In just one week, the number of West Nile virus cases in the U.S. has increased by 40 percent with more deaths and infections on the way. According to the Associated Press, 1,590 cases of West Nile have been reported to the CDC this year, with 66 deaths. Two weeks ago, there were only 693 documented cases in the U.S. with 26 dead. Dr. Lyle Petersen of the CDC told the AP that this year we think the numbers may come close to the outbreaks of 2002 and 2003, in which nearly 3,000 severe illnesses were reported, with 290 deaths. Petersen said that about half of this years West Nile cases have been severe illnesses, but several factors complicate West Nile tracking, including ...
Isaac Drenches Louisiana, Moves North From Gulf Coast Post Date: 2012-08-30 11:38:09 by Brian S

Heavy rain and flooding spread inland from Tropical Storm Isaac as rising water forced evacuations in coastal areas of southeast Louisiana. While reinforced levees surrounding New Orleans forestalled a recurrence of Hurricane Katrinas 2005 disaster, Isaacs slow pace brought prolonged rain and storm surges. At 8 a.m. New York time, Isaac was 125 miles (201 kilometers) northwest of New Orleans, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm, which made landfall as a hurricane on Aug. 28, was moving northwest at 8 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Even though Isaac is no longer a hurricane, life- threatening hazards from storm surge, inland ...
TSA Harasses Ron Paul and His Wife in Florida (Carol refuses to be groped by BigSis) Post Date: 2012-08-30 10:24:26 by Hondo68

On departing the RNC in Tampa yesterday, Ron Paul, his wife and grand-daughter were subjected to harassment by the TSA at a small airport in Clearwater, Florida. Eight TSA goons told the Paul entourage they would need to be screened before they would be allowed to leave because Mitt Romney might be nearby. The insinuation was obvious Paul and his family pose a threat to the GOP presidential candidate. After a protracted examination of Ron Pauls credentials, the agents demanded they be allowed to check the airplane for explosives. The incident ended after Ron Pauls wife, Carol, who has a pacemaker, refused to be screened by the TSA and an aide started taking video. The ...
Jane Romney: My Brother Won't Ban Abortion Post Date: 2012-08-29 23:33:09 by Ferret Mike

AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi Jane Romney, left, said abortion is not her brother's focus. She joined the candidate's son Matt Romney, right, for a California State Republican Party appearance in this 2008 photo.
Mitt Romney’s eldest sister, who has backed prominent Democrats for office and is in Tampa showing support for her brother, had some reassuring words Wednesday for women concerned about the Republican Party’s hard line on abortion.
Mitt Romney would never make abortions illegal as president, Jane Romney said when National Journal asked her about the subject after a “Women for Mitt” event. "He’s not going to be touching any of that,” she said. “It’s not his focus.”

Officials May Breach Levee as Isaac Storms Inland Post Date: 2012-08-29 17:32:24 by Brian S

Newly downgraded Tropical Storm Isaac plodded its way across Louisiana on Wednesday, inundating parts of a mostly rural area southeast of New Orleans, while in the city, on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, levees were so far holding. In hard-hit Plaquemines Parish, officials rescued dozens of people by boat after they became stranded by floodwaters. Authorities feared more could need help after a night of slashing rain and fierce winds that knocked out power to more than 700,000 households. advertisement The hurricane also canceled commemoration ceremonies Wednesday for Katrinas 1,800 dead in Louisiana and Mississippi. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said officials were considering ...
Greed and Debt: The True Story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital Post Date: 2012-08-29 15:08:06 by Capitalist Eric

How the GOP presidential candidate and his private equity firm staged an epic wealth grab, destroyed jobs and stuck others with the bill The great criticism of Mitt Romney, from both sides of the aisle, has always been that he doesn't stand for anything. He's a flip-flopper, they say, a lightweight, a cardboard opportunist who'll say anything to get elected. The critics couldn't be more wrong. Mitt Romney is no tissue-paper man. He's closer to being a revolutionary, a backward-world version of Che or Trotsky, with tweezed nostrils instead of a beard, a half-Windsor instead of a leather jerkin. His legendary flip-flops aren't the lies of a bumbling ...
Romney’s Defense-Budget Growth Tops Cold War Pace: BGOV Insight Post Date: 2012-08-29 12:52:25 by Brian S

Governor Mitt Romneys national security policies reflect the Oliver-Twistian mindset of the Republican establishment on defense issues. They want some more. How Romney obliges that impulse illustrates the dilemma of trying to satisfy a military-industrial complex whose business models and profit margins are based on fixed diets. Candidate Romney has set a goal of a base Pentagon budget thats equal to 4 percent of the nations gross domestic product. Thats about where defense spending will be in the coming year, assuming a decline in spending for the war in Afghanistan. Depending on how the economy behaves during the next four to eight years, a President Romneys ...

AMPA, Fla. Former Mississippi Republican Gov. Haley Barbour told The Daily Caller that the majority of Americans think the U.S. is still in a recession while President Barack Obama probably does not agree. TheDC asked Barbour if he thinks the Bush-era tax rates for every income bracket should be extended. Obama only supports the extension of the rates for families making under $250,000 per year. Barack Obama said in 2009 and Barack Obama said in 2011 that it would be a mistake to raise taxes in a recession. Well, 70 percent of Americans think were in a recession. Maybe Barack Obama doesnt, Barbour told TheDC during the Republican National Convention in ...
GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today Post Date: 2012-08-28 13:13:52 by SJN

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. Ive been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting. Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsbergs effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominees campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states. That issue appears resolved, but several people ...

