Romney as a Manager: Unhurried and Socratic Post Date: 2012-10-20 17:25:22 by A K A Stone

BOSTON As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney could not resist burrowing into the bureaucratic weeds: He once took the statewide math and reading test for 10th graders, then startled his education commissioner by calling to say, I like No. 14 and rattling off the answer. As head of the private equity firm Bain Capital, he was so uncomfortable cutting loose struggling employees that a legend grew: executives sent in to his office to be fired emerged thinking they had been promoted. And as a candidate for president this year, he resisted pressure from advisers to select a running mate before leaving on a high-profile trip overseas, insisting that he makes better ...

This Internet Troll Had His Life Ruined Post Date: 2012-10-20 11:10:38 by no gnu taxes

A notorious internet troll has been fired from his job at a US financial services company after he was exposed as the creator of an online forum where users shared sexualised images of underage girls.
Michael Brutsch, a cat-loving grandfather from Texas who spent years posting vile messages online, claims he has received dozens of death threats since his identity was revealed last week in the New York-based blog Gawker.
The 49-year-old, who used the online pseudonym Violentacrez (pronounced violent acres), had pleaded with Gawker not to expose his identity, saying he had a disabled wife and could lose his job.
And the 49-year-old's fears proved to be well-founded. He has since been ...
Lee Iacocca endorses Romney for president Post Date: 2012-10-19 15:06:53 by A K A Stone

After a lifetime of voting for and supporting Democrats and even declining appointment to the U.S. Senate from a Democratic governor Lee Iacocca Thursday endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president. The blessings of the onetime Chrysler chairman are expected to help Romney in two highly competitive states: Pennsylvania, where the 88-year-old Iacocca was born and raised and is still widely respected, and in Michigan, where Iacocca rose to become a major figure in the auto industry and won international praise for cobbling together the government-backed loans that saved Chrysler in 1980. Iacocca, who now lives in California, issued a statement saying he backed Romney ...

Marty Morgenstern, the secretary of the California agency that substantially under-reported unemployment claims last week, contributed to President Barack Obamas 2008 presidential election campaign, The Daily Caller has learned. On Oct. 11, the federal government reported that weekly jobless claims were down significantly, suggesting a dramatic national increase in economic growth and a steep decline in layoffs. Jobless claims, according to the Labor Department, had fallen by 30,000 to 339,000, their lowest level since February 2008. The good news for the Obama administration spread quickly, with outlets like CNN and Bloomberg declaring, Jobless claims fall to four-year ...
Judge Allows School Cheerleaders In Texas To Continue Displaying Bible Verses Post Date: 2012-10-19 11:38:43 by Brian S

A district judge has ruled that a Texas school district cannot prevent cheerleaders from using banners containing Biblical verses. State District Judge Steven Thomas ruled Thursday that the Kountze Independent School Districts decision to prohibit the use of the banners during football games appeared to violate the students First Amendment rights. The cheerleaders will be allowed to display the banners pending the outcome of a lawsuit against the school district. The case is set for trial on June 24, 2013. The school district prohibited the banners after being contacted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation on behalf of a local resident. The cheerleaders had been painting ...
In Gun-Loving America, The Soviet-Designed Kalashnikov Rifle Conquers Post Date: 2012-10-19 11:36:17 by Brian S

Kalashnikovs, the Soviet-designed rifles that became the basic killing tool of armies and militants around the globe, are making a new conquest: the United States. At his workshop in Manchester, New Hampshire, Owen Martin expertly dismantles the Kalashnikov brought to him by a friend. Im doing pretty good, the satisfied young gunsmith says. Also in the workshop is Martins friend Mat Devito, a private trainer for would-be marksmen. Devito says the Kalashnikov is all the rage hes just finished introducing the military style weapon to 40 women, aged between 15 and 54, whod never touched a gun before. He says hes seen a huge ...
Virginia GOP Caught Throwing Away Voter Registrations--UPDATED (GOP employee arrested) Post Date: 2012-10-19 10:52:26 by Hondo68

You know how every time they're in control, Republicans grow the government and run into the ground to prove that government is inefficient and bloated? Well, I think it's time to realize that the GOP is now determined to prove that their cries of voter fraud are true...because they're the ones committing it. This is really maddening: On Monday I saw a really interesting story coming out of Harrisonburg on Facebook: "I just saw a guy throw a bag of trash in my cardboard dumpster and speed off. I went to get the bag and throw it in the trash dumpster. In the bag was a folder containing FILLED OUT VIRGINIA VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS!! I called the Harrisonburg Registrars office ...
Flashback: Real-time Romney ad shocks Schieffer Post Date: 2012-10-19 00:12:58 by A K A Stone

CBS News correspondent Bob Schieffer was caught off guard Sunday when he made an instant cameo in a Romney campaign commercial airing during his own program. In the commercial, Schieffer -- who hosts CBS' "Face the Nation" -- was shown questioning Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod over a barrage of negative ads, especially attacks on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Bain Capital. "Whatever happened to hope and change?" the spot showed Schieffer saying in footage from the program. Schieffer opened a later segment saying he was "shocked" by the ad and distancing himself from it. "That was a question that I posed to ...
Bob Beckel: If Gallup numbers are correct, ‘It’s over’ Post Date: 2012-10-18 19:48:08 by calcon

