GOP Tries To Water Down Violence Against Women Act, Expresses Willingness To Tolerate Some Domestic Abuse
Post Date: 2012-04-26 12:00:57 by Brian S

From the very beginning, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) led the opposition to reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) — even leading Senate Judiciary Republicans to unanimously vote against it because they object to its protections for LGBT victims, immigrants and Native Americans. Grassley has now teamed up with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) “offer a substitute that would address GOP concerns with the bill.” Although the full details of Grassley and Hutchinson’s watered down protections for domestic violence victims have yet to be released, it is likely that they will map Grassley’s previously stated opposition to providing greater support for LGBT, ...

(Reuters) - A pit bull named Big Boi began menacing George and Shellie Zimmerman in the fall of 2009. The first time the dog ran free and cornered Shellie in their gated community in Sanford, Florida, George called the owner to complain. The second time, Big Boi frightened his mother-in-law's dog. Zimmerman called Seminole County Animal Services and bought pepper spray. The third time he saw the dog on the loose, he called again. An officer came to the house, county records show. "Don't use pepper spray," he told the Zimmermans, according to a friend. "It'll take two or three seconds to take effect, but a quarter second for the dog to jump you," he said. ...

(Newser) – Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's efforts to keep his job took a hit this week from a report showing how many voters lost theirs. Between March 2011 and March 2012, the state lost 23,900 jobs, more than any other state in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Some 17,800 of those were in the public sector, but the state also led the country in private-sector job losses with 6,100, reports the Christian Science Monitor. Only Mississippi and Rhode Island also saw the number of private sector jobs shrink in the same period. Walker—who faces a recall election in June—has been playing up more recent data in his campaign, pointing out that the ...

US Marine Gary Stein dismissed for criticising Obama

A US Marine sergeant who criticised President Barack Obama on Facebook is to be discharged. Sgt Gary Stein will receive an other-than-honourable discharge for violating a policy that limits speech of military service members, the Marine Corps said. The action means Sgt Stein, who served nearly 10 years in the Marine Corps, will lose all benefits. He had argued that his comments were covered by his constitutional right to freedom of speech. Sgt Stein had put a disclaimer on Facebook that his opinions, which included calling President Obama an enemy, were his own. He had put Mr Obama's face on mocked-up film posters, including one for the movie Jackass. A disciplinary board ...

LANSING, Mich. — State elections officials say opponents of Michigan’s sweeping emergency manager law have collected enough signatures to put a repeal measure on November’s ballot. The finding outlined in the memo from elections staff to the State Board of Canvassers could put into limbo seven emergency managers statewide. The memo was obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press. The board is to vote Thursday on whether the issue will go on the ballot. If it does, the law will be suspended immediately until the November election. The decision would affect emergency mangers in three school systems and four communities. It’s not expected to affect an agreement on ...

Lessons Learned From the Trayvon Martin Shooting

Sanford, FL—The shooting and mass demonstrations connected with the self-defense shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman left us all with some real lessons. The short of it is the importance of avoiding conflict and should you have to employ deadly force avoid calling 911 or giving any cooperation with police. George Zimmerman volunteered to be a Block Watch busybody. Unfortunately many neighborhoods are loaded with dangerous predators and block watches have become a reality. That’s especially true in jurisdictions that have been dumping prisoners from prisons and that have undermanned police departments. Confine any watch activities to protecting your own home, family ...

A senior at Gibson County High School in Tennessee was kicked out of her prom last Saturday for wearing a dress that resembled the Confederate battle flag, according to The Jackson Sun. School officials told 18-year-old Texanna Edwards that she could not wear the “offensive and inappropriate” dress, but she could change and come back to the event. However, Edwards refused to change out of her custom made dress and consequentially was not allowed to attend prom. A teacher had advised Edwards not to wear the dress. But Edwards thought that she would still be allowed to attend prom, even though it might offend some people, she told The Jackson Sun. Students at the high school had ...

The author of a controversial anti-immigration bill in Arizona said on Tuesday that young children could simply get state-issued identification to prove they are in the U.S. legally. Appearing before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee, former Arizona state Senate president Russell Pearce (R) defended the state’s SB 1070 law, which requires police to check the immigration status of suspects during traffic if there is a “reasonable suspicion” that they undocumented immigrants. Committee Chairmen Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pressed Pearce on why the law’s official training manual instructed officers that the way a person was dressed could constitute a “reasonable ...

The animal was found at a rendering facility, Clifford said. Its meat did not enter the food chain and the carcass will be destroyed, Clifford said. This is the fourth confirmed case of the brain-wasting disease in the U.S. cattle herd since the first was discovered in December 2003 in an animal that came from Canada.

Washington (CNN) -- The first criminal charges have been filed in connection with the BP Gulf oil disaster two years ago, the Justice Department said Tuesday. Former BP engineer Kurt Mix was arrested in Texas on charges of intentionally destroying evidence requested by authorities, officials said. An estimated 4.9 million barrels (206 million gallons) of crude poured into the Gulf of Mexico after the April 2010 explosion that sank the drill rig Deepwater Horizon and killed 11 men aboard. Oil spewed into the sea for nearly three months before a cap was placed on the BP-owned Macondo well, nearly a mile beneath the surface.

Orthodox Jews charged with child sex abuse in Brooklyn should have their identities protected because of the community’s “tight-knit and insular” nature, prosecutors claim in a remarkable response to demands for information about the cases. Rejecting a Forward request under the state’s Freedom of Information Law, the Brooklyn district attorney made the startling claim that Orthodox Jews deserve a blanket exemption from the usual public disclosure rules. Prosecutors claimed that Orthodox Jews are “unique” in that releasing the names of suspects would allow others in the community to identify their victims. “The circumstances here are unique,” ...

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney’s decision to appoint an openly gay man as his foreign policy spokesperson has angered social conservatives, not surprisingly — but the Republican front-runner’s new employee has also caused him trouble with another demographic he’s trying to woo: women. Richard Grenell’s Twitter feed was recently rife with snide remarks about various female political figures, from Michelle Obama to Hillary Clinton and Callista Gingrich. He’s reportedly scrubbed more than 800 tweets in recent days, but they live on after being unearthed and archived by news outlets shortly after Romney announced his appointment. “Hillary is starting to look ...

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett has called a special meeting with city commissioners at 4 p.m., where they will vote on resignation of Chief Lee. So far, investigators won't say why. It's a hard lesson for teacher Manuael Dillow; he's now facing 12 felony charges for brandishing a firearm on school property. ...

WASHINGTON — President Obama is finding himself increasingly boxed in on the Keystone pipeline fight as more Congressional Democrats are joining Republicans in backing the project, which has strong labor support and could generate significant numbers of jobs in economically hard-hit states. On Wednesday, the House passed a short-term transportation bill that included a provision that would pave the way for the construction of the next stage of the oil pipeline, a measure that Mr. Obama has said he would veto. The bill passed 293 to 127, with 69 Democrats supporting it. It is the fourth time the House has passed a measure to expedite the project; one failed narrowly in the Senate only ...

Defense attorney Mark O’Mara has said it would take a few days for the release to be arranged.