Dear Fellow Delegate, On Tuesday of this week, as Republican National Convention delegates, you and I will be voting on rules changes that could fundamentally change our Republican Party and not for the better. Over the years, Ive served on the Louisiana and Virginia GOP Rules Committees. I currently serve on both the Republican National Committees Standing Committee on Rules and on the National Conventions Committee on Rules and Order of Business. I was Barry Goldwaters youngest elected delegate in 1964, I was honored to serve on President Ronald Reagans White House Staff from 1981-1984, and I have attended every Republican National Convention Rules ...

Isaac Aguigui, the Army private and alleged ringleader of a plot to assassinate Barack Obama and "take over" Ft. Stewart in Georgia, apparently served as a page at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minnesota. That's his mug shot after he was arrested for the alleged murder of Pvt. Michael Roark on the left. At right is a 2008 Reuters photo with the caption: "Republican National Convention page Isaac Aguigui watches from the edge of the floor at the start of the first session of the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota September 1, 2008." Of course, there could be two Isaac Aguiguis who look startlingly alike. Aguigui, according to ...

This video is from the march to the RNC of the Occupiers those videotaping dont seem to be political. They capture the extremism of the Occupiers chanting, One, F**k Obama, Two F**k Obama, Three, Obama is F**king Traitor!! You think the media will go as crazy as when a Mitt Romney supporter called Obama a traitor? Not for their beloved unwashed bathsalts-addled rapist hippies. Romney surrogate John Sunnunu even had to apologize for daring to call Obama un-American. Lets not forget these are the filthy degenerates that Obama told, you are the reason I ran for president. But dont worry, these idiots hate Republicans too, as ...

With every passing day, Elizabeth Warrens campaign looks more and more like the Martha Coakley campaign. The Weekly Standard reports (via Instapundit h/t Linda in Tennessee), a Warren campaign staffer physically assaulted a cameraman following Warren (language warning): An aide to Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat, appears to have knocked the video camera of a Republican tracker after an event this weekend in Marthas Vineyard. Watch the video below: As The Weekly Standard points out, this was similar to the attack by a Martha Coakley staffer on John McCormack in December 2009, which I covered at the time including this photo of Coakley watching the ...
Chris Hayes: How Dare Romney Run Ads on Welfare That Don't Include Black People Post Date: 2012-08-27 22:16:23 by A K A Stone

Of course, MSNBC's answer to Katie Couric would be downright indignant had Romney run ads on welfare that included black people. Here is Chris Hayes venting to socialist soulmate Rachel Maddow about what he considers the veiled racism of Romney's ads slamming President Obama for gutting work requirements in the 1996 welfare reform law (video after page break) -- HAYES: It is very difficult when you look at the history of attacks on redistribution, the attacks on redistribution particularly around welfare have had a very loaded racial subtext forever. You will note in the Romney ads, there is not a single African-American that appears in them. Very interestingly ... MADDOW: ...

Isaac Lashing The Keys; An Eyewall Is Building Post Date: 2012-08-26 13:54:41 by Brian S

Tropical Storm Isaac is steadily organizing as it lashes the Florida Keys with heavy rain and tropical storm-force winds. Sustained winds of 44 mph and 41 mph have been observed at Molasses Reef and Sombrero Key, respectively, this morning. Radar out of Key West shows an increase in spiral banding, and the beginnings of an eyewall. An Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft completed its first pass through the center of Isaac near 11:30 am EDT, and did not find the pressure had fallen, or that the peak winds had increased. Infrared and visible satellite loops show that Isaac is a large and increasingly well-organized storm. An analysis of upper level winds from the University of Wisconsin CIMSS ...

Charles Crites, 69, of Louisiana attended the Libertarian Partys alternate convention Friday at the State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Fla. TAMPA, Fla. The future of what Ron Paul started rests with supporters like Ashley Ryan, who will attend Mr. Pauls final presidential campaign rally here with decidedly mixed feelings. Ms. Ryan, a 21-year-old college student, will take over as Maines national committeewoman after sitting as a Paul delegate at this weeks Republican National Convention. But in a credentials dispute, hard-bargaining party leaders left Paul forces with only half the Maine delegates they thought they had won this year a blunt reminder of Mitt ...
No Ron Paul revolution at convention Post Date: 2012-08-24 14:23:32 by SJN

TAMPA, Fla. The Republican establishment has quelled the Ron Paul Revolution, at least for 2012. Using a mix of charm and procedural hardball, Mitt Romneys campaign and his allies who control the Republican National Committee have ensured that the Texas congressman will neither speak nor be formally nominated at next weeks convention. Its a significant victory for Romney, who could have been faced with a raucous rebellion from the Paul crowd if he hadnt extended an early, and diplomatic, olive branch to whats become a key constituency. The libertarian septuagenarian controls the state delegations from Nevada, Iowa and Minnesota. But a candidate needs ...

NEW YORK (AP) -- A laid-off women's accessories designer shot a former coworker to death in front of the Empire State Building, causing a chaotic showdown with police Friday in front of one of the world's best-known landmarks. Police killed the suspect and at least nine others were wounded, some possibly by police gunfire, city officials said. Some of the wounded were grazed by bullets and others hit directly, but all were expected to survive, officials said. The gunshots rang out on the Fifth Avenue side of the building at around 9 a.m., a time of day when the sidewalks around the building are packed with pedestrians and merchants were opening their shops.
