LOS ANGELES -- A newspaper analysis has found that the most recent estimate of the cost to ride California's bullet train from Los Angeles to San Francisco is a bargain at an average of $86.At roughly 20 cents a mile, it would be one of the world's cheapest high-speed rail trips, the Los Angeles Times reported. The calculation assumes a typical fare between stations along a 438-mile route in the mid-range of what state officials expect the final alignment to measure. The average fare on Italy's 434-mile bullet train from Milan to Salerno was 25 cents a mile. On China's 809-mile line between Beijing and Shanghai, it was 22 cents per mile. China provides little information on ...

A Los Angeles police officer demanded identification from a homeless man named Brandon Glenn Tuesday night, then shot him twice when the man reached into his pocket to provide that identification, according to a witness. The witness was interviewed by Luke Rudkowski of We Are Change in the video below, who did not want his face shown on camera out of fear of police retaliation. But even Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said he was very concerned about the shooting after witnessing footage from a surveillance camera that recorded the incident. Any time an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that, ...

FCC shoots down petitions to delay open internet rules Post Date: 2015-05-10 18:11:06 by buckeroo

Remember when a wolfpack of cable companies and telecoms -- including AT&T, CenturyLink, the American Cable Association, USTelecom and more -- filed motions to delay the FCC from enacting parts of its open internet order? Well, the Commission was having none of that. Late in the day this past Friday, Wireless Competition Bureau chief Julie Veach and Wireless Telecommunications Bureau chief Roger Sherman handed down an order dismissing those petitions, pointing out that additional protection for the internet as we know it is crucial and that the petitioners' cases aren't as strong as they think. Most of those groups had their sights set on one crucial proviso: the FCC's new ...

GREENVILLE, S.C. Republican primary voters face an unusual test in 2016. Multiple choice. The party that usually features well-established favorites in its primary races is now looking at a free-for-all with more than a dozen aspirants, each of whom facing his and her own unique test: standing out in a very crowded field. "It feels like anybody can just jump in!" said Kirstin Griffin, 43, a Greenville preschool teacher's aide who listened to some of the candidates at a weekend forum in upstate South Carolina. "I think it's good," she added. "Everyone has to prove themselves." That's what brought Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Rick ...

RALEIGH, N.C. - The nation's top transportation official says he's more optimistic that high-speed rail will eventually become a reality in the Southeast after Georgia and South Carolina expressed interest in a joint agreement between North Carolina and Virginia to study, coordinate and advocate for the project."You look across the country, the Northeast corridor is more than a constellation of states," U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told The Associated Press this week. "That multi-state coordination just hasn't existed as strongly here in the Southeast. And that would be a really key part of starting something big."North Carolina and Virginia ...

Karl Rove surrenders to ObamaCare Post Date: 2015-05-08 23:09:57 by out damned spot

It is with great pleasure that I rise in praise of Karl Rove, who now largely agrees with me that Republicans should place into the dustbin their bogus proposal to repeal ObamaCare. In my recent column in The Hill, "The 'Clinton Cash' con," I suggested that the new book by Peter Schweizer proves absolutely nothing on the matter of whether Hillary Clinton committed any wrongdoing, and it is a con to suggest or imply otherwise. I add today a discussion of another con game by Republicans, the suggestion that they will repeal ObamaCare, which they know they will not do, but pretend they will to give red meat to the right-wing base; a promise they know they will not keep. And ...

By Amanda Warren A tragic story of police showing up at the wrong house and blasting away another beloved pet was just passed on the Internet - across the world - like a torch. The embers are still glowing hot and are threatening to bring the whole damn thing down. So much so, that the officers involved had to scurry to cover up the action and ensuing lies. Even the Wyckoff, NJ department Facebook page disappeared and they slapped up a new one to escape public ire - but that one soon got over 100 one-star ratings with each reviewer describing what really happened. Will this be the last straw to bring accountability for police indiscriminately killing the canine family members of its ...

In the first video, Travis documents the officer driving nearly 20 mph over the posted speed limit. Travis then continues to follow the officer and documents his speed as they move through different speed zones. At this point, Travis explains, the officers wife gets the car to stop. Across Massachusetts and across America thousands of schoolchildren are given sexually graphic, psychologically intrusive surveys by the public schools without parents knowledge. These surveys also ask youth to reveal their criminal activity, personal family matters, and other intimate issues. This is done in the public middle schools and high schools during school hours. At best, parents are told about the surveys in vague terms, but are rarely allowed read them beforehand. The surveys are officially anonymous and voluntary. But they are administered by the teacher in a classroom and (according to teachers weve talked to) there is often pressure for ...

An Auburn woman calling herself an ambassador for God and his son, Jesus Christ, filed a federal lawsuit Friday against all homosexuals. Sylvia Driskell, 66, said in the suit that she is petitioning the U.S. District Court of Omaha to be heard "in the matter of homosexuality. Is homosexuality a sin, or not a sin?" In a seven-page letter framed as a lawsuit, she cited Bible passages that described homosexuality as an abomination and against nature, and she said never before has the nation or the state been "besiege(d) by sin." "Will all the judges of this nation judge God to be a lier [sic]?" Driskell asked. She said she petitioned the court because she ...
