Ron Paul Backers Take Over Alaska GOP

The presidential hopes, and long-term legacy within the Republican Party, of conservative-libertarian Ron Paul scored a major victory last Saturday, after backers of the Texas congressman were elected as party chairman and co-chairman at the Alaska state convention last week. Russ Millette was elected the party’s chairman, beating out a candidate backed by outgoing chair Randy Ruedrich. The establishment Republican, who has run the Alaska GOP since 2000, decided to not run again. Debra Holle Brown, another Paul supporter, was voted in as co-chair. According to the Alaska Dispatch, Millette began his political career in 1964, when he volunteered for the presidential campaign of Barry ...

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada Republicans are holding their state convention, where supporters of Ron Paul's presidential bid are poised to dominate attendees, force a possible showdown over selection of national convention delegates and exert grassroots muscle to shape the state party. Saturday's convention in Sparks comes after a lawyer for the Republican National Committee suggested Nevada's presence at the national convention could be jeopardized if Paul supporters swamp the state delegate contingent. Mitt Romney won Nevada's Republican caucuses with half the vote, and under party rules delegates to the national convention are to be allotted proportionally to the caucus ...

AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Presidential hopeful Ron Paul is teaming up with son Rand for what organizers promise will be a "massive" rally at the Texas Capitol. The national Tea Party Express is sponsoring the event which also features Ted Cruz. Cruz is the tea party darling in a crowded field of Texas GOP candidates vying for their party's nomination to replace retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, has joined his Texas congressman father frequently on the presidential campaign trail. Texas holds its primary May 29 and the elder Paul drew thousands to another Austin rally at the University of Texas late last ...

AUGUSTA, Maine – Ron Paul's army of supporters in Maine flexed their muscle Saturday as they elected their candidate for chairman of the state Republican convention, a first step toward taking over key party committees and giving the Texas congressman a voice at this summer's national convention. "I think it shows that our numbers are here," Aaron Quinn, a 28-year-old Paul supporter from Brunswick, said after the close chairmanship vote. Paul supporter Brent Tweed, a state committee member from York County, was elected chairman with 1,118 delegates' votes, just four more votes than the mainstream candidate, Charles Cragin, a one-time gubernatorial candidate. (05-05) 12:24 PDT Kansas City, Mo. (AP) -- A Muslim woman who was fired from her job with AT&T says years of harassment hit a peak when her boss snatched her scarf from her head and exposed her hair. A jury awarded former Kansas City resident Susann Bashir $5 million in punitive damages Thursday, along with $120,000 in lost wages and other actual damages. The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/JKWbqR) reports the award appears to be the largest jury verdict in a workplace discrimination case in Missouri history. Bashir says the harassment began soon after she converted to Islam in 2005. She was fired after she left work in 2008 because of stress after filing a complaint with the Equal ...

Rare white buffalo calf killed in North Texas

Authorities are investigating the death of a rare white buffalo on a North Texas ranch just days shy of its first birthday. Lakota Ranch owner Arby Little Soldier says he found the buffalo, named Lightning Medicine Cloud, dead Monday. The buffalo's mother was found dead the next day. Last year, thousands attended a naming ceremony to celebrate the calf's May 12 birth. According to Lakota Sioux lore, the goddess of peace once appeared in the form of a white buffalo calf. Arby Little Soldier says the calf "was the hope of all nations." He said a birthday celebration planned this month will be a memorial instead. Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said his agency is working ...

Obama’s Weekly Address: Time to ‘Focus On Nation-Building Here at Home’

Just days after his surprise trip to Kabul, the president says “the tide of war has turned in Afghanistan” and it is now time to “focus on nation building here at home.” “We’ve built strong Afghan Security Forces. We have devastated al Qaeda’s leadership. And one year ago, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal that I set — to defeat al Qaeda, and deny it a chance to rebuild — is within reach,” Obama said in his weekly address. The president visited Afghanistan on the one-year anniversary of bin Laden’s death, where he signed an agreement outlining the 10-year relationship between the U.S. and ...

