Online Threat — But SWAT Team Raids Wrong House
Post Date: 2012-06-30 12:37:24 by Brian S

Imagine you're sitting at home, comfortable on the couch, watching the Food Network, when all of a sudden a heavily armed SWAT team breaks down your door and storms into your living room. That's what happened to 18-year-old Stephanie Milan, who was watching TV in her family's Evansville, Ind., home last Thursday (June 22), when a team of police officers broke down her storm door — the front door was already open — and tossed a flash-bang stun grenade into the room. "The front door was open," Ira Milan, Stephanie's grandfather and the property owner, told the Evansvile Courier & Press. "To bring a whole SWAT team seems a little excessive." ...

WASHINGTON — Violent thunderstorms that hit the Washington metropolitan area late Friday have left at least one person dead and cut off power to about two million people, media reports said. NBC News reported that a northern Virginia woman was killed when a tree fell on her house. The storms followed a day of record high temperatures in the area. West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declared a state of emergency after more than 500,000 customers in 27 counties were left without power due to the storm. Pepco, the local utility company, reported 226,012 outages in Montgomery County and 133,160 in Prince George’s County, both in Maryland and 66,684 in Washington. More than 800 ...

Rand Paul Calls for Revolt After Health Law Ruling

Most Republican lawmakers have been careful to say that they respect the Supreme Court even while disagreeing with its affirmation of President Barack Obama’s health law. Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) has been far more dismissive. “Just because a couple people on the Supreme Court declare something to be ‘constitutional’ does not make it so,” Mr. Paul said in his written statement after the ruling. “The whole thing remains unconstitutional.” Democrats jumped on the comment as belittling the court. “One of the tea party’s folks — who’s, by the way, a member of the United States Senate — said, just because a small number of people said that’s constitutional doesn’t mean it is,” said ...

Darrell Issa Puts Details of Secret Wiretap Applications in Congressional Record By Jonathan Strong Roll Call Staff June 29, 2012, 12:06 p.m. In the midst of a fiery floor debate over contempt proceedings for Attorney General Eric Holder, House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) quietly dropped a bombshell letter into the Congressional Record. The May 24 letter to Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), ranking member on the panel, quotes from and describes in detail a secret wiretap application that has become a point of debate in the GOP’s “Fast and Furious” gun-walking probe. The wiretap applications are under court seal, and releasing such ...

Security lapses found at CDC bioterror lab in Atlanta By Alison Young A federal bioterror laboratory already under investigation by Congress for safety issues has had repeated incidents of security doors left unlocked to an area where experiments occur with dangerous germs, according to internal agency e-mails obtained by USA TODAY. In one incident, an unauthorized employee was discovered inside a restricted area. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman says the unsecured door incidents in 2010 and 2009 inside its Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory in Atlanta were "not an acceptable practice of the agency." At no time, though, were bioterror organisms such ...

Rand Paul to Supreme Court: Drop dead

TheU.S. Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to uphold all but one part of the 2010 healthcare law produced some strong reactions. Supporters declared victory and opponents vowed to keep fighting. That much was to be expected. But Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s rant against the high court’s ruling was a surprise of sorts. The physician-turned-elected-official appeared to suggest that the court needs a legal lesson or two. “Just because a couple people on the Supreme Court declare something to be ‘constitutional’ does not make it so. The whole thing remains unconstitutional,” Paul said in a statement. “While the court may have erroneously come to ...

The wildfire near Colorado Springs has destroyed hundreds of homes and threatens heavily populated areas of the state’s second-largest city. As the wind-whipped blaze entered its fifth day, more than 30,000 people remained out of their homes, said Bret Waters, the city’s emergency management director. An estimated 18,500 acres had been burned, said Rich Harvey, incident commander for the multi-agency task force attacking the fire. In praise of discrimination By:John Stossel, 6/27/2012 05:44 AM I'm scared. I fear that even if the Supreme Court overrules most of Obamacare (or did already, by the time you read this), Republicans will join Democrats in restoring "good" parts of the law, like the requirement that insurance companies cover kids up to age 26 and every American with a pre-existing condition. Those parts of Obamacare are popular. People like getting what they think is free stuff. But requiring coverage to age 26 makes policies cost more. Even Bill O'Reilly lectures me that government should ban discrimination against those with pre-existing conditions. Most Americans agree with him. Who ...

