First Lady Michelle Obama, during a commencement address in the swing-state of North Carolina, called on students to vote and warned them that civil rights triumphs such as the end of segregation can "easily" be reversed. Obama reminded the graduating class of North Carolina A&T University, a historically-black of their school's civil rights heritage, recalling how four freshmen in 1960 -- now known as the Greensboro Four -- sat at a local "whites only" lunch counter to protest segregation. "In the coming weeks and months, the demonstrations spread from Greensboro to places like Richmond, and Nashville, and Jackson and more than 50 other cities all across ...
House passes defense bill; Approves indefinite detention of terror suspects Post Date: 2012-05-18 15:23:13 by We The People

(AP) WASHINGTON -- The House on Friday endorsed the indefinite detention without trial of terrorist suspects, even for U.S. citizens seized on American soil. A coalition of Democrats and tea party Republicans fell short in their effort to end the controversial policy established last year and based on the post-Sept. 11 authorization for the use of military force that allows indefinite detention of enemy combatants. The Republican-controlled House rejected an amendment by Reps. Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Justin Amash, R-Mich., that would have barred indefinite detention and rolled back mandatory military custody. The vote was 238-182. "The frightening thing here is that the government ...

The U.S. military would be blocked from spending money on sports teams and sponsorships under an amendment the House Appropriations Committee added today by voice vote to the draft fiscal 2013 Defense appropriations bill. The Defense Department will spend $80 million this year to sponsor NASCAR teams, Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat, and Jack Kingston, a Georgia Republican, said in a joint statement. That includes the U.S. Army-branded #39 car driven by Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr.s #88 Chevrolet, of which the National Guard is a leading sponsor. The military spent $1 billion over the last 10 years on sports sponsorship deals, according to McCollum and Kingston, including ...

Jury set to deliberate in case of ex-Senator Edwards By Wade Rawlins | Reuters 11 mins ago... GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Reuters) - A jury in North Carolina is set to begin deliberations on Friday morning in the federal political corruption trial of former U.S. Senator John Edwards, who is charged with accepting excessive campaign funds to conceal his extramarital affair while he ran for president. "Even with all John has done his family, legal career, running for president, this is, of course, the most important day of his life," Edwards' defense attorney Abbe Lowell said on Thursday as both prosecutors and defense lawyers delivered closing arguments. The ...

Obama seeks to woo military vote from Republicans Romney will trim benefits to veterans, Democrats say Democrats lost the veterans vote by big margins in the last two presidential elections, but Obama campaign officials said Thursday they intend to reverse that trend by arguing that Mitt Romney would cut veterans benefits. It really seems like Romney just doesnt care about our veterans community, said Rob Diamond, the Obama campaigns outreach director for veterans and military families, in a conference call with reporters. He said the presumptive Republican nominee cut veterans services as governor of Massachusetts and supports a House GOP budget that ...

Documents Show Cops Believed Trayvon Martin Killing Was ‘Ultimately Avoidable’ [Full Thread] Post Date: 2012-05-17 23:38:50 by Brian S

The killing of Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable if George Zimmerman had just stayed in his vehicle instead of pursuing the unarmed teen, Florida police investigators concluded in one of a series of reports on the case released late Thursday. Instead, the Sanford Police Department investigators wrote, Zimmerman confronted the teen, ended up in a struggle and eventually shot him in the chest. In the end, Martin was dead and police were recommending the neighborhood watchman be brought up on a criminal charge of manslaughter. The conclusions came to light on Thursday as part of a huge release of evidence by the Florida prosecutors who later performed their own investigation ...

WAUSAUKEE, Wis. - To more fully appreciate the destructive influence Big Labor has on public schools, consider the case of former Wausaukee teacher Kurt Kostelecky. Kostelecky was convicted last summer for having sexual contact with a freshman female student during the 2008-09 school year, and is currently serving a 10-year prison term. (He claims the student came on to him, and he couldnt say no.) But that doesnt mean Kosteleckys former employer, the Wausaukee school district, can wash its hands of him. The convicted child molester was a member of the Wisconsin Education Association Council, which is still waging a legal fight on his behalf. WEAC is suing ...
NDAA indefinite detention amendment set for showdown Post Date: 2012-05-17 20:29:41 by We The People

An unlikely alliance of libertarian Republicans and liberal Democrats is set to confront their House colleagues Thursday night over the highly contentious question of whether the government has the power to indefinitely detain suspected terrorists captured on U.S. soil. This strange-bedfellows coalition is rallying behind a proposal that would make it clear that suspected terrorists detained on U.S. soil must be charged with crimes and tried in federal courts. Leading the charge are Reps. Adam Smith, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, and Justin Amash, a tea party-backed Republican from Michigan. They are sponsoring an amendment that is set to be considered as ...
THIS JUST IN: Evidence Of Marijuana Found In Trayvon Martin's Urine And Blood Post Date: 2012-05-17 19:36:09 by Brian S