RNC Threatens To Bar Nevada To Stop Delegates Voting For Ron Paul

In a stunning move, the Republican National Committee has warned that it may refuse to allow the entire delegation for Nevada to be seated at the national convention for fear that Ron Paul supporters have taken control of the state. Officials are petrified that Paul’s army of supporters are in position to take up more delegate slots than Mitt Romney supporters. While Romney is thought to have won 20 of the 28 slots available in Nevada, officials fear that the delegates that take them will ignore party rules by voting for Paul over Romney during the first round of balloting. “I believe it is highly likely that any committee with jurisdiction over the matter would find improper ...

A United Nations investigator probing discrimination against Native Americans has called on the US government to return some of the land stolen from Indian tribes as a step toward combatting continuing and systemic racial discrimination. James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said no member of the US Congress would meet him as he investigated the part played by the government in the considerable difficulties faced by Indian tribes. Anaya said that in nearly two weeks of visiting Indian reservations, indigenous communities in Alaska and Hawaii, and Native Americans now living in cities, he encountered people who suffered a history of dispossession of ...

Paul campaign has new tactic to win delegates, hijack GOP convention

Despite Ron Paul having essentially no shot at winning the GOP presidential nomination, his renegade campaign has embarked on a new tactic that his supporters hope can get the Texas congressmen elected – or at least get him a larger role at the party convention and cause headaches for likely nominee Mitt Romney. The Paul campaign is attempting to secure convention-bound delegates in district- and state-level contests to vote for their candidate, though Paul has failed to win a single primary or caucus. Primary math typically adds up to the winner getting the most delegates, which puts Romney far ahead of Paul. However, Paul campaigners think a strong presence at state-level contests ...

On Thursday’s edition of Laura Ingraham‘s radio show, Congressman Ron Paul explained his skepticism that presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney would be any better than President Obama. After describing why he thinks it’s silly to assume Romney’s election would be a cure-all, Ingraham pressed Rep. Paul on whether Romney would at least be “better” than the current president: INGRAHAM: Would you disagree, then, with Giuliani and others when they say that there is no doubt Mitt Romney would be a better president than Barack Obama? PAUL: Yeah, I think, marginally so. He explained that it isn’t that Romney doesn’t necessarily have better ideas, ...

When it comes to Stupid, Waco, Texas is never far behind: Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun. As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own. But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune. Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. ...

Medicare Disruptions Seen If Health Law Is Struck

WASHINGTON (AP) — Medicare's payment system, the unseen but vital network that handles 100 million monthly claims, could freeze up if President Barack Obama's health care law is summarily overturned, the administration has quietly informed the courts. Although Obama's overhaul made significant cuts to providers and improved prescription and preventive benefits, Medicare was overlooked in Supreme Court arguments that focused on the law's controversial requirement that individuals carry health insurance. Yet havoc for Medicare could have repercussions as both parties avidly court seniors in this election year and as hospitals and doctors increasingly complain the ...

Chris Pallister’s worst nightmare came true over the weekend when he took a first look at the outer islands of Prince William Sound on a flight to check for snow thaw. Beaches were exposed from ice, but a whole lot of other flotsam – large chunks of wall insulation, hundreds of gas canisters – were there as well. For 50 miles or more, massive amounts of debris litter the beaches. Black snarls of fishing nets and canisters that may still contain oil, fuel and kerosene. Carcasses of urethane foam torn out of buildings in the Japanese Earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck last spring also washed ashore. On May 5, the Gulf of Alaska Keepers had planned to get started ...

Al Qaeda Magazine Calls for Firebomb Campaign in US

The men who launched al Qaeda's English-language magazine may have died in a U.S. missile strike last fall, but "Inspire" magazine lives on without them -- and continues to promote jihadi attacks on Western targets, offering detailed advice on how to start huge forest fires in America with timed explosives and how to build remote-controlled bombs. Two new issues of "Inspire" magazine have surfaced on jihadi forums, the first since radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and chief Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula propagandist Samir Khan were killed by missiles from a U.S. drone over Yemen on September 30, 2011. The magazines eulogize Awlaki and Khan as the "spirit" ...

An Arizona man who on Wednesday reportedly killed four people, including a 47-year-old grandmother and a 15-month-old infant, and then took his own life was also a former Republican Party official, a former white supremacist neo-Nazi and the founder of a border patrol vigilante group that advocated using violence on immigrants. On Thursday morning, police in Gilbert, Arizona confirmed that J.T. (Jason Todd) Ready had committed suicide after killing his girlfriend, 47-year-old Lisa Mederos, along with her daughter, her daughter’s boyfriend and her granddaughter, according to The Arizona Republic. Profiles compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defemation League (ADL) ...

