Selfies likely factor in fatal Colorado plane crash, investigators say
Post Date: 2015-02-03 16:13:53 by GeorgiaConservative

A pilot taking selfies may have contributed to the deadly crash of a small plane in Colorado last year, federal investigators said. The pilot, Amritpal Singh, 29, and his passenger, Jatinder Singh, 31, were killed May 31 when the two-seat Cessna crashed in a wheat field shortly after takeoff from Watkins, Colo., about 25 miles east of Denver. It's not clear if the two were related. A recording from a GoPro camera on the plane, recovered from the crash site, showed the pilot taking cellphone selfies with a flash during a nighttime takeoff shortly before the crash, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report released last week. No GoPro footage exists of the pilot's ...

22 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Trust Police

The police aren't making too many friends these days. It seems like there isn't a day that goes by where some tragic and outrageous story doesn't come out involving the cops somehow violating someone's rights, or even killing them. But, no matter how much we see this behavior, no matter how frequent it becomes, there seems to be an army of ignorant, dependent, terrified people who will jump in to defend the police from any criticism, because, you know, they are heroes.... Next time you encounter somebody like that, show them this article, and if they still dismiss it, just move on. There's plenty of people with eyes to see and ears to hear if you aren't wasting your ...

Feds spent $432,OOO studying gay hookup apps

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has spent nearly a half a million dollars studying gay hookup apps such as Grindr. The government awarded $432,000 to Columbia University to interview gay men who use GPS dating apps and determine whether it increases their likelihood of engaging in risky sexual behavior. “Smartphone technologies have provided a new venue for sexual partnering among men who have sex with men (MSM),” the grant for the project states. “Indeed, there are a rapidly growing number of smartphone applications designed to facilitate sexual partnering among MSM.” The project argues that dating apps that use the Global Positioning System, or GPS, has ...

Cost of Colorado theater shooting case exceeds $5 million months before opening arguments

The criminal court case against Colorado theater gunman James Holmes has already absorbed at least $5.5 million in public monies, according to records obtained by Yahoo News. That’s $2 million more than the estimated average cost of a completed Colorado death penalty trial — and the contentious Holmes proceeding is still months away from opening arguments. “Keep adding it up, this isn't ending anytime soon,” said Justin Marceau, a professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law who has studied the costs of capital murder trials. Holmes first appeared in court on July 23, 2012, three days after police say he assailed a packed suburban Denver movie ...

Obama in 2008: "The science right now is inconclusive" that vaccines cause autism

Obama in 2008: Obama drew fire in 2008 for seeming to give credence to the link. At one campaign appearance, Obama noted that “some people are suspicious” that skyrocketing rates of autism might be linked to vaccines. “The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it,” he said. President Barack Obama has quietly handed out an extra 5.46 million work permits for non-immigrant foreigners who arrived as tourists, students, illegal immigrants or other types of migrants since 2009, according to federal documents released by a Freedom of Information Act request. “The executive branch is operating a huge parallel work-authorization system outside the bounds of the [immigration] laws and limits written by Congress [and which] inevitably reduces job opportunities for Americans,” said Jessica Vaughan, the policy director at the Center for Immigration Studies, while filed the FOIA request. “The true magnitude of how often he has evaded the limits set by ...

Former NFL lineman and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was arrested Monday on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute and allegedly assaulting two women, Phoenix police said. Hours later, the NFL Network announced that it had terminated its contract with Sapp, who had been working as a broadcaster and was in Arizona for Sunday's Super Bowl in suburban Glendale. Sapp, 42, was taken into custody at a downtown Phoenix hotel and booked into jail, police said. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney. A tackle and defensive end, Sapp played in the NFL from 1995-2007 for Tampa Bay and Oakland. He was a vital contributor for the Buccaneers as they went from also-ran to Super Bowl ...

Uninsured Balk at Obamacare Bite

When it became obvious a couple of years ago that Obamacare would accelerate health care inflation, the law’s boosters began claiming that cost control was never its primary goal. PPACA’s promoters had previously promised that it would reduce annual health care expenses by $2,500 per family while improving access and quality of care. But the facts forced them to abandon that pledge and adopt a safer party line. As expressed by the New York Times, the new story goes thus: “At its most basic level, the Affordable Care Act was intended to reduce the number of Americans without health insurance.” A new survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation may cause Obamacare partisans to ...

Near the conclusion of Super Bowl XLIX when it was apparent the New England Patriots would be the victor after a late interception thrown by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin instigated a brawl that got him ejected from the game with 0:18 left in the game. Michael Bennett, a defensive end for the Seahawks, also took a shot at Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. "Gronkowski takes a shot from Bennett, who I'm sure is frustrated and Gronkowski throws one back," NBC sports commentator Cris Collinsworth observed. "You know, for Seattle's standpoint, whatever. But from New England's standpoint you are 0:18 away from a Super ...

