SANFORD In an unexpected turn, Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester is hearing argument about whether George Zimmerman's bond should be revoked in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. In a new motion filed, prosecutors accused Zimmerman and his wife of lying to the judge during a bond hearing about money they collected for his defense. Prosecutors allege Zimmerman's wife knew about the donations her husband had collected through a PayPalaccount, but didn't mention the money at his bond hearing. Zimmerman's PayPal account collected more than $200,000, his attorney later revealed. "Defendant has intentionally deceived the court with the assistance of his wife," ...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Southern Baptist Convention's ethics chief has been reprimanded and his radio show canceled after he made inflammatory comments about the Trayvon Martin case. Among other things, Richard Land accused President Barack Obama and other black leaders of shamefully exploiting Martin's death for political gain. His comments upset many black Southern Baptist leaders, one of whom called for Land's resignation. The controversy got more intense when a blogger revealed that Land's commentary was copied nearly verbatim from an editorial in the Washington Times. After an investigation, the board of the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission on ...

54% of WI AFSCME employees voted with their feet in 2011. Posted by Moe Lane (Diary) Thursday, May 31st at 9:30AM EDT I am going to try to avoid too much hyperbole and sarcasm for this one; this is one time where the situation requires neither. When Scott Walker and other Republicans instituted labor union reforms in 2009, one of the basic planks of such reforms the one that was quietly and viciously fought, tooth and nail, by the unions was removal of mandatory dues collection for public sector union employees. In fact, from the union leaderships point of view this was THE reform that needed to be killed; if the Republicans had compromised on it then there probably ...

REVERE, N.M.A massive wildfire in the New Mexico wilderness that already is the largest in state history spread in all directions Thursday, and experts say it's likely a preview of things to come as states across the West contend with a dangerous recipe of wind, low humidity and tinder-dry fuels. The erratic Gila National Forest blaze grew overnight to more than 190,000 acres, or nearly 300 square miles, as it raced across the area's steep, ponderosa pine-covered hills and through its rugged canyons. More than 1,200 firefighters are at the massive blaze near the Arizona border, which has destroyed 12 cabins and a few small outbuildings, fire information officer Iris Estes ...

The House defeated a bill today to ban sex-selective abortion, a controversial measure opposed by President Barack Obama and abortion rights activists. The legislation, first introduced by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) three years ago, would punish doctors with up to five years in prison for performing an abortion if the doctor knows it is sought based on the sex or gender of the child. The bill failed 246-168 under suspension of the rules. Ours Members feel strongly about it, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters before the vote. This is an important issue to the American people. This type of sex-selection, most Americans find pretty repulsive. ...

Just reaching the top 1 percent is passe. The real place to be is a more elite top 0.5 percent the high-earners who pay no taxes. The club that made more than $200,000 in 2009 and paid absolutely nothing in U.S. income taxes had 20,752 members among the nearly 4 million households with incomes above $200,000 according to an Internal Revenue Service study. So how do they do it? In most cases, its a mix of tax breaks that combine to turn high gross incomes into negligible taxable income. That means some charitable contributions, some casualty and theft losses, some foreign tax credits and medical expenses. The percentages of non-payers are near all-time highs, ...

Does Obama really believe his own B.S. by Mickey Kaus Todays NYT campaign notebook has Obama sluicing the controversial Nutting Marketwatch chart straight off the Internet into a campaign speech, in which he proclaims Since Ive been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years. (The exact sequence seems to be Nuttings keyboard to Web to Carney to Obama to the world.) Obamas instantaneous embrace of Nuttings charta calculation so absurd even Ezra Klein tried to change the subject, since (among other things) it attributes all but $140 billion of increased 2009 spending most of Obamas $800+ billion stimulus ...

Sex Selection Abortion in America Posted by Breanne Howe In the wake of Chen Guangcheng arriving safely in the United States, after years of persecution in China for his anti-abortion activism, The House of Representatives will vote tomorrow on H.R. 3541 (also known as the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act PRENDA), a bill to ban sex-selection abortions in the United States. Although the US has strongly condemned China for their sex-selection abortion practices, only four states (AZ, OK, PA and IL) currently have laws banning the procedure. Sex-selection abortions have long been an issue around the globe, most notably in China and India, and studies show they are rampant in the US. A ...

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Doc Watson, the Grammy-award winning folk musician whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world for more than a half-century, died Tuesday at a hospital in Winston-Salem, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his management company. He was 89. Watson, who was blind from age 1, recently had abdominal surgery that resulted in his hospitalization. Arthel Doc Watsons mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own ...
Social Security Disability Seen Insolvent In 4 Years Unless Congress Votes Post Date: 2012-05-29 20:09:23 by Brian S

A U.S. government entitlement program is headed for insolvency in four years, and its not the one members of Congress are talking about most. The Social Security disability programs trust fund is projected to run out of cash far sooner than the better-known Social Security retirement plan or Medicare. That will trigger a 21 percent cut in benefits to 11 million Americans -- disabled people, their spouses and children -- many of whom rely on the program to stay out of poverty. Its really striking how rapidly this is growing, how big its become and how D.C. is just afraid of it, said Mark Duggan, a University of Pennsylvania economist and adviser to the ...

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Thomas Bleming, a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Wyoming, has posted anti-Semitic videos on his Facebook page. Among Blemings postings is a video he labeled the eternal Jew, updated for 2010. The Eternal Jew is a notorious Nazi propaganda film that described Jews as parasites intent on world domination. The video posted by Bleming, who announced last week that he would challenge incumbent Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) for his seat, appears to use the original script with contemporary images. It also includes images of Jews who have been convicted of crimes, among them Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff and Dr. Baruch Goldstein, who ...

WASHINGTON | Mon May 28, 2012 3:16pm EDT (Reuters) - Low levels of nuclear radiation from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima power plant have turned up in bluefin tuna off the California coast, suggesting that these fish carried radioactive compounds across the Pacific Ocean faster than wind or water can. Small amounts of cesium-137 and cesium-134 were detected in 15 tuna caught near San Diego in August 2011, about four months after these chemicals were released into the water off Japan's east coast, scientists reported on Monday. That is months earlier than wind and water currents brought debris from the plant to waters off Alaska and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The amount of ...

Rudy Giulianis personal ego is already getting in the way as he campaigns for Mitt Romney. New York City's former mayor said Sunday that Romney's record might not hold up against his own but it's still better than President Obamas list of accomplishments. Rudy Giuliani, a former presidential contender and a late-commer to the Romney camp, said the Massachusetts governor's economic record only looked paltry when compared to his own. "Well, there's a certain amount of personal ego in that," Giuliani said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "Maybe it was circumstances or whatever, but I had massive reduction ...

Gay students at America's military service academies are wrapping up the first year when they no longer had to hide their sexual orientation, benefiting from the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that used to bar them from seemingly ordinary activities like taking their partners openly to graduation events. For the first time, gay students at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis were able to take a same-sex date to the academy's Ring Dance for third-year midshipmen. The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., officially recognized a club for gay students this month. And gay cadets at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., are relieved ...

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate, claiming to be the most medically and mentally troubled generation of former troops the nation has ever seen. A staggering 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. That is more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, top government officials told The Associated Press. What's more, these new veterans are claiming eight to nine ailments on average, and the most recent ones over the last year are claiming 11 to 14. By comparison, Vietnam ...
