "The powerful shouldn't get to create one set of rules for themselves and another set of rules for everybody else," Obama said. "If we expect that to apply to our biggest corporations and to our most successful citizens, it certainly applies to our elected ...
Did Barack Obama Campaign Threaten Life of Chelsea Clinton to Keep Parents Silent on Obama’s Ineligibility? Post Date: 2012-04-04 21:49:57 by A K A Stone

Most people in the US, especially Democrats, believe that the Obama Birther Movement was started by Republicans and or the Tea Party. They believe it is a smear campaign aimed to tarnish the image of their hero of change. But they may be shocked to learn that the Birther Movement was actually started by former President Bill Clinton and Hillary back in 2008. Bettina Viviano was a vice president with Amblin Enterntainment, Steven Spielbergs company, before launching her own film production company in 1990. In 2008, Viviano was asked to produce a documentary about voter fraud within the Democratic Party. At the time, she says she was not a Democrat or a Republican and in fact had ...

The attorney representing Trayvon Martins family alleges that a clandestine meeting between Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee and State Attorney Norm Wolfinger took place hours after the teens shooting death and that the two decided together not to pursue charges against George Zimmerman, the Miami Herald reported. Benjamin Crump, who has served as legal counsel for Trayvons parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, which has already started its own investigation of the case. The letter stated that when the two men met, they came to the agreement despite the recommendation of lead homicide investigator Chris Serino. ...
Joe Arpaio Accused Of Negotiating In Bad Faith By Justice Department Post Date: 2012-04-03 20:21:18 by Brian S

PHOENIX The U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday that America's self-proclaimed toughest sheriff was negotiating in bad faith, jeopardizing efforts to settle civil rights charges stemming from allegations of racial profiling against Latinos. Department of Justice officials told a lawyer for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio that the lawman's refusal of a court-appointed monitor was a deal-breaker that would end settlement negotiations and result in a federal lawsuit. The Justice Department says Arpaio previously agreed to outside supervision and tried to change the terms of the deal in a letter Tuesday. "We believe that you are wasting time and not negotiating in ...

(Reuters) - NBC News apologized on Tuesday for the way it edited a broadcast of a conversation between George Zimmerman and a police dispatcher before teenager Trayvon Martin was killed by Zimmerman. Last week Fox News did a report in which it presented "before" and "after" versions of the call. NBC had broadcast the edited exchange on its flagship "Today" morning show. NBC News launched an investigation after the Fox report. "During our investigation it became evident that there was an error made in the production process that we deeply regret," NBC News representative Lauren Kapp said in a statement on Tuesday, in response to a query by Reuters. ...

As late as December 1773, November 1859, and October 1929, the American people had no idea how close it was. Then sudden sparks (the Boston Tea Party, John Browns raid and execution, Black Tuesday) transformed the public mood, swiftly and permanently. Over the next two decades or so, society convulsed. Emergencies required massive sacrifices from a citizenry that responded by putting community ahead of self. Leaders led, and people trusted them. As a new social contract was created, people overcame challenges once thought to be insurmountable and used the Crisis to elevate themselves and their nation to higher plane of civilization. At an event at San Franciscos Golden Gate Park for which tickets cost at least $500 Michelle said: I mean, I cant tell you in the last election how many grandparents I ran into who said, I wasnt going to vote for Barack Obama until my grandson talked to me, until my great-grandson talked to me, and talked about the future he wanted for this country. Temperatures compared to normal across the Lower 48 states during March, 2012. (Great Plains Regional Climate Center) During the course of March, large chunks of the U.S. experienced spells of warm weather unmatched in recorded history. More than 7,700 daily record high temperatures were set (or tied, compared to just 287 record lows), in some cases by mind blowing margins and over multiple days. In several instances in the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest region, morning lows even bested record highs and high temperatures soared above mid-summer norms. Its no surprise that, after data were crunched, scores of cities (90+ in 23 states according to Capital Climate) easily set March ...

The state legislature of Arizona has passed a bill that vastly broadens telephone harassment laws and applies them to the Internet and other means of electronic communication. The law, which is being pushed under the guise of an anti-bullying campaign, would mean that anything communicated or published online that was deemed to be offensive by the state, including editorials, illustrations, and even satire could be criminally punished. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund breaks down Arizona House Bill 2549: The bill is sweepingly broad, and would make it a crime to communicate via electronic means speech that is intended to annoy, offend, ...

A homemade explosive device detonated outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin on Sunday night. Police are still looking for whoever left the device, which exploded around 7:30 p.m. and caused little damage to the building. Nobody was injured. The attack is one of a string across the U.S. in recent months. Amid a heated debate over funding for Planned Parenthood last month, the Fort Worth offices of Texas State Senator Wendy Davis (D) a strong supporter of the female health program were attacked with two firebombs. Another clinic in the Dallas area was attacked in a similar manner by a separate person last July.

