Real ID Enforcement Has Been Pushed Back. Again.

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005. 17 years later, the law has yet to go into effect. On Monday, government officials announced that enforcement would be delayed another two years. What's taking so long? Rollout of the law, which would require travelers flying domestically in the United States to show a security-enhanced photo ID, has been plagued by confusion and state-level noncompliance. Despite years of warnings that enforcement was coming soon, it seems increasingly clear that Real IDs are far from actually becoming required at U.S. airports and federal buildings. A Law That Facilitates Cannabis Research Exemplifies the Modesty of the Reforms We Can Expect From Congress

President Joe Biden last week signed into law what Marijuana Moment describes as "the first piece of standalone federal cannabis reform legislation" ever enacted in the United States. That is probably the most impressive thing you can say about the new law, which will make it easier for scientists to study a drug that is still prohibited for all other purposes under federal law. The legislation, which received broad bipartisan support in the House and Senate, suggests how far the national conversation about cannabis has progressed since California became the first state to approve its medical use in 1996. At the same time, the bill's modest scope shows how much distance ...

A California task force studying the long-term effects of slavery and systemic racism on black residents in the state has estimated a whopping $569 billion in reparations is owed to the descendants of enslaved people, according to a report. The nine-member panel concluded that black Californians whose ancestors were in the US in the 19th century are due $223,200 each due to housing discrimination practices utilized from 1933 to 1977, the New York Times reported. Danger Zone: On Religion, America Is Becoming More Like China
Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:46:11 by Charles_Byrd

Not too many Americans want to see their land become more like China, but it is doing so in at least one particular way: The United States is secularizing — and rapidly. In fact, more than a third of Americans under 30 and 23 percent of adults overall now claim no religious affiliation. This still pales in comparison to China’s corresponding 91- percent figure, but such people constituted only about seven percent of the U.S. population in the early 1990s. This phenomenon has serious implications. For one thing, church attendance is an excellent predictor of voting patterns, with those attending services regularly breaking Republican (being conservative) and atheists largely ...

New York Forces Websites To Monitor 'Hateful' Speech. A New Lawsuit Says This Violates the First Amendment.

In New York, websites and apps are required to have a plan to address "hateful conduct" on their platforms. A new lawsuit is seeking to change that. On Thursday, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed a lawsuit on behalf of two online platforms, Rumble and Locals, as well as Eugene Volokh, a UCLA law professor who runs the blog The Volokh Conspiracy (which is hosted by Reason.) FIRE claims that a New York law mandating that online platforms provide mechanisms for reporting "hateful" speech violates the First Amendment. Click for Full Text!

Congressional negotiators are making a dash to scrounge together a bipartisan deal on how to fund the federal government for fiscal 2023, with just weeks on the clock until a looming shutdown deadline. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) told The Hill on Wednesday that top negotiators on both sides have begun exchanging top-line figures for a potential omnibus funding package, but he added “it’s still an open question” whether Congress will pass such a bill next month. SCOTUS Appears Favorable to Web Developer in Lawsuit Against Colorado Anti-discrimination Law

Liberal media watching the two-and-a-half-hour oral arguments in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis on Monday concluded that Lorie Smith is likely to prevail in her preemptive lawsuit against Colorado’s anti-discrimination law and the state agency attempting to enforce it. Reuters concluded that the high court “leans toward web designer” while Colorado’s liberal CPR News headlined: “Supreme Court seems poised to side with Colorado web Designer in 303 Creative case.” CPR reluctantly added that the high court is likely to rule “that creative businesses [like Lorie Smith’s] would be protected by the 1st Amendment.” Click for Full Text!

Supreme Court Debates Whether Web Designers Can Be Forced To Make Gay Wedding Pages

Whether designing a webpage for customers counts as speech and therefore whether a designer could be compelled by Colorado law to design wedding pages for same-sex couples took center stage before the Supreme Court this morning. Creative 303 LLC vs. Elenis came before the Court this morning and brought with it a tangled thicket of competing Supreme Court precedents about when the government can compel businesses or institutions to pass along messages or ideas they object to. At the heart of this case, Lorie Smith, owner of Creative 303 LLC, wants to design web pages for weddings. But she has religious objections to same-sex marriage and doesn't want to design pages to celebrate gay ...

Almost No One Noticed the Hate Speech Law That Just Took Effect — or the Lawsuit Against It

It was already the case that certain conservative websites have had to eliminate their comment sections under threat from Big Tech, which has the ability to take those sites offline (as it did with Parler). Now the New York state government has gotten in on the act, instituting a “hate speech” law that compels any site allowing comments to police its users’ speech — or face punishment. As law professor Eugene Volokh puts it, the state wants to “conscript” us to “violate the Constitution.” The law, which took effect Saturday, sparked an 11th-hour lawsuit filed by the nonprofit group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) on behalf of ...

After a Crackdown on a Pain Clinic, a Tragic Double Suicide

"In my mind, what the DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] is essentially doing is telling a diabetic who's been on insulin for 20 years that they no longer need insulin and they should be cured. They just don't understand what chronic pain is." That's what Gretchen Elliott's brother told Vice at his sister's funeral last month. Gretchen and her husband Danny committed suicide because they could no longer endure a pain that doctors were terrified of treating. It was the most recent of the many dreadful outcomes that follow when cops practice medicine. Click for Full Text!

11th Circuit Says a Judge Should Not Have Interfered With the FBI's Review of the Mar-a-Lago Documents

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon never should have interfered with the FBI's investigation of government records that former President Donald Trump retained after leaving office, a federal appeals court ruled last week. The decision, which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit issued late Thursday, allows the Justice Department to resume its examination of some 13,000 documents that the FBI seized from Mar-a-Lago in August. Special Counsel Jack Smith is considering whether Trump or his underlings committed federal crimes by keeping the records at his Palm Beach resort. Cannon threw a wrench into that investigation on September 5, when she agreed with Trump that a special ...

The United States government’s Department of Homeland Security announced Monday it is delaying until May of 2025 requiring people to present REAL ID compliant identification to make it through security checkpoints at American airports. This delay extends a previous delay in implementation of the requirement that was set to expire in May of 2023. In 2005, when the US House of Representatives considered the REAL ID Act, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) presented a brief speech on the House floor in which he layed out a strong pro-liberty case against REAL ID. You can watch Paul’s speech here. Click for Full Text!

A premature baby who was so small at birth that she weighed the same as a loaf of bread has made a remarkable recovery. Now, her family is looking forward to celebrating their first Christmas together. When Sophie James was 25 weeks pregnant, her water broke, and she gave birth to her premature little girl, Marley, who weighed just 750 grams at birth — roughly the same as a loaf of bread. According to The Mirror, she had a number of health issues due to her early arrival, including renal failure and a brain bleed. She also suffered from a condition called hypocalcaemia, which meant that she had too much calcium in her blood. Click for Full Text!

State Figures Provide Important Context for National Abortion Trends

National abortion figures attempt to show the direction of the country as a whole, but state numbers sometimes offer a more complete or at least more nuanced view of the trends and currents. And differences between the states, their laws, and the relative dominance of the abortion industry may affect the direction the abortion numbers go and how well they are counted.