A week ago I wrote: Like the Great Oz, the Democrats prefer no one pay attention to the economic disaster behind the curtains. I have run a great many campaigns. Each has a real narrative focus. The goal of the campaign is to try to stay on that narrative focus and not get distracted by the team worried about losing. The Democrats’ antics reveal they are deeply worried about losing. They cannot fight on the issue that is singularly at play in this election — Barack Obama’s bungling of the economy, so they must try to force Mitt Romney to play elsewhere. Now Mr. Obama has gone to Afghanistan to address the nation for seven minutes. It’s hard to combat Barack Obama ...

FCC Urged To Revoke Fox Broadcast Licenses

A Washington-based ethics watchdog is calling on federal regulators to revoke News Corporation’s 27 Fox broadcast licences in the wake of the highly critical report on phone hacking from the UK parliament. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (Crew) has written to the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, calling on the regulator to pull the plug on Rupert Murdoch’s lucrative television licences on grounds of character. The letter argues that the final report of the UK Commons culture, media and sport committee, which concluded that Murdoch was not fit to run a major international company, had implications for the US regulators ...

New Jersey Tanning ‘Addict’ Accused Of Putting 6-Year-Old In Tanning Bed

An absurdly tanned New Jersey woman appeared in court on Wednesday to defend herself against a charge of child endangerment, filed after school officials noticed her 6-year-old daughter had come to school with burns on her skin. Asked by officials where she got the burns, the girl reportedly said, “I go tanning with mommy.” Patricia Krentcil, 44, denies the claim, but admits that she brings her daughter to the tanning salon. She told a reporter with CBS New York that while she may be “addicted” to tanning, her daughter instead got a sunburn while playing outside. The state of New Jersey, where tanning is immensely popular due to the highly-rated show Jersey Shore, ...

Newt Gingrich $4 Million in Debt; Staffers and Creditors Fume

Newt Gingrich ends his White House dream today with his political committee facing a mountain of debts -- owing about $4 million to scores of businesses and campaign workers around the country who fear they will never get paid. Campaign watchdogs said the size of Gingrich's debt is extraordinary -- and could have been avoided if the candidate and his team had been more disciplined. "He was reckless in running up these bills, especially in the last month or so of the campaign when it was quite clear that Mitt Romney would be the nominee," said Craig Holman, a government affairs lobbyist for the watchdog group Citizen Union. The campaign has been dogged by financial problems ...

Occupy, Smockupy. Our Idiot Youth at Work Written on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 by Chris Gadsden It seems that things are about to heat up again in the Occupy-everything culture and, if all I am seeing is correct, a large contingent of the disgruntled participants (other than burnout hippies, union thugs and anarchists) will be made up of current or recent students. These kids, instead of appreciating the incredible gift they are afforded with this educational opportunity, have decided to take to the streets to demand education, any education, for free as if it were a right. Everywhere we turn, these spoiled brats pretend they know anything about the real world, how industry works, or the ...

California to middle class: drop dead by Steven Greenhut 04/30/2012 SACRAMENTO – The new USC study pointing to a much-slower rate of population growth in California has been greeted by demographers and urban planners as good news, in that it supposedly gives our state's leaders a little breathing room to better plan for the future. The rate of growth has slowed to about 1 percent a year, the result of fewer immigrants coming here and many Californians heading to other states. "The cooling pace means the state, city and county governments and other entities will have more time to prepare for a bigger population than they did in years past, allowing for more effective ...

Gov. Scott Walker raises $13M for recall By MACKENZIE WEINGER | 5/1/12 6:42 AM EDT Updated: 5/1/12 8:05 AM EDT Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker raked in more than $13 million in just over three months as he faces an upcoming recall election to drive him from office, his campaign announced on Monday. The Republican governor raised the millions from 125,926 contributions between Jan. 17 and April 23, according to his campaign finance report. His main Democratic challengers — Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and former Dane County executive Kathleen Falk — brought in far less than Walker in the Jan. 1 through April 23 reporting period. Barrett said he raised $831,508, including $750,000 he ...