(NEW YORK) -- A bullied bus monitor finally got to meet the anonymous benefactor who began the online website that has raised more than $659,000 for her. Karen Klein, 68, welcomed Max Sidorov into her Greece, N.Y., home Tuesday night. "Great. Great. Nice guy, nice guy," Klein said. "I'm very appreciative." Klein became a public symbol for abusive bullying after a video was posted online showing four seventh-grade boys hurling taunts and crude jokes at her. The video was seen more than two million times on YouTube. Sidorov, who is from Toronto, said he was bullied once, too. After seeing the video, he said, he had to do something. POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) A 35-year-old Idaho man is headed to prison after telling his bail bondsman he planned to sell methamphetamine to finance his bond payment. Ruben Moreno Sanchez pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to possession with intent to distribute fifty grams or more of the drug. Boise police say Moreno was contacted last August by a bail bondsman seeking an outstanding bond balance. They say Moreno claimed he was planning on selling a pound of meth stashed at his motel room to cover the tab. The bondsman called police, who then brought a search warrant to Moreno's motel room and found a third of a pound of meth. Moreno's sentencing is Sept. 17 in Pocatello ...

The current income tax rate structure was put in place by Title I of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA). EGTRRA is scheduled to sunset on January 1, 2013. The rate structure will then revert to its much higher, pre-2001 levels. If Title I is allowed to expire in 2013, marginal income tax rates will increase for all taxpayers by up to one third. The largest increase will occur in the lowest tax bracket, which will adversely affect low-income earners. In fact, 60% of the 2001/2003 tax relief went to middle- and low-income earners. A key principle of taxation is that if an activity is taxed, individuals will do less of it. Allowing income tax hikes, ...

Brinkin, 66, who worked for the San Francisco Human Rights Commission before his retirement in 2010, was taken into custody Friday night. GOP senators are putting the pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate whether the White House is responsible for national security leaks. “The numerous national security leaks reportedly originating out of the executive branch in recent months have been stunning,” according to a copy of the letter to Holder, signed by more than 30 GOP senators and obtained by Fox News. “If there were ever a case requiring an outside special counsel with bipartisan acceptance and widespread public trust, this is it.” Among the concerns about the leaks are recent news reports regarding the United State’s drone attacks in the Middle East. ...

Issa: Fast and Furious might have been a political operation to push for gun control

The big question from last week’s assertion of executive privilege by Barack Obama was what, exactly, was so troublesome that the White House couldn’t have Attorney General Eric Holder release it. It certainly wasn’t to protect the precedent of confidentiality of presidential advice; Obama and Holder have insisted that the President had no knowledge of Operation Fast and Furious until it made the headlines. Even the assertion of privilege attempted to skirt that issue by relying on deliberative process rather than direct presidential privilege, although it seems almost certain that deliberative process won’t shield Holder and others at executive agencies. Clearly, the ...

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A wildfire near Colorado Springs has quickly grown to more than 2,000 acres and prompted thousands of residents to flee their homes, while another fire to the north claimed more than a dozen cabins and structures after sweeping through a Rocky Mountain neighborhood. Hot, dry and gusty conditions are expected to continue into Sunday after fueling the two fires that erupted a day earlier. At least seven wildfires are now burning across Colorado, where officials have been challenged by one of the most severe wildfire seasons in recent memory. The larger of the two new fires Saturday was the Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs, which flared up around ...

Should tax dollars fund political scientists?

Should tax dollars fund political scientists? Rick Moran The Republicans want to eliminate grants from the National Science Foundation for political scientists, and the poly sci professors are in an uproar. But one political scientist writing in the New York Times points out why this is an excellent idea: It's an open secret in my discipline: in terms of accurate political predictions (the field's benchmark for what counts as science), my colleagues have failed spectacularly and wasted colossal amounts of time and money. The most obvious example may be political scientists' insistence, during the cold war, that the Soviet Union would persist as a nuclear threat to the United ...

A video of a bunch of verbally abusive middle school bullies making a 68 year old bus monitor cry has gone viral all over the Internet. This video is a perfect example of the social decay that is destroying this nation. We are raising a generation of young people that do not have respect for anyone or anything. In the video, 68 year old Karen Klein is repeatedly called poor, fat, ugly and a whole bunch of other things that I cannot repeat in this space. The bullies refer to "her sweat" and "her flab" over and over throughout the ten minute video. They call her a troll and an elephant and make numerous sexual comments about her. This video is beyond horrifying, but the ...

PRICE — The mother of a 13-year-old girl says she has filed a formal complaint against a juvenile court judge who told her he'd cut her daughter's sentence if she cut off the girl's ponytail in his courtroom. "She definitely needed to be punished for what had happened," Valerie Bruno told the Deseret News. "But I never dreamt it would be that much of a punishment." Bruno's daughter, Kaytlen Lopan, was referred to 7th District Juvenile Judge Scott Johansen's court in March for an allegation of assault. Lopan and a friend endeared themselves to a 3-year-old girl at McDonald's in Price and then used scissors to cut several inches of hair from the little girl's head, according to ...
