Proud to be “bucking the trend” of nations loosening their abortion law Post Date: 2022-12-10 06:02:49 by Charles_Byrd

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters that covers the lives of people around the world who struggle to live freely or fairly. Guess what? Those who struggle to live freely or fairly most assuredly do not include unborn babies. Anastasia Moloney is the author of Abortion rights: U.S. restrictions buck the global trend in 2021 As you can tell from the headline, the United States is the outlier, out of step with relaxed abortion laws around the world. Personally, I consider that a badge of honor. Click for Full Text!
6th Circuit hears Sisters of Life challenge to Louisville “buffer zone” Post Date: 2022-12-10 05:59:57 by Charles_Byrd

A skeptical Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals heard the Louisville metro government defend its policy of establishing a 10 foot buffer zone in front of the EMW Womens Surgical Center. The Louisville City Council enacted the buffer zone in May 2021. EMW is the lone abortion provider in Kentucky. Sisters for Life, a Christian anti-abortion nonprofit group also based in Louisville, opposed the city ordinance establishing the buffer zone in a June 2021 federal lawsuit, Dave Byrne reported. It argues that barring ministers from EMWs front entrance violates free speech and religious freedom rights, and endangers what it called a life-saving sidewalk ...

December Is No Time to Ignore Congress Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:09:27 by Charles_Byrd

Congresss lame-duck session is an ideal time for both parties to pass last-minute legislation while voters are busy Christmas shopping and before members who lost their reelection bids surrender their seats in January. Especially this year, real danger lurks in such legislation. Above all, theres the threat that Congress turns the expanded child tax credit into a new and very costly permanent entitlement. But other threats loom. Ill look at a few of them today. A lame-duck session is a great opportunity to push for too much spending on irresponsible pet projects, and more will probably be pushed through this year with little accountability. Thats partly because ...

Defending Farmers Against the Agenda 2030 Land Steal | Beyond the Cover Post Date: 2022-12-08 20:30:07 by Charles_Byrd

In this episode of Beyond the Cover, host Gary Benoit interviews senior editor Rebecca Terrell about how members of The John Birch Society, who are not themselves necessarily farmers, are helping farmers in the Midwest fight the carbon-capture pipeline project that is threatening their livelihoods. Terrell also points out how the JBS is helping to spread the word, to farmers and others, that the war against CO2 is actually just part of a broader globalist/UN-orchestrated power grab now known as Agenda 2030 and formerly known as Agenda 21. If the power grab is completed, the world will be shackled under the guise of saving it. If this sounds unbelievable, it is only because you ...
Brittney Griner Has Finally Been Released Post Date: 2022-12-08 20:08:10 by Charles_Byrd

After nearly nine months in Russian detention, Brittney Griner has been released as part of a prisoner swap, the Biden administration announced Thursday morning. The development comes after months of rumors of an attempted prisoner swap and just weeks after Griner was formally transferred to a Russian penal colony to begin serving a 9-year sentence. While Griner's release is welcome news, it's important to remember that her imprisonment was so outrageous not just because of its obvious political motivation but also because no one should face prison time for nonviolent drug offenses. Colorado's Anti-Discrimination Law Forces Artists To Echo the State's Messag Post Date: 2022-12-07 19:40:15 by Charles_Byrd

Lorie Smith is a conservative Christian and a website designer who thinks she should be able to engage in her chosen occupation without compromising her moral beliefs. But that is illegal in Colorado, where Smith is forbidden to create websites for heterosexual weddings unless she is also willing to create websites for gay weddings. The Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA) simultaneously censors Smith by stopping her from announcing the principles that guide her work and requires her to express a message that contradicts those principles. The question for the Supreme Court, which heard Smith's case on Monday, is whether those commands are consistent with her First Amendment right to ...

Real ID Enforcement Has Been Pushed Back. Again. Post Date: 2022-12-07 19:05:17 by Charles_Byrd

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005. 17 years later, the law has yet to go into effect. On Monday, government officials announced that enforcement would be delayed another two years. What's taking so long? Rollout of the law, which would require travelers flying domestically in the United States to show a security-enhanced photo ID, has been plagued by confusion and state-level noncompliance. Despite years of warnings that enforcement was coming soon, it seems increasingly clear that Real IDs are far from actually becoming required at U.S. airports and federal buildings. A Law That Facilitates Cannabis Research Exemplifies the Modesty of the Reforms We Can Expect From Congress Post Date: 2022-12-07 19:03:21 by Charles_Byrd

President Joe Biden last week signed into law what Marijuana Moment describes as "the first piece of standalone federal cannabis reform legislation" ever enacted in the United States. That is probably the most impressive thing you can say about the new law, which will make it easier for scientists to study a drug that is still prohibited for all other purposes under federal law. The legislation, which received broad bipartisan support in the House and Senate, suggests how far the national conversation about cannabis has progressed since California became the first state to approve its medical use in 1996. At the same time, the bill's modest scope shows how much distance ...

Danger Zone: On Religion, America Is Becoming More Like China Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:46:11 by Charles_Byrd

Not too many Americans want to see their land become more like China, but it is doing so in at least one particular way: The United States is secularizing and rapidly. In fact, more than a third of Americans under 30 and 23 percent of adults overall now claim no religious affiliation. This still pales in comparison to Chinas corresponding 91- percent figure, but such people constituted only about seven percent of the U.S. population in the early 1990s. This phenomenon has serious implications. For one thing, church attendance is an excellent predictor of voting patterns, with those attending services regularly breaking Republican (being conservative) and atheists largely ...

New York Forces Websites To Monitor 'Hateful' Speech. A New Lawsuit Says This Violates the First Amendment. Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:20:54 by Charles_Byrd

In New York, websites and apps are required to have a plan to address "hateful conduct" on their platforms. A new lawsuit is seeking to change that. On Thursday, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed a lawsuit on behalf of two online platforms, Rumble and Locals, as well as Eugene Volokh, a UCLA law professor who runs the blog The Volokh Conspiracy (which is hosted by Reason.) FIRE claims that a New York law mandating that online platforms provide mechanisms for reporting "hateful" speech violates the First Amendment. Click for Full Text!

Congressional negotiators are making a dash to scrounge together a bipartisan deal on how to fund the federal government for fiscal 2023, with just weeks on the clock until a looming shutdown deadline. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) told The Hill on Wednesday that top negotiators on both sides have begun exchanging top-line figures for a potential omnibus funding package, but he added its still an open question whether Congress will pass such a bill next month.
