MIDLAND, Texas Four veterans were killed and 16 other people were injured when a train slammed into a parade float carrying the returning heroes to a banquet to honor them in West Texas, officials said Friday. The float carrying wounded veterans and their spouses to a banquet in West Texas took the full force of the train at a railroad crossing Thursday. Some people managed to jump clear as the train, with its horn blasting, bore down on the float decorated with American flags. Horrified spectators at the parade could only watch as the carnage unfolded. The train honked its horn, but the 18-wheeler could not go anywhere because of the other one (truck) being right in front of ...

WASHINGTON, November 15 (By Sasha Horne for RIA Novosti) - The electrical power grid in the United States is vulnerable to terror attacks that could cause more damage to the system than natural disasters, costing hundreds of billions of dollars and blacking out large regions of the country, according to a report made public Wednesday by the National Research Council (NRC), an independent think-tank on public policy. "Power system disruptions experienced to date in the United States, be they from natural disasters or malfunctions, have had immense economic impacts," said M. Granger Morgan, head of the department of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University and ...

Pinellas Park, Florida -- Daniel Jensen wasn't running from the law, he was trying to protect his home from burning up. Yet, Pinellas Park Police tasered him in the process. Jensen and his attorney say it's an excessive use of force. Jensen was still shaken and visibly emotional as he retold what happened last Thursday evening. He said being tasered by police has not only impacted him, but it also impacted his children, who saw it all happen. He described the Pinellas Park Police officers actions as "brutal." He said they showed "no compassion." "All I remember is laying in water, being electrocuted for saving my home," said Jensen. Four days later, ...

WASHINGTON The sex scandal that downed CIA chief David Petraeus has ensnared another top US general and is becoming ever more complex as it reverberates around the corridors of power in Washington. Here is a look at the main characters and the tangled web of intrigue that links them: GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS The reason this scandal is so explosive is that the man at the center of the storm is David Petraeus, the most celebrated US general of his generation. Credited with turning around the war in Iraq in 2007, he became the commander of US forces in Afghanistan in 2010 and there was even talk of a tilt for the presidency before he became CIA chief in September 2011. His stellar ...

Petraeus, a U.S. defense official said. John Allen, who was nominated last month to become NATOs new Supreme Allied Commander, is being investigated by the Pentagons Inspector General after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found e-mails between him and Jill Kelley, according to the official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity. FBI agents last night searched the home of Paula Broadwell, the woman said to have had an extramarital affair with former CIA Director David H. Petraeus that led to his resignation last week. Shelley Lynch, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigations Charlotte, North Carolina, field office, confirmed that agents entered Broadwells home in an upscale neighborhood of the city. The agents brought cardboard boxes used for carrying papers and were on both floors of the home, the Charlotte Observer reported. The search marks the latest turn in a probe that has embroiled three families, cost Petraeus his job and spurred calls from U.S. lawmakers for an ...

(WASHINGTON) -- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor knew of David Petraeus' affair with biographer Paula Broadwell almost two weeks before the former CIA director resigned his post. A senior Cantor aide told ABC News that the Republican congressman from Virginia learned about the FBI investigation that brought the affair to light in a phone conversation with an FBI agent Oct. 27. Cantor then asked his chief-of-staff to pass the information along to the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller. Cantor spoke to no one else about the investigation, the aide said. Hurricane Sandy delayed the message to Mueller until Oct. 31. Petraeus admitted the extramarital relationship and submitted his ...
Americans Favor Regulations More Than Romney Bargained On Post Date: 2012-11-12 10:38:42 by Brian S

Mitt Romney urged voters to reject President Barack Obama and his job-killing regulations. Obamas victory last week shows many Americans arent as reflexively anti- Washington as Romney expected. In fact, presidents through history who aggressively used the tools of government at their disposal have won favor, and re-election. The idea that there simply was a deference to private property and individual rights is one of these American myths, said William Novak, a University of Michigan law professor who has written on regulatory history. From Democrat Franklin Roosevelt to Republican Richard Nixon, leaders who imposed federal limits on monopolists, ...
Drifting Fish Farm Yields First Harvest in US Waters Post Date: 2012-11-11 17:05:41 by A K A Stone

A Hawaii-based company harvested fish for the first time from an unanchored drifter pen, that has been riding eddies in the open ocean 3 to 75 miles offshore of the Big Island of Hawaii.
The harvest from the Velella Research Project completes the grow-out cycle of sashimi-grade fish in a method that Kampachi Farms says is more sustainable than fixed-location farms close to shore.
"This final harvest far surpassed our expectations," said Neil Anthony Sims, Co-CEO of Kampachi Farms. "The fish thrived in the research net pen far from shore, with phenomenal growth rates and superb fish health... and without any negative impact on water quality, the ocean floor, wild fish or marine ...

