Just as I predicted back in October, Congress pushed its discretionary spending deadline back by one week, from December 16 to December 23. This comes as no surprise as congressional leadership is once again trying to ram through a massive omnibus bill before the year ends. The Friday deadline gives leadership leverage, as they threaten a partial government shutdown that might keep members of Congress in Washington over Christmas. The California Court of Appeals upheld two injunctions against state-mandated diversity quotas on corporate boards earlier this month, according to court documents. California has passed several laws which require corporations to hire at least one director to fulfill a quota based on categories such as sex, race or sexual orientation. The appellate court rejected the California secretary of State’s emergency request to lift two injunctions issued by trial courts which claimed that the laws are unconstitutional. A once-promising bipartisan bill to erase the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine failed to make it into a year-end omnibus spending bill winding through Congress, likely dooming efforts to pass crack cocaine sentencing reform for yet another legislative session. The Biden administration announced Tuesday it is investigating a Texas school district that removed LGBT-themed books from its library shelves. In January, Granbury ISD removed 130 books from its library shelves, including books with LGBTQ themes including “This Book Is Gay” and “Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen,” according to the Texas Tribune. Republicans are set to approve a massive spending bill which includes billions of dollars in funding for the FBI despite recently leaked information which found the federal agency colluded with Twitter to censor users. The climate police have found another thing to blame on climate change. On Sunday, at least 36 people were injured when a Hawaiian Airlines flight suffered what the pilot referred to as “severe turbulence” during a flight from Phoenix to Honolulu. Early Tuesday morning, the Senate finally released its omnibus spending bill, which would fund the government through September of next year. The deadline to pass the bill actually passed on Friday, requiring a one-week stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown. Part of the delay stemmed from disagreements over where to build a new location for the FBI's headquarters.