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The final 125 seconds included a perfect possession by Tom Brady for the go-ahead points, a juggling catch that could have been the play of the year, and a victory-clinching, end-zone interception on a pass - not run - from the 1. A Super Bowl that got off to a slow start wound up with a "Whoa!" finish, a lot like the New England Patriots' entire season. Brady threw two of his four touchdown passes in the final quarter to erase a double-digit deficit, rookie Malcolm Butler picked off Russell Wilson's short throw while Marshawn Lynch watched, and the Patriots ended a decade drought without an NFL title by beating the defending champion Seattle ...

olkien lore led a Texas boy to suspension after he brought his “one ring” to school. Kermit Elementary School officials called it a threat when the 9-year-old boy, Aiden Steward, in a playful act of make-believe, told a classmate he could make him disappear with a ring forged in fictional Middle Earth’s Mount Doom. “It sounded unbelievable,” the boy’s father, Jason Steward, told the Daily News. He insists his son “didn’t mean anything by it.” The Stewards had just watched “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies” days earlier, inspiring Aiden’s imagination and leading him to proclaim that he had in his possession the one ring to ...

Thousands of recently released documents in the shooting death of a suburban Washington, D.C., man nearly two years ago show a police officer mad at a colleague for the shooting. The case garnered a lot of attention, including from an Iowa senator who was following it and pressuring the county for information. John Geer, 46, was fatally shot by police officer in the doorway of his Springfield, Va., home after officers came to investigate a domestic dispute report. According to the newly released documents, Geer’s partner had told police there were weapons in the home, but Geer was unarmed at the time of the shooting and was speaking to police for more than 30 minutes in his doorway. ...

Not this again. Calls to "Audit the Fed" are back. And just as before, they are extraordinarily dangerous to the health of the U.S. economy. First, a little background. Conspiracy theories about the Federal Reserve's wacky technical mumbo-jumbo voodoo have a long populist history. Monetary policy is complicated and abstract; entrusting it to a secretive, propeller- headed cabal naturally arouses suspicion. No surprise, then, that libertarian hero and former Texas congressman Ron Paul for years tried to persuade his colleagues to curb the central bank's power and independence with recurrent calls to "Audit the Fed" (if not kill it entirely). He made Fed audits a ...

A prominent libertarian activist has made controversial comparisons between the late "American Sniper" protagonist Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and mass murderer Adam Lanza, who killed 28 people in a 2012 shooting spree. Lanza isn't much different from Kyle, a Navy SEAL sniper who killed 160 people during multiple combat tours in Iraq, Sheldon Richman, vice president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, said on Wednesday. Two years ago, Lanza shot his mother to death, then proceeded to a nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 20 first-graders and six staffers before committing suicide. "Excuse me, but I have trouble seeing an essential difference between what Kyle did in ...

www.nationalreview.com A Lifestyle So Good, It’s Mandatory California has effectively decriminalized marijuana (possession of less than an ounce is a civil matter roughly equivalent to a speeding ticket — a rarely written speeding ticket), and the state has a medical (ahem) marijuana program that is, for the moment, largely unregulated. At the same time, the state is launching a progressive jihad against “vaping,” the use of so-called e-cigarettes that deliver nicotine in the form of vapor. The state public-health department says that this is justified by the presence of certain carcinogens — benzene, formaldehyde, nickel, and lead—in e-cigarette vapor. But ...

Kansas man gets three years for letting baby die in hot car

Reuters) - A Kansas man was sentenced to nearly three years in prison on Friday for letting his 10- month-old foster daughter die in a hot car while he smoked marijuana and watched television. Seth Jackson, 29, who pled guilty in November to one count of involuntary manslaughter, was sentenced to 32 months in prison, a Sedgwick County District Court official said. He had originally been charged with murder. Police said he left the baby in a vehicle in Wichita, Kansas, for several hours on July 24 as temperatures in the city hovered around 90 degrees. Jackson had picked up marijuana from a dealer and then returned home. He started using the drug without taking the girl out of the car, ...

School district doesn't want pro-'gay' club; ACLU reacts

The ACLU is going after a Mississippi school district that's requiring students to obtain parental permission before joining a club that advocates for homosexual rights. Students in several Mississippi school districts have looked to organize Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs recently. One of the latest is in Brandon, where last week Rankin County Schools superintendent Lynn Weathersby stated the district "does not promote discussion of sexuality" among students at school and that it's "a matter the parents need to discuss with their child or children at home in a private setting." But the ACLU says Rankin County schools would be violating federal civil rights ...

A bill before the Indiana state legislature has revived what is becoming a perennial debate: what information should be provided to pregnant women who receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome? The bill in question proposes to ban abortions due to either the sex of the fetus or a prenatal diagnosis of a genetic difference such as Down syndrome. The law would criminalize the actions of doctors who encourage and perform such abortions, not women who obtain them. As the parent of a child with Down syndrome, I am watching the debate over this bill with fascination. As someone who believes the prenatal medical profession needs a good whack across the nose on this issue, I can see some value ...

Eager To Imprison Medical Marijuana Users, Prosecutors Hide The Truth From Jurors

Imagine you are a juror in the federal trial of five people charged with growing and distributing marijuana in northeastern Washington. The prosecution cannot present any direct evidence that the defendants sold marijuana to anyone, and the defendants say they were growing all 74 plants for their own personal use. A bit of arithmetic reveals that the total number of plants comes to just under 15 per defendant, which happens to be the presumptive limit for patients under Washington’s medical marijuana law. Yet no one says anything about medical marijuana during the trial. What you don’t realize is that the defense attorneys have been forbidden to discuss their clients’ ...