The 2012 presidential election will be analyzed to death. Then, it will be commented on for years or decades to come. Before the election, we heard various hypotheses about its import: The year 2012 will see the last free election. It will reveal a deeply divided people, divided over the most fundamental issues of right and wrong. It is a Weimar Election. That was the vote of the Germans in the 1930s about who would rule the country. They did not read the party leader carefully or watch what he did. The majority in the country is not white but brown. They dance to a different tune. No real unified Catholic vote ...

Out of 175,554 registered voters, 247,713 vote cards were cast in St. Lucie County, Florida on Tuesday. Barack Obama won the county. When faced with the astronomical figures, Gertrude Walker, Supervisor of Elections for St. Lucie County, said she had no idea why turnout was so incredibly high. She was flabbergasted, saying, "We've never seen that here." Coincidentally (or not), St. Lucie County is also in Allen West's district, where 6,000 votes mysteriously "shifted" from Mr. West to his challenger. Out of the 247,713 cards cast, somehow election machines counted 123,591 total votes. Along with this questionable result, Mr. Obama also received over 99% ...

President Obama must have run the greatest campaign in the history of campaigns (and he's been telling us he did too). First he got over 99% of the vote in places where GOP inspectors were kicked out in Pennsylvania, then he got 100% of the vote in 21 districts in Cleveland. Now he's done it again! Down in Broward County, Florida, Mr. Obama came away with more votes than he garnered in 2008, a particularly staggering accomplishment considering he received fewer state-wide totals in both Florida and across the country. How exactly did he accomplish this? Well, in part thanks to Broward County Precincts L024 to L029 (though I'm sure it's all a coincidence that this happened ...

President Obama must have run a great campaign considering the tremendous numbers he put up in numerous big cities. Over in Philadelphia, he was lucky enough to get 90% percent turnout in some districts with over 99% of the vote. In Cleveland, in some districts he did even better with an astounding 100% of the vote in dozens of locations. For example, in Cleveland's Fifth Ward, Mr. Obama won districts E, F, and G 1,337 to Mitt Romney's... 0. And in case you're wondering, Gary Johnson received more votes than Mr. Romney. Well, maybe that's just a fluke. In the Ninth Ward, Mr. Obama won districts D-G with a paltry total of 1,740 to... 3. Hey, at least Romney got .2% of the ...

Rep. Ron Paul, whose maverick presidential bids shook the GOP, said in the wake of this week's elections that the country has already veered over the fiscal cliff and he sees no chance of righting ship in a country where too many people are dependent on government.
"We're so far gone. We're over the cliff," the Texas Republican told Bloomberg Television's "In the Loop" program. "We cannot get enough people in Congress in the next 5-10 years who will do wise things." Every parent should check what their child is posting online periodically. I don't want to hear that it's an invasion of their privacy. I would want to know if my child was posting this kind of hatred. I would want to know if my child had these kinds of thoughts and why. It's not just about the racist rants but, it's also about the lack of respect for the President of the United States of America. Here is just a sampling of the racist rants tweeted by teens. 1) I really just can't stand that monkey in office any longer. 2) Hope Obama dies. 3) First thing my mom says this morning: did you hear the bad news? The monkey is staying for another 4 years. #WeHateYouObama 4) ...

Republicans Face Murky Political Future In Increasingly Diverse U.S. Post Date: 2012-11-07 18:48:19 by Brian S

Republican leaders awoke Wednesday to witness their grim future. And then promptly began what promises to be an extended period of internal strife over how a party that skews toward older, white men can compete in an increasingly diverse America. President Obamas decisive victory over Mitt Romney served as a clinic in 21st-century politics, reflecting expanded power for black and Hispanic voters, dominance among women, a larger share of young voters and even a rise in support among Asians. Nationally, the steady and inexorable decline of the white share of the electorate continued, dropping to 72 percent, down from 74 percent in 2008 and 77 percent in 2004. The Hispanic share grew ...
