Between March 2011 and March 2012, the state lost 23,900 jobs, more than any other state in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Some 17,800 of those were in the public sector, but the state also led the country in private-sector job losses with 6,100, reports the Christian Science Monitor. Sgt Gary Stein will receive an other-than-honourable discharge for violating a policy that limits speech of military service members, the Marine Corps said. The finding outlined in the memo from elections staff to the State Board of Canvassers could put into limbo seven emergency managers statewide. A senior at Gibson County High School in Tennessee was kicked out of her prom last Saturday for wearing a dress that resembled the Confederate battle flag, according to The Jackson Sun. School officials told 18-year-old Texanna Edwards that she could not wear the “offensive and inappropriate” dress, but she could change and come back to the event. A case of mad cow disease has been found in a dairy cow in central California, John Clifford, the USDA’s chief veterinarian, told reporters today in a briefing in Washington. The animal was found at a rendering facility, Clifford said. Its meat did not enter the food chain and the carcass will be destroyed, Clifford said. This is the fourth confirmed case of the brain-wasting disease in the U.S. cattle herd since the first was discovered in December 2003 in an animal that came from Canada.

Former BP engineer Kurt Mix was arrested in Texas on charges of intentionally destroying evidence requested by authorities, officials said.