Thursdays Gallup tracking poll giving Republican nominee Mitt Romney a seven-point lead over President Barack Obama sent shockwaves throughout the political world. However, it also seems it might have dampened the outlook of a few Democrats heading toward next months election. On Fox News Channels The Five on Thursday, Bob Beckel, the shows lone liberal, said that if those numbers were true, and he had his doubts, the election is over for Obama. If I were looking at the numbers and managing the campaign, I would be upset, Beckel said. Im not sure panic. But if the numbers are correct, its over. It is over. So, I mean you ...
CNN: Obama got more time at the debate because he spoke slower than Romney Post Date: 2012-10-18 17:47:47 by calcon

An internal memo obtained by NBC ABC CBS New York Times Washington Post LA Times TMZ outlines the spin going on at CNN over Tuesday nights debate: CNNs Managing Editor sent an email around the office today, praising Candy Crowley and trying to blunt criticism that she was unfair to Mitt Romney. The email sent by Mark Whitaker and obtained by TMZ is almost a series of talking points to address Candys critics. After praising a performance that moderator Candy Crowley pulled off masterfully (the importance of booting an ill-advised fact check mid-debate to avoid any appearance of bias is stressed in Debate Moderator 101 and it showed), ...
Boy Scout "Perversion Files" Show Locals Helped Cover Up Post Date: 2012-10-18 16:48:51 by Brian S

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Again and again, decade after decade, an array of authorities - police chiefs, prosecutors, pastors and local Boy Scout leaders among them - quietly shielded scoutmasters and others accused of molesting children, a newly opened trove of confidential papers shows. At the time, those authorities justified their actions as necessary to protect the good name and good works of Scouting, a pillar of 20th century America. But as detailed in 14,500 pages of secret "perversion files" released Thursday by order of the Oregon Supreme Court, their maneuvers allowed sexual predators to go free while victims suffered in silence. The files are a window on a much larger ...

At a campaign event for Barack Obama's reelection campaign, Bill Clinton said that Mitt Romney's argument "is true, we're not fixed": "Governor Romney's argument is, we're not fixed, so fire him and put me in," said Clinton. "It is true we're not fixed. When President Obama looked into the eyes of that man who said in the debate, I had so much hope four years ago and I don't now, I thought he was going to cry. Because he knows that it's not fixed." UPDATE: A Romney spokesman comments: "We agree with former President Bill Clinton. The economy has not been fixed under President Barack Obama. Today, more than 23 million ...

Romney is winning the white vote — by a lot Post Date: 2012-10-18 12:43:01 by calcon

Political analysts (including The Fix) spend a good bit of time these days talking about important voter groups Latino voters and female voters, in particular. But all of the focus on these groups has obfuscated one fact: Mitt Romney is performing very, very well among white voters. And in fact, most recent polls show him winning the white vote by more than any GOP presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan. Some recent national polls have shown Romney losing the Latino vote by upwards of 40 or 50 points a result that, if it came to pass, would significantly hurt the GOPs chances of winning the White House, given the rapid growth in the Latino population. But even if ...

Sidwell Friends, the Washington D.C. private school that both Obama daughters attend, was evacuated Thursday due to a suspicious package, police officials say. Araz Alali, a spokesman for the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, said that the scene is now clear and that there is no evidence that the threat was directed at the First Family. According to the Washingtonian, this message was distributed to the school's emergency alert system: "This is an emergency message from Sidwell Friends School. Due to a suspicious phone call, the buildings on the Wisconsin Avenue campus have been evacuated. We will notify you when further information is available." "We are ...

A couple of weeks ago, Jazz Shaw wrote that conservatives should consider Morning Joe a good forum to have for moderates and independents that tune into MSNBC to get some semblance of the truth. Weve already noted Mark Halperins cutting criticism of Team Obamas Bindergate, and this is another piece of data that these viewers would not have heard had MSNBC scheduled a Hardball/Rachel Maddow clone for this slot. Steve Rattner, the former car czar for Barack Obama, explains why voters may have narrowly given Obama the edge in the debate on Tuesday night, but give Mitt Romney a 31-point advantage on the economy. You have to go all the way back to the ...
Boy Scouts' 'Perversion' Files Set To Be Released Post Date: 2012-10-18 11:39:21 by Brian S

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Confidential files kept by the Boy Scouts of America on men they suspected of child sex abuse are set to be released after a two-year-long court battle. The anticipated release of the files on Thursday by Portland attorney Kelly Clark will reveal 20,000 pages of documents the Scouts kept on men inside - and in some cases outside - the organization believed to have committed acts of abuse. The court-ordered release of the so-called perversion files from 1965 to 1985 has prompted the organization to pledge that they will go back into the files and report any offenders who may have not been reported to the police when alleged abuse took place. That could prompt a new ...

Its funny what happens to a data series when consistency returns to its collection. Last weeks weekly jobless claims numbers dropped dramatically to nearly a four-year low, but later it was discovered that one large state didnt report all of its claims properly. This week, the level returns to the same range weve seen since the spring of 2011: In the week ending October 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000, an increase of 46,000 from the previous weeks revised figure of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was 365,500, an increase of 750 from the previous weeks revised average of 364,750. The advance seasonally ...