Trayvon Martin's autopsy shows evidence of marijuana in his urine and blood. The autopsy was among a large amount of evidence released by prosecutors on Thursday as part of the second-degree murder case against the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot him in February. Other documents include a photograph that shows suspect George Zimmerman with a bloody nose. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him. He has pleaded not guilty. A police report says Martin had $40.15, Skittles candy, a red lighter, headphones and a photo pin in his pocket. He had been shot once in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Precsience and Greatness of George W Bush Post Date: 2012-05-17 17:53:33 by no gnu taxes

Late in 2008 -- I can't recall now whether it was shortly before or shortly after Election Day -- a group of us serving as speechwriters to President George W. Bush were with him in the Oval Office for one of our regular meetings when the conversation turned to Barack Obama's relentless campaign trail attacks on the administration's national security policies. As was usually the case, there was more umbrage from amongst the president's staff than from the man himself. He was a political veteran who had long ago become unmoved by the steady torrent of criticism directed at him (attacks trained on his father or other members of his family, however, were a strikingly different ...

Senators to Unveil the ‘Ex-Patriot Act’ to Respond to Facebook’s Saverin’s Tax ‘Scheme’ Post Date: 2012-05-17 12:03:11 by Brian S

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has a status update for Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin: Stop attempting to dodge your taxes by renouncing your U.S. citizenship or never come to back to the U.S. again. In September 2011, Saverin relinquished his U.S. citizenship before the company announced its planned initial public offering of stock, which will debut this week. The move was likely a financial one, as he owns an estimated 4 percent of Facebook and stands to make $4 billion when the company goes public. Saverin would reap the benefit of tax savings by becoming a permanent resident of Singapore, which levies no capital gains taxes. At a news conference this morning, Sens. Schumer and Bob ...

Minority babies outnumbered white newborns in 2011 for the first time in U.S. history, the latest milestone in a demographic shift thats transforming the nation. The percentage of white newborns fell to 49.6 percent of children younger than a year old from April 2010 to July 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau said today. The trend is likely to have a far-reaching impact on the countrys political alignment, the nature of its workforce and on its economic future. Predominantly white, older enclaves in the Northeast and Midwest will increasingly rely on an expanding population of young Asians and Hispanics in the West and Sun Belt to support Social Security and other retirement ...

Separately, a medical report on Martins alleged killer, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, prepared by his personal physician the day after Martins shooting in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, found that the Neighborhood Watch volunteer suffered a likely ...

A federal judge temporarily blocked enforcement of a section of the National Defense Authorization Act that opponents claim allows for indefinite military detention. U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest in Manhattan today ruled in favor of a group of writers and activists who sued officials including President Barack Obama, claiming the act, signed into law Dec. 31, puts them in fear that they could be arrested and held by U.S. armed forces. The complaint was filed by a group including former New York Times reporter Christopher Hedges. The plaintiffs contend a section of the law allows for detention of citizens and permanent residents taken into custody in the U.S. on suspicion of ...

Barack Obama is now campaigning on the capture and kill of Osama Bin Laden a year ago last Tuesday. Really? For years before he became President and then on the campaign trail in 2008, Obama railed against and denounced the very policies and procedures that ultimately led to the Bin Laden kill. The capture and kill of Osama bin Laden was ten years in the making. And during those years, Barack Obama excoriated George W. Bush for "enhanced interrogation techniques" and waterboarding three (!) top jihad killers. Thousands of lives were saved, but Obama cared more about Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's sore nose. Now he is taking credit for those very things? Whiplash. How about the ...
Top Army General Objects To GOP Plan To Slow Troop Reductions Post Date: 2012-05-16 12:33:28 by Brian S

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno said Wednesday hes opposed to a plan from House Republicans to slow the reduction of U.S. forces over the next five years. The House Armed Services Committee included language in the Defense authorization bill to limit troop reductions to 15,000 per year for the Army and 5,000 for the Marine Corps through 2017, a slower pace than the military had planned for. The Army proposed cutting its forces by 72,000 and the Marines 20,000 in the 2013 budget, in part as a result of the drawdowns in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as budget constraints. Odierno said at a Pentagon press briefing Wednesday that the House proposal is too restrictive ...

SANFORD WFTV has confirmed that autopsy results show 17-year-old Trayvon Martin had injuries to his knuckles when he died. The information could support George Zimmerman's claim that Martin beat him up before Zimmerman shot and killed him. The autopsy results come as Zimmerman's attorney, Mark OMara continues to go over other evidence in the case. OMara wouldn't comment on the autopsy evidence, but WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said it's better for the defense than it is for the prosecution. WFTV has learned that the medical examiner found two injuries on Martins body: The fatal gunshot wound and broken skin on his knuckles. When ...

SANFORD, Fla. WFTV has learned charges against George Zimmerman could be getting more serious. State prosecutors said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, profiled and stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin before killing him, so the FBI is now looking into charging him with a hate crime. Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he claims the shooting was in self-defense. He's facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. But if Zimmerman is charged and found guilty of a federal hate crime involving murder, he could face the death penalty. FBI ...