Confederate History Month (April) Honors the U.S. Constitution Post Date: 2012-04-01 23:17:24 by Hondo68

Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 7:27AM by Bonzer Wolf The education system in America refuses to teach the truth about the Civil War. It's difficult to find the truth because the main stream media and entertainment industry ignores the facts and refuses to portray an accurate history of the Confederacy. The War Between the States was fought over State's Rights granted in the U.S. Constitution, especially the 14th Amendment. The South lost the war and the Republic is now on the verge of becoming a "statist" government, where everything is controlled by the central government in Washington D.C. I'm flying the "Stars and Bars" all month to honor those who fought ...

(04-01) 08:31 PDT Berkeley, Calif. (AP) -- Sharp-eyed dog walkers along the San Francisco Bay waterfront may have spotted a strange-looking plane zipping overhead recently that that looked strikingly like the U.S. stealth drone captured by Iran in December. A few key differences: The flying wing seen over Berkeley is a fraction of the size of the CIA's waylaid aircraft. And it's made of plastic foam. But in some ways it's just like a real spy plane. The 4 1/2-foot-wide aircraft, built by software engineers Mark Harrison and Andreas Oesterer in their spare time, can fly itself to specified GPS coordinates and altitudes without any help from a pilot on the ground. A tiny video ...
Bill Kristol: Right Wing Attacks On Trayvon Martin ‘Ridiculous’ Post Date: 2012-04-01 14:08:35 by Brian S

Conservative columnist Bill Kristol criticized potential smear campaigns on Trayvon Marton from right-wing websites Sunday morning. Appearing on his usual role as a panel guest on Fox News Sunday, Kristol did accuse the media and activists bringing more attention to the incident as those promoting demagogugery. But he then chastised those along his same ideological beliefs. It is just demagoguery, Kristol said. I think, mostly on the side of those who want to indict the whole society for this death, maybe very unjustified shooting of this young man. And then some counterreaction by some on the right who feel this is unjust and now werent going to attack ...
Trayvon Martin Shooting: It's Not George Zimmerman Crying For Help On 911 Recording, 2 Experts Say Post Date: 2012-03-31 19:41:09 by Brian S

5:38 p.m. EST, March 31, 2012| By Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel As the Trayvon Martin controversy splinters into a debate about self-defense, a central question remains: Who was heard crying for help on a 911 call in the moments before the teen was shot? A leading expert in the field of forensic voice identification sought to answer that question by analyzing the recordings for the Orlando Sentinel. His result: It was not George Zimmerman who called for help. Tom Owen, forensic consultant for Owen Forensic Services LLC and chair emeritus for the American Board of Recorded Evidence, used voice identification software to rule out Zimmerman. Another expert contacted by the Sentinel, ...
For The First Time In History, The U.S. Military Hosted An Event Expressly For Soldiers And Others Who Don't Believe In God Post Date: 2012-03-31 19:32:59 by Brian S

(03-31) 14:01 PDT Fort Bragg, N.C. (AP) -- For the first time in history, the U.S. military hosted an event expressly for soldiers and others who don't believe in God, with a gathering sort of like a county fair Saturday on the main parade ground at one of the world's largest Army bases. The Rock Beyond Belief event at Fort Bragg, organized by soldiers here after a 2010 evangelical Christian event at the base, is the most visible sign so far of a growing desire by military personnel with atheist or other secular beliefs to get the same recognition as their religious counterparts. The purpose was not to make the Army look bad, organizers said, but to show that atheists and other ...

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) -- The special prosecutor leading the investigation into the shooting death of an unarmed black teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer is known for her tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for long sentences and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains. Furthermore, 57-year-old Angela Corey has handled hundreds of homicide cases involving the justifiable use of deadly force - experience that could prove invaluable. It will be up to Corey whether to charge 28-year-old George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who says he was defending himself when he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a scuffle. Martin was unarmed as he walked from a ...

Citizens United II? An Obamacare Roundup and Predictions There is no shortage of learned commentary about the course of argument over Obamacare at the Supreme Court this week, so I wont add to the pile of legal analysis. Instead, lets just look at some political factors, and Ill offer a couple of predictions and suggestions. Lets start with Justice Kennedy, thought to be the swing vote. Lots of people think Justice Kennedy is swayed by elite opinion, or the desire to be seen favorably by elite opinion. I doubt this is actually the case. True, Kennedy has voted to uphold abortion, and he cast his vote with the liberals in the abominable Kelo property rights case, ...

Problems With Affirmative Action Liberals Refuse to Acknowledge Written on March 30, 2012 by David L. Goetsch The left considers affirmative action one its most sacred cows. On a liberals list of dont-touch programs, affirmative action ranks right up there with abortion. And nowhere is affirmative action worshipped more fervently than in the admissions offices of colleges and universities. But there are problems with affirmative action that liberals either deny or choose to ignore, problems that undermine the viability and credibility of the program. The following problems should be considered by those in Congress who have the ability to eliminate this misguided attempt at ...
